Ditto, my parents don't allow me in chatrooms, but they don't care if I go on message boards as long as I'm careful.

It's not nice to call his mother paranoid. There are so many internet horror stories out there, and a parent can never be too careful. Don't forget that he's only 12. She's doing what she thinks is best for her son, and I respect her decision.

As for having a policeman talk to her son, there's nothing wrong with that. It's probably a small town where everybody knows everybody. So if she has Sheriff Taylor talk to her pre-teen about the dangers of the internet, kudos to her. Good parents are protective. She loves her boy.

As I said recently, Chit Chat can be a hostile environment at times. There is a lot of swearing, fighting, gangups, R-rated jokes and pictures.

It would be a cold day in hell when I would allow my 12 year old child to come to this part of Sitcoms Online.

Any parents feel like weighing in on this?

She had a policeman talk to her son? I didnt know that.
Anyway, I did a poll here and the majority of the people that post at Chit Chat are teenagers, so maybe thats why its hostile at times.

I completely agree. My parents tell me frequently about all the crazy weirdos on the internet(they know I visit some messageboards, but nothing specific).

I agree i am 22 years old and i think Chit Chat can be such a hostile enviorment at times. I don't blame his mother being worried for his safety. I'm gonna stop posting at Chit Chat probably also. I really only like the games board anyways so i will probably just stay there and use the TV Show boards. There is no need for the stupidy that goes on here sometimes. I don't mean to sound cruel but some of it is really stupid and gets out of hand. I think that the moderators have alot on there hands to deal with. I hate the swearing, fighting, gangups, R-rated jokes and pictures, they really offend me.

This is a tough one. My oldest one is just starting to get online. But he only likes to look at the yugioh card sites. When he decides to get online full blown I WILL put on all of the parental saftey measures because of all the crazy BS that you can see online. As far as letting a 12yr old on chit-chat....I think it would really have to depend on the kid. Does the kid have a sence of maturity about him/her or does the kid act younger than his/her age. Chit-chat is not a bad place to go. It is very tame compared to some sites. A kid can see some pretty bad stuff just watching TV these days. You can't be on top of them all of the time. They will sneak around and find what they want. As far as for the fighting, cussing, r-rated jokes that are on here...a kid will see and hear the same stuff at school from his/her friends. You have to remember-the more you shield your child from society, the more they are going to sneak around behind your back to find things out. Be open with your kids and they will be more incline to tell you what's going on in their lives and not lie to you. BeaverBoys mom, in my opinion from what I've read, is going a little overboard. She should take the time to see what is on the chit-chat board. And maybe she has. We really only know The Beav from talking to him online. And no offense to him if he reads this, but she may think he is not up to a mature enough level to be on here. We have to accept her judgement. But the policeman thing....unless he's a bigtime troublemaker and he's into other things that he shouldn't be, then that is just a bit too much. He seems to be a good kid and I'm sorry that he has to go.
