View Full Version : I have to get my wisdom teeth taken out
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-16-2004, 02:31 AM My dentist just told me today. I'm not looking forward to it. All 4 need to come out before I go back to school in August. I have very low pain tolerance so I'm scared how that'll be. Please tell me your experiences if you've had yours taken out.
I really hope I heal by the time I go back to school. I'll have like 2 or 3 weeks so that should be enough. I'm also NOT being put to sleep when they get pulled. I'm freaking out!
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 06-16-2004, 02:48 AM :faint: That sucks!! I have 4 impacted wisdom teeth now, and I can feel one coming in real good. He said theyd only have to come out if they hurt, or theres no room. So far, theyre fine. My teeth are weird. I still have 2 baby teeth thatll more than likely never come out. -.-

I had mine out while I was a senior in high school, they'll knock you out when you get them taken out, yes it's painful afterwards just like any surgery would be, but it can depend on the individual, the pain goes away after a few days, at least it did for me, and I had all mine taken out at once, they were coming in slanted
Sorry you have to have this done, but at least you can have it done now and get it over with and not have to worry about them later in life
HuntingtonM15 06-16-2004, 03:01 AM I had mine taken out a year ago. The pain was HORRIBLE the first day. Though, after that it went away pretty quickly.
I really have to get mine taken out too..
Mijada 06-16-2004, 05:53 AM I had to have mine cut out by an oral surgeon. I had them taken out two at a time. The pain wasn't too bad. I hardly even used any of the pain meds that were prescribed to me. The worst part was not being able to eat anything for 3 or 4 days after. I had to survive on soup and popsicles.
Sargent Stewie 06-16-2004, 08:47 AM Is a wisdom teeth like the one on the front and top?
Moonlight Lady 06-16-2004, 08:51 AM I had all four taken out a couple month after I graduated from High School. They knocked me out for it though. The pain wasn't too bad, The anesthesia made me feel sick though, that was the worse part.
*MIBabe03* 06-16-2004, 09:27 AM I had mine taken out when I was 16. It didn't hurt that bad, but there was a lot of blood afterwards.
I am Him 06-16-2004, 09:35 AM It doesn't hurt to have them taken out, because they use the anesthetic.
But afterwards, you'll need pain killers, and you may not be able to eat solid food for a few days.

No they are the teeth in the very back. They are barely visible.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-16-2004, 10:03 AM My dentist told me that I won't be knocked out for the procedure and it's "just like having a filling" done. Everyone I've talked to seems to say they were knocked out so I don't know why I won't be!

You don't need to be knocked out. You won't feel anything.
Sterling Holobyte 06-16-2004, 10:31 AM I don't know why he wouldn't knock you out. Maybe he's a sadistic dentist who likes to give people pain, who knows!
I had two taken out(of course, I only had two wisdom teeth to begin with. I guess I wasn't wise enough for four.;) ), and the dentist gave me an intravenous(sp?) anesthetic, and said I would be asleep but not asleep, in that he could call my name and I would hear him and wake up, partially. I do remember waking up to him tugging on one of the teeth, but with that anesthetic, I didn't even care. I didn't feel any pain. In fact, I didn't feel any pain until hours later, after the anesthetic had worn off.
Maybe that's what he means by not knocking you out?! I can't imagine a dentist doing that kind of procedure with just novacaine.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-16-2004, 10:42 AM Well, he better give me something so I don't feel the pain! If he doesn't I'll make him.

He will give you anesthetic to eliminate any pain, but you will still be awake.
"Knocking out" means being put to sleep.
Tuesday Weld 06-16-2004, 12:34 PM I still have all my wisdom teeth, but sometimes they get sore. I really should have had them removed years ago, but as long as they don't bother me too much, I'm not gonna worry about them.

Yep. With each person, the growth rate is different. It seems like only half the people here ACTUALLY have their wisdom teeth come through...and it's always at different times. Three of my wisdom teeth came through when I was 16, and it wasn't until last year that the final wisdom teeth came in. They all came in fine- but I need to have them removed, as well. For the other people, they don't even come in at all or come in all screwed up, giving them another reason to get their wisdom teeth pulled. For some other people, they come in when they're young (my ex best friend had her wisdom teeth pulled when she was 14).
Gahhhh...all that talk of getting them pulled is making MY wisdom teeth ache.
Janice 06-16-2004, 12:49 PM Good luck with that. I don't recall having it done myself, but have them give you a ton of novacaine, and you should be all set.
Cashodeen 06-16-2004, 03:01 PM I don't blame you for opting to be awake, but a lot of people think it's harder that way. Only one wisdom tooth developed in my mouth, and it's impacted. When I get it removed, I'm going to demand that I be given valium. Ha.
If I were you, I'd ask for valium or some other tranquilizer to take before the procedure. Or you may want gas, but I think that stuff sucks.

I have to get mine taken out, too and all 4 of mine have to come out as well. I understand your fear and concern because I'm going through the same thing myself.

I guess he's saying like with the numbing medicine, the pain will mirror a filling since you don't feel anything. I had a filling last October though and I didn't have any numbing medicine at all.. but I think I would die if I was having a tooth taken out without something to numb the pain! I had lots of teeth pulled when I was little... apparently it was to start my teeth straightening but it never worked out. I didn't get braces til like 6 years later. Wisdom teeth are a lot different than baby teeth though.

When I got a filling a few months ago, they gave novacane to the side of my mouth where it was.
EricIdlefan 06-17-2004, 09:19 AM Since you are young Brent better take them out now than when you are in your thirties or much more!!
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 06-17-2004, 09:45 AM it's not near as bad as everyone makes it out to be
I should know, i just had mine out about 2 weeks ago
I was asleep during the whole surgery. They put that laughin gas on me and the last thing i remember was asking the oral surgeon what that pulse thing was he was putting on my finger...
I woke up and started talking stupid, because i was still in a cloud from that gas, but that wore off in about 30 mins. I felt great, the gas makes you feel wonderful!
I got home, and was tired, not too much pain because your still num from surgery, but I was sure to take a pain killer before it wore off...
The third day was the worse for me. The only thing I was able to eat for the first 3 or 4 days was apple sause, mash potatoes, and milk shakes.
But by Sunday ( I had my surgery on a Thursday) i was able to eat Pizza.
Just take your pain killers like the bottle says and sleep all the time.
You'll be fine, it's nothing to freak out about.
Charlie Max 06-19-2004, 01:31 PM It's better to take them out now then later. The older you are, the harder it is for the dentist to pull them out.
To lessen the chances of a painful recovery, just stay in bed for 3 to 4 days after the surgery and take pain killers. You'll be fine if you rest and take your medications.
