I been watching this show all afternoon and forgot that the facial expressions of Don Rickles always made me laugh when i watched this show back in 1989 in local syndication. I also liked the chemistry between CPO Sharkey and CPO Robinson. Funny Show.

I think some TV station or cable network needs to bring CPO Sharkey back to life so the new generation can see CPO Sharkey reruns.

Don Rickles...one of the 60's and 70's best comic supporting players. Most any show that he would guest on would become electrically charged. I remember him blasting the unfunny Smothers Brothers, and his turns on "Get Smart" and "F-Troop" and "I dream of Jeannie" alone distinguish him apart from the crowd. "CPO Sharkey" may have fallen victim to many things...I don't remember the writing. Maybe it sucked. Just having Don Rickles act mad isn't funny without good writing. The nature of T.V. in the 70's....It's a shame that Don wasn't in his own sitcom earlier in the 60's when he was younger and the market was open to more physical comedy, a thing that Don also did well. Second Banana syndrome...Perhaps Don should have been part of a stronger ensemble cast, someone who could rival him for screen presence. In my humble opinion, that's the problem with too many sitcoms. Star one stand up comic, add some actors, avoid anything that made the stand up comic funny, shake, spread on thick, then yawn. Don Adams and Don Rickles were Navy buddies from Korea or WW2, imagine what a sitcom they could of had together after "Get Smart"! Don Adams low key approach along side of Rickles prickliness would have been perfect. Too bad ego gets in the way of such projects. "Friends" could never have happened had those young stars not been basically "green" when it began. T.V.needs more comedy "teams". Larry Storch, Don Knotts, Don Adams, Louie Nye....all good second bananas, good as ensemble, but perhaps, not all "star" material for sitcoms.
BTW...I'd love to see "CPO Sharkey" again. It was on around the time of another, crude, videotaped sitcom about a bunch of guys in prison. All I remember is it had a Hispanic ringleader and some dumb prisoner who always "got" jokes 2 scenes sfter they were told. Anyone remember this?

Another happy memory here about sitting around in my youth with the family and enjoying great laughs. If you are from NYC, you might remember that the 1977 blackout hit at 9:26PM just at the conclusion of an episode of CPO Sharkey.

I enjoyed CPO Sharkey when I watched it. On The Tonight Show that aired the day after Johnny Carson died, Jay Leno had Don Rickles and Bob Newhart as guests. Jay showed clips from two consecutive shows, one a Monday show where Bob hosted and Don guested, and the next where Johnny returned. On the first show, Don broke Johnny's cigarette box, which Johnny kept on his desk. On the next show, Johnny found out about the broken cigarette box and took the cameras across the hall at NBC to the studio where Don was in the middle of taping a CPO Sharkey ep so he could confront Don in person. I noticed the red light above the stage was on, meaning the show was taping at that minute. I'm sure it was a huge surprise to Don's audience to have Johnny make a guest appearance the way he did.

What i found dumb was putting CPO SHARKEY in an timeslot where the Spinoff Sanford Arms had already failed in which was Friday Nights at 8pm. CPO Sharkey shold have stayed on Wednesdays at 8pm where the Show had more success.

I remember seeing that episode! (the "Tonight Show" episode where Johnny walked in on Don Rickles)

Then, I remember, about a week later, Johnny had the late Orson Welles on one night, and Welles was talking about that, and jokingly said that NBC could increase their ratings by having Johnny walk onto the sets of some more of their shows unexpectedly, like that, then viewers would just watch NBC because noone would know what shows he would walk in on!!

"Would I buy the show, if it was on dvd?" That's a good question, TVSA. And the answer is: "I just don't know." I might, as it has been a number of years, since I last saw the show. And what is old, would somewhat be new again.

I've always wanted to see that. I've read that Johnny almost kicked Rickles' ass for doing that.

I remember CPO Sharkey as a kid vaguely, but I remember that I liked it. I liked the actor who played Seaman Pruitt, Sharkey's right hand man. I remember him being really slow witted, the show reminded me of Gomer Pyle USMC, a show that I loved as a child (but could not stomach today).

There are 2 words that describe the success of Mork and Mindy---
Robin Williams!

He was a superstar in the 1970s and the show was only a hit b/c of him. It was not a great show and not all that funny, but Williams was at his best in it and he is the reason it was a hit!

I agree with you even though I wouldn't mind seeing some of those shows again, only once.

Does anybody remember:

Brothers & Sisters? NBC's attempt at an "Aminal House" clone

Turnabout? husband & wife switches places ( The Museum of TV & Radio has
a promo of this in the collection...including the-then NBC promo jingle "NBCCCCCC...US !!"

and of course there was Supertrain and I think there was a show called Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

Mulligans Stew with Elonore Donahue and I think Chris Knight from the Brady Bunch did a sitcom too around this time called Joe's World or something like that.

alas..none lasted for very long.

BTW..CPO was actually on Comedy Central for awhile. Actually they did a marathon of it on the last weekend they aired it on their schedule called "CPO Sharkey's Dishonable Discharge".

I believe you're thinking of GRANDPA GOES TO WASHINGTON, a short-lived NBC series that premiered in fall of 1978, starring Jack Albertson and Larry Linville. More of a "dramedy" than a sitcom, but nice, in an almost sickly-sweet way.

There WAS a sitcom called MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, which ran for a single season (1962-63) starrring Fess Parker, who was in-between playing Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone. This series was an update of the classic Frank Capra film of 1939, which starred Jimmy Stewart.

Also, to add to the confusion, there was a short-lived NBC show called MR. SMITH, which came and went in 1983. This series featured that proven sitcom curse, the talking primate.

It's probably good that you didn't know all of this and since I do, I hope you'll excuse me while I step out to get my head examined!

I couldn't agree more. Don Rickles and Don Adams did appear together in an NBC-TV comedy special once (aptly titled "A COUPLE OF DONS"). Larry Storch, Don Knotts and Louis Nye were also favorites of mine. Rickles starred in several short-lived series but, like many
other actors (e.g., Paul Lynde and Tim Conway) was always funnier as a guest
on someone else's show. But I really thought CPO SHARKEY would be a hit. I
don't know what went wrong there. It was a funny, funny show (I thought).

The main reason I like CPO Sharkey is because Sharkey was similar to my other Favorite TV characters like George Jefferson and Archie Bunker, they were all easily ANNOYED-lol
