Mary Tyler Moore was Mary Richards on the MTM show.

Others?

Im sure the others were just easy to use because of real names.... but I've read that the name Woody was chosen before Woody Harrelson was cast.

I think Drew Carey is one of the only examples where the character kept the full name of the actor.

Roseanne could have done this, of course, the Conner name would have changed every two seasons!

Funny thing about Will Smith...on Fresh Prince, he was WILLIAM Smith, but in real life, Will's short for WILLARD.

Keeping on topic...Bernie Mac as Bernie Mac on the self-titled Fox sitcom. Mac (in real life and on the show) is short for MacCullough.

Also, Martin Lawrence as Martin Payne and Tommy Ford as Tommy Strong (or Strawn, according to some) on Martin.

Jennifer Grey was playing herself in "It's Like... you know," the unfortunate titled sitcom which premiered in March 1999 after Dharma & Greg on ABC. It got renewed for the fall, but only lasted an additional 13 episodes or so, on Tuesday night, I believe.

Kate Mulgrew did it twice-once on a short-lived show on NBC in the 70s called "Mrs. Columbo" where she played Kate Columbo, the often mentioned but never seen wife of Peter Falks Lt. Columbo on the show "Columbo".
And again when she played Capt. Katherine Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager"-and had a cameo in the last Star Trek movie as Adm. Janeway.

Tony was also a "Tony" on The Tony Danza Show (not the talk show, but a flop NBC sitcom in the late 90's) and also that other flop sitcom he did with Lori Loughlin.

There was some joke that said he only plays Tony's because he doesn't know how to answer to another name, lol

I agree, but I know that Jerry Seinfeld kept his name the same as his alter ego because he said that the only way he would do the show is if he could play himself, since he's a comedian and not an actor. I seriously hope he didn't really treat women the way his alter-ego did! If he did, then his wife Jessica must REALLY love him to put up with that!

John Larroquette -John Hemingway (The John Larroquette Show)

I want this show on DVD SO BADLY and The Storm is taking so long to premiere that I've sort of lost interest and given up on him. The guy isn't producing anything worth watching anymore, just joining in on crap shows/TV movies. I'm jonesing for some old school Larroquette in the worst way and I've watched Night Court to death. :(

That was a good show. I can't recall very many particular episodes, but I enjoyed it. John is (or was) a collector of first edition novels in real life. Hemingway anyone?

How many people can you recall who pulled "The Danza," by which I mean that the names of the characters they played were the same as their real names (or similar)? It's known as "The Danza" in honor of Tony Danza, who played a "Tony" in several shows in his career, as in "Taxi" (Tony Banta), "Who's The Boss?" (Tony Micelli), et al.

Here are some of the ones I've heard of:

Mary Tyler Moore (Mary Richards, in "MTM")

Kate Mulgrew (Kate Columbo/Callahan, in NBC's ill-fated "Columbo" spinoff "Mrs. Columbo" [later renamed "Kate the Detective" and "Kate Loves A
Mystery"]); she almost did it with "Voyager" as well, but the character there was Kathryn Janeway

Lucille Ball (who played several well-known characters named Lucy in her long career, the foremost of course being Lucy Ricardo in CBS' classic comedy "I Love Lucy")

At least once, some last names were "Danzified"; this occurred w/"What's Happening!!" in the '70's, where Ernest Thomas played Roger "Raj" Thomas, and Haywood Nelson played Dwayne Nelson. Fred Berry got the first-name "Danza" treatment, however, being known as Freddy "Rerun" Stubbs, and so did Mabel King and Shirley Hemphill, as Mabel Thomas and Shirley Wilson respectively.

So did Tim Allen, who played Tim Taylor in "Home Improvement," and Andy Griffith, who played Sheriff Andy Taylor in "The Andy Griffith Show."

What I'd like to know is, do you happen to know of any others?

Jeffrey told Bill Kennedy that the character was named Jeffrey when he went in to read for it, so that was (according to him) really mere coincidence.
