View Full Version : Possible Uses For ABC
Steve M. 05-22-2004, 09:24 PM With ABC on the ropes, its ratings stuck in fourth place (behind FOX!), and a massive amount of cancellations at the end of the 2003-04 season, the obvious question remains - what do we do with the network and its affiliates? It's clear that it can't stay on the air much longer at this rate. Here are some suggestions for how to dispense with ABC:
Liquidate it. Sell its stations and and give its affliates to other networks. Have a fire sale.
Turn it into the Homeland Security Channel - give it to the DHS so Tom Ridge can have a soapbox and show off his utterly useless color chart for terror alerts!
Turn it into a home shopping channel - it's the only way ABC can make any money these days.
Make it into a broadcast Disney Channel - use to it show movies Disney bankrolled between 1966 and 1989. Tron, anyone?
Convert it into a BBC-style network - the American Broadcasting Corporation. You wouldn't have to change the initials! Disney can sell it to the government, who can hire people to operate it and produce noncommerical shows. Nah, this will never happen!
Show dead air. It can't be any worse than "It's All Relative!" :p
I'm sorry - ABC canceled "I'm With Her," and this is my only way of getting back at the bastards!
BowWowsBreezy 05-22-2004, 09:27 PM hahaha theyll have more good shows soon...im with her isnt the end of the world
Dean Winchester 05-22-2004, 11:13 PM I am still shocked ABC cancelled I'm With Her and It's All Relative, they were scoring in the 30's in the ratings, right? This same network kept renewing George Lopez for seasons before it finally caught on. What's the difference except that Sandra Bullock was behind The George Lopez Show?
Steve M. 05-22-2004, 11:19 PM I don't know about "It's All Relative," but I have a sneaky suspicion that "I'm With Her" was canceled because it poked fun at Hollywood phoniness and Hollywood bigwigs have no sense of humor - they probably made ABC axe it! Similarly, I think NBC canceled "Whoppi" because of the show's Bush-bashing.

I think Whoopi was cancelled due to low ratings. It was getting ok ratings at best, but was frequently in 3rd or 4th place, which isn't "good". I doubt Bush-bashing had to do it, but that could have turned viewers off.
ABC should just show classic episodes of their soaps in primetime 7 days a week. But sadly that'll never happen. I can dream cant I?
dawsongirl 05-23-2004, 03:43 AM They should fire everyone and let me and some of my TV loving SO buddies run it.

No it was all about ratings.
barwars 05-23-2004, 09:51 AM ABC has the best current comedies, IMO.
But they'll have some competition from CBS this fall.
Will and Grace Fanatic 05-23-2004, 01:40 PM I doubt they will do anything like that to ABC. When back in the early 80's and late 70's NBC was placing 3rd of 3 there was no such idea. And they eventualy did find ratings success again thanks to the Cosby Show.

James"Thunder"Early 05-23-2004, 08:50 PM ABC has always had problems. they have never had an era where they ruled the airwaves. CBS ruled the '70s and NBC ruled the '80s. ABC may be the first network to fall since DUM in the '50s.

Mr. Television 05-23-2004, 09:08 PM ABC was #1 from 1976-1979 and a very strong #2 from 1980-1984. Disney destroyed this network. I don't think they've been this bad since the early 1950's.
Dean Winchester 05-23-2004, 09:15 PM one thing I've noticed about ABC is that they've never been as good as NBC when it comes to throwing a going away celebration for their big shows (well, I was 4 when Happy Days/Three's Company both ended their runs, so I don't remember). I am willing to bet if Roseanne had been an NBC series, they would've given it a Friends/Seinfeld/Cheers style going-away celebration, promoting the end of the series to death. ABC on the other hand, didn't really seem to go out of their way to push it, even tho Roseanne was hands down their biggest post-late 70's series. Home Improvement was almost as big as Roseanne, and once again, when it ended, it didn't seem like ABC really did much hoopla about it.

I know, I was being facetious when I started this thread. So was former ABC regular Bill Maher when he said on his HBO show that they should let a chimpanzee plan ABC's lineup because a chimp "couldn't do any worse than 'Hope and Faith'!" NBC came back from its early-eighties slump, true, but they never had the dubious distinction falling behind a network with only two hours of programming per weeknight and no nightly newscast that had been on the air for less then twenty years. ABC behind Fox? That's like an established baseball team losing the World Series to an expansion club!
At least I didn't tell ABC to rot in hell, like a fellow "I'm With Her" fan did.

Mr. Roper - your reply to this thesis of mine was that, no it was about ratings. Fair enough, but why were the ratings low for, say, "Whoopi?" Maybe because NBC aired it in a weak time slot to make sure no one would watch it! Remember when Jesse Jackson had a syndicated audience-participation talk show during the first Bush administration? The station that aired it in my neck of the woods broadcast it at half past midnight Sunday - that is, early Monday morning!
So I think "Whoppi" was buried in a bad time slot on purpose. And for less serious but equally political reasons, so was "I'm With Her."
factsoflife 05-25-2004, 12:00 AM The Ratings for "Whoopi" were good at first but it and "Happy Family" were trounced once "American Idol" started airing. They got low ratings after that. it was all about ratings.
It's All Relatvie and I'm With Here never had good ratings. Ditto Married To The Kellys. The big shock is ABC canceling "Life With Bonnie" a show that actually had decent ratings. They should have renewed it and maybe moved it to a different night, i could see it doing good on Thursday's now that Friends is gone. or maybe Saturday, nothing good is on saturday.

The reasons ratings were low was because of American Idol. No network is going to purposly kill a show they put on the air. Why would they put it on in the first place then? I never cared for Whoopi. I watched 8 Simple Rules instead but it too got creamed by American Idol. I'm not familiar with Jesse Jackson's show. I don't even remember it so maybe it wasn't even broadcast where I live. Now It's All Relative I did watch and I was hoping it would get renewed but ABC doesn't have very many good timeslots. It did good at first but again it got creamed by American Idol. ABC moved it to Tuesdays and it didn't help. ABC needs a hit show badly so they aren't going to purposly destroy their own shows. Two other shows on ABC that got canceled that I liked was I'm With Her and Karen Sisko and they got canceled too. Again it was ratings. I will tell you one thing I would rather have Whoopi on than all these reality shows. Networks just need to give some shows some time to find an audience.

I think Home Improvement got more of a sendoff than Roseanne did, but by the time Roseanne finshed up, ABC was glad to see her go (she was a major headache to the Network and the behind the scenes turmoil was affecting the quality of the show - remember the final season?)
But you're right, NBC went crazy promoting the finales of Friends And Frasier this year. They really know how to draw a crowd.
I guess ABC was a little rusty at promoting the finale of a long running show. I think Happy Days was thier last long running hit!

I thought Karen Sisco was doing well in the ratings, then ABC cancelled it, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I remembered reading that they did have "sleeper" hit with Karen Sisco.

me too
Just imagine if NBC decided to axe Cheers and Seinfeld just because ratings weren't so hot at first.
Networks are starting to care too much about "right now" then "will this show still have an audience in 5 years?", and it's coming back to bite them in the butt.
Steve M. 05-25-2004, 10:08 PM "Karen Sisco. . . ." ABC mishandled that completely. They put it on Wednesday nights at 10 ET against "Law and Order," somehow failing to realize that anything that went up against that would be quickly pureed! So ABC pulled it, then they announced it was being retooled and would return in the spring. Lies - on both counts! ABC had no intention of bringing it back. It was critically acclaimed, it needed to find an audience, and it was left to wither and die.
ABC is in a position not unlike the one NBC was in the early eighties. NBC aired "Hill Street Blues" and "Cheers" to crummy ratings, but Grant Tinker stuck by them, refused to listened to bitchy advertisers, and gave them time to find audineces. They became NBC's biggest hits of the eighties. I was hoping ABC would do that with "I'm With Her," of course, and they should have done the same with "Karen Sisco" and returning shows like "Life With Bonnie." Now, I didn't know Grant Tinker. I didn't work with Grant Tinker. Grant Tinker wasn't a friend of mine. But I know that Robert Iger is no Grant Tinker!
I will credit him for marrying former supermodel Willow Bay, though. He has good taste in women! Sadly, dear Willow doesn't wield the same influence William Paley's wife did; she liked "M*A*S*H" so much that her husband had no choice but to keep it on CBS.

That's not true about nothing beating Law & Order. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's first episode beat Law & Order back in late 2003.

Actually PAX-TV may be the next Dumont before ABC after all other than its prime time, most PAX stations are nothing more than outlets for paid religion & infomercials.
ABC...in this day and age of digital cable, satellite, a the many of cable channels out there, do we really need ABC? Of course all networks have gone through horrible periods such as NBC in the late 70s/early 80s ( think Pink Lady !!! Speak up America !! Games People Play !!) and of couse over time they found success, but that was then. Back in 1980 there were a lot fewer choices out there for TV, even cable back then was nothing more than getting a clearer picture of local TV stations. If you were lucky back then your cable system offered HBO, and there was only one of those.
If I were ABC, I would go...
A. all spanish, no I wouldn't watch it but they are the fastest growing minority right now.
or B. if the Disney folks have no intentions of dumping ABC, then move the Disney Channel over to ABC and convert the current Disney Channel to some sort of news and information channel ( wasn't ABC looking at doing something like this in the past ?)
I know, do we really need another news channel? I agree its a crowed field with FOX news, CNN, and MSNBC but You have to put Peter Jennings somewhere !!!
C. create a more "adult" Disney channel under a different name of course, airing programs with adult language and nudity. Be like another HBO, USA or Showtime since it seems that most of popular shows on TV right now are not exactly family friendly such as CSI, Law & Order SVU, Sporanos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, etc...
BTW, how are their soaps doing against NBC and CBS? I remember when General Hospital was THE soap. Heck, when Luke and Laura got married, it was on the same level as when Lucy had her baby or when JR got shot. It was hard to avoid it. w
My problem with ABC is that they rely almost entirely on bland family sitcoms. The only ABC sitcom that doesn't revolve around a family with children is "Less than Perfect" which is more of an NBC-ish workplace comedy and by far ABC's best show IMO. They need variety and sitcoms with more universal appeal, CBS has domestic shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Two and a Half Men" that are smart and funny.
I feel that ABC may have been too rash in cancelling as many shows as they did considering that most of the new shows will fail as well. By depending so heavilly on reality shows that are cheap, it is like ABC has just given up on being a contender.
Although PAX is carried over local stations, I wouldn't consider it as really being a network, i'd imagine it as more like a station group like the home shopping network, than a real network.
I posted this on another thread, but since we're talking about ABC's programming, I'll drag and drop it here:
One of the first acts of Stephen McPherson, ABC's newly appointed entertainment chief, was to quash the planned Jessica Simpson sitcom Jessica, in which the pop star was to portray a TV newsmagazine interviewer, the New York Times reported today (Monday), citing ABC executives and others connected to the show. Although the adjective "ditzy" is often applied to Simpson's public persona, the Times said that her performance on the show was not the problem. "She was actually the best thing on it," one executive said. "It was a valiant effort, but at the end of the day everyone seemed to think it wasn't the best use of her talent," said another. Instead of the sitcom, ABC now plans to broadcast about eight musical specials featuring Simpson during the next two years, the Times said.
Personally, I don't think axing her show was a good idea. Jessica (like it or not) is pretty popular right now, and I think ABC should have stuck with her sitcom. It might have worked with their new TGIF lineup.

factsoflife 05-26-2004, 12:41 PM i agree that ABC seems to be doing the wrong thing with their schedule, instead of picking up sitcoms that have tested well and could be successful. And they canceled some of their most popular sitcoms in favor of ones that aren't doing so well (Less Tha Perfect). I think this strategy will come back to bite them in the ass. None of the new dramas will do well and ABC will have nothing to air. Since they haven't launched a successful new drama since "Alias" you would think they would concentrate mopre on their comedy blocks Oh well at least we don't have Milloneer 7 times a week.

Look at what they did to "Drew Carey."
factsoflife 05-26-2004, 05:06 PM Actually NYPD Blue is ending next season and they are going to get a big send off. Also ABC did give Roseanne and Home Improvement big send offs, the reason they don't match the hype over Firends and Frasier is simply because FRIENDS and FRAISER always were much bigger shows than either HI or Roseanne. Friends was the # 1 rated sitcom in the WORLD and Fraiser televisions most honored comedy, also at one point a # 1 show. Roseanne and Home Improvement were top ten hits, but NEVER # 1 shows. Comparing them is like comparing Apples and Fig Newtons, they aren't even in the same league.

Home Improvement and Roseanne were both #1 at one point. Roseanne was tied with Cosby Show at #1 in it's first two seasons (some stats place it at #2 in the 88-89 season, and #1 in the 89-90 season, and other stats reverse it) and Home Improvement was the #1 series in the 93-94 season (some stats say #2 tho, it was tied with 60 Minutes much like Roseanne was with Cosby, so it depends on the source, some say #1, some say #2). Roseanne was widely recognized as the show that put ABC back on the map, and was the first sitcom to really challenge Cosby's audience. It didn't fall out of the top 5 until the 7th season. Yes, Roseanne fell off in the last 3 seasons, but the show was massive, and was #1 in the weekly ratings MANY times in the first 2 seasons. The first series to come along and actually rival Cosby in popularity.
Frasier's peak was #3 in 98-99.

Their shows are in the middle of the ratings. The top soaps of 2004 so far have been CBS' The Young & the Restless (#1 since 1987 or 1988) and NBC's Days of Our Lives. The lowest ranking soaps are also on CBS and NBC -- Guiding Light (#8) and Passions (#9).
General Hospital usually places 3rd or 4th (out of 9 soaps), while All My Children and One Life to Live are generally 5th and 6th. I believe I read somewhere that ABC Daytime was one of the few departments in ABC to make a really good profit last year.
factsoflife 05-26-2004, 05:42 PM Actually Days Of Our Live (NBC) and Young and The Resltess (CBS) usually share the number 1 spot. General Hospital is usually # 3. Guiding Light (CBS) and One Life To Live (ABC) is usally 7 or 8, Passions (NBC) is ALWAYS last, # 9 out of 9. All My Children and As The World turns is usually somehwere in the middle 4 or 5 at a high, 6 or 7 at the lowest. Bold and The Beautiful is always floating, sometimes high, sometimes low.Although i've never seen it get higher than number 4. But Young and The Resltess is consistantly getting the highest year-end numbers, it has been for sometime.

Are you talking about the HH numbers or the demos? I was talking about the HH numbers in my previous post, which Y&R is always #1 in (well since the late '80s). B&B was usually #2 in the HH numbers last year until DAYS started beating it earlier this year.
A ratings archive for soaps that goes back a few months is located here http://www.soapoperanetwork.com/boards/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=12 if anyone's interested.

I'm going back to this becuase of what was discusssed in the Oxygen lineup thread.
Actually Roseanne was #1 during the 1988-1989 season then again in the 1992-1993 season. Home Improvement was #1 during the 1993-1994 season. And Mr. Genius, Frasier was NEVER a #1 show, the highest it got to was #3. When NBC put Frasier up against ABC's Home Improvement, HI more than blew Frasier out of the water. I say this being a bigger Frasier fan.
Also at its peak, Roseanne attracted a much higher rating than Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, or Home Improvement.
Roseanne spent most of it's run in the top 10. Neither Seinfeld or Frasier did...
Friends spent its entire run in the top 10, but never peaked as high in the ratings as Roseanne did.
You sure do deserve an award for your vast knowledge of the Nielsen ratings....

First there was Fox, then the WB....now, the newest independant network, The TURTLE CHANNEL!!!
Steve M. 07-13-2005, 07:34 PM Wow, how times have changed. ABC has found new life, while NBC is struggling to stay afloat.
I know. . . maybe we should rename this thread "Possible Uses For NBC."
Let's see what NBC has been doing wrong. . . . Oh, right -everything! No hit sitcoms since 1997 (unless you count "Scrubs," which is questionable), "Friends" and "Frasier" long since gone, only four sitcoms this past season, one of which was a new show that tanked big time ("Father of the Pride"), and "Ed" ditched for dumb dramas that went to one-season wonderland.
This is worse than the bad old days of the Fred Silverman era.
L&OFan4Eva 07-13-2005, 08:32 PM NBC is brain dead IMO. The only shows people watch on that channel that doesn't have the words "Law and Order" in the title is, oh screw it, I can't think of any. I mean, one week Dateline got two million more viewers than Joey, and Joey wasn't a repeat! That's how bad NBC is. Can NBC come back from the dead? Looking at the fall schedule, there's a better chance UPN will become the #3 network than that happening.
