I keep getting this while surfing SO. I know the procedure -- just cancel it whenever I see it.

However, now I'm getting them a lot more often and it's getting to be really annoying. :o

It hasn't shown up here on the main boards in a while, but I did see it when I stopped by the galleries yesterday and then again on another site. Irritating crap.

Slightly more malicious javascript Adcode by the Advertising provider.

Cancel. Cancel. Cancel.

Oh, and switch, FULL-TIME, to Firefox for all Non-Windows Update matters. (I thought you had already installed it...). The few problematical websites are far outweighed by the decreased computer problems you'll receive afterwards (I've YET to have ONE single piece of spyware since transitioning to Firefox a month ago)

Oh yeah...Yeah, I have Firefox. Bad me, I haven't been using it lately. :o *switches*

I replaced every instance of an IE shortcut with an instance of a Firefox shortcut. (Get rid of the more annoying Desktop one by a quick drag-and-drop to the recycle bin then approving the delete dialog box)

I left one link to IE in my Programs menu for Windows Update, but aside from it and the HD space consumed, there's virtually no trace of the program on my computer, and I've never had a better browsing experience

Firefox just doesn't have the same feeling IE does...no smooth scrolling, etc...:(

Although I must admit I like how when you click on something and it opens a new window, it makes the window full-sized. :D

Would you believe I never noticed the smooth scrolling thing until just a second ago (I decided to open up a copy of this thread in IE and see if I noticed...I did)

Still, on the whole, I've gotta say I think Firefox IS the better browser. And remember, it's in version 0.9.2. It's not even to version 1 yet, folks, and it's beginning to clip into IE 6's share a little. Features will come in time, right now, it's more about browser security and stability, with some effort on the look and feel in the browser beginning to appear.

Tools -> Options -> General - > Browsing , just check "use smooth scrolling"

Found it and checked the box. It's still not as smooth as IE's scrolling, tho :(

By the way, it was:

Tools > Options > Advanced > Browsing, not General. :D

Okay, it's been a couple of days now, and I've been using Firefox full-time while surfing on here.

I love it a lot so far -- but I have a problem with Firefox while on here.

I use the search function a lot, and whenever I want to search for something here in Firefox, I go to the search page and then Firefox freezes up on me and I have to Ctrl + Alt + Delete it to get out of the window.

Is there a way I can correct Firefox from freezing up on me every time I use the search function?

Update.

Uninstall 0.9, go back to the Mozilla site, d/l 0.9.2.

Enough SEcurity and Bugfixes to DEFINITELY warrant it.

(They're having a few bugs when people install one version over another without uninstalling, that's why you need to remove the old one first).

Try that first, and if it doesn't work, lemme know. Regardless, the update's probably a good idea (Firefox is a browser that you gotta update more often than once every..what is it now, three years since the last major IE update?)

Well I've got two problems maybe someone knows how to help me.

First after I turn on my computer and get to my desktop, before I even log onto the internet I keep getting this pop up box:

No Internet connection is currently available. To view internet content that has been saved to your computer click work offline then right below all that I get

work offline try again

I am thinking some program is running and wants me to be logged on. So this leads me to my second problem, I've got something that keeps running, even when I don't have my browser or anything open at all.

I am thinking it might be my task scheduler, I opened it, didn't find anything, and closed it, and now it's disappeared from my taskbar.

The thing is this comes and goes, it stops eventually but it's the worst when I first turn on my computer after the desktop and stuff load.

If it's not that, how can I find out what program wants to run?

thanks :)

assuming you are familiar with HijackThis! - what does it list as your search pages, and have you tried to reset them?

does it do this when you have only the search page open?

have you tried to install the Google Toolbar extension?

Nonono...The search page here on SO. You know, the one you can access by clicking on http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/top_search.gif? That's the one. Every time I click on http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/images/top_search.gif and the new page loads, it freezes up my Firefox browser. :( Then I have to open up IE so I can use the search page there.

if you do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete the Task Manager should list all the running processes, if you go through them, you should be able to find the culprit - post or PM the list if you need help

it could be Spyware, or a program with an automatic updating feature, or even a download manager

if you right-click the search button, try "open link in new Tab" or "open link in New Window"

Ooo! I have another question while you're here, Rob.

I want to block a specific picture -- ONLY that picture, understand. I've been using the "Block images from <server>" feature, but if I use it on that picture, it'll also block all the images on that server. How can I block only that image? Thanks :D

(I tried opening a new tab and a new window to use the search page....still froze up on me :()

Thanks :D if you have the Adblock extension installed, just right-click on the image, and click on "Adblock image" at the very bottom of the context menu

one tip concerning that: when Sarah had that on seizure-inducing avatar for awhile i had adblocked it, but every day it would show up again, because the user avatars here use a date-code,

the way around that is to use the asterisk "*" as a wild card to block more than one image with similar addresses

try temporarily disabling Adblock (Ctrl+Shift+P)

do you have a Firewall or other Adblocking software running? try temporarily disabling those

do you have the Tabbrowser Extension installed and referrer links blocked, or referrer cookies blocked?

running out of suggestions, but i assume you've also cleaned out your cache and temp files

I'm pretty sure I've figured out what's doing it. Something called TUNE UP APPLICATION START whenever I pause my task scheduler, that pauses too, and it quits running.

So if I delete this tune up application start would it harm any files? What should I do?

thanks :)

Okay, let's see. Do you put the * at the end of the URL, or at the beginning, or just take out the URL and put in *? :D the * replaces the individual characters in the url, so for example if you wanted to block a pic and the address came up as:

www. somesite.com/images/adpic01.jpg

you could replace the "01" with the wildcard * so it would block ALL .jpg pics from that site atarting with "adpic":

www. somesite.com/images/adpic*.jpg

or just replace everything after the "ad" to block all files starting with those characters:

www. somesite.com/images/adpic*

use the System Configuration Utility (type msconfig into the Run command on the Start Menu) click on the "Startup" Tab and uncheck the box in front of SchedulingAgent - mstask.exe

*one downside of doing this is that it WILL disable your critical update notifications - so you will NEED to go check Windows Update regularily*

for an excellent guide to what all of those items are go to :

Windows 98, and I use dialup. I think my internet connection got messed up, so I'm going to have to reinstall that too.

Thanks, I'll keep it updated, I just want to make it stop running. I think that's why I get that workoffline box, cause it wants me to constantly be online.
