Jonathan Smith was arrested on the charges of rape and murder. After a short trial in which DNA evidence was presented along with Captain Kate McCafferty testimony, Jonathan Smith was sentenced for life without the possibility of parole due to the violent nature of his crimes. Upon exiting the court room, Jonathan Smith swore his innocence and publicly announced his intent to get even with Captain McCafferty.

Monday 8 a.m.

Stacey was heading into the Division after a fun filled weekend with a large smile plastered across her face. Life was definately looking good from her perspective. More case files were being filtered in her direction, the captain wasen't pissed for any reasons, and a new love interest was just blossoming. Yep, life was good!!!!! Too bad the criminals couldn't take a break.
But as Stacey sat down to begin working on paperwork, her mind drifted towards her new love interest. It was chance that had brought her and David together. They both had been at the same coffee shop exactly 2 weeks ago. David had been walking past Stacey, when he slipped on something. The result: two lost coffees and a budding new relationship. Stacey was called out of her musing by the captain's voice.


Captain: Stacey! Stacey! Come back to Earth.


Stacey: Sorry Captain, my mind must have wandered off for a minute.


Captain: It sure must have headed in one hell of great direction. I have been trying to get your attention for severeal minutes now.


Stacey (Cheeks burning): I'm sorry Captain. What can I do for you?


Captain (grinning): Can you please file these and make sure that you don't drift off again.


O.K. so things at the division could have run more smoothly for Stacey this morning. Focusing on the task at hand, Stacey went to file the reports and the Captain went back into her office. Little did either of them know, that the greatest challenge was yet to come. One of the hardest cases was just about to land in their laps.

Tuesday 8:45 a.m.

Magda and Jinny were busy investigating an arson case. Nate was busy looking into a potential homicide, while Stacey and Rena were performing an interview with a key witness. Everything seemed to be running smoothly. Alone in her office, Kate McCafferty was sorting through paperwork when her phone began to ring. “McCafferty here”. There was no answer on the other end. Kate thought that to be rather strange but chalked it up to a wrong number. When it occurred for the second time within a 30 min period, she began to wonder. Usually police chiefs don’t get crank phone calls. With a shrug of her shoulders, Kate headed to a scheduled meeting with Hasbert, another irritation.

Tuesday 1:00 P.M.

Kate just returned from her meeting with Hasbert. As she entered her office, she noticed a bouquet of beautiful red roses. With uncertainty, she looked around for a card to gather a clue as to who sent them. Finding none, Kate walked out of her office and called out to the inspectors.

Kate: Hey guys do you know who sent the flowers in my office?

Rena: Cap, we just assumed that you had a new love interest and were holding out on us.

Kate: Very funny, Rena. Seriously, when I do get one, I’ll let you know. Till then can you please find out who delivered them and who accepted the delivery.

Rena: Sure Captain, I’ll get right on that.

Kate went back into her office, still puzzled over the flowers. As she sat down, she began reviewing her messages. Several pertained to cases and three others were hang-ups. Kate was not sure yet what to make of those and instead focused on the mounting pile of files. Meanwhile, Rena was having difficulties trying to find the origin of the Captain’s flowers. Better yet, she couldn’t find a single person who had accepted the delivery. All of the inspectors had eaten lunch at their desks, and Stacey had gone out for food with her new man, David. All of the inspectors had gotten a chance to meet David earlier today, as he surprised Stacey with a lunch offer. Rena knocked on the Captain’s door.

Kate: Come in.

Rena: Sorry Captain, I haven’t had any luck tracking down the flower order, but I’ll keep trying.

Kate (looking rather perplexed): Thanks Rena. I just can’t think of anyone who would send them and not give a card too.



Tuesday 4:35

Mystery figure (starring at a picture of the Captain): I wonder how much you enjoyed those flowers today Kate? That is only the beginning of what I have planned for you. Soon you will wish that you could just die instead of living through the upcoming hell.

After a long day at work, Captain Kate McCafferty was looking forward to a peaceful and quiet evening at home. As she pulled into her driveway, she noticed a package propped up against her door. Grabbing her suit jacket, she locked the car and proceeded up the steps. Upon further inspection, the package was a long white box, the kind roses usually came in. Carefully, Kate grabbed the box and unlatched her front door. Dropping her suit jacket on the sofa, she went into the kitchen with the foreign box. Again, she looked for a note of some kind and found none. An uneasy feeling began in the pit of her stomach and traveled upwards.

Not knowing what to expect, Kate gingerly began opening the box. As she began to lift the lid off, confetti shot into the air and directly in her face with a loud pop! A letter was carefully placed on the inside of the box. It read: YOU ARE MINE….

Wednesday 7:30 a.m.

After a restless night, Kate decided that sleep was futile. Thoughts kept circling through her mind with no concrete answer. Were the tokens meant simply as a joke or were more sinister forces at work. Kate reached the Division and walked straight through into her office without so much as a nod.

Raina: I wonder what is bothering the Captain this morning. Must be something big, she never comes in here without acknowledging her wonderful underlings!

Magda: I don’t know, but the best thing you can do is stay out of her hair this morning.

Raina: Think I will go see if she needs anything.

Magda (groaning) Did you hear any of the advice I was trying to give?

Raina: What? I don’t think that I heard you correctly!

Raina proceeded to the Captain’s office and knocked on the door. She heard a muffled come in and turned the knob.

Raina: Hey Cap!

Kate (looking expectantly) Yes

Raina: Well, you seem a bit out of sorts this morning and I was wondering if I could help in any way.

Kate (with a sigh) No thanks Raina, I’ll take care of it myself.

Raina hung back waiting for her Captain to divulge more about the situation, but it was clear that the topic was sealed.


Wednesday 11 a.m.

Mystery figure (talking to a picture of the Captain): Oh Kate did you like my last surprise? Well this next one will surely go off with a bang! Soon my darling you will know what it feels like to have your life ruined. I better get going. I wouldn’t want to miss this for anything in the world.

Wednesday 12:30

Kate was heading out to her car with the intention of grabbing some food for lunch. As she reached over to insert the key into her car door, a mysterious hand came around the side of her face. Before she could scream, a cloth quickly came down over her nose and mouth. That was the last thing that Kate remembered before she succumbed to the funny odor. She was dragged to a waiting car and deposited into the back seat. “Now I lay me down to sleep”, the kidnapper kept chanting as he drove away. A few more minutes and an explosion was heard. The inspectors ran outside to see the remains of what once was the Captain’s car.

The flames engulfed the entire car.

Nate: Can you see the Captain inside?

Jinny: Only thing that I can see are the flames covering the car!

Raina: If she is in there, we have to get her out!

Just then the fire engines came screeching into the parking lot. Quickly assessing the situation, the fire team asked the investigators to step back and allow them to do their jobs. The entire car was one massive fire ball; surely no person could have survived. After what seemed an eternity, the flames died out and both the fire team and the investigators approached the car with trepidation.

Magda: Oh my god!

Nate (with a surprised expression): The Captain isn’t inside. Well if she isn’t in the car, where the hell could she possibly be?

Jinny: I’m getting a really bad feeling about this. Something is not adding up. The Captain would absolutely not leave a scene, especially one in which she was the potential victim.


Wednesday 2:00

Mystery figure: Oh Kate, I knew the day would come when you would pay the price. I had to wait a while and be extremely patient, but now I have you exactly where I want you. Sleep now, for when you wake, my fun will begin. In the meantime, I think I’ll throw your poor detectives a clue as to your predicament. The game of cat and mouse is just about to begin, but remember cats love to eat mice!

As Kate regained consciousness, she realized that she was completely tied to a chair. Her leather restraints were cutting deeply into her flesh, both at the wrists and at the ankles. She rolled her head from side to side, trying to get a look at where the hell she was. However, due to poor lighting and obvious shackles, that was not a promising option. Slowly a door began to open and Kate got the first view of her captor. Suddenly, she realized that it someone familiar. Thinking back, she had seen him at the Division sometime within the last week. Kate tried to recall under what circumstances he was at the station, but the situation was eluding her. She reasoned that it must still be due to the chloroform, but at the back of her mind something was nagging her. At first her captor simply circled around the chair as if examining a captured prey. Then he abruptly stopped and leaned his face forward till it was mere inches from Kate.

Mystery figure: Well Kate do you like your new living accommodations? I went to a lot of trouble to bring you here. Have you figure out yet who I am and why you are here?

Kate: What do you want with me?

Mystery figure: All in good time, but for now just sit back and relax. Then again, you really have no choice in the matter.

Kate (realizing she had seen this man with Stacey): You were at the Division speaking with Stacey. That is why you seem so familiar to me. You were taking her to lunch!

As the pieces started to fall in place, Kate realized this maniac was Stacey’s new boyfriend, David. As this realization hit home, she began to panic. The fear must have been written across her face, because David broke into a large smile.

David: Yes Kate, I was with Stacey. I used her to get to you and seek revenge for all the pain that you have caused me and my family.

Kate: I don’t even know you or your family.

That statement didn’t go over well. The next thing that Kate felt was a quick backhand to her cheek.

David: Think real hard Kate. This is just the beginning of what I have in store for you.

Well, I like a darker overtone.

David: Kate, you disappoint me. I know your family pretty well. There is of course your daughter and her precious little angel that you seem rather fond of. You two do make quite a cute ensemble when playing at the park. I believe her favorite piece of park equipment is the swings.

Kate (shouting): You leave both my daughter and her child out of this stupid vendetta!

David (laughing): Oh Kate, now that really isn’t nice to raise your voice to me. Do you need to be taught a lesson in manners?

Kate: Go to hell!

Before Kate could respond further, fists pummeled her face and mid section. Grunting from the force, Kate realized that David had no tolerance for insubordination. Good Kate thought, at least both of us can be miserable at the same time. As the fists continued to rain down, Kate’s body could stand no more and she slipped once again into unconsciousness. David continued to watch Kate for some time until darkness settled in. “What a poor host I am. I didn’t even offer her any supper or drink before bedtime. I think I'll pay the inspectors a visit tomorrow and find out how well they are coping without their leader".

Thursday 7:00 a.m.

At the division, the inspectors were scrambling about trying to gather information about the captain’s disappearance. As far as they were concerned this became their number one priority and their toughest challenge. This jigsaw puzzle was missing several pertinent pieces and timing was of the utmost.

Jinny: I just got the paperwork about the bomb in the captain’s car. It reads that the device was homemade and had a detonator.

Raina: O.K. so the kidnapper had to be within that vicinity for a few extra minutes to detonate the bomb. Did any of the witnesses that we talked to mention a vehicle of any sort in that general location?

Stacey: several mentioned seeing a variety of passing vehicles, one in particular sped away shortly after the explosion. The description of the car was a black or blue Ford Taurus with a partial license plate: VWJ…

Nate: So we start with the car. That is about the best clue so far to go on.

Raina: A few days ago the Captain received some red roses that she wanted me to identify the sender.

Magda: How far did you get with that?

Raina: The Captain seemed sort of upset about them, but I couldn’t find any information regarding the mystery person who ordered them or which courier delivered them.

Stacey: I’ll try to figure that piece of this case out.

Jinny: Magda and I will check with the DMV about the car.

Raina: I guess that leaves Nate and I to recheck the scene and go the Captain’s house. Maybe some answers will turn up at the house.


The inspectors headed off in different directions in hopes of finding answers to this unsolved mystery. As Stacey was trying to pull information, David walked in.

Stacey: Hi David.

David: I just heard about the Captain’s disappearance on the news. How awful. Are you guys at all close to figuring out what happened to her?

Stacey: Not right now, but we have a couple of leads to check out. I’m sorry but I am going to have to cancel breakfast this morning. I really need to work on this case. It is just so hard because there are not many clues.

David: Do you think that I could be of any help?

Stacey: That is so sweet for offering but the best thing that you can do is just to let me work.

Meanwhile with a groan, Kate began to wake up. She was still strapped to the chair and at this point her ankles and wrists were raw from trying to free herself. “Well what a wonderful situation you are stuck in”, Kate thought unhappily. No food, no water, no escape route, and a lot of pain. As she inventoried her predicament, Kate realized that David had probably broken one or more of her ribs. Any slight movement caused her a great deal of pain. With a sharp intake, Kate screamed into the air HELP. Unfortunately, no one was near to answer her cries.

Jinny: The DMV ran that partial plate that we gave them and came up with this entire list of potential hits. There must be about 300 vehicles registered in this area alone fitting the description.

Magda: That is a lot of ground to cover and we are running low on time. How do you want to break this up?

Jinny (rubbing her eyes): Let’s start from the beginning and see how far we can get. I just have this funny feeling that the answer is staring us in the face and somehow we are all missing it.


Thursday 3:00 P.M.

At this point, Kate was hungry, thirsty and exhausted from trying to free her limbs. She also was no further in remembering who David was or what case he was associated with. As thoughts circled through her mind, the door began to open.

David: Hello Kate, are you enjoying your stay here? I just came back from the Division and you should be so proud at the vain attempts your inspectors are making on your behalf.

Kate: Actually, the living accommodations suck.

David (walking over to Kate): Is that any way to speak to your host? Tsk, tsk, tsk Kate, I even brought you a present.

Kate: More exploding boxes perhaps?

David (laughing): Not this time! Why don’t you take a look at this picture?

Kate (infuriated): I told you to leave my grandchild out of this mess! She is completely an innocent party.

David (shouting): An innocent party! So was my half brother Jonathan, but you still managed to put him away. Do you have any idea what prison did to him? He killed himself in there and you are to blame.

Suddenly the pieces fell into place for Kate. She remembered the case from about a year ago where Jonathan Smith was arrested on the charges of rape and murder. After a short trial, Jonathan Smith was sentenced for life without the possibility of parole.

David: Now are you remembering Kate? I sure hope so because you certainly have a lot to pay for. This is only the beginning, but where are my manners? You must be mighty hungry and thirsty by now. Can’t let you die on me this quickly; I still have things planned for your visit. Be back in a few minutes with your first meal.

As the door shut, Kate blew out the breath that she had been holding unconsciously. “At least now I know why this lunatic has me”, she thought.

Friday 7:45 a.m.

The inspectors were diligently working all night trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together regarding their missing captain. Stacey had just run out to get some drinkable coffee in order to make life more bearable. The words on the computer screens began to blur and swim in front of the inspector’s eyes from the lack of sleep. Just when Magda thought she couldn’t read anymore names on the DMV list, one name popped out in front of her. She called the rest of the group over.

Magda: Hey guys, guess what? Our very own David owns a car fitting the description of the one that sped away on the day that the captain was taken.

Jinny: Maybe that's just a coincidence.

Magda: Or maybe not. What do we really know about this guy anyway?

Raina: Well Stacey seems pretty happy with him, but then again Stacey doesn’t always have the best judgment.

Nate: And he has been hanging around here asking questions about our investigation. Just the day before, I overheard him speaking to Stacey about the case.

Magda: So our “friend” is just curious or does he have an ulterior motive?

Jinny: I think it is time to find out. Maybe we are just grasping at straws but this is the best clue so far to land in our lap pertaining to the captain. She has been missing for almost a week!

Friday 9:30

David: Kate, my dear. I have a very special day planned for you.

Kate: Oh really! I guess I am not really in the mood much to get all excited over your plans.

David: That’s what I like about you Kate; you are always full of wit and sarcasm early in the morning!

Kate: Another beating perhaps or something more original?

Dave: Oh I think that you will definitely appreciate all of my hard efforts. Hang on one sec while I get something.

Kate: Don’t take too long, while the cat is away the mice will play.

As David walked back in Kate grew incredibly agitated. What have you done? she cried out. Kate began struggling against her bonds with renewed energy. Her breathing became labored due to the broken ribs that she had sustained earlier in the week from her insubordination.

Kate (screaming): No!!!!!!

David (laughing): I was wondering what it would take to break you. Guess now I know.

Kate (crying): What have you done!

David: An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. You took away someone special to me and now I returned the favor. Don’t fret too much Kate; she really didn’t feel that much pain when I killed her.

Kate: How could you? She was only a child!

David: Now Kate, you really were too young to be a grandmother. I solved that problem for you!

Kate (weeping uncontrollably): I’m so sorry little one.

Okay this fic was going good up until your last post. Why would you write such a thing? Its sick. "Oh lets write about some guy killing an innocent baby for whatever reason." Thats terrible. You just lost a reader....

As Kate awakened from her drug induced state, she began realizing that the terror and confusion she felt was due to the drugs. Katie Ann's death had simply been a hallucination. As the fog receeded from her mind, Kate held out hope for her inspectors to find her quickly. She wasen't sure how much more of this she could take.

Back at the Division, Stacey had just returned with Starbucks coffee.

Raina: That smells wonderful!

Jinny: Pass me one, don't hog it all....

Magda: O.K. so our next step is to question David.

Stacey: How come?

Magda: Well an interesting clue came up while you were off getting this delicious coffee. It seems that David owns a car matching the description of the one that was near here during the time of the captain's abuduction. Do you know where he is right now?

Stacey: I can try to reach him on his cell phone if you think it is necessary. But do you really think that somehow he is involved?

Raina: Well we can't rule him out as a suspect unless we talk with him.

Uncertainty crossed Stacey's face. "Could I really be dating the person who orchestrated the captain's disappearance?"

Stacey called David and requested his presence down at the Division. Not suspecting anything out of the norm, David gladly accepted the invitation without hesitation. He was eager to find out how stumped the inspectors were over their missing captain. Little did he imagine how close to catching him they really were? As David strolled in nonchalantly, Stacey directed him to an interrogation room. The rest of the inspectors filed in one by one and threw a cautious glance in David’s direction. All at once, David began to feel some tension.

David: What’s going on here? Why am I in this room, Stacey?

Stacey refused to answer his questions directly. Instead, she allowed Raina to take the lead in the questioning of this suspect.

Raina: David, can you please tell me where you were on the day of the captain’s abduction? Is it true that you own a vehicle with this license plate?

David (caught off guard): What the hell is this all about?

Raina: Answer the questions, David

David: Do I need a lawyer? This conversation seems rather unpleasant to me.

Nate: Do you have any reason in particular why you might need a lawyer at the moment?

David: Well apparently I am being interrogated. By the way I do not appreciate being invited here under false pretenses.

Jinny: Well isn’t that too bad. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but funny little coincidences are just starting to add up for us. Now tell us about the day of the captain’s disappearance.

David: Unless I am under arrest, I am leaving. Stacey I can’t believe that you would allow these “inspectors” to do this to me.

Stacey: If you are innocent, then I am sorry. But if you aren’t, then you will be sorry and I will personally see to it!

David stood up and walked straight out of the room. His entire body shook with fury at the gall of the inspectors. “How dare they!”. However, as he neared his vehicle, David began to realize that he did indeed have a problem. “Well I guess the game of cat and mouse has just gone to greater stakes. Little do they know that I am playing for keeps!” Considering David’s reaction, the inspectors did believe that he had some involvement in the kidnapping.

Raina: I think we should follow him. I just have this feeling that I can’t explain.

Nate: Well he was certainly pleasant!

Stacey: Well what did you expect? First I call him asking him nicely to come down to visit me and then we bombard him with a series of accusations.

Jinny: I know that this is hard for you Stacey, but the captain’s life is on the line.

Magda: I agree with Raina, let’s follow him.

Jinny: What are we waiting for, I’ll drive! Let’s go.

WoW I just read this all last night..I LOVE it!! I LOVE writing too and I write fan fictions and stories all the time. SomEthing in common..were both good at writing lol aNyway..I really love the story..KeeP it up!:talk: :clap:

The inspectors loaded into two cars and proceeded to follow David. After a short drive David pulled into his driveway, slammed the car door, and rushed up the steps.

Jinny: Hmmm….he was in a big hurry. I wonder where the fire is?

Raina: It is probably the one that we lit up his $ss back at the Division!

Jinny: Listen guys let’s just sit tight and see what our suspect is up to.

Raina: I don’t want to sit tight. We have been waiting for a break in this case and I can just feel that the captain is trapped inside.

Magda: Do you just want to raid the place? Somehow I think Hasbert will get a really big kick out of the headlines that would generate. I could just see and hear it now.

Raina: Well let’s start around the perimeter of the house and if we see or hear anything unusual, then we can enter.

Nate: I got a bad feeling about this plan.

With guns drawn, the inspectors circled the house in an effort to catch a glimpse of anything occurring within the confines of the house. As Stacey peered into a window with the curtains slightly parted, she thought she could faintly make out David hovering over someone. Was it simply wishful thinking or was the captain genuinely inside. Stacey raked her brains over what to do. As she was about to call the others over, she heard a loud cry from a woman.

David: Hi Kate, I know that you have been missing me!

Kate: Nah, your too much of a pain in the $ss for me.

David: Listen Kate, I have had about enough of your sarcasm. It is just about time for your next dose and I know how much you have been enjoying their effects.

David leaned closer in to Kate to administer the drugs. As he did so, Kate got a glance of the gun tucked into his pants and screamed. David suddenly startled, hesitated for a moment. But that was long enough. With a splinterin of wood and shattering of glass, Stacey entered. David quickly turned around in surprised and sneered at Stacey.

David: Well sweetheart, the fun is just about to begin as he raised his weapon.

Stacey Drop the gun, David.

As David pointed the gun in Kate’s direction, the rest of the inspectors tried to get a clean shot of David. Unfortunately, his body was positioned in such a way that was too close to Kate’s. They feared that any attempt at shooting David would also result in hitting Kate.

Stacey: David let’s talk about this. No one needs to get hurt.

David (laughing) Innocent people have already suffered. Kate still needs to be punished for her involvement. She made sure that the court convicted my brother.

Raina: What the hell is he talking about?

Jinny: I don’t know. He’s crazy anyway, who cares what his justification is.

Raina: Stay here. I got a plan.

Jinny: Wait Raina, where are you going? Get back here! Just great, now I have to worry about you as well.

As Jinny continued to look on she could see that the captain was in a lot of pain. Her breathing was labored, her face was a mass of bruises, and she looked as though she was having trouble focusing. “That jerk was going to pay dearly for what he put you through, she thought”. As Jinny continued to survey the situation, see could clearly still see Magda and Nate. The big question was where did Raina run off? As if on cue, Jinny could see Raina starting to approach from the opposite side. “What is she thinking? She is going to get herself killed! Sometimes I wonder about her common sense”. With great agility, Raina managed to guide herself into the same room as David, Stacey, and the captain. She caught Stacey’s eye and signaled her to continue to talk as she got into a better position. Once there, she made her presence known to the group.

Raina: Hey David!

David whirled around to the sound of Raina’s voice and in that instance discharged his weapon. No!!!! Stacey cried……..
Who will survive and who will say goodbye???? Stay tuned!

Stacey rushed over to where David was lying in a pool of blood. She felt for a pulse but found none. He had died instantly when Stacey had fired her weapon and landed a square shot to his chest. David’s gun had gone off barely missing Raina in the process. Instead the bullet wound up in the wall just to the right of where Raina had been standing. Clearly Raina had been lucky. Jinny rushed over to the captain and started undoing the shackles that held her weak body.

Kate: Cheer up, I can’t look that bad.

Jinny: Yes, you do.

Kate: O.K. you win!

In the meantime, Nate and Magda had requested an ambulance for their captain and a police detail to seal of the premises. Completed with this task, they went over to Stacey. She still remained in the same spot next to David’s body.

Kate: Raina that was a stupid thing to do. You could have been killed!

Jinny: I told her that but she wouldn’t listen.

Kate: Well when I feel better remind me to knock some sense into her.

Jinny: With pleasure.

Raina: Hello, I am still in the room ya know.

Kate: Yes and as long as I am alive, I will make sure to follow through on that.

More exchanges were not possible; the ambulance had arrived to take Kate to the hospital. As they loaded her onto a stretcher, Kate lost consciousness. The paramedic team became concerned and quickly began to assess all of the damage done to her by her captor. They realize that she had sustained massive damage and at the moment the internal bleeding was critical. Calling ahead, they notified the hospital of the precarious situation and rushed off. Once again, the inspectors were left to worry about their captain. At the hospital, Magda tried to get information about the captain's condition. All the hospital would release was that Kate was in surgery and it didn't look good.

Madga: We can't loose her now, not after everything she has been through and survived.

Raina: The captain's tough, she'll pull through. Besides she still wanted to kick my butt, remember?

Jinny: Yeah, me too.

Raina: Please let her be alright. This waiting is driving me crazy. By the way did you notice Stacey. She seems really shaken up after killing David.

Magda: I think it was the first time she fired a gun. That is always the hardest.

Just then several medical personnel started running towards the operating room.

Raina: What does that mean? Is the captain alright? Why won't someone tell us anything!

Wow, he really kicked Kates butt!!!

As the doctor's worked to stabilize Kate, the inspectors grew more anxious. It felt like an eternity before a doctor approached them to speak about their captain's condition. "Currently, she is still critical and the next 48 hours are going to be the most crucial. However, we are optimistic for a full recovery, at least physically. At this point, we cannot guess as to the psychological ramifications of her ordeal until she awakens", stated the doctor. Upon hearing this news, the inspectors were both grateful and uncertain.

Raina: When can we see her?

Doctor: In a few hours. Why don't you guys go and grab some food.

Jinny (muttering under her breath) Who can eat at a time like this! I'll pass.

Nate: I think I am going to go check on Stacey. Since we got here, she hasen't spoken a word. I think I might try and convince her to head home.

Nate approached Stacey cautiously. He noticed that she appeared rather white and shaken.

Nate: Hey Stacey isn't that great news about the captain?

Stacey (with tears in her eyes): Great news. If it wasen't for me she wouldn't be lying in some hospital bed fighting for her life!

Nate: None of this is even remotely your fault! I think that you need some time away from here. Let me drive you home.

Stacey: I am staying right here, dammit.

Nate: Listen, let me take you home for a little while and I will promise to bring you back. I think that you need some time to process everything that has occured in the last 24 hours.

Stacey: I can handle this, just leave me alone.

Nate: Please let me help you.

Stacey finally acquiesced and allowed Nate to drive her home. Nate opened the door to Stacey's apartment and waited patiently to be invited inside. Once Stacey was comfortably settled on the couch, Nate brought over a couple of drinks. As the evening progressed, Nate lent a supportive shoulder to cry on. They fell into a quiet sleep in each other’s arms that night, they were truly one.

Stacey realized two things almost simultaneously, it was morning and her entire right arm was immobile. She saw that Nate had fallen asleep beside her. Actually, he was more laying directly on top of her quietly snoring. With a small smile, Stacey gently nudged Nate in an attempt to awaken him. With a few groans, Nate popped his eyes open.

Nate: What time is it?

Stacey (rubbing her arm): I’m not sure but its morning already.

Nate: I guess we both needed some sleep. Do you want to head straight to the hospital?

Stacey: I think I’ll stay here and freshen up, and then I can see you later.

Nate (with a shrug): O.K. I’ll get out of your way. See you there.

As Nate exited Stacey’s apartment, he called back over his shoulder “Thanks for the squishy pillow!” He proceeded downstairs and into his car. On the ride over to the hospital, he continued to review the events of the last 24 hours.

Back at the hospital, the inspectors were finally granted clearance to visit with their captain. As they entered the room, they took notice of all of the equipment and IV’s that were hooked up. They circled around the bed and anxiously waited for Kate to say anything.

Kate (in a weak voice): Well, when the hell can I get out of here? This hospital gown is really fashionable, and I hear the meals are top notch, but I can think of only one place to get terrible, mucky coffee!

Raina: You scared the hell out of us.

Jinny: I can see this ordeal really affected your way with words!

What the inspectors didn’t know was that Kate had been awake for some time. She had mentally inventoried the damaged she had suffered during her confinement. Any noise outside of her door caused her worry. But she couldn’t show the inspectors her vulnerable side, they were too ecstatic to have her back. It was only a matter of time, she thought before those feelings of fear would simply disappear or would they?

After several hours, Kate insisted on the inspectors taking a break and having some relaxation. Kate assured them that she was in fine and capable hands. She was looking forward to being discharged soon but was slightly concerned that Stacey had not appeared with the gang as promised. As Kate leaned against the pillows, she could feel the anxiety building inside her. She tried desperately to squash the mental images about her imprisonment from her mind. However, those images appeared as disjointed and continuous flashes. In an attempt to break free of the painful images, Kate tried to refocus her attention. She reached for the telephone to dial Stacey. However, after numerous rings and no answer, Kate finally replaced the phone into its cradle. Try as she might the images kept assalting her. Just when she thought she couldn't handle anymore, there was a knock on her door.

Kate: Come in.

Stacey (looking frightened): Hi Cap...I brought you these.

Kate: The flowers are beautiful! Why don't you put them over there on that table.

Stacey placed the flowers along side the other arrangements. The captain was certainly popular. As Stacey turned around, uncertainty clouded her face.

Kate: Stacey are you alright? Why don't you move the chair closer and let's have a talk.

Stacey (hesitant): Ummmm O.K. Listen before we begin this chat I just wanted to inform you of my decision.

Kate looked on expectantly and waited for Stacey to continue.

Stacey was not exactly sure how her captain was going to feel about what she was going to say next. "Well I guess there is always a first time for everything", she thought.

Stacey: Captain, I ummmmmmmmm think that you should know something. I feel terrible about what you must have been through and can't even imagine how you are coping inside. But for me, I have come to a decision.

Kate: O.K.

Stacey: Before I begin, I just want you to know what an incredibly heroic individual you are.

Kate waited patiently for Stacey to continue. She seemed somewhat lost and uncertain, so Kate gently coaxed her on.

Stacey: Captain, a mutual friend passed along the name of a good psychitrist. He thought that I could use the help to sort out my feelings and to deal with all the guilt I feel. I'd like you to consider also going to see someone, if not this very same person. I know that I was deeply affected by all this tragedy and you are so incredible strong. But I think that you need to deal with all that has happened to you both physically and emotionally as well. I....

The captain continued to stare at Stacey without even acknowledging a word. Stacey began to feel uncomfortable under her scrutiny and stopped speaking.

Kate: How dare you come in here and tell me that I need to see a trained professional to deal with what I have been through! So you feel guilty and therefore I should see someone. Get the hell out of here now!!!!!!!!!

Stacey: But captain I was only trying to help.

Kate's face was a mixture of fury and anxiety. Her entire body shook with rage and she screamed at Stacey to leave at once. Stacey got up to leave and carefully left a business card on the table alongside of Kate's bed. Meanwhile, Kate's mind began to race through all the terrible events of the last week. She couldn't make the images stop and she picked up the nearest vase and hurddled it across the room. The vase shattered into a million pieces, just like Kate's heart. "Will I ever be whole again?" Kate cried out.

Completely drained, Kate leaned back against the pillows. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the business card lying on the table. She carefully reached over and fingered the card. At that moment, the attending nurse walked in to check her vitals. She also confirmed that Kate was making great progress and would be released tomorrow. Sleep however didn’t come easily for Kate that evening. For the most part, she lay in bed wondering what the future had in store for her next. The next morning Kate was discharged from the hospital and she took a cab home. She couldn’t believe quite how much her life had changed in such a small amount of time.



Several months later……………………………............................................

It was Christmas time at the Division and the day had already started with a blanket of snow. The inspectors were busily trying to buy last minute gifts for the secret Santa exchange and decorate the office for the holidays. At 4:30 Raina knocked on the captain’s door.

Raina: Hey captain, are you coming over tonight to exchange presents?

Kate: Sure I’ll be there! I can’t wait.

Raina: Great, this is going to be so exciting. I can’t wait to see who picked my name.

Kate: Well you certainly tried to pry the information out of everyone of us!

Raina (pouting) I was just trying to make sure that no one forgot about me.

Kate (laughing): How can anyone who has ever met you, forget?

It was good to hear Kate’s laughter ringing through the Division. Her first couple of months back had been rocky, especially dealing with Stacey but now she seemed to be more settled.
Later that evening, Kate pulled up to Raina’s apartment. It was a chilly night, breaths coming out in white puffs. The weather called for more snow and Kate thought at any minute it would start. Looking up into the winter’s night, she caught site of a sparkling star. “I wish I might, have my wish tonight!” Kate said out loud. Magic was in the air and this was only the beginning.

By the time Kate entered Raina's apartment, the party was in full swing. She took notice of several things at once. The brightly colored decorations seemed to sparkle in ever corner, cups were full of egg nog, and the apartment had a wonderful aroma of cinnamon. Kate carefully placed her secret Santa gift next to the growing heap by the fireplace.

Jinny: Captain great to see you tonight.

Kate: Jinny, this place looks amazing. Leave it to Raina to put together such a wonderful party.

Magda: Hey captain thought that you could use some egg nog.

The party proceeded into the wee hours of the morning. Finally about 1:00 a.m. the group gathered around to exchange gifts.

Raina: Finally, I have been waiting for this moment forever! Who had me????? Fess up!

Nate: Well......

Raina: It was you all the time?

Nate: Actually I had Jinny!

Raina: Very funny Nate!

As the group finished handing out their gifts, Kate walked over to the individual she had chosen.

Kate: Here this is for you.

Stacey: You had me?

Kate: Yep, I did and I hope that you like it.

As Stacey unwrapped the beautifully wrapped gift, her eyes began to sparkle with anticipation. Underneath the tissue wrap was a dog collar. With some confusion, Stacey looked up at Kate.

Stacey: I don't own a dog?

Kate: I know that!

Stacey: Then why the collar?

From the bedroom emerged Nate carring a pug puppy. The puppy had a big red bow attached to his collar. Kate then told Stacey to turn around. Hesitating at first, Stacey spun around to find a cute puppy in Nate's arms.

Stacey: He/she is beautiful!

Kate: It's a boy.....

Stacey: Captain this gift means so much to me.

Kate: I somehow recalled you mentioning that every holiday you wanted a puppy but never got one. Well never say never! Just don't call me to babysit....Ha:)

Stacey: I think we have a dilemma on our hands............

As the group gathered around the puppy, Kate slowly made her way over to the big bay window. A slow smile spread across her face as she noticed the quickening snowfall.

Kate: Hey guys, I think it is time to head home unless ya plan on camping out here for a few days. It is really starting to come down out there.

Jinny: Well why don't we hitch up a sled to Moose and let him take us home! HA!

The others gathered up their belongings, thanked Raina for a wonderful evening, and headed out into the blustery cold evening. Brrrrr, this just might turn into a blizzard after all. Better drive slower. As Kate rounded the next corner her car began sputter. The engine light appear on and she began coasting before the car finally shuddered to a halt.

Kate: Just great! Better call Triple A and get a tow. They might come sometime this century.

Finally after what seemed like and hours, but in actuality had only been about 25 minutes, the tow truck had arrived. A rosy cheecked gentlemen hopped out from the front of the truck and jogged in Kate's direction. However, before he made his way completely over, he skittered across a patch of ice and fell landing rather roughly on his backside right in front of Kate. Looking upwards he could see her smiling face. Kate quickly bent downwards to lend the tow truck man a hand. As their hands met, a slight flutter ran through Kate.

Kate (smiling): Are you alright?

Tow truck man: Yeh, I guess so. Hell of an entrance though, wouldn't ya say!

Kate: Well that is the first time I knocked someone off their feet that fast......

By this point, he had risen from the snow and was brushing off the excess. He lifted his hand up and greeted Kate properly. "Hello, my name is...............

…………my name is Andrew, Andrew Park. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kate. I have heard a lot about you and your incredible staff.

Kate: Thanks. Are you feeling o.k. after your fall?

Andrew: Well I probably managed to bruise my ego and my butt, in that order! Let’s get your vehicle on the flatbed and you in the front cab where it isn’t so chilly.

As Andrew loaded Kate’s car onto the tow truck, Kate hopped into the front. Well I did want some excitement in my life; tis the season after all. Andrew finished with the car and climbed into the front of the tow truck next to Kate. She looked over and couldn’t help but smile. He had rosy cheeks, a pile of snow on his head, and a smile that extended from ear to ear. Later after putting the car securely in the driveway, Kate invited her guest in for some hot chocolate. With two steaming mugs, Kate and Andrew sat comfortably around the kitchen table exchanging stories and background information. As early morning approached, the snow continued to fall without signs of abatement. Though Andrew would have liked nothing better than to spend his day in the company of Kate, he had to return to work. He was certain that this snowstorm would create havoc with motorists. With a farewell wave, Andrew headed back out into his truck. Inside Kate stood staring out the window. Fate had introduced her to a remarkably kind and gentle man. Could this turn into something more than a simple friendship? Will my wish come true? Meanwhile, Andrew sat in his truck wondering about his future with Kate. “She is the one, I can feel it”, he thought! “But how am I going to make her see that this was meant to be”?

It was Christmas Eve and all through the division excitement was brewing. Raina and Nate were dancing around in merriment and even Jinny was looking forward to speding holiday time with her new family.

Magda: Sweep Raina off her feet, Nate!

Nate: I think that the crowd wants to see our good moves.

Raina: You lead and I will follow.

Hoots and hollers could be heard down to the next floor! However, the really fun surprise was just coming up the elevator. As the doors swung open, someone yelled Ho...Ho...Ho.

Jinny: Who invited the Santa?

Stacey: Not me but I think he is cute:)

Hearing all of the commotion outside, Kate stepped out of her office. As she did so, Santa whirled around and deposited one fine kiss on her lips.

Santa: Happy Holidays, Kate. I hear that you have been a very good girl this year.

Kate (completely stunned): How would you know? Who are you?

Santa: Don't recognize me with my beard on?

Kate: Noooooooo, but any man who runs into a police office dressed in a Santa suit during the holiday season, may get more than he bargained for.

With a twinkle in his eye, Andrew pulled down the Santa beard so that Kate would see who it was. With utter surprise, Kate began to smile. This was definately the start of a fun relationship.

Kate: Well Santa are you sure that you heard correctly?

Andrew: Hmmmm

Kate: I can be naughty and nice!

As this exchange was playing out, the inspectors looked on with mild wonderment. It was wonderful to see their captain so full of life and truly enjoying herself.

As Kate grabbed her belongings, Andrew went to change into something more fashionable for the evening's adventure. As Kate emerged from her office, Andrew grabbed her hand and the couple proceeded out of the division. Once outside, Andrew pulled Kate into a passionate kiss.

Andrew: Hmmm that was nice. Now do you want to see what surprise I have in store for you?

Kate: Some more of what I just got?

Andrew: Well that is defiantely on the agenda but first..........

As Andrew drove, Kate began wondering where the two were headed. "I can't believe that I just left work like that", Kate thought. Lost in her own world, Kate didn't realize that the car had pulled to a halt. Trying to catch a glimpse as to where she was proved to be futile. The windows were completely fogged and the sun had already set.

Andrew (opening Kate's door): Are you ready?

Kate: Ready as I will ever be!

Once outside, Kate realized that the temperature had dropped significantly. Brrrrrrr!

Andrew: Make sure that you bundle up. It's going to be cold where we are going.

Kate: Do I get even a hint now?

Andrew: Nope!

As Andrew led the way, Kate could see in the distance some twinkling lights. As the couple drew nearer, Kate let out a cry of surprise..........

As the couple drew closer, Kate looked on wonderment. The outdoor skating rink was completely decorated with twinkling lights and music softly played in the background.

Kate: Did you arrange all of this?

Andreww: Are you surprised?

Kate (grinning): Yes, but I haven't skated since I was a young girl. I don't even own any skates.

Andrew: Hold that thought for one minute!

Andrew went over to the deserted outdoor skate rental booth. From behind the counter, he lifted out 2 new pairs of shiny skates, that he had hidden earlier. Sauntering back over to Kate, he presented her with the gift.

Kate: How in the world did you know my shoe size?

Andrew: Do you think that you are the only detective here? Remeber you run an entire squad room full of detectives who are more than willing to share very important information like shoe size.

Kate (laughing) O.K. so which one squeled, Raina perhaps?

Andrew: Why do you immediately assume that she is the culprit all the time?

Kate: Well, let's just say that she is the one who sticks mostly out in my mind!

Andrew: Enough stalling, time to lace up and get out onto the ice.

Kate: I can't skate after all these years!

Andrew: It's like riding a bicycle, you never really forget. Hehe.....

With shaky legs, Kate entered out onto the slippery ice. She carefully linked arms with Andrew and the couple carefully gliding out into the center of the ice. Out in the cold, under the stars, Kate felt magic in the air. All of a sudden, Andrew lost his footing. With a loud thud, his butt connected with the ice. Kate couldn't stop the smile from forming on her face.

Andrew: Well Kate, I guess I have fallen for you twice now! Do you remember the first time?

How could she forget! She had been trapped in the snow waiting for a tow truck. Her vehichle got towed, thanks to Andrew and she found herself falling in love. Could this really be happening, she wondered?

The holidays seemed to pass by quickly…………

It was a Friday and Andrew popped into the division. He immediately ran into Jinny.

Jinny: Hey Andrew, looking for the cap?
Andrew: Actually, I was hopping to run into you.
Jinny: Me, what can I help you with?
Andrew (looking a bit nervous): I would prefer to talk about this someplace else. Do you think that you can meet me at Molly Maguire’s tonight, say about 7 P.M.? It’s important.
Jinny: Umm, sure. Do you want me to bring the Cap?
Andrew: No! I umm would rather not mention this to her. Please Jinny.
Jinny (looking uncertain): Is everything O.K.?
Andrew: Just please come tonight. I’ll explain later on this evening.

With a quick thank you, Andrew proceeded to leave. Meanwhile, Jinny was wondering what the hell that was all about!

Kate: Was that Andrew that I just saw?
Jinny: (not meeting the captain in the eye) I don’t think so.
Kate: (frowning) I’ve been trying to reach him all day long without any success. He hasn’t returned any of my phone messages.
Jinny: I wouldn’t worry about him. He is a big boy!
Kate: I guess your right. I just can’t escape this feeling that he is avoiding me.

Meanwhile, Andrew was having a hard time concentrating on his work. He kept twirling the item in his hand, thinking all the while how his life was going to change from this point forward!!

Andrew sat impatiently waiting for Jinny to arrive. His nervousness was evident in the way he kept checking his watch.

Waiter: Can I get you something?
Andrew: A Whiskey Sour, please.
Waiter: Be right back with that.

As the waiter went off to get the requested drink, Jinny slid into the booth facing Andrew.

Jinny: O.K. So what’s up? I hated lying to Kate this afternoon.
Andrew: I’m sorry I put you in that position but this is really important.

Jinny waited expectantly as the waiter brought back Andrew’s drink. In one big gulp, nearly half the drink was gone.

Jinny: Hey Andrew, ease back a bit on that.
Andrew: (grinning) I don’t plan on getting drunk, I just need to take the edge off.
Jinny: That probably isn’t your best choice.
Andrew: Jinny, I have to show you something.

From inside his pocket, Andrew withdrew……………

What? A gun, a ring, a kleenex? What? Don't leave me in suspense! :D

I know it's a ring!! But, why would he go to Jinny about it??

From inside Andrew's pocket, he withdrew a locket.

Jinny: What is that?
Andrew: The last chapter in my life.
Jinny: Can I open it?
Andrew: Yes, please do.

Carefully, Jinny opened the delicate locket and saw that it contained two pictures inside.

Jinny: Who is this person?
Andrew: She was my fiance who was killed in a car accident.
Jinny: Have you shared this with Kate?
Andrew: No, I haven't. After her death, I thought that I could never love again and then along came Kate. She just blew into my life like a whirlwind and I tried not to look back.
Jinny: So what is different now?
Andrew (reaching inside his pocket for the second time that evening): This time he held up a beautiful ring. I want Kate to marry me but I am afraid to loose her.
Jinny (understanding dawning): If you pull away now, you may loose her anyway. She deserves to know.
Andrew: I love her so much.

Andrew knew what he had to do after talking with Jinny. He didn't want to loose Kate. Pulling out his cell phone, he dialed Kate's number. On the third ring she answered.

Kate: Hello
Andrew: Hey sweetie, how are you?
Kate (a little confused): Do you know what time it is?
Andrew (looking down at his watch): Oh Kate, I'm sorry!
Kate: That's O.K.

After a few minutes of silence, Kate finally broke the tension.

Kate: Andrew, is there something going on that I should know about?
Andrew: Kate, I ummmmmmm...... need to talk with you.
Kate (with a puzzled expression): I can meet you somplace if you want.
Andrew: Yeh, I think that is a good idea. What about the ice skating rink?
Kate: You want me to go over to the rink, now!
Andrew: Please it is important. You will understand when you see me.
Kate (muttering): Alright, I'll get dressed now and head over. This had better be worth getting me out of bed at 1:00 in the morning!

Andrew breathed a little easier now. He would meet with Kate and explain everything to her. Hopefully, she will understand. Meanwhile, Kate pulled out of her driveway and headed in the direction of the ice rink. Suddenly, Kate cried out!

Kate slammed on the breaks to avoid hitting the deer that had just run out in front of her car. "That was close", Kate muttered. She continued on to the ice rink. As Kate neared she saw that Andrew's jeep was already parked. "I wonder what this is all about", Kate thought. "Only one way to find out!" Kate got out of the car and went in search of Andrew.

As Kate rounded the corner of the building, she ran into Andrew. With an hmmm she looked up into his eyes and saw and intense look of passion and something else that she couldn't quit put her finger onto.

Kate: Andrew
Andrew: Kate are you O.K.?
Kate: Fine, but I would really like to know why I am out here at such an ugly hour of the morning.
Andrew: Let's go inside the building, out of the cold

Once inside, the soft glow from the fireplace melted Kate's sour mood. Kate reached over and took Andrew's hands in hers and look deeply into his hazel eyes.

Kate: Please tell me what is wrong. You went to all this trouble to pull me out of bed.
Andrew: Let's sit down and I will tell you everything! Let me start at th.e beginning. When I met you the night of the snow storm, it was like a miracle had been deposited right in front of me. You were firery and beautiful all at the same time. The more I got to know you, the more I wanted to be with you every minute of the day. But those powerful feelings scare me Kate. I only loved someone once.........

Kate (drawing in a breathe): Who?

ok i've tried to wait nicely, but, every time I come back and read this i think at the end, " yo mama" like thats who he's talking about.
So please tell me and Kate WHO?????????????

Andrew lifted his fingers to gently caress Kate’s cheek. She turned inwardly towards his touch and for a moment forgot all of the worries that had been plaguing her mind. Soon, the moment was over and she lifted her face expectantly. Andrew drew in a deep breathe and found the courage to begin.

Andrew (taking out the locket): This was a part of my life long before I met you.
Kate (opening the locket to see two pictures inside): Who are these people?
Andrew: That was my fiancé and our son.
Kate (stunned): You have a family and neglected to tell me about it till now? How could you?
Andrew: I had a family, Kate. They aren’t apart of my life anymore.
Kate: I don’t understand!
Andrew: This was my family about 5 years ago. The woman, Laura, was my fiancé and that was our son, Cody.
