That made me want to watch that movie again and I did. Great movie. They really need to remake it. I thought they would being that they did the stage version. Maybe they will....

I thought 'Wind Beneath My Wings' would've been higher in the list- still though, Bette's got two great songs in the list.

The songs I like in the list are:
1.All That Jazz
2.Footloose
3.The Rose
4.Ding-dong the witch is dead
5.Arthur's Theme
6.9 to 5
7.Shall We Dance (my fave song from The King and I is 'Getting to Know You')
8.Fame
9.Wind Beneath My Wings
10.Make 'em Laugh
11.Don't Rain on My Parade
12.Luck be a Lady
13.I got Rhythm
14.Aquarius
15.Born to be Wild
16.Cabaret
17.People
18.When you wish upon a star
19.Mrs Robinson
20.Singin' in the Rain (fave song from this is actually 'Good Morning'- never gets enough recognition!)
21.Over the Rainbow

21 out of 100 ain't bad! I totally agree with Over the Rainbow getting the top spot- I doubt there's anyone that isn't remotely touched by this song!

I know I'm likely to incur the contempt of the masses (or at least of several) by admitting this, but I've never liked that song. I have no explanation. I just don't like it. If I hear it, I have to turn it off or tune it out. I'm a freak.

As for the rest of the 100, there aren't many I'd have left off the list, but watching the countdown was a bit frustrating. The clips were short and the transitions often jarring. I know they had to go in numerical order, but listening to Days of Wine and Roses sandwiched between Fight the Power and the theme from Shaft made my head hurt.

My only other complaint is that it made me want to watch musicals, which I've now been doing all day. Still, there are worse ways to spend a day. I just wish I could stop humming.

That song should be in the top ten if not number 1. Great song!

I just dont get how Lose Yourself made the list. There are so many other songs that could have made the list but it had to be that one.:o

I'm disappointed. They completely overlooked the theme from "Smokey and the Bandit"! It should have at least made the top 5!

Maybe they should have called it the Top 100 music moments in movies, something other than the top 100 songs. A whole bunch of those songs weren't even done for the movie, they were just songs that were used. Those West Side Story songs were performed on Broadway before the movie, songs like Ain't Too Proud To Beg and Wind Beneath My Wings were around long before those movies included the songs, and any movie song list that doesn't have anything from Purple Rain...well, that's just wrong!

Hey they said they picked songs from musical's,songs that helped move the movie along, emotional moments,or just fun.

I totally agree with #1 and I agree Wind Beneath My Wings should have been alot higher up than it was.

My favorite movie song wasn't on there (The Neverending Story theme) but I knew that wouldn't be on there LOL

I read it in yesterday's paper this morning that "Over the Rainbow" was #1 and it became the all-time favorite song from the movie. This song was remade by so many artists. I like the doo-wop version of "Over the Rainbow" by the Dimensions.:) I don't have the 45 of that except this picture I saw on Ebay.

The Time Warp wasn't on the list either! If you have 'Aquarius' on the list you've gotta have The Time Warp!

My only other complaint is that it made me want to watch musicals

It's hard to find good musicals- but I really love watching them when I do find them! I'm not a big fan of the Fred Astaire sort of musical- I like the more modern sort- and occasionally find older musicals I enjoy.

I'm not a big fan of the Fred Astaire sort of musical- I like the more modern sort- and occasionally find older musicals I enjoy. I also like the more recent ones -- I'm a huge Sondheim fan, and Lloyd Webber has had his brilliant moments -- but most musicals from the last few decades have not been adapted to film (Evita and Chicago being the notable exceptions), so my LD/DVD collection includes a lot of stage performances that have been filmed for TV. I sometimes like watching the old MGM musicals (Astaire/Rogers, Garland/Rooney, etc.), but I prefer the adaptations of Rodgers & Hammerstein or Lerner & Loewe musicals: South Pacific, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, The King and I, Carousel, etc. The film adaptation of Camelot will always head my mental list entitled "When Bad Movies Happen to Great Actors...", but it's still a great score.

I was hoping that the huge commercial and critical success of Chicago would jumpstart another musical age in filmdom, but that hasn't happened. I blame Down With Love (not a true musical despite the duet, but still a throwback to that era). What the heck were they thinking?

All the good ones were WAY too low on the list. "Lose Yourself" beating "All That Jazz"? No way. There is just NO WAY.

The only ones that were as high as they should have been were "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and "Cabaret". Infact, the "Diamonds" part was the only part I saw of the show. I was at a friends house and her parents were watching it. I heard Nicole Kidman singing, so I RUSHED out into the other room to watch it.

After Chicago rights to some musicals were bought- but nothing seems to have happened. There was talk of a Guys and Dolls remake and a Footloose Musical film. I read about another musical being filmed a while ago- plus there's De-Lovely (definitely going to see that).

Musicals I like are:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Shock Treatment
Hair
Little Shop of Horrors
Chicago
Phantom of the Paradise
Hello, Dolly!
Funny Girl
Funny Lady
The Wizard of Oz
The Unsinkable Molly Brown (love this film!!!!)
Singin' in the Rain
The King and I
Gypsy (Bette Midler's version- liked it the best, haven't seen it in a while though).

Rodger's and Hammerstein is ok- but I was practically 'clockwork oranged' with them as a child- watching them so much. I want to see 'Xanadu' and 'A Chorus Line' to see what they're like. I wish I live near the West End or Broadway to see the brilliant stage musicals- the show 'Wicked' looks great- hopefully there'll be a movie of it too.

Your list of favorite musicals is certainly a diverse mix. (It's funny, you like the film Singin' in the Rain and you say you were "clockwork oranged" with R & H musicals -- a statement which evokes a wonderful image, by the way -- yet I was permanently put off Singin' in the Rain by watching A Clockwork Orange...)

I like most of the films you've listed, although I've never been a huge Streisand fan. It's rare to hear Phantom of the Paradise mentioned these days, despite its substantial cult following in the past, but it's a film I remember fondly. (I even have the soundtrack recording, and on vinyl at that.) I found Xanadu oddly entertaining, but maybe it was just the novelty of seeing Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton-John together that intrigued me. A Chorus Line is good, but I've heard that it is not even remotely comparable to the stage version.

I, too, prefer Bette Midler's Gypsy to the Rosalind Russell version, which is very unusual for me. I'm generally something of a purist and feel that remakes are rarely a good idea. In that same vein, I also don't like it when stars who have originated a role on stage are replaced with someone more marketable for the film version, unless a lot of years have passed and they're too old, or deceased. (The film version of Chicago would have been downright frightening with Chita Rivera.) Julie Andrews should have been allowed to star in the film adaptations of My Fair Lady and Camelot, and I'll never forgive Lucille Ball for buying the film rights to Mame and then starring in it herself. That role will forever belong to Angela Lansbury, yet I've even heard a horrible rumor that Streisand is trying to remake it for TV. Gaaahh! But I digress...

I know what you mean about wishing you could see musicals live on stage. Looking back, I think I would have liked to have seen more of them when I had the opportunity. I grew up in L.A., and when I was very young -- maybe six or seven years old -- I was taken to see Richard Kiley and Joan Diener in Man of La Mancha at the Ahmanson Theater. I've never attended another professional live production since, but that one experience changed me forever. I've listened to original cast recordings since before I can remember, and the music has been the one reliable source of comfort throughout my life. It's too bad that the mainstream film industry has become all about making money, and art be damned. Musicals aren't the sure-fire box office draw that films featuring explosions, gun fights and car chases are, so they don't get made very often. I don't necessarily subscribe to the notion that violence in the media breeds a violent society but, given the trends, it does make me wonder. Maybe all this world needs is more musicals! (Yeah, OK, probably not...)

I'm disappointed. They completely overlooked the theme from "Smokey and the Bandit"! It should have at least made the top 5!I agree, that's a great theme and while Bob Hope appears twice on list The Poseidon Adventure's Oscar winning theme The Morning After is a no show as well, grrr.
