i did a quick search, but found noting. i am 27 and a HUGE fan of the dick van dyke show, possibly a bigger fan than most of you who grew up with it! ( ;) challenge me!) i began watching the dick van dyke show in my late teens, so i've been watching religiously for ten years now. by far the best sitcom ever. anyway, i was just curious to see what the average age is of the members here. am i one of the youngest?

I'm 26. I've been watching it for about 12 years...I think. I started when it was part of the Nick@Nite line up. I can't remember when that started though.

I noticed that you live in Virginia. I live just up the road in the Shenandoah Valley. :)

wow - first reply and you're younger than me. that was a bit of a surprise.

I'm 48 and have been watching since it originally aired in the 60's. Growing up, it was always on in reruns. There was a dry spell for a while after college when it didn't seem to be on when I could watch it, but I have rarely missed it since it came on Nick at Nite a few years ago. And now with the final season coming next week, I will watch it as often as I want to. My last words to my husband Bob will probably be, "Oh, Rob!" I also live in Virginia, in Fairfax Station.

It's nice to meet another fellow Virginian. :)

My parents haven't said much about watching it when they were growing up, but my grandmother has. She and I were both counting down the days until The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited aired on CBS. :D

I'll be 44 in August, (now I wish I lived in Virginia too!), and I've been watching since the original episodes. My parents used to watch the show when I was a too young for school, and I watched with them. I never stopped!

 I'd have to say that I am somewhat surprised by the responses to this question. I've been hanging around this board for years, and I always thought I hung in the space between the "teens" and the "original viewers" of the show.

Although I don't usually share many personal details about myself on the internet, I guess I'll ask you to add me to the "26-years-old" club that has seemed to form around here ;)

I have a hard time remembering how long I've been watching the show. I would guess I started about 4 or 5 months before I found this website, which was over three years ago now (where does the time go?). I grew up in a house without a lot of TV access, and all I know was that this was one of the great TV shows I "discovered" my first few years living on my own and having cable TV. Over the past few years, The Dick Van Dyke Show has remained my all time favorite.

I would also have to say that I've really enjoyed this board. When I first found it, there weren’t even enough posts for more then one page. Now we are on page 13 of new posts! This place has changed a lot over the years.

I'd also have to say that although I don't have much time to post (and I don't tend to be overly talkative or opinionated to begin with) I read everything that's posted, and I feel very much like you all are my fellow group of fans. I'm always happy to get some time to come over and catch up on what's being posted. I feel like I've come to know many of you over these years.

I've noticed that since the DVDs came out, this board has seemed to come alive and stay pretty active. It's been great to see all the new people posting. I still remember the days when it would be great to get one new post per week! I hope this trend of being more active continues from now on.

Sorry for getting a little long winded here, but I wanted you all to know that I am constantly around, and I'm glad to have such a great group of fellow fans to hear opinions from. I'm also excited to find that a few of you are my age! It's great to know that this show will continue to be enjoyed by those of us from the next generation and hopefully the ones to come too.

Christina :bye:

You're not the youngest, Riley! I'm 14 (15 next month). It's good to see TDVDS forum has a lot of young fans! It shows how timeless the Van Dyke show is if the younger generation can appreciate and enjoy this sow as much as our parents (and grandparents) do.

P.S. Sorry I haven't posted in a while....I've had exams at school for the past week or so. But now they're all done and I can post here more often!:) A word to the wise: exams stink!

Just to mention, my 11 year old son and 7 and 5 year old daughters love the Dick Van Dyke Show also. They are very excited that season 5 is on it's way. I Love Lucy is another favorite for them. I am very grateful for the generations coming up that love these classic shows and eschew the garbage that is passed off as entertainment these days.

I turn 40 in another four months. I have to say I am surprised by how many young ones there are here.

I know I have gotten my whole family addicted, including my 12 and 5-year-old sons. My 12-year-old really likes the show and watches it on his own a lot.

I started watching the show in reruns on one of the local channels many moons ago, probably in the neighborhood of 20 years ago.

I remember filling up 10 video tapes back in '92 when N@N ran TDVD marathon for a week. My how times have changed. I can't wait for Season 5 because there are so many great episodes on it, but I can't believe it's the last season. Considering the quality of the 5th season, it's unfortunate there wasn't a 6th season, but alas all good things must come to an end.

I'm too young to have seen the show in primetime or remember seeing it on CBS daytime, but I've been familiar w/ the show for years, noticing when I was a kid that it was something Mary Tyler Moore did before she had her own show. I didn't appreciate it as much when I was younger, but my appreciation may have begun when I got a copy of TV Guide from my birth week and found a TV Guide Close-Up of a rerun of The Impractical Joker and thought that the plot looked like a good one. (Most of you can probably guess how old I am, or almost am, by the previous sentence. :)) I even remember wondering why DvD was on Nick at Nite, since it was still being rerun pretty extensively on local stations. I've just come to appreciate the show in the years since, and now I can enjoy eps of the show whenever I want thanks to the DVD set.

I think it's great that there are so many young fans here--you all have great taste! I'll be 38 next week, and I didn't start watching the show until it was on Nick at Nite in the early 90s. It seems strange to me, but I hadn't ever seen a single episode before then. I grew up with the basic 3 or 4 channels, including PBS, so I guess maybe it just wasn't shown much where I lived (Upper Michigan). I loved it as soon as I saw it, and it became a ritual for my roommate and I to watch it every night on Nick at Nite just before it was time to go to bed! I remember when I got my first DVD player about 4 years ago, I had been considering buying the DVDS collections that Time-Warner put out on video because I never thought it would come out on DVD!! Now, as others have said, it will be one of a few shows I'll actually have every episode of--who would have thought?

Hi KennedyDean,
Welcome to our board! Please post often. We love new fans!
About your question, I searched this one out a couple of years ago and came up empty. Like you, I thought it would make a fantastic addition to my collection of stuff from the show.
I just did another search (and I'm pretty darn good) and there still appears to be nothing out there :( .

That's disappointing. I think MTM and DVD together make a great team vocal wise. I like watching and re watching the scenes that they sing together. When MTM sings on her own it's fantastic!

SawgrassSteve
11-09-2004, 08:56 PM
I agree, KennedyDean.
And as a new fan of the show, one thing you'll find is that there just isn't enough stuff out there for us! Those of us who love this show, really love this show, but are constantly frustrated by the lack of merchandise available.
Dick and Mary make a great vocal team, true. But I've lately found myself drawn to "A Doodlin' Song," which is actually done in a trio with them and Sylvia Lewis in episode #69, "Too Many Stars." You'll come to it in Season 3.
And everything MTM does on her own is fantastic :eyes: !

I am 44, and have watched and loved The Dick Van Dyke Show for as long as I can remember. Definately since the late 60s, maybe even mid-60s. Ever since I was a little girl, I have wanted a house like the Petries', specifically the livingroom with the cool sectional sofa.:)

I am 25; another one of the "young" fans! I discovered Rob and Laura Petrie in high school on Nick at Nite. It is a very addictive show.

I have a feeling I am one of the youngest here, or maybe I am the youngest. I am only 12 years old. That does NOT mean I am a new fan of TDVDS or anything like that!! I was born and raised on it, with plenty other shows of the sort, such as MTM, I Love Lucy, Bewitched, etc., etc. Instead of watching Nick and Cartoon Network when I was little (because I had NO idea there were kid channels like that LOL), I watched TV Land and Nick@Nite with my parents 24/7. When I was about 8 or 9 I learned that (yes) there were other channels I could watch, including ones aimed at kids. I stopped watching all of the older stuff then for a few years. Recently this Summer, I was surfing channels, and ended up watching TV Land, and since then I'm hooked on all of the good stuff again. Surprisingly, I REMEMBER LINES from some of the shows, which it really starting to freak me out now, since I haven't seen these shows since I was 6 or 7. I have a SUPER long term memory, but THE WORST, I mean WORST short term memory LOL. Soooo that's a LITTLE (a very very little) about me!!!

That's cool. I wasn't planning on doing that or anything, I don't even remember that line soooo.... Now that I think of it, Buddy and I are quite similar. We both can be a little stupid, and we make up a bunch of jokes.... hmmmmm.... I could be getting somewhere. As for TDVDS in my generation, I don't really have any friends that will watch it with me. Why is that? I have made my friends watch it with me, just to make sure they don't like it, and they still don't. I honestly don't know anyone my age that will watch TV Land or Nick@Nite with me :( . They say the shows are old, and annoying...well...

Anyways, it's great to have people here that enjoy the show, and not just me! You guys are all great people, and I hope we talk more soon!!

FuNkYdOrYgUrL07,
Let me share a conversation between myself and my youngest daughter (now 17) when she was your age, as we were watching an episode :

Jaq: Dad, why didn't you guys like color back then?
Me: We did.
Jaq: Then why didn't they make TDVDS in color?
Me: It was too exspensive in those days.
Jaq: Oh. I think it would've been better in color, and more people would watch it. It's still good though.

So basically, I think your friends are just used to seeing things the way they always see them; in vivid color, not grainy b/w. :)

Right on! How can anyone NOT like those timeless classics? Today though, one of my friends Perrine (it's French... I think), were talking about I Love Lucy together. Apparently she likes some of the older stuff too! Yay! We're not best friends or anything, or really close, but we do talk a lot. That's why I never knew before. So now I know that I am not out there... that my buds are there too!

A little off topic (apologies in advance). I have ALWAYS been a Gene Kelly fanatic. If you haven't seen any of his films, try Singin' In The Rain first, then Anchors Aweigh. You'll be a fan for life.

May I just say to Nora that the "I am a fine musician" song that the group sings is SO very much addicting. Last night I was watching disc 2 of season 3 and was surprised when they did the song for "The Alan Brady Show Presents". I know this is the second time that I've seen them do it. How many times total do they do this routine? It is still very addicting and I can find myself singing it during the day!

That is a very addicting song. It surprised me as well, that it was on The Alan Brady Show Presnts. As far as I know it's only on two episodes. The Alan Brady Show Presents, and I think the other is Sol Somerez and the something something.... I think it's sort of like that. I can't remember. LOL.

question regarding the lyics:

in the sam pomerantz episode, when sally starts, she
says "we all are fine musicians, we practice everyday",
etc... everyone else, when they start their line, they say
"i am a fine musician, i practice everyday. i haven't
seen the christmas episode recently, so i can't say what
sally says in that one. i wonder if she messed up in the
pomerantz episode and they just kept rolling? or does
she say the same thing in the christmas episode?

I was born in '63 and started watching in the early 70's when the show was on one of the Philly UHF stations. Since VCR's weren't around yet, I actually used my oh-so-cool 70's tape recorder to tape the episodes on an audio tape and would listen to them at bedtime and would fall asleep to them (no reflection on the show). I still have most of the audio cassettes I taped from the 70's and am addicted to listening to them at night. (I haven't even purchased the DVD DVD's yet.) There's something entertaining yet soothing about spending an evening with the Petries that made/make it the perfect "bedtime story." :D

Although I'm 61, I never saw the show during its original run. I saw it for the
first time in syndication, I think in the 1970s. Or it might have been on TV
Land in the 1980s. I'm not sure.

goodolddays
07-23-2008, 01:52 PM
Well, one good thing (from my perspective) about syndication in the 70's is that the shows weren't sliced and diced to make room for commercials. Even my audio tapes, made mainly from Channel 48 WKBS in Philly in the 70's, have scenes/dialog that TVBland mercilessly (and often awkwardly) removed to allow sponsors' commercials in.

Thank God we're in the age of DVD's where we can have access to complete episodes of our favorite shows -- assuming the studios are bothering to release them to the public.
