View Full Version : How Come
ilovethe80s 06-19-2004, 01:08 AM How come some movies on basic cable allow swearing? I just think it's unnessesary. I mean i am surprised by that i find it odd. Because some of the channels use the "s" word. Like on TBS when the character says bull.... they leave it in. I just find it odd. It happens like on TBS and USA and other cable networks as well i think.
Hollow 06-19-2004, 01:12 AM because it's the year 2004.
dandelion wine 06-19-2004, 01:29 AM The other night I was watching Nip/Tuck on FX, and heard the words "s**t", and "*sshole," over and over. I've gotten used to hearing the Lord's name taken in vain on cable channels like AMC for a while now, but that took some getting used to. We've come a long way in terms of what's censored and what isn't these days.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-19-2004, 01:37 AM I was watching Sex and the City on TBS before and they had a guy's BARE butt on the screen. And this was only like 9 or 9:30 at night! Well, that's not that bad IMO. It's a lot worse when it's on HBO!

Lifetime recently showed the movie Nine Months and they edited out hte "p" word, and used the word "private" instead, but then later in the movie they leave the "p" word in. Why not either edit out the word each time it's used or just leave it in. Seems silly to edit a word only some of the time. They also edited out the word a**h*** and put the word "idiot" in. It was funny because I've seen that movie a bunch of times, and I knew what word it was supposed to be.
AMC does that with G.D. all the time, and I've never understood it. Or they'll censor one word, yet another one will slip through.

Nip/Tuck also has a TV-MA rating.
TheGreatPretender 06-19-2004, 09:25 AM some channels go waaaaaaaaaaaaay over board on dubbing. have u ever seen the tele version of the breakfst club?
ilovethe80s 06-19-2004, 09:28 AM I understand that but i guess some of those words aren't considered swears anymore because if they were wouldn't they bleep them out? Because if children were watching i don't think they would want them repeating those words. I dunno. I guess they don't censor that much anymore i guess it depends on the channel and the time.
EmoJoe 06-19-2004, 09:34 AM "Bull" isnt a bad word.

Most kids should be asleep by then, that's 10pm and 1030pm Eastern time.

On TBS?

Yes. They are the only national network to air it. It's already been edited enough.
Mrs. Ducky 06-19-2004, 02:53 PM My mom wouldn't let me watch Sex and the City on HBO, but I watch it all the time on TBS.

Not me. This is what I do all summer: Wake up at 2:00 PM, get on the computer, go up to my room and blast music, watch TV, go on the computer again, watch TV until they start airing infomercials and go to bed.
My life is pathetic.
spunkygirl 06-19-2004, 05:28 PM In a way it's silly, I was watching the movie Tremors on TBS one day and they cut out every swear word, to some movies it just doesn't work, and with that movie you could tell what they were saying anyways
Now if every other word out of the characters mouth in almost every scene is cussing then that's way overboard and should be edited.
barwars 06-19-2004, 05:44 PM The stupidest thing is the bleep out the "hole" of *sshole, but not *ss.
I have no problem with swearing on TV. But not overuse, like any word or phrase -- too much isnt good.
And maybe Im missing something, but when they edited Sex and the City for TBS, did they edit the jokes too??
Because it isnt funny AT ALL.
I watched 2 episodes and never laughed once.

We get all the advantages. It comes on here at 8PM. And in California, it comes on at 7PM, since TBS only has one feed from the East Coast.

LOL! I have no life either. Don't feel bad. I don't even go outside anymore for more than a minute or two(and that's only to check the mail or the rain guage if it rained).
Nanny Fine 06-19-2004, 06:36 PM I'll never forget watching Days of Our Lives in the 80's and hearing Steve (Patch) say pissed. I almost passed out. Now it's nothign to hear that.
FX airs a warning on their adult geared shows. My boyfriend and I watch the Shield every Tuesday and that show is FULL of swearing and cussing.
Makes it more real I guess.
I have no problem with it if it's on later in the evening. And if an impressionable kid is up that late, well... it's not the networks' job to babysit.

I agree.
-*Forever*- 06-20-2004, 01:19 AM The absolute best censoring I ever heard (best = hysterical) was when I was watching High Fidelity on Comedy Central. Jack Black came in and went, "Holy shoot. What the frog is that?"
And yeah, it really bothers me how much they edit movies like Die Hard on F/X.... blllelhhhh.

I used to watch the show back when it was on HBO unedited and I don't think I ever laughed. I was really shocked when it won an emmy for best comedy series. I'm not knocking the show, but I don't think it's a comedy.

Yeah, I was just gonna mention Die Hard. The best line in the whole movie was just ripped to shreds. ohno:

Hahaha yeah i saw that movie because it's a John Cusack movie so i watched it on TV and didn't hear any bad words so i didn't know how bad it was but then i rented the video and was surprised. But i still liked the movie anyway.
