View Full Version : Long Running Shows, That Could've Lasted Even Longer
barwars 06-20-2004, 11:57 AM Some long running shows die on their last leg, while others remain fresh till the end.
For this post only, long running is considered 7 Seasons
What long running show do you think could've gone on for a few more years, without dropping in quality??
While the Star Trek Series have always called it quits after seven seasons, I think "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine" could have gone another season or two without any drop in quality.

I'm not really sure, but I think "Next Gen" set the bar.
They had a good run, they revitalized the Trek TV Franchise, and by the seventh season they were about to take over the movie franchise, so the producers decided to end the series while they were on top.
The other series followed suit. Seven seasons and out.
I think it's a good rule.
Most sitcoms run out of ideas after five seasons anyway.

Central Perk 06-20-2004, 02:15 PM Cheers probably still could have had the same quality if it lasted one more season.
spunkygirl 06-20-2004, 03:15 PM I agree with TJL, Next Gen could have gone on longer.
Boy Meets World
Friends
Wings
Who's the Boss? Could have done a 9th Season
Sean Snow 06-20-2004, 05:34 PM Wings, Cheers, and Who's the Boss? were still pretty good in thier last seasons, so I think they could've both had another good season. Although not a sitcom, I also think Dynasty could've lasted at least one more season, if not more. Its final season was one of its best.
TVJunkie101 06-20-2004, 08:29 PM Family Ties, Who's The Boss?, even Cheers. Non-sitcom, I'd say Dynasty.
"Alice"
and non-sitcom, definatly "Melrose Place." It started to pick up at the VERY VERY end, like the last four or five episodes.

Even though it wasn't on for 7 seasons, I agree, it could have gone on for another season or two.

As much as I love watching these shows, they couldn't have lasted as long as they did.Three's Company was running out of ideas and without Cindy Williams(Shirley),the show couldn't go on.If Cindy didn't go off the show because she was pregnant,I would say that it could've lasted longer

Although I love it, Whos the Boss? wasnt even in the top 30 when it ended, so there is no way that if it went on it would be sucsessful.
James 06-22-2004, 12:48 AM I'll have to say Family Matters, Happy Days, Home Improvement, Perfect Strangers, Step By Step, and The Waltons.

I reemember reading an interview somewhere with John Ritter talking about the show when they haad decided to end it, and he was saying all the cast members thought they were making the right move, because they were running out of ideas andd starting to repeat things. "After all", he said "how many more jokes aand funny situations can we do about, say, not paying the rent on time?"
And as for L & S, it stopped getting funny when they moved to Calif., and half the town went with them! Then when Cindy Williaams left, thaat was when it REALLY "jumped the shark" (which comes from, ironically, an episode of "Happy Days"!)
I remember seeing the beginning of aa non-Cindy Williaams ep. on N@N a while aago, aand, just from thaat 11 minute or whaatever the length was, you could tell the show was STUPID!!
