View Full Version : Which annoys you more...? ConservativeBalla 06-09-2004, 09:30 AM ...Which accent annoys you more? Chocoholic 06-09-2004, 09:39 AM I hate the Boston accent, and I LIVE in Massachusetts! I try so hard to not talk with a Boston accent. Mijada 06-09-2004, 10:12 AM Neither one really annoys me but I like the Yankee accent more. I work with a guy from Tennessee and I sometimes have difficulty understanding him because his accent is so thick. *MIBabe03* 06-09-2004, 10:14 AM Southern accent. I live in Texas but I have not adopted the southern accent, thankfully. I'm staying true to my northern roots. vienna waits 06-09-2004, 11:42 AM yankees! david&maddie4ever 06-09-2004, 06:41 PM I would've said southern, but I didn't vote because I figure it's probably just the accent that you're not used to. I'm a Yankee girl. :D ¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 06-09-2004, 07:30 PM What the hell is a Yankee accent? dawsongirl 06-09-2004, 07:38 PM Define "Yankee." Does that mean just anyone from the north who doesn't sound southern? Plus, there are so many dialects of each. People in GA sound different that people in Texas. I live in Iowa, but I sure don't sound like Minnesotans or Wisconsinites. And overall, neither annoy me. Penny Lane 06-09-2004, 07:57 PM Originally posted by dawsongirl Define "Yankee." And yes, there is definitely a Chicago, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Upper Peninsula Michigan(the latter three are similar):D accents. But please, no offense intended to our Southern friends here, but some thick Southern accents sound absolutely illiterate!! FamilyTiesGOP 06-09-2004, 08:48 PM The damn yankee accent annoys me and my family. My parents are from N.C. and we live in VA. And we are definately not "illiterate" in any way, nor is anybody in N.C. When we travel to Williamsburg (which has major tourists from the North), we can always tell if people with the yankee accent sit near us because they have to be the loudest, most obnoxious speakers of anybody in the restaurant. Mijada 06-09-2004, 09:04 PM Originally posted by dawsongirl Define "Yankee." Does that mean just anyone from the north who doesn't sound southern? Yankee refers more to the Northeast. So people from Connecticutt, Massachussetts etc. have the Yankee accent. ¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 06-09-2004, 09:06 PM Originally posted by Mijada Yankee refers more to the Northeast. Ay papi. That is the problem. Everyone with the same accent sounds perfectly fine to each other! "Normal" depends on the ear and tongue of the listener. Everyone thinks people from different regions talk different. *Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-09-2004, 10:53 PM Southern...gah :wallbang It's kind of cool sometimes, but other times it's pretty annoying. <--makes sense? :grr: Mr. Television 06-09-2004, 10:58 PM Southern. Unfortunately after living in the south all those years, I now have one.:D Small Wonderian 06-09-2004, 11:03 PM I guess the northern (or yankee) accent because I'm not too used to hearing it. dandelion wine 06-09-2004, 11:09 PM To be honest, can't say I find either of them to be all that annoying. dandelion wine 06-10-2004, 12:52 AM Originally posted by Jen1989 Ditto. Even though I live in Texas I don't have a southern accent. I've lived in Texas all of my life, yet people rarely seem to believe me. They're always saying, "You don't have the accent." Which I find strange. Cashodeen 06-10-2004, 03:25 AM I'm a big fan of accents. As a whole, I like the Southern ones just fine. But there is one type... the exaggerated, po-dunk version that annoys me. I'm sorry, but people who have it sound uneducated and lazy. They need to enunciate. Cactus Jack 06-10-2004, 08:04 AM Originally posted by little insomniac I've lived in Texas all of my life, yet people rarely seem to believe me. They're always saying, "You don't have the accent." Which I find strange. I dont have the accent either  ConservativeBalla 06-10-2004, 08:44 AM I'm aware of the different types of both southern and northern accents, but I didn't want to overanalyze and look like an episode of Seinfeld here. Speaking of which, the Yankee one annoys me more. Here in my state, any state above Oklahoma is Yankee to us ;) :D . I DO have a southern accent/twist, but I rarely mispronounce words. But I do constantly say "Couple o' few", "Ain't", "Was" instead of "Is", and I hate NASCAR. Anybody ever been to a restaurant called "Dick's Last Resort"? My family and I went to one of those in Cleveland, and the waiter would not let up on my Dad's southern accent. He was asking my Dad if he liked NASCAR, well, you know the stereotypes ;) . Something was funny that I read in this topic. I can't remember who said it, it was one of the 851976 people who have Clay Aiken in their avatar. Something about not noticing accents until getting to Boston. I never knew it was so different until on that night of "Super Millionare" a couple o' few (:wallbang Dangit :wallbang) weeks ago, Regis asked this Boston woman to say "Go park the car in the yard." She goes, "Go pack the caa in the yaad." *MIBabe03* 06-10-2004, 09:39 AM Originally posted by Penny Lane There are many Northern accents. The East Coast have several. I'd also like to point out that in the UP of Michigan they almost sound canadian. Instead of saying the word "about" they say it like "aboot." I'm considered a troll and not a yooper. And just as there are different Northern accents, there's also a variety of Texas accents. FamilyTiesGOP 06-10-2004, 02:55 PM Some people in VA have a stange accent like when they say "house" I can't really discribe how they do it but it is more like two oo than "ou" but it isn't exactly two oo either. However, very few people still have that accent. I haven't heard it in a really long time. Rhiannon 06-10-2004, 03:01 PM Yankee because I have a Souther accent :D EmoJoe 06-10-2004, 04:49 PM Southern Accent. I live on the east coast and I dont think I have an accent. Brent88 06-10-2004, 04:53 PM I HAVE a southern accent. Ain't! :p Ya'll! :p  EmoJoe 06-10-2004, 04:54 PM Originally posted by ?MsConanOBrien? o0o0o I never noticed. I've spent time around both and tend to lapse into different accents when I'm around different people, so neither is extremely annoying. The yankee accent does start to get grating after awhile though. MandieR1980 06-10-2004, 08:34 PM accents only bother me when I can't figure out what they are saying. consentida 06-10-2004, 08:56 PM I dont mind accents really. Its fun trying to imitate them though. Cactus Jack 06-10-2004, 08:57 PM Originally posted by little insomniac  Mine comes out every now and then. Ah  Dude111 10-09-2025, 09:25 PM I picked "Yankee Accent" I have several friends from the south and I love thier accents...... Our friend Todd is from the south and I would love talking voice to him!!! |
