You've heard it here first -- 227 Season One will be coming to DVD sometime soon. I have passed on the information to our fellow friends at TVShowsonDVD.com and they will post some information about it in the near future. Kudos to Sony Television Home Entertainment/Columbia Tri-Star for remembering this classic!

I couldn't find anything on 227 (Amazon gave me nothing, DVDPlanet didn't have anything and TVShowsOnDVD doesn't even have a page where you can preorder the sets). Does anybody know if the 227 season set will be closed captioned? I need to know, please. :)

Not a great cover, they should have featured the entire cast. It looks like something that I could have slapped together.

And the best part: It's CHEAP. 22 Episodes and the SRP is only $29.95. That means expect to see it at places like Amazon.com, Wal-Mart (boo), and discount sellers everywhere [especially on the internet] for $20-$25, or less.

They should have included the entire cast and not just Marla and Jackee. Besides that, Sandra was more of a supporting character in the first season than she was later on. Besides that, those pictures look like they came from the 3rd season. I think that Marla had curly hair like she did in the last season of The Jeffersons and Jackee's hair was much shorter than it was later on.

IT's perfectly understandable, as some SO members were a little younger during the original reruns, and a lot of our areas have never syndicated the show. Nick at Nite only ran a few episodes of the show a couple of times, and TV One is in a VERY limited area (I've only had it in hotel stays in Louisville KY, myself)

Go and make me feel old, why don't you? :( Anyway, yeah it was a decent show. Jackee Harry really had a fun character to play. She won an Emmy for it once if I remember correctly.

Heck, I'm only 32 and alot of people on here make me feel old.
I remember watching this when it first aired and it was one of the first shows to be broadcast "In Stereo...Where Available". I remember those banners on the front end of several shows in the mid to late 1980's. It was a big thing back then. NBC had a great lineup back then with 227, ALF, Golden Girls, and Amen.
I guess I am lucky in that I live in Louisville, Ky and have been taping it off of TVOne and have most of the episodes already. TVOne is great as they don't edit their shows, each one runs 24 minutes without commercials.
I figure this will change soon, so that's why I'm taping them now along with Good Times Seasons 3 through 6. I remember TVLand started out this way and soon changed to edited versions of shows
I'm surprised that many people don't receive TVOne, Louisville has a metro population of close to 1 million people, but that's not really that big. I will definately buy 227 on dvd though because videotapes do wear out. I know, because thats how I lost most of my Jeffersons that I taped back in the mid to late 1980's. The tapes just literally died out, mostly the audio. 227 was a great show, my favorite seasons were 2 and 3, but season 5 wasn't that great to me because Jackee Harry was only in 7 episodes for that season and she was a huge part of the show for me.

227: THE FIRST SEASON

Popular ‘80s Comedy Starring Marla Gibbs, Jackée Harry, and Regina King
Premieres on DVD in a Special Three-Disc Set September 28

Culver City, CA (July 20, 2004) – The Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award-nominated show, 227, starring Marla Gibbs (“The Jeffersons”), Regina King (Jerry Maguire, Daddy Day Care) and Jackée Harry (You Got Served, “Sister, Sister”), debuts on DVD September 28. 227: THE FIRST SEASON will be available in a three-disc set for $29.95 SLP from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

Based on the successful play of the same name, 227 quickly became one of NBC’s top-rated shows when it first aired in 1985. Audiences couldn’t wait to tune in every week to watch Marla Gibbs, who had just starred for a decade on “The Jeffersons.” As Mary Jenkins, apartment building # 227’s most outspoken housewife, she brought the building’s residents together for some juicy neighborhood gossip.

The show’s success was also due in large part to Jackée Harry, whose performance as the Mae West-like wisecracking vixen propelled her to instant stardom and made Harry and her character household names. Both Gibbs and Harry were lauded for their scene-stealing performances with Emmy® and Golden Globe Award® nominations.

The show also launched the career of a young Regina King, who starred as 14-year-old Brenda, a teenager struggling through the pains of adolescence. After the show ended its successful five-year run, King’s big screen career took off with key roles in Jerry Maguire, Daddy Day Care and Legally Blond 2: Red, White & Blond.
Mary (Gibbs) lives at 227 with her husband Lester (Hal Williams) and their daughter Brenda (King). She loves keeping tabs on her neighbors and is a firm believer in speaking out about anything and everything; especially neighbor Sandra Clark (Harry). Along with her confidante and cohort in gossip, Rose Holloway (Alaina Reed), Mary often instigates the famous front stoop get-togethers that anchor the show, suffusing it with a working-class image of strong community and family values.

Episode Summaries:

#101 Pilot
Mary may be faced with eviction when 227's stingy landlord dies, and her nemesis Sandra is in line to inherit the building.

#102 A Daughter is a Precious Thing
When Mary can't solve daughter Brenda's boy problems, Brenda enlists the aid of an expert -- Mary's nemesis, Sandra, their sultry, sexy and "man wise" neighbor.

#103 Young Man with a Job
Young Calvin's unemployment has gotten everyone at "227" so concerned that "always involved" Mary badgers husband Lester into hiring him - but when Lester is forced to fire the awkward teenager, the residents explode.

#104 The Refrigerator
After Mary's refrigerator breaks down, her sly and opportunistic neighbor Sandra readily agrees to use her "influence" on their stingy landlord to get her a new one in exchange for Mary lending her apartment to Sandra for one of her "small gatherings."

#105 Honesty
Mary Jenkins (series star Marla Gibbs), the irrepressible meddler and protector of "227," an aging apartment building, gives honesty a beating after she backs into a neighbor's parked car and then calls upon her "man wise" nemesis Sandra (Jackée) to use her feminine wiles to calm the handsome man's anger.

Mary's problems are further fueled when the unwitting owner's car is destroyed by a hit and run driver, leaving Mary's apology note the only recognizable feature on the expensive vehicle. This forces her to reluctantly press her luck by asking the crafty Sandra to lure the man's attentions away from pressing charges of his own.

#106 Mary’s Brother
Mary fires Cupid's arrow at her brother Lewis and best friend Rose, but she misses the mark when Lewis sets his own sights on resident vamp Sandra.

#107 Family Hero
Brenda's genealogy assignment triggers a war between her mother Mary and neighbor Sandra over famous ancestors but Mary's pride soon goes AWOL when she learns her family tree has root rot.

#108 Do You Love Me?

#109 Brenda’s Last Date
Everyone's abuzz when the "birds and the bees" invade "227," but Brenda and Calvin may wind up getting stung when Mary discovers their secret rendezvous.

#110 Letter to the President
Mary's friends head for the highway after she implicates them in an angry letter to the President about a street pothole but they make a quick U turn when they discover the President himself is coming to fill in the hole.

Film and television star Leslie Nielsen stars as investigating Secret Service agent, Bob Gamble.

#111 The Sidewalk Sale
Mary gets caught up in the fervor of a sidewalk sale to help new landlady Rose make some much needed building repairs and sells off Lester's favorite lamp unaware that he's stashed the sale's proceeds in it.

#114 The Big Piano Playoff
When Mary buys a piano, Rose peddles her teaching services to both her and Sandra and the two pupils' rivalry inspires a competitive recital to determine who's learned more in three weeks.

#115 Mary’s Christmas
When their church loses its lease, Mary coaxes an already overburdened Lester into supervising its move to a new location but the parishioners are left without a place to worship on Christmas Day when the building mysteriously disappears

#119 Redecorating Blues

#120 Slam Dunked
Mary and Brenda cry foul when Sandra hooks up with a pro basketball player whose arrogant moves and behind the back "passes" rub off on impressionable Calvin.

#121 Fifty Big Ones
Mary and Lester throw an extravagant bash for her parents' 50th wedding anniversary, only to find that the guests of honor aren't speaking to each other.

Veteran performers Beah Richards and Whitman Mayo guest star as Mary's feuding parents.

#122 Pick Six
Mary gambles her relationship with Rose and Pearl when she belittles their passion for the lottery, but the odds of losing their friendship increase when Sandra spies Mary playing a hunch and buying her own ticket.

God I'd forgotten how much I loved this show. I picked up the set yesterday and it's all starting to come back to me. I haven't seen an ep in years! Totally worth the $22. I'm about 8 episodes in, can't wait to get to the rest. For anyone who isn't a fan of this show, please blind buy this set. It's only $20-$25 bucks, and I think it's well worth it. One of the great shows from NBCs Saturday Night Lineup. Now if only the rest of those great shows would be released, like Empty Nest, Nurses, Amen, etc.

Hopefully this set will sell pretty good and we'll get Season 2 early next year:D

227 is a show I vaguely remember watching sometimes as a kid in the 1980s but I didn't remember much about the show itself. This past weekend I checked the DVD out of the library - I really enjoyed it! It really was a nice, fun show that everyone could enjoy. I liked the strong relationships the characters had. I'm much more familiar with Jackee Harry from her role on Sister, Sister (one of my favorite shows as a teen), but I enjoyed her breakout role on this show as Sandra. Hal Williams (aka Officer Hoppy on Sanford & Son) was a huge plus as the warm, strong and wisecracking husband.

The only drawback is the first disc in the set I checked out is so badly damaged I couldn't watch any of it. I'll see if I can get another set from the library so I can watch the rest.
