Carrie 07-14-2004, 09:12 AM I'm not sure if this has been done before, but I thought it might be fun to ask questions about the show to see how much we know about TDVDS. Whoever gets the question right gets to post the next one.
In what episode did Alan Brady visit the writer's office for the first time?
Dorothys BestPal 07-14-2004, 09:29 AM Was it "Talk to the Snail". If I am right, I have a question ready
Carrie 07-14-2004, 11:54 AM Yes, your turn. :)

What was Mary Tyler Moore's first husband's name?

Jellybean. What was the name of the song that Laura danced to in the living room in "To Tell or Not to Tell" and that Rob and Graciella danced to in "Who and Where was Antonio Stradavarius?" It is played on another episode as the music on a TV show that Rob and Laura are watching but the name of the episode escapes me right now. You should be able to get it from the other clues.

It's Robbie Bobby Boo. Who was "The Hustler?"
Lolac
David VP 07-18-2004, 06:12 PM "The Hustler" = Blackie Sorrell (or, if you prefer: "Fast Eddie Felson" in 1961's major motion picture of the same name). :)
Blackie & Rob play billiards on a pool table that cannot possibly even BE THERE, because there's a huge rock down there prohibiting such an item from fitting properly into the basement area. (NitPick #109.) :)
NitPick #110 (same episode): Rob tells Blackie that it was Laura who purchased this pool table for Rob ("To keep me off the streets").
OK, kids, I ask you (logically) -- Could Laura (who has no job and gets just a small allowance from Robert each week it would seem via the episode "Bank Book 6565696", in which it's revealed it has taken her quite some time to accumulate the robust sum of just $378.16 to buy Rob the "JFK400 Roadster" automobile that Rob has been "drooling over") POSSIBLY have afforded, on her own, the purchase of a pool table for her hubby? A table that, even circa 1962-1963, would have cost approximately $750-$800 (at least).
Perry, next witness. :)
Next Brain-Buster Question --- Exactly how many hairs did Rob find in the bathroom sink in "I'd Rather Be Bald Than Have No Head At All"??
Good Luck.

Lolac
PS, David, you crack me up with that Perry Mason stuff!
David VP 07-18-2004, 06:42 PM I try, Lolac, I try. :)
Laura must have been walking the streets at night in high heels attracting "clients" if she could afford the billiard table AND $378 in savings for the Roadster car.
Lolac is correct (above): By saying either 27 or 28 hairs. But "28" is said multiple times in the show.
Sally -- "Ah, 28 is nothing."
Maurice -- "What do mean nothing -- on HIM (Mel), it'd be a forest!" :)
Next Up --------- In the episodic adventure called "Very Old Shoes, Very Old Rice", Rob & Laura's wedding "witnesses" are played very nicely by Burt Mustin & Madge Blake (aka: "Mrs. Mondello" of "Leave It To Beaver"; Mustin, too, was a LITB alumni). These two old folks had witnessed many a wedding -- What number "witnessing" was Rob & Laura's ceremony for this old couple?
SawgrassSteve 07-18-2004, 10:58 PM Now that's deep, David. I had to look it up, but it's #815. Incidentally, I first remember Madge Blake form Batman. She was Bruce Wayne's Aunt Harriet.
What 4 of Laura's suitors do we know about from the series? Rob is not included.
Steve
David VP 07-19-2004, 12:22 AM Good job, Sawgrass. #815 is correct. And if Burt Mustin (who is suffering from "cholesterol") had retired a year earlier, they'd have made it way over the thousand mark by now! :)

2.) Joe Coogan
3.) Clark Rice
4.) Phillip Cabot *

The shaving lotion is called Stirrups and Saddles and is $4.00 per bottle. (What puzzles me is if Rob and Laura have a bathroom in their bedroom WHY then, is Rob's shaving lotion not in that bathroom?)
Question: Who was the host of the late night talk show Sally appeared on in "The Pen is Mightier Than the Mouth?"

Excellent question! That's a great "NitPick"! I'm now thoroughly ashamed that I didn't think of that inconsistency. :(
I guess we're now to assume Rob gets up in the morning, brushes his teeth and takes his morning whiz in their own master bathroom -- THEN switches to Ritchie's bathroom to shave and put on cologne. LOL. :)

It was blue. Oddly, Rob's Dad described it as a "Blue Diamond." Considering their rarity, the Petries were eitrher a very wealthy family (all the gems were "colored diamonds"), or he was misspeaking!
How many times did Rob kiss his wife's best friend and neighbor, Millie, in the series?

Ive ofter wondered this however...
If Rob & Laura are anything like our house, I usually take up all the space and time in the morning getting ready*makeup, hair, etc..) forcing my dear hubby to shave and whatever in the spare bathroom. Maybe our Laura was a bathroom hog forcing Rob to get ready in Richies bathroom thus explaining why his aftershave is not in the master bath:happyface

What type automobile do we see in the Petrie garage as Roger works on it in "The Lady And The Baby Sitter"? (From the date filmed, we know this car must have been BRAND-NEW.)
(This vehicle, btw, is at least the THIRD different car Rob has owned during the five-year run of the series. We see a different (larger) model in "My Husband Is A Check-Grabber"; plus, of course, his "dead bug" (aka: "Tarantula") in "Scratch My Car And Die". Not to mention "Laura's station wagon", which is referred to occasionally.)

How much money did Buddy "owe" Rob in Who Owes Who What?
Dorothys BestPal 07-23-2004, 02:18 PM Buddy owed Rob $26.00( Twenty five dollars plus one dollar for Marge's yogurt. However Buddy paid for Robs tweed jacket COD $49.97 which cancelled out the $25.00 :o
So, to answer your question Rob owed Buddy $23.97
David VP 07-23-2004, 11:40 PM Was it a Mustang?
Yes indeedy.
And a brand-new 1964-and-a-half model Ford Mustang to boot. No Mustangs even existed prior to Spring 1964; and, given the film date of the "Baby-Sitter" episode (August 18, 1964), we know it has to be a '64.5 model.
That car would be worth a boatload of cash today, I would surmise. :)
When reflecting back on this episode, I'm guessing that any Ford Motor Company executives watching that particular show (which aired on October 7, 1964) probably weren't too thrilled with seeing one of their company's brand-new Mustang "Pony Cars" up on blocks in Rob Petrie's garage and being worked on to repair a "stalling" malfunction. I wonder how they felt about their spanking new vehicle being shown in this negative light? :)
The Ford people were probably saying -- "Crap, why couldn't they have used a Plymouth in that scene?!" :) :)

I felt bad for Lincoln too. He deserved to win. He embarrased Rob at that Press conference at the high school.
Oh and speaking of this episode, Did anyone ever wonder why Rob had all those people working in his campaign, press manager, publicity manager etc.. Lincoln had no one and Rob only won by about 69 votes if I remember correctly. Rob must have been a Republican  Yet, the night of the election, They got the results from the plain old radio. Close, but no ceee-gar. :)
It was 636-9970 (aka: NEwrochelle 6-9970). :)
Interestingly, this very same number is given by Rob as the number for the editor of "Home & House Magazine" in the episode "Ray Murdock's X-Ray". So, that's yet another "goof"/"flub" with regard to continuity. :)

Next Q. -- How much cash (exactly) did Lyle Delp pilfer from the Petries at comb-point?
Whoever guesses correctly gets a free gold-plated bath spout autographed by MTM and Hilliard Decker.
And for an additional prize of two free Rob Petrie-rejected burial plots --- Tell me: Who was "Hilliard Decker"? :)
SawgrassSteve 07-29-2004, 07:45 PM Lyle got $51.00 in that little heist. Of which $40.00 was Millie's money given to Laura to buy Jerry's birthday present. I'll take my bath spout now.
I'll have to forfeit the burial plots, since I haven't the slightest idea who Hilliard Decker is.
When the Petries decided to have Richies birthday party at home to save money, why did they have it indoors instead of outside in the back yard?

I'm going to take a stab at the Hilliard Decker question: Isn't he the 75 year old man who saws the pipe to liberate Laura's toe?
The Petries had Ritchie's birthday party indoors because the gardner came that morning and fertilized the lawn with manure.

Yes, it is Henry Gibson, but the show that made him famous in the 60's was Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. He was one of the regular stars on that show.

Carrie 08-04-2004, 11:26 AM Oh, ok. I found that he had been on a few 60's shows, so it was hard to decide.

Carrie 08-04-2004, 12:15 PM He has 2 dogs and 75 cats. I'm still working on the second part. ;)
EDIT: I watched the episode last night and couldn't quite figure out what the "animal lover" said after he knocked on the back door. I replayed it a few times, but still couldn't figure it out. It sounded kind of muffled, but that could just be me. ;)

well... he identifies himself as "a friend". then rob asks,
"a friend of whom?" to which he replies, "a friend of
new rochelle." that's the answer i was lo0king for.
he also states his name once he's inside, but it's
rather unintelligible. the first name is "lionel", but
the last name is almost impossible to understand.
i've tried so hard to find the character's name
online, but to no avail. i was hoping that this (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-535/epid-11878)

anyway, yeah, "a friend of new rochelle" was the answer

SawgrassSteve 08-12-2004, 02:21 PM Yes,
I do think it was on perpose. Rock and Marilyn were the top heart-throbs and box office draws of that era, so we hear their names frequently. Who get's plenty of referrences nowadays? 40 years from now, people will notice how frequently we mentioned Tom Cruise and Halle Berry.
By the way, Jerry should be a little unsettled that Millie only kisses him when she thinks he's Rock Hudson!

SawgrassSteve 08-12-2004, 09:48 PM I'll go ahead and post another question.
What are Rob's and Laura's stats?
Height
Weight
Hair
Eyes
Age
Suit
Dress
Shoes
I'm not sure about these myself, but a dozen heads are better than one. Anybody?
Steve
algebra74 08-14-2004, 02:31 PM Rob is about 6' 1", and I am guessing that the character when the show started, was late 20s.
From a season five episode, Laura mentioned that they had been married for nine years, which would make her 26. This does not make sense, however, because Ritchie was 9, almost 10 at this point in the fifth season, and just from the flashbacks, I gather that they had been married a few years before having Ritchie.

We stayed just north of Corolla. We stayed in a rented house on North Swan Beach and you had to have 4 wheel drive to get there. We were 6.9 miles up the beach from the Corolla light house. Happily, the house had a satellite dish so I was able to watch TDVDS on TV Land most days. It's good to be back!!

They are briefly in bed together in "Ghost of A. Chantz," when all four of them are in the sofa bed together with their clothes on. That's the only one I can think of, Steve. Just as a bonus to my last question, the name Lebost is used in at least 3 episodes. Where did the name come from?

I want to say 3. There was the car they were driving in "My Husband is a Check Grabber, " which, I believe, is also the car Roger and Rob were working on in "The Lady and the Babysitter." They refer often to Laura's station wagon. And of course there was the Tarantula in "Scratch My Car and Die." In addition, Rob did buy that motorcycle, but that doesn't really count as a car. LOL!! All of the above!!! She would also dye her hair blonde, varnish chairs before a dinner party and send guests home without their pants and leave the mustard out of the peanut butter/avacado dip!

I'd originally planned for my answer to be #2, since #1 and #3 were a practical joke and an exaggeration, but I think you're right.
When you put it that way, Laura is likely to have done all of the above!
Congratulations. You inspired this poster!

What is Pickles real name?
Lolac
Larry Surrell 02-06-2005, 11:42 AM Sorry, I think my question was a little too obscure or perhaps poorly worded. It was from the episode "My Two Showoffs and Me". When Rob was arguing his case against letting a reporter in the room, he reminded Buddy and Sally of what happened when they used a tape recorder so they wouldn't have to take any notes.
Sally sang 84 choruses of "All of Me"
Buddy brought in his cello and did 4 hours of "Yuck-a-puck"

Ok,
After sitting for a solid week, I suppose no one's going to get this one without a hint, and here's a big one:
The answer is on this page; The Dick Van Dyke Show (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/thedickvandykeshow.html)
Steve
jillm816 02-16-2005, 10:58 AM According to Morey Amsterdam, the show was scheduled to return for the 1966-1967 season and was going to be seen in color for the first time. However, the plan was scrapped when Van Dyke decided he had enough.
Thanks for the big hint, Steve! ;)

I've always felt kinda sorry for her, with all of the talk about how good DVD and MTM were together and how people really thought they were married. I read somewhere that DVD forgot their anniversary one time because he was rehearsing late with MTM. :(

SawgrassSteve 02-23-2005, 08:50 PM She thought it was a wig!
Lolac
Correct Lolac,
Incidentally, that line came directly out of the pop culture of the day. By this time the show was an established hit series, and one of the several rumors about the show that began to spread around the country was that the reason MTM's hair looked so perfect week after week was because it wasn't really her hair at all, it was a wig! This line was probably the cast's way of poking fun at their themselves. It's probably also the reason why Mary changed her style from that now famous (and awesomely cute) flip to a slightly different look in the next season.

The kind a real fan of the show likes as a challenge. And Dorothys BestPal, you were close, so your memory must be formidable.
I admit it, I peeked! The tag line was, "The alan Brady Show is a Jeff, Greg, Barb, Lou, Ben, Ray, Polly Production."
As Rob explains it, "Well, Jeff & Greg are the kids, Barb is his wife, Ben is his lawyer, Ray is his brother, and Lou is his manager." Jerry asked, "Who's Polly?" Rob said, "That's his bird."
