View Full Version : My mom
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 08:32 AM Today I was talking to her about Evanescence and she said I can not go to any of their performances until i'm 18 because she's concerned about the "Weird goth people" who go to them. Plus she's trying to turn me into a prep and she told me if I say the word goth in her presence she'll take away the computer. it's almost if she'd stop loving me if I turned goth.
it really pisses me off how she constantly descriminates against gothic people. not like i am trying to be goth, but i feel like it is extremely mean to descriminate on goths just because of how they dress:mad: she also says that all people with depression are low-life people who need to get more social:o
Superstar 07-29-2004, 08:38 AM Thats pretty harsh. The thing about saying goth in front of her seems a little extreme
Alot of people discriminate against goths etc., most people are scared of them! That thing about people who are depressed are low life people, seems pretty unfair, alot of people can just become depressed.:(
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 08:41 AM I also hate when people think depression isn't a serious problem. The only people who understand depression are those with it. I had a friend who seemed to have depression and I was the only one who understood him.
Superstar 07-29-2004, 08:44 AM I've never known anyone with depression but likes most people I'm down sometimes.
I re-read your first post about your mom not loving you if you turned goth, well maybe she just thinks goths are people who are depressed and cause trouble
I am Him 07-29-2004, 09:39 AM Whats so great about that "Goth" think anyway?
webuster 07-29-2004, 10:43 AM she also says that all people with depression are low-life people who need to get more social
Some people are depressed because they have difficulty socialising.
Over here, discrimination against goths is very bad. In the US, you probably have to go all out to be a goth- makeup and stuff, but here, wearing all black has you labelled a goth. I know some 'goths' and a few times people just shout 'goths' or tease them.
It's just a different lifestyle- everyone's minds work different- some people are happy as preps, some aren't. In fact- what you should do to piss of your mom is, if you have a rocky horror cast near you- start going to rocky horror in fishnets instead!
Georgia's on my Mind 07-29-2004, 10:54 AM goths scare me. i walked in hot topic a few weeks ago and just got stared at...screw them, just because i dont look like a freak i cant go into their store? im better than that.. and wtf with all these parents being so neorotic....but i guess its better than having those bratty kids you see running around
EmoJoe 07-29-2004, 11:13 AM Well, personally, I dont like the goths, and I wound never be goth, but saying the word "goth" around her and getting the comp. taking away is kind of ridicoulus

I don't know. I have a red and black Evanescence picture on my desktop (it will be my next avatar) and I am into goth music. My mom is afraid I'll become goth and she is against them.

Well maybe you should dress up as a goth to scare her
Kay Scarpetta 07-29-2004, 12:26 PM Sorry, but that's really stupid. Really.. really stupid.
Evanescence isn't even 'goth' music.

Sometimes I just want to tell her that but she would punish me in some way and I'd get in more trouble than I should  anyway i tell her she doesn't have to like them but she doesn't have to discriminate against them
I've tried telling her Evanescence wasn't bad but she thinks that the people who go to their concerts are "low life weird goths", the kind of people she doesn't want me around.

Yes they do, just like everybody else.
Superstar 07-29-2004, 01:02 PM You should prove to her some way that goths are nice people too (I don't know any but I'm sure they are nice):)
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 01:04 PM I've told her that different people have different taste and some like goth and some don't. I told her that if she was goth she wouldn't like being discriminated against but she doesn't listen.
Superstar 07-29-2004, 01:05 PM But I guess thats the way some people think, and we can't do anything to change it
vienna waits 07-29-2004, 01:06 PM WHY are Evanescence GOTH? Better yet, what IS goth? Wearing weird make-up and being sad?
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 01:10 PM My mom says Evanescence is goth because of the way the band dresses and how their songs are dark and sad sounding. I'm just referring to them as goth because that's my mom's reason for not letting me go to their concerts. What's so wrong with goths?:o
Chelsea 07-29-2004, 01:21 PM Your mom sounds like one of those people that I'd be yelling obscenities at and telling them just how idiotic they REALLY are within 5 minutes of meeting her. Heck, I've already made a career out of criticising her, and I've never met the woman.
Let's just start from the top:
Today I was talking to her about Evanescence and she said I can not go to any of their performances until i'm 18 because she's concerned about the "Weird goth people" who go to them.
There are weird people at EVERY concert. It's a fact of life. I've yet to ever see a concert where there was absolutely NO weirdos.
Goths aren't weird, they just don't look at everything the same way as the average Joe and Jane, and that's what freaks the sh..er..crap out of people. So they're a little different, big da..ng deal. Everyone's got their own skew So what?
Plus she's trying to turn me into a prep
*shudders*
and she told me if I say the word goth in her presence she'll take away the computer.
Hilarious. I know you're serious, but that's the funniest thing I've read all day. I mean, good lord, punishing someone for saying a word that describes a subset of people? Is your mother THAT freakin...heck, I don't know WHAT the word is for THAT. Prudish, uptight, snobbish...I'm at a loss here. Thesaurus, anyone? That's just asinine.
it's almost if she'd stop loving me if I turned goth.
OK, as much as I've lambasted your mother, I'm going to defend her, in a way, for once. She's your MOTHER for crying out loud. As uptight and snobbish as she seems to be, she would NEVER stop loving you. She might do some freaky things to "try to turn you around" (shudders), but, deep down, she'd still love you. Besides, somehow I have trouble picturing you as a goth...
it really pisses me off how she constantly descriminates against gothic people.
It pisses me off, and I don't even know the woman. Your right, she SHOULDN'T discriminate against people just because of how they are. It's one of the most f'ing stupid things any human being can do, and people who practice such discrimination against people should be ashamed.
not like i am trying to be goth, but i feel like it is extremely mean to descriminate on goths just because of how they dress
Glad to see the apple fell far from the tree, and you appear to be FAR more tolerant. As I said, it's NOT right, but some people are snobby little asshols that can't tolerate anything that's even slightly different than themselves.
she also says that all people with depression are low-life people who need to get more social
Speaking from quite a bit of experience, that's just plain ignorant. That...(breathes). Obviously, that woman has never suffered from it, or she WOULD know better. Dammit, don't you think I tried to be social. That I TRIED to be friendly? Hell yeah, but, even the slightest little thing would get me down into a funk I'd take a couple days to recover from. Still do occasionally. Depression can do that to ya. And low-life? That's the biggest steaming pile of horse-fed steaming bullshi I've ever read in my LIFE. Depression can strike ANYONE down. People have gone from perfectly happy and contented to suicidal in a matter of weeks and moths due to it. Life'll do that. I'd try to make a valid point, but that's just kinda hard at this point. I'm THAT mad.
EDIT: Of course, since no one reads my posts, what would it matter if I made a valid point or not...
vienna waits 07-29-2004, 01:26 PM None of this would have happened if you were still watching Leave it to Beaver.

I've gotten into fights with friends over the whole goth thing. My friend Leah wants to be a goth and I invited her to this church thing and she told me that she couldn't go because she's goth and goths don't beleive in God. I told her that she was an idiot and she told me I was everything a prep stood for and I told her that I don't give **** if I am a prep.
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 01:41 PM I don't think there is anything wrong with being a prep either. One of my friends discriminates against preps and I told him that it is a way people choose to be. I am not a goth but I don't like discrimination. But I agree with my mom on the account that preps are people with a lot of class and it's good. But I tell her that isn't an excuse to discriminate against goths

And you mother has never been to an Evanescence concert. There are no "goths" there. At least not in my experience. There's just normal people. Real "goths" generally hate Evanescence anyway.
And you're probably too young to go to an Evanescence concert, considering that you'd probably get trampled.
And jesus christ...you don't just all of a sudden turn into a prep or a goth. You don't wake up and say "Gee. I feel like being a goth today. Let me adorn myself in black makeup and worship satan." I dont get how people think they can choose what they want to be.
Honestly, don't people have better things to do with their time than figuring out what they "are??"

There's a decent number of people who'd disagree with that. Of course, I personally don't care one way or the other, as both types have their drawbacks and superiorities...
...and I invited her to this church thing
Mistake 1. Trying to force religion upon someone looking into the Gothic is DEFINITELY not a smart thing to do.
and she told me that she couldn't go because she's goth and goths don't beleive in God.
Not quite. There's more than 1 flavor of Gothicism. A decent number satanic fringes, well..., but, there are other flavors of Goth that aren't nearly as Satanic, and actually still do follow God...they just prefer some to most of the elements of the Goth lifestyle.
I told her that she was an idiot
Mistake two. If you're trying to get someone to see your point of view, don't call 'em an idiot.
and she told me I was everything a prep stood for and I told her that I don't give **** if I am a prep.
Well, good for you for standing for what you believe. Granted, you've not only alienated your friend, but have probably increased the probability of them doing exactly what you didn't want, but...

My friend turned goth because that's what his girlfriend was and she might not have accepted him if he wasn't. She should have appreciated him for who he was, not how he dressed.

webuster 07-29-2004, 03:03 PM that is my problem with goths too however (and most discriminated minorities)- they're so pissed about being discriminated they too discriminate people. I mean, i'm not a prep, not a goth either (sort of a hybrid! I wear the brand name 'prep' clothes, yet I'm as depressing sometimes as a goth- well, that's how it works in the UK!)- but still, if you go to a club with goths you've to be 'all out goth' or they'll all discriminate. Same with other minorities
A month ago I read in the paper that the British government have been studying teenage behaviour and have come up with 9 groups of teenager. I read the basic summary of each group (cant remember what the names of each where) and laughed a lot at how off target they were!

1) a person who likes to dress and act differently to the other people in society, normally in black but some like much brighter colours. They tend to be thinkers and more often than not quite creative. They have a satyrical sense of humour, and are able to laugh at both themselves and other people. This type of goth originated in the late 80's with the "death" of punk; goths back then liked the style and the "protection" it offered and so emulated it in their own style. They listen to and appreciate all sorts of good music. They can be gay/depressed/weird/mentally disturbed, but more often than not they are just normal people.
2) an offshoot of the nu-metal clique who think that to *really* piss off their parents they'll dress all in black and talk about death and suicide whilst listening to Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Slipknot because it's "cool". They tend to have very little idea of the other type of goths (or anything else other than themselves for that matter) and will probably change their fashion once it becomes "uncool" again. Thank god.

CliffClavin 07-29-2004, 03:41 PM goth/noun
A style of rock music characterized by an intense or droning blend of guitar, bass, and drums, often with mystical or apocalyptic lyrics. Also, a performer or follower of this music or the youth subculture which surrounds it, favouring a white-faced appearance with heavy black make-up and predominantly black clothing.A back-formation of Gothic; the style of dress and some elements of the lyrics evoke the style of gothic fantasy.GOTH grew out of the punk movement in the late seventies, with bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees making the transition from punk; by the mid-eighties it had attracted large numbers of British youngsters to its subculture. One of the most noticeable things about the GOTH look is its elaborate dress code, including black leather, crushed velvet, heavy silver jewellery, and pointed boots, combined with long hair, white-painted faces, and heavy black eyeliner. Although this gives a rather gloomy appearance, most GOTHS are actually peace-loving vegetarians who see themselves as the heirs to the hippie movement of the sixties. The leading performers of the music(also called GOTH ROCK OR GOTH PUNK) include SISTERS OF MERCY,whose leader Andrew Eldritch reportedly chose his pseudonym from the OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY, where the adjective eldritch is defined as 'weird, ghostly, unnatural frightful, hideous'.A more middle class and tame version of the GOTH subculture, based on INDIE music and ethnic clothes, is dismissively known as DIDDY GOTH among young goths.
Gothic (from yahoo dictionary)
SYLLABICATION: Goth·ic
ADJECTIVE:1a. Of or relating to the Goths or their language. b. Germanic; Teutonic. 2. Of or relating to the Middle Ages; medieval. 3a. Of or relating to an architectural style prevalent in western Europe from the 12th through the 15th century and characterized by pointed arches, rib vaulting, and a developing emphasis on verticality and the impression of height. b. Of or relating to an architectural style derived from medieval Gothic. 4. Of or relating to painting, sculpture, or other art forms prevalent in northern Europe from the 12th through the 15th century. 5. often gothic Of or relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate. 6. gothic Barbarous; crude.
NOUN: 1. The extinct East Germanic language of the Goths. 2. Gothic art or architecture. b. 4. A novel in a style emphasizing the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.
WORD HISTORY: The combination Gothic romance represents a union of two of the major influences in the development of European culture, the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribes that invaded it. The Roman origins of romance must be sought in the etymology of that word, but we can see clearly that Gothic is related to the name Goth used for one of those invading Germanic tribes. The word Gothic, first recorded in 1611 in a reference to the language of the Goths, was extended in sense in several ways, meaning “Germanic,” “medieval, not classical,” “barbarous,” and also an architectural style that was not Greek or Roman. Horace Walpole applied the word Gothic to his novel The Castle of Otranto, a Gothic Story (1765) in the sense “medieval, not classical.” From this novel filled with scenes of terror and gloom in a medieval setting descended a literary genre still popular today; from its subtitle descended the name for it.

Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 05:13 PM That's the thing. My mom said when people dress goth they are ignored, unsocial people looking to stand out by looking weird.

No no no, she's wrong about that. Being more social does not bring long-term happiness. That being said, I disagree with her on that, and I agree with her on one thing; I don't like goths' attitude either. But not because of the way they dress or act. It's that, they are selfish people. I mean look, what's the whole reason they all admit they're goth? "I don't fit in with any groups, and people think I'm weird and hate me." "I, I'm, me". They are only thinking about themselves and how pathetic (they think) their lives are. If they were just more (not necessarily out-going) positive and have an attitude of a servant, I doubt they'd feel so insecure. Why should anyone have the attitude of a servant even to people who are rude to them or snub them? Responding to ill-doings against you with kindness is a sign of character. In my case, sometimes I am able to do it, sometimes I fail. No one can become perfect, but we should not allow that to discourage us; we should still try to serve other people.

*gets flamed*
I agree with some parts of what you said (not the goths being selfish though), but still, they shouldn't be discriminated against.
Hollow 07-29-2004, 05:36 PM That is such bull ****. Evanescence isn't even goth in the first place. Although they have depressing songs it doesn't make it all gothic and evil. Let alone she won't even allow you to say the word 'goth'? Good god.
I love Evanescence, as well as the Gothic lifestyle. I wouldn't necessarily call myself "a goth" even though everyone i know thinks i am. I hate it when people judge others who dress like that and think they're evil satan worshippers. They're normal people who have a different style and beliefs. My depression is severe, and it's what brought on me to be dressing and acting like this. I only wear black clothes, partly so i can just fade away and go unnoticed. I have Evanescence and Bauhaus lyrics on my wall to express how i feel, and although my dad hates what kind of styles and beliefs i'm into and he wishes i can be bright and cheery again, even an ******* like him can accept that this is the way i am.

that is so dumb. first of all very few people drink blood. and they don't "go against everything righteous and pure." some might, but it doesn't define "goth" or "depression."
Michael [hXc] 07-29-2004, 05:57 PM That pisses me off too. People can't control whether they have depression or not. Just because someone is pushed to the limit and can't stand it anymore doesn't make them low-life and antisocial.
One of my friends tried to make friends, got teased, and was miserable. He cried everyday, thought he had no friends, and had a miserable life. Nobody understood him but me and our other friend. I don't know what it's like having depression but it pisses me off when people condemn them when they don't know what it's like.

Yeah, the only problem i have with labels is the way everyone abuses them. "Hey, you're not a punk, you can't wear that!" for crying out loud i wish people would just grow up. it almost intimidates me to become a music artist because of all the criticism i'd get "omg! she can't like metallica if she likes christina aguilera! Good for you. Risking your life to be cool is nuts. i can't even believe that. i will admit that i cut myself when i'm really hurt because it always seems to make the pain go away, which makes it addicting. i'm not saying it's ok, i wish i had a better way to deal with depression but i don't. but doing it by absolute choice just to be a goth is going too far, and she needs help if she chooses to be that way.

O.T.: I have a question for you. I know somebody who deals with pain the same way you do - except her case doesn't seem to have anything to do with depression. Being an overly sensitive person, she's developed a habit of getting rid of pain before contemplating what the pain is all about. I was wondering whether cutting is predominantly linked to depression. I'm asking this out of curiousity - this person has already started to get help. Do you have any insights?

I think most people who cut themselves have depression, but i suppose some people who do it don't have the illness.

I disagree :)
See, the kid was just getting his opinion out. I doubt he was exaggerating anything, and if so...he probably doesn't realize it, it's just how he sees the way his parents are acting. I don't think he'd directly lie about their words, which were pretty harsh, and being it's a message board he has every right to bring up that topic.
Everyone should be allowed to vent despite if they're "knocking" or "disrespecting" someone.

barwars 07-30-2004, 10:13 PM I hate labels.
And I hate people who always try to be "different" by dressing "different". But then they have a bunch of friends that dress exactly the same way!!
Anways, you're only what -- 12, right??
I was never allowed to go to a concert at 12, hell -- Im not even sure if I can go to a concert now (no interest, at the moment).
And about the Catholic/"bible thumping" Protestants (a term I LOVE by the way)
Once again, adding my own generalization, but only based on my own life events -- "Bible Thumping" Protestants have been (in my life experiences anyway) much more judgemental than Catholics.
I myself am Catholic, although certainly not devout.
But what very few people know is that the Nazi's hated Catholics as well as Jews.
(which doesnt make any sense, because Christianity came from Catholicism, which came from Judaism)
That's like killing your Grandpa.... in a sense.
Sorry, OT.

Usually people who dress "different" are just staying away from styles that are mainstream or what most of their peers wear, knowing that there are other people in the world that look like them.

But its stupid if you ask me. Because then -- they dress exactly like their friends. So their not different than anybody! They just get cast aside into a clique.
You can call me whatever you want. Although Goth would be kind of dumb.... because nothing about me fits the stereotype of being Goth. Preppy -- I dont care, because I KNOW Im better.

No. She is what you call, "Skater punk".
folfreak25 09-16-2004, 10:44 AM And just because people wear really dark eye makeup, doesn't make them "goth" or "punk". Some of the prepiest girls I know are going really heavy on the eye makeup and trying to be all "goth". But they should really stop, cause they look like idiots.

It really is hard to explain, but usually goth is basically free thinking and not listening to morals and rules of society just because that's "just how it is". A goth is just someone into the goth scene. the lifestyle, clothes, music, etc. Annoying label elitists who have their panties in a bunch and sarcastically say "omgomgomg look, i'm wearin goth stuff, m i a goth now?!?!1/1" are just making it more difficult to explain and further making these labels that they "hate" into a bigger deal.
i should just write an essay about how there's nothing wrong with labels and label elitists are the most annoying and stupid people ever. i'm being literal and honest when i say they're my absolute biggest pet peeve of society and they annoy me more than any other kind of person. i <3 labels. up yours man.

Everyone I know who hates labels hates it because they aren't labeled as what they want to be. Like I have a friend trying to be goth. And he's a prep so he hates labels because of it.
ThirteenInchEscape 09-16-2004, 07:13 PM The sad truth is that Goths are normally far more trendy than preps, in the sense that it seems preps generally give little thought to fashion they just happen to shop in the same places, where as goths all do the same things as eachother in order to be nonconformists

You can't base all goths on that episode, let alone on an unrealistic show like south park. saying "goths all do the same things as eachother in order to be nonconformists" is ENTIRELY an overgeneralization.
