View Full Version : Prince fans R gonna B excited 2 learn about this
vashti1999 05-28-2004, 09:04 PM News I've been waiting for since I've had my dvd player, finally confirmed by USA Today:
Prince is about to get his due on DVD. In addition to a 20th-anniversary two-disc special edition of Purple Rain, Warner Home Video on Aug. 24 is releasing Graffiti Bridge and Under the Cherry Moon on DVD for the first time.
The new version of Purple Rain ($26.99) has a widescreen digital transfer of the film and remixed Dolby Digital surround sound. New extras include featurettes on the Oscar-winning music and eight music videos.
"We wanted to bring (the treatment of the film on DVD) up to today's standards," says Warner's Mike Radiloff.
Prince's directorial debut, Under the Cherry Moon (1986), which co-starred Kristin Scott Thomas, and the sequel to Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge, will be one-disc releases ($19.97). Each will have widescreen video and Dolby Digital surround sound.
Being the Prince fanatic I am, of course I'll be getting all three. I'm looking forward to the bonus stuff on the Purple Rain disc, as well as the movie Under The Cherry Moon. It may not be a critics favorite but I always felt it had its charm.

I'm not sure what they could be, unless they count the Time and Appolonia 6 performances in the movie as separate videos. There was a live, 20 minute concert performance of I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star I remember from Friday Night Videos, not sure if they'd include that.
Here are the videos offically released from Purple Rain.
"When Doves Cry"
"Let's Go Crazy"
"I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star" (live)
"Take Me With U" (live)
It would be great if the DVD would show Prince's 8/83 1st Avenue concert, when he debuted a number of songs from Purple Rain, three of those songs live prefromances from that show, were used on the album. I have the concert on tape, it would be great to have it on DVD, and with top quality picture.
dandelion wine 05-28-2004, 11:25 PM It's about time Purple Rain was given the proper treatment - great news about Under the Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge, as well. :cheer:
I'll be in line to get 'em.
I wonder if "Under the Cherry Moon" and "Graffiti Bridge" DVDs will have the theater trailers. I remember Graffiti Bridge trailer was awsome. Also would like to see "Thieves in the Temple" music video as a Graffiti Bridge DVD extra.
Great subject line, Vashti
And I'm totally there!

I guess I could have thought of that myself, but I can't take credit for the subject line, I actually lifted that from the site where I got the news on the releases.

well, the TITT video (as well as Round And Round by Tevin Campbell) was exactly the same as it was presented in the movie.
I don't think the "Theves in the Temple" video was taken directly from the movies. I don't remember the movie that well. But in the "TITT" video Prince is wearing a mask throughout the video dancing.

You must be thinking of some other video. Prince doesn't wear a mask at all in the Thieves In The Temple video. For that song, there's a short video for the single, and there's also an 8 minute video for the extended version. There are parts of the video that do appear in the Graffiti Bridge movie, but once again, Prince doesn't wear a mask.

vashti1999 06-02-2004, 09:11 AM These are the eight music videos included on the Purple Rain special edition dvd:
Let's Go Crazy, Take Me With U, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star, and Purple Rain from Prince & The Revolution.
Jungle Love and The Bird from The Time.
Sex Shooter from Apollonia 6.

I never knew The Question Of U had a single. Is there any real point of putting the R&R and Thieves videos as bonuses on the GB DVD when the videos were extracted from the film itself?

I know the video version of Round & Round is a bit longer than what appears in the movie. Hopefully they'll include the complete 8 minute version of the Thieves video, that would make it worth it.

I think I was in 5th or 6th grade when Round And Round was popular... and I was practically the only person in my class who owned up to liking Prince. And I remember a few classmates when trying to bash Prince were all "did you see that Tevin Campbell video? he burned Prince!!!!". Yet the idiots failed to realize the song was written by Prince and that what they saw was mostly in Prince's own movie.
Oh well, Prince has the comeback of 2004... what exactly has Tevin done since the George Michael-esque incident with a cop several years ago? lol

Not much unfortunately. Only thing that's been out since the incident is a best-of collection. Funny thing though is that after that incident, I bought the cds from Tevin I didn't already have. I'd already had his first two, so I went and got the third and fourth cds he released, I just wanted to support him. Similarly, that's partly why I bought George Michael's latest cd, but above anything else in both cases I was already a fan of theirs.

No word on that. I've got that Brazilian disc, it isn't half bad at all. It has a nice menu screen, and a Prince photo gallery. The concert film itself is dark, but for something unofficial, it'll hold me over nicely till the real thing comes along.
Jrnygrl 06-05-2004, 08:13 PM USA Network will be airing "Purple Rain," at 1:00 am tonight.
vashti1999 07-27-2004, 06:49 PM July 27, 1984 - The movie Purple Rain made its debut in 917 theaters across the US. The surprise hit of the summer, it ended up as that year's 10th highest grossing film, taking in approximately $70 million (what some movies these days make in a weekend).
Four weeks from today, on August 24, Warner Bros. will release the long-awaited two disc 20th Anniversary Special Edition dvd of Purple Rain. Do yourself a favor, buy it and experience genius.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought they should have released it in July, not August, not even realizing that the anniversary is on the usual dvd release day (Tuesday), it would have been perfect.

There comes a moment in the life of every major popular artist when the stars align and, for what usually amounts to one brief, shining moment, they and their audience become one. The zeitgeist is captured, and forever onward, they, their work and our memories are fused together forever. For the Beatles it was arguably their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. For Michael Jackson, it was when he first moonwalked on the Motown 50th Anniversary Show. And for Prince, it was Purple Rain.
Prince stars as The Kid, and he is funky. Jamming with his band The Revolution every night at the local First Avenue Club in Minneapolis, The Kid has big dreams and an even bigger ego. But when his abusive homelife threatens to crash the party, and the new girl in town takes a liking to both him and his musical rival (Morris Day), The Kid will have to make a choice. Can he find redemption in music, or will he self-destruct?
Purple Rain adheres to the tradition of every great (or usually putrid) rock movie, which is to blur the line between artist and character and leave it up to us to separate fact from fiction. It will come as no surprise to learn that the relationship of Prince himself and his real-life father is not that far off what we see in the film. And as we learn on the included supplements, the tensions between The Kid and his band were also the same problems that plagued The Revolution. So Purple Rain, however silly it may be, does achieve genuine resonance, because when we see Prince/The Kid up there belting out those ten songs, every one now a classic, we truly believe that if he hadn't, he would have exploded.
Unfortunately, Purple Rain is also an ugly film. It offers more than just casual misogyny, but downright hatred of women. Such "comic" scenes as Day, after being confronted by a date he blew off then throwing her into a dumpster, are cringe-inducing. And one wonders what was going through the mind of the screenwriters when they conceived of Apollonia. (To the credit of Apollonia Kotero, who in fact was married at the time and not sleeping with Prince, she has publicly stated ever since how far removed from the character she was playing despite the name.) Only the most clueless male fantasy could think that this poor girl, despite being repeatedly humiliated, slapped and berated by The Kid, would continue to purr over him like a cat in heat. And the conclusion is the worst kind of MTV pop psychology. Apparently, as long as you sing a song as admittedly stunning as "Purple Rain," all is forgiven. Ah, the power of music to cure domestic violence!
But it is the music that makes Purple Rain still worth revisiting. It was the zenith of Prince's career, when he was at his peak as a commercial artist. Mixing funk, rock, pop, new wave, soul and gospel, he blazed a trail not only for African-American artists, but modern American music. The riffs, the melodies, the lyrics - all seem effortless and fit together like some cosmic jigsaw puzzle, as if Prince was just channeling some sort of higher musical power that said "if you build it, they will come." It is hard to define that elusive thing called magic, but in 1984 Prince had it in spades. The musical sequences in Purple Rain are still blistering, and even if director Albert Magnoli shoots the whole thing like one long music video, the concert footage is ranks as some of the best ever seen in a motion picture. So crank it up, raise your lighter and sing along. Prince reigns in Purple Rain.
Video: How Does The Disc Look?
At last making its widescreen debut on home video, Warner has put together another nice new remaster. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, this one easily trumps the previous, artifact-laden full frame release from 1997. While the print is not significantly better, there far less grain and noise, with more vibrant, clean colors that don't smear despite all the deep purples, blues and reds. Contrast is also pretty good, although the film can look a tad dark at times. Detail is also impressive, with fairly good depth to the image for a film of this vintage, and edge enhancement is not a problem. Also greatly improved is the compression, with none of the horrible blockiness that marred the previous release. Purple Rain looks pretty darn good.
Audio: How Does The Disc Sound?
We know it is all about the music, and Warner has given us a pretty good Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track. Truth be told, the music still sounds like it is in stereo and is comparable to recently soundtrack CD remaster. But that is not a bad thing, because personally, I think most pseudo-5.1 music remasters sound cheesy. In this case, the music is front and center, with only crowd noise and various sound effects being directed to the back speakers. Also, I only noticed a couple of instances of truly discrete rear effects. Otherwise, frequency response is quite good although not excellent, and dialogue is fairly clear, although high end sounds a little clipped. Also, the .1 LFE is pretty powerful on the music, but otherwise somewhat flat. Not an amazing sonic experience, but good enough to deliver where it counts, which is the music.
Also included is a French mono dub, plus English and French subtitles and English Closed Captions.
Supplements: What Goodies Are There?
First the bad news: Prince was not involved in the making of this DVD. Why? Who knows when it comes to His Mysterious Purpleness. Perhaps he is still pissed at Warner over the whole "Slave" thing? Or he wanted to much money? In any case, the omission is not as detrimental as I had expected. In a weird way, his absence makes him even more of an enigma, as if those assembled are dissecting, Citizen Kane-style, not a man but a legend. So all of the extras assembled are still pretty darn fun.
First up on disc one of this two-disc, 20th Anniversary Edition is a new screen-specific audio commentary by director Albert Magnoli, producer Robert Cavallo and cinematographer Donald Thorin. I felt it might be the weakest extra on the set. Surprisingly for a track with three participants, it is full of dead patches and short bursts of info followed by dull meandering. For some reason, the trio decided to focus almost exclusively on tech details (how cold it was, where this scene was shot, etc.) and not the stuff we really want to know, i.e., Prince. I can't imagine anyone but the most diehard fans making it all the way through this one.
Also on disc one are theatrical trailers for all three of Prince's motion picture epics: Purple Rain, the dreadful Under the Cherry Moon, and the even more dreadful Graffiti Bridge. (Hey, where's a DVD release of Sign O' the Times!?) And note the Purple Rain trailer: it has a surprisingly amount of footage not seen in the movie, but alas there are no deleted scenes on this DVD. Bummer.
The meat of the extras is on disc two, led by three new featurettes. The most straightforward is Purple Rain: Backstage Pass, which runs 26 minutes. Given the absence of Prince (as well as Apollonia and Morris Day, who also both declined to participate), this is surprisingly good, with most of the key Revolution members giving us the juicy stuff (Wendy & Lisa, Bobby Z., Dr. Fink and The Time's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis), plus Magnoli, Cavallo, Prince's tour crew members Alan Leeds and Craig Rice, and actress Jill Jones. The making of the movie takes a backseat
Also interesting is the 12-minute First Avenue: The Road to Pop Royalty, which gives some good background on the club the movie made famous, as well as how a hip joint Prince used to jam in suddenly became a tourist attraction after the flick hit big. Also on hand to deliver insight are fellow musicians Chris Osgood, Chan Poling and Macy Gray, DJs Mike Bosley, Walter Banks and Cowboy, and rock writers Neal Karlan, Jim Walsh and Kurt Loder. Good stuff. And the most celebratory of the three is the 10-minute Riffs, Ruffles and a Revolution: The Impact and Influence of Purple Rain. This one is just fun nostalgia, VH-1 style. Yes, people used to really were clothes like that, and thought it was cool. But more than a fashion victim, Purple Rain truly did impact pop culture in a major way. I just can't believe it was twenty years ago. Sigh.
Rounding out the extras is 13 minutes of MTV Premiere Party footage, which is hilarious (Mark Goodman...love the hair!), plus a collection of eight music videos, including five from Prince ("Let's Go Crazy," "Take Me With U (Live)," "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star," "Purple Rain"), two from The Time ("Jungle Love," "The Bird") and the jaw-dropping, extended version of Apollonia 6's "Sex Shooter. A must-see!
DVD-ROM Exclusives: What do you get when you pop the disc in your PC?
There are no ROM extras included.
Parting Thoughts
Has it really been twenty years since Purple Rain? Yes, it has. So put on some blue eyeliner and crimp the hair, because Prince is back in town. While the lack of His Royal Badness on the supplements is a disappointment, the extras are still fun, and it is a kick to see this flick at last in widescreen. So this one is well worth an upgrade or a new purchase if you are a fan.
vashti1999 08-17-2004, 12:23 PM "His Name is Prince and he is funky. Two pics hit sour notes, but Warner's DVD's prove that Purple Still Reigns." by Dalton Ross
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called Prince- a man with three feature films being released on DVD. The most notable, of course, is a new two-disc special edition of Purple Rain, showcasing the performer at the height of his creative and commercial success. The story may be somewhat threadbare (yet still fresh enough for Eminem to rip off liberally in 8 mile), and the makeup and wardrobe selections a bit on the ridiculous side (what's with all the ruffles?), but the performances are nothing short of magical. (C'mon, tell me you don't get all choked up at the end of "The Beautiful Ones.") And Morris Day provides the perfect comedic foil for The Kid. As far as the extras go, they're as good as one could expect without the direct involvement of His Purpleness; Revolution band members share memories, Eddie Murphy struts around half naked at the 1984 MTV premiere party, and we learn from director Albert Magnoli that "When Doves Cry" was actually a last minute addition to the film. (Hey, nice save, Magnoli!)
But if Prince never meant to cause us any sorrow and never meant to cause us any pain, why the hell did he dare direct the horrendous sequel Graffiti Bridge? The Kid is still dueling with Day, but you'll be fighting back giggles at this embarrassing and incoherent production. Only slightly les egregious is Prince's foray into romantic slapstick, Under the cherry moon, in which he woos Kristin Scott Thomas in the Mediterranean. Neither has any real extras besides some music videos, and you know what? That's just fine.
Rain: A-
Bridge: D-
Moon: C
There is a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis interview? I love Jimmy and Terry's work, but they have no business being involved with the Purple Rain DVD. Jimmy and Terry were no longer in the Time and associated with Prince when they shot Purple Rain. Purple Rain was shot in the fall of 1983, Jimmy and Terry were fired from the Time in late spring of 1983.
Interview them for Graffitti Bridge DVD, but not for Purple Rain. What insights can they tell us.
And let me tell the DVD file reviewer some facts, that would help understand the movie better and Prince better. Apollonia takes the abuse from the Kid, because the movie is semi autobiographal, and women took it from Prince, because he is Prince. The way normal men treat women, are different from the ways celebirties most noteable rockstars are allowed to treat women.
And Prince was no Ike Turner, what he was quilty of, was not being faithful to his women. He didn't beat up women, like this reviewer suggests.
And Apollonia was far removed from the character she played in the movie, unlike almost everyone else in the cast, because that character was based on another former Prince protege Vanity. Vanity was originally cast to play the female lead, but just shortly before shooting, she had a falling out with Prince and his management team, and dropped out of the film. Apollonia was a 11th hour replacement. From what I know about Prince, Apollonia, and Vanity, the Apollonia character in the movie, was based on Vanity.
I am looking forward to the DVD, especially the interviews with memebers of the Revolution.

As far as Jimmy and Terry goes, even though they weren't a part of Purple Rain, they were still a big part of what was going on in the Minneapolis music scene at that time, so I think they can offer some nice insights. I'm looking forward to everybody and everything in terms of commentaries and featurettes on this dvd. I'm not even upset that Prince didn't take part, being a Prince fan, I'm not surprised. I'm just glad all this bonus stuff is being included and I'm gonna soak it all in, whoever they got to interview and comment is fine with me. This is gonna be the first dvd where I watch and listen to everything.

I don't think the critic was saying Prince beats up women in real life, it seems like he was talking more in the context of the movie itself. The incidents with The Kid tricking Apollonia into jumping into the lake, then later on slapping her, then later on almost forcing himself on her and nearly hitting her again could all be what the critic meant when he said Apollonia's character was humiliated or berated. That stuff can be considered forms of abuse.

Yes, I know but I just want to set the record straight, a lot of things that happened in Purple Rain, never happened in real life.
May I add, as I stated earlier, I am particularly looking forward to interviews with members of the Revolution. I am equally looking forward to the interview with Jill Jones.

Light-skinned black Prince plays this piano playing black dude in France who tries to get with this white chick for her inheritance. The white chick in this movie is also in English Patient movie but I never saw that movie, probably because it was a white movie. She was kind of attractive and sexy for a white girl. The black guy who plays Prince's black friend is black actor Jerome Benton who was also in Purple Rain movie and in the group The Time. The white father of the white chick is played by the same white actor who was in Beverly Hills Cop movie and Rambo: First Blood Part 2 movie. Black Jerome also had a white girlfriend in the movie and she was sexy and cute too. But overall this movie sucked. It wasn't nothing like Purple Rain. Light-skinned black Prince should just stick to makin music and stop trying to play a character. I don't like how they got black males goin to France to get with white women. It was demeaning to blacks. Blacks should just stick with blacks, unless they're playin a game of basketball which blacks would win because the only sports whites are good at is hockey and golf. hahahahahahahahahaha

No, it's a parody. I just embodied that person's way of thinking for a moment. Scary.
I got the DVD today, and it is awsome.
The extras were excellent. Not only do they have all of the music videos from the songs in the movie, they have the original MTV broadcast of the premere. It brought back a lot of memories.
The only thing, they didn't which I wish they had, was the 8/3/83 1st Avenue concert, when Prince preformed a lot of songs from Purple Rain for the first time.

I returned not long ago with all three of the new releases in hand, and spent a couple of hours just checking out the videos and the bouns stuff on the Purple Rain disc. PR is great, I checked out a bit of the MTV premiere footage, which I had never seen before, and watched the whole Backstage Pass segment, which was great. I could have gone on watching more of that segment for another hour if they made it that long. And I got worn out with the I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star concert video, I hadn't seen the full thing in its entirety in over a decade and always loved that performance. The way Prince dances is sooo funny. I wouldn't expect them to include any of the 8/3/83 concert though. You might be better off finding that among Prince bootlegs than on an official WB release. One thing that's obvious is that there were a few deleted scenes that they could have included but didn't, you see some footage in the trailer and videos for Purple Rain that clearly didn't end up in the movie. It would have be nice to see some of that stuff, but other than that, this is a 200% improvement over the first Purple Rain dvd. If anyone ever wanted to get Purple Rain on dvd, this is the one they should buy. I'll still hold on to my old one though, since that was my first ever dvd purchase.
About the Graffiti Bridge dvd, the Thieves In The Temple video is the short version, there's an extended version out there but they didn't include it on this disc. So now, it's time to pressure WB to release a comprehensive Prince music video collection.
I am still holding on to my old Purple Rain DVD also, for whenever I want to watch the movie in Full Screen version.
I have the 9/3/83 concert on tape. For anyone that wants a tape of the concert got to http://www.geocities.com/jandrews2002
They have a lot of Prince bootleg tapes.
I would have liked for them to offically release the concert on video, or as a DVD extra, so I can get an upgrade in picture and sound quality.
Did you know that the preformances of "I Would Die 4 U", "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain" from that show, were used on the album and movie?
Also, in this concert he preforms "Electric Intercourse", it is a great song, which he never released. And even without the obvious historic reasons. "Electric Intercourse" is enough of a great song on its own, you have to get a bootleg tape or CD of the concert. It is that good of a song in my opinion.

In my short experience with DDD (two orders) with free shipping, the item always arrives a full week after they say they shipped it. In both cases, I got an email saying that it shipped on a Friday, and I received the item the following Friday. Whenever you do get your dvd, you'll enjoy it. I haven't even checked out the movie/commentary on disc one yet because all the bonus features on disc two were so good to see.

In my short experience with DDD (two orders) with free shipping, the item always arrives a full week after they say they shipped it. In both cases, I got an email saying that it shipped on a Friday, and I received the item the following Friday. Whenever you do get your dvd, you'll enjoy it. of 4 orders I've received from them, only one took longer than 3 working days. I think it'll come tomorrow.

yep. I'm not too far from the headquarters so that might be why.
Dean Winchester 09-06-2004, 08:26 PM I have had Purple Rain for over a week and a half, and today I picked up Under The Cherry Moon (I will eventually get Graffiti Bridge)

 Good. UTCM is fun, but even I'll admit you have to be a real Prince fan to get into Graffiti Bridge.
