View Full Version : Will 2005 be a watershed year for rock?
Dean Winchester 07-07-2004, 05:02 PM after my last post, it dawned on me that it's always about a 13-14 year interval whenever the rock industry gets shaken up, first in 1964, we had The Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who explode onto the scene, then in 1977, we had punk rock, as well as albums like Rumours that sold numbers that were unseen before that time, and then in 1991, we had the grunge invasion, as well as heavy metal masterpieces such as Metallca's "Metallica", Ozzy's "No More Tears" and GNR's two Use Your Illusion albums.
With that timing, does this mean that this is going to happen again in the next year or so? I mean, before Nirvana, as well as the albums I mentioned, hit in the last part of 1991, the music industry was in a real rut, dominated by faceless formula crap, and I believe the industry is in the same predicament now.
Nighthawk76 07-07-2004, 06:15 PM I usually agree with you Buffy, but I'll have to disagree with you here. I can't see anything exciting happining in music? IMO music today is at the lowest point that it has ever been.

re-read it, that is what I said. When all the great rock came out in late 91, it was after a really bad era dominated by Vanilla Ice, Nelson and MC Hammer's.... I was saying that considering all the crap that's dominating right now as well as it's about that time, that in the next year or so, the next big revolution should take place.
Cashodeen 07-07-2004, 06:46 PM Interesting deal with the 13-14 year intervals. Good observation, BuffySlayer79. It certainly has been that way in the past 4 decades. I've been hopeful that music can lift itself up from it's current horrid state. Some bands have seemed to emerge lately that I think are good rock bands, so maybe it's coming around...
Hollow 07-07-2004, 07:04 PM Metallica needs to go back to their roots. :grr:

As bad as some of the music was during the 89-91 period, I still do not think that it is as bad as what is going on in music now. Which is nothing. IMO

well, that is true.... which means the next revolution will be even better than the 91 one.
Give me Nelson, Wilson Phillips and Paula Abdul over Twista (isn't that the name of a wrap they sell at KFC?), Usher (I like his older stuff, but his new music is B-L-A-N-D) and Kanye West (can you appear on more songs man?)

I hope you are right.
BowWowsBreezy 07-08-2004, 11:22 PM I hope not todays but the again with all of todays rockers soundin like they either have their nose pinched or they havent gone through puberty i guess it can only better..
but I'll take Usher and Kanye and good R&B over rock anyday
Jrnygrl 07-09-2004, 12:46 AM What about Velvet Revolver? Has anyone heard their new CD, the one song sounds okay.
I agree, the music business needs some shaking up.

but the crap out right now IS NOT "good r&b". MTV-2 and radio doesn't touch stuff like Me'Shell Ndege'Ocello, Res, Angie Stone and Musiq. Usher has a few good songs, but I hate his personality, and I'd still take good rock over him anyday. And Kanye better than rock? haha!!! If you said "over current rock" it'd be more sensible.
This question was for the ROCK FANS in here, when a question poised for only hip hop fans is in there, you don't see people like me, Dukey, AKA and Ablairica post in that thread talking about how badly we think rap sucks. The music scene has gotten from bad to worse to even worse to the point where most people have started avoiding everything from the last 5 years, and I can't believe someone would say "I hope not". It's time for the music industry to get shaken up, enough with the crap that is popular right now!!!

YES!!!!! WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THE NEXT RIDE THE PUPPETS ALBUM FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS!!!! I think it would have been great if they re-recorded "...Justice" with their patented Metallicrunch as they did with the previous two albums before it.

yea i meant in general...and i did mean over current rock lol, and yes i agree about the good r&b too....because i do enjoy the r&b artists you listed too (with the edition of Maxwell, and i won't even begin to mention motown artists)... but my whole point was that there has to be a "revolution" in rock soon because it can't get any worse than it is now. I think you really need to chill out though..I was just postin my opinion and you have to accept the fact that not everyone agrees w/ you!

Metallica needs to go back to their roots. :grr: they need to do a new lo-res version of Garage Days - Rererevisited
Steve M. 07-11-2004, 09:31 PM Gee, could the music of the two thousand zeroes get any better? :p
Skywalker 07-11-2004, 09:55 PM Rock music has been dead for a long time. Unfortunately it may never return. It lives on in our cd players and our classic rock stations, but we will never see the likes of Beatles, Stones, CCR, Who, Zeppelin, Van Halen, Rush, etc. again.

(If you're right, this is Madonna's fault, you know! And Britney's. . . . )

what does Madonna have to do with it? We had both the metal invasion, the college rock invasion, and the grunge invasion AFTER she took off. Had Madonna completely killed rock off the face of the planet, then we would've never had the emergence of Metallica, Guns N Roses, Nirvana and co.
If anyone is to blame, it's Jennifer Lopez, she's the one who brainwashed the pop audience to embrace hip hop music when she started working with Ja Rule... and 3 years later, now all that you see and hear anymore is hip hop. Even tho things were bad, top 40 radio was still tolerable up until that point, now only r&b/hip hop acts can even score #1 singles these days.

what about hoobastank their still at number 1 (unfortunatley)
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 07-13-2004, 01:09 AM I sure as hell hope rock gets better.

their song peaked at #2 on the hot 100, but Usher was too big to let them spend one week at the top. The Reason is a hell of a much better song than Burn and Confessions Pt. 2.
When the next big thing comes along, 2001-2004 will be remembered as the worst era for music EVER. I know 40 year olds who lived through and hated disco, and say that what's out now is 10 times worse. J. Lo will never find work again because people are realizing all this crap is her fault.
*Bela Lugosi* 07-13-2004, 11:41 AM The music of today SUCKS, a lot! I wish that these stupid singers who look too young to drive cars, would just go away!
I also hate these young white boys and fat white girls who are about 14-17 years in age. I would like you to please STOP WITH THE ACT! You can't rap!
They try to act all like "yo dog, i haven't seen you in a while" or "yo, word up!" And other stupid stuff they say.
I especially hated it, when this young punk came into the store with pants that are about 56 inches around the waist, and he really was too skinny for his own good. Which made the pants look stupid as all hell! Once I remember seeing this kid, with sunglasses in the winter time, 5 or 6 gold chains around his neck, about 3 silver rings on each hand, and this big thick hat.
This generation really needs to grow up, and straighten out!

Dean Winchester 07-13-2004, 03:30 PM I agree with everything you said. There are just too many teen artists out now.
