You always heard J.J tell one of his girls-"Let's go get a Big Mac"

In the episode-Loss of Confidence, J.J tells Joanna, We can go out to dinner after i get home from Art School because Mcdonald's doesn't close until 11 o o'clock-LOL

BTW-was a BIG MAC the only Burger Mcdonald's sold in the mid 70's? That was the only Burger J.J mentioned.

Where should J.J. have taken his dates?

No, the Big Mac was not the only burger McDonald's sold in the mid 70's, it was just a popular one that got to be their trademark of sorts, just like Burger King and the Whopper.

He could have gone to a restarunt, not Mcdonald's

Where was he supposed to get the money to afford a date at a restaurant? Steal it from a supermarket?

His character just seemed to be oo old to take a female to Mcdonald's. Seem like that would be more suited for Michael.

If you're broke you're broke! Besides she was lucky to anywhere! if it had been me she would have been eating at White Castle! A burger for you and a burger for me! ;)

That still doesn't answer the question of where he was supposed to get the money.

Yeah, where would he get the money, LOL. McDonalds was very popular back then. They used to make commercial after commercial.

Solomon, I must admit I Do enjoy your threads, and always looks forward to them:lol: But besides that....Hell, if I went out on a date with someone who looked like JJ, and then he had the audacity to take me out to McDonalds on a date, I would had dumped his skinny ass faster than a New York Second, regarding that he was poor or not; it seems to me that JJ should had at least made some effort to take his date to a somewhat decent restraurant...instead of an inexpensive fast food place...

Once again, there is no answer for where J.J. was supposed to get the money for anything more expensive. If you criticize one way of doing something, you need to have an alternative suggestion. Did James have some extra supermarket loot stashed around the house that we didn't know about?

If he didn't have the money he shouldn't have been dating.

Well, apparently his dates were satisfied with McDonald's or they wouldn't have gone. Going to McDonald's on a date may not be high class living, but if it made two people happy and it didn't hurt anyone, why should anyone care?

Well I have to agree with you there; if these ladies agreed to go on a date with JJ in the first place, knowing of his situation, and basically liking JJ for being JJ, and being indifferent to the fact that he could not afford to Wine and Dine them; then I am sure they were satisfied of having JJ treat them to a .50 cent hamburger at McDonalds...but I would be offended if I a man asked me out on a date, and took me to a fast food place, when I knew that he could make more of a better impression...

We should also remember that the Evans lived in an impoverished neighborhood, and many of the ladies that J.J. dated probably understood his living situation because they were in a similar one.

I think it's difficult for a lot of us to truly understand what extreme poverty means. For some people, an empty wallet means no money, not a trip to the ATM at their bank. When people have little, they learn to appreciate the simpler things and are often happy just to have food in their stomachs.

Very true...I was just stating from my own perspective; but I guess I need to realize that JJ and the Evans family were poor, and that taking a date to McDonalds was a privilege, instead of an insult...I honestly think IF JJ took a girl out from an upper middle class environment, and through her own ignorance...might be offended (through her own narrow minded perspective) if she was on a date with JJ, and he spent only .50 cents on a Big Mac...when she is USED of having other dates taking her to upscale restaurants...

Tara i saw a ep of GT today and Thelma's date took her to a Earth, Wind, and Fire Concert and a Restarunt afterwards. So you can see how STUPID they made the J.J character. They wanted viewers to see that he was not mature enough to take a female on a real date-LOL

I could understand JJ taking his dates to Mickey D's when he was getting minimum wage at the chicken place and the rib joint...I think everyone means he should have taken his dates to real restaurants when he was making more money, like when he had the job at the ad agency.

Let's see, they mentioned:

MCDONALDS
RAID SPRAY
THE WALTONS

It was more than a sitcom, it was advertising space. ;)
