View Full Version : I Love Lucy is hardly on tv anymore!!!
savy333 05-19-2004, 03:22 PM Has anyone else noticed that the days of Lucy marathones, back to back episodes, and primetime tvland spots are long gone? I never see Lucy anywhere but on tvland, and they change the timeslot every two weeks, so I hardly ever know when it is on. And half the nights it is pre-empted for some tv movie or whatever. I am just really concerned that I Love Lucy is losing respect and losing viewers. What is going on? Is the show finally showing its age and people are opting for "fresher" sitcoms?
NostalgiaAce777 05-19-2004, 05:08 PM I don't think it's that at all, otherwise there wouldn't be such a broad market for the items, I just think since the release of the DVD's and most fans having the show on tape, I guess they just figure people will watch it on their own time. Most people have lives nobody sits around and watches TV all day, well most people don't anyways, most people I would assume have jobs or hobbies, and other priorities. I know I do. If I am home, once and a while if there is something good on I will watch TV, if there isn't anything good on I will watch a tape. That isn't very often though. Many of these shows that they have on the air aren't available on DVD or VHS, probably because they aren't as in demand for other shows such as Roseanne and Full House or Wings.
As for Fresher Sitcoms, Friends is on DVD and VHS and I am sure as the demand for their DVD's or merchandise rises in the future, I am sure they as I love Lucy did will slowly slip from regular syndication.
dawsongirl 05-21-2004, 03:18 AM It's been on either Nick or TV Land solid for 10 years. In reality, very few shows last that long. IMO, it needs a rest. Wanna show Lucy? Show TLS or HL. Fresh stuff.
crazyredhead 05-21-2004, 09:49 AM I will kill if they take it off. >:[
MOWERDAN 05-21-2004, 04:16 PM TV Land is just going through a survival mode these days. They have become slaves to the ratings and only the top 5 shows get any respect. They'll take those top shows and just play them to death.
I don't think for one minute that Lucy has lost its viewing fanbase. That show has had awesome syndication ratings for years. Why would the viewing public just suddenly stop finding that show appealing within the last year or so. That doesn't make sense! It's these damn networks struggling for survival in a new world of DVD's, Pay-Per-View, On-Demand, and the Internet! Let's face it, TV in general, has lost alot of viewers. And because classic networks like Nick-At-Nite and TV Land have completely pissed off the Baby Boomer population (as well as countless younger people who love classics too), they are left with a very small fickle viewing audience. They therefore must resort to cheap tactics to get any kind of ratings or they're out!
I, for one, will always love 'I Love Lucy". And I know others surely still do.
crazyredhead 05-21-2004, 04:37 PM The sun'll come out, tomorrow, bet your bottom-dollar that, tomorrowww...

I would have to disagree. Did you know that TBS ran The Andy Griffith Show for about 20 years straight before ending up on TV Land? And TV Land has been airing that show for about five years. If The Andy Griffith Show can air for 25 consecutive years, then I don't why I Love Lucy can't. I Love Lucy is just as much of a classic as The Andy Griffith Show if not more.

I agree on this point here. Her later shows definitely need to be aired.

No offense, but how can you say that the Andy Griffith Show is a classic and I Love Lucy might be more of a classic? Isn't it just common knowledge that I Love Lucy is the end all be all when it comes to classic sitcoms??? I am not some Lucy freak by any means, but I think everyone loves ILL to some degree, but I can't say that about the Andy show. There is just no comparrison to ILL and as far as I'm concerned no other sitcom will ever match Lucy's popularity. I'm not trying to be nasty, but your post bothered me because I would say it is a fact that ILL is the classic sitcom.

I totally agree. I have always felt that I Love Lucy was, is, and will forever be #1 classic television sitcom of All-Time. The show is just too great to not be the #1.
sally mander 05-22-2004, 01:56 PM Isn't I Love Lucy still aired on local TV in a few places? My neighbor just got back from LA and she says that one of their local stations still airs ILL.
If so, of course thats great if you live in Southern California, but not so great if you live in a city where the oldest sitcom they air is Roseanne.
EmoJoe 05-22-2004, 10:56 PM I Love Lucy is hardly on TV Land anymore. :( Maybe Lifetime will pick it up, thats seems like a good place for it.
Kristina 05-27-2004, 08:04 PM Yeah, it needs more time-slots. It seems now Green Acres has taken over TV Land, even though I Love Lucy has been gettin poor treatment for awhile now. Thankfully it airs two times a day on a local station here.
lucyrules 05-28-2004, 04:06 PM It's not that nobody wants to watch it any more. It's those stupid time slots! I miss the I Love Lucy show at night. I wish they'd put it back on. :(Who wants to see all of those 80s sitcoms anyway.
crazyredhead 05-29-2004, 11:35 AM Even though ILL has a bad timeslot, I dun't wun't it to leave TV Land. Because it needs to stay there with the other shows. TVL does specials sometimes, and if ILL is gone, they won't be included.

I agree they show LITB, and TAGs alot too.... but what are you gonna do? At least ILL will be put on to dvd. Thank god. I miss them showing Happy Days too.. I am sure if they didnt play two episodes of each show back to back, that they could fit different shows in. But, thats just my opinion lol.
lucyrules 05-29-2004, 10:25 PM They better keep ILL on or I might start WWIII! How can the best show in the world start to go down the drain? I wish they had a lucy channel!!! Nobody takes away ILL! EVER!!!:nonono:

Well, networks take away shows other people deem "Best Show in the World" all the time, or don't show them at all. So why should I Love Lucy be different or get superior treatment? Be thankful it's been on this long or is still on at all. And it's getting DVDs, more than a lot of other classic shows can say.
It's just a TV show. Hardly worth WWIII.
lucyrules 06-01-2004, 03:25 PM Sheesh!! I'm sorry if the thought that i think ILL is the "best show in the world" bothers you. I just stated my opinion. I'm entitled to my opinion and your entitled to yours!;)

Okay, name one show that could be considered the best show in the world that is not on tv right now? I dare you!

Did I say it bothered me? I don't care what show you think is the best in the world. I'm just saying be lucky your fav show is actually shown at all. Other people's shows aren't.
Why is it that if you're not a rabid ILL fan, you're satan to the people on this board?

Considering that this forums topic is ILL...
Route 66.
I bet you've never even heard of it.
I don't think that would be considered best show in the world as savy333 put it, infact I don't think most "critics" would put that in the top 20 of best shows (but what do they know...they don't even acknowlwdge the brilliance of Lucy's later work).
TVLand will NEVER let it go, but ILL needs to move to another cable network (perhaps lifetime). Considering the audience ILL can bring in TVLand and Nick at Nite have treated this show horribly for the last couple of years.
lucyrules 06-02-2004, 04:15 PM Sorry dawsongirl! I wasn't trying to start anything.

 to your first statement. This board is for fans of the show of all degrees, from people who love it to people who give it an ocassional passing glance. My point was that a lot of people on this board over the years, not just now, are less than tolerant of the latter.
And savy333 didn't say what the critics think is the best show in the world, and in the original post, I believe lucyrules was refering to the show she thinks is the best in the world, not what the critics think.

No need to roll your eyes, just except that I'm right and the world will be all that much better for you
Bad and possibly mean spirited humor aside, your point was anyone who isn't a "rabid ILL fan" on this board is considered “satan" at this board. My point was (with acknowledgement of the broader explanation you gave in the comment I'm quoting above) This particular forum is mostly populated with the "hardcore Lucy fans", and if you've visited any "fan board" outside of this one, you know when you criticize the topic of discussion in what the "fans" consider "unflattering" they will challenge your opinion...and you might not like the way the challenge you. lol
so again...Considering that this forums topic is ILL... ;)

Your right, he/she said...
"Okay, name one show that could be considered the best show in the world that is not on tv right now? I dare you!"
You answered, Route 66
I said, though you and I'm sure MANY others may love the show many critics wouldn't even put it in the top 20 of "best shows"
Take it another step further; I don't think the general public would consider it among the top 20 greats either. That doesn't mean it's not good, that it doesn't belong in syndication along side ILL, nor that there aren't lots of people that would love to see the show on TVLand, Hallmark, Lifetime.... (LOL, I'm obviously joking about Lifetime).
My point was that wasn't necessarily the best response to what savvy33 asked...:)

Nope I haven't, but then again this show is not considered the "best show in the world" by many. Which just supports what I said. Any show that is generally regarded as one of the best shows in the world is on tv. That is why it is sad Lucy is hardly on tv. It is a clear choice for "best tv show ever" but still doesn't get a good timeslot on tv.
lucyrules 06-03-2004, 07:49 PM Yes I agree!;)
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on their fav tv show and we have to respect that.:D

Nowhere in there does it say "who" considers in the best show in the world. So I just made the "who" me. :)

The "who" there is implied...the implied "who" in savvy333's comment is everybody, the general public, the majority...blah, blah, blah
Would you now like to get into the philosophic meaning of the "who" implied in savvy333's statement? :happyface :D

lucyrules 06-07-2004, 08:00 PM The though of him is like puke:! He ruined Lucy's career and she thought nobody loved her anymore!:(
That Other Fan 06-07-2004, 10:19 PM Gary is a touchy topic with Lucy fans? I didn't know that...
Seriously, I've talked with fans about Gary before; check a few pages back and you'll see the topic I created...I think I created the topic, lol. Anyway, alot of the fans don't like him, and I think it has to do with the portrayal of him in various Lucy books. He wasn't as shrewd as Desi (not many were, nor are...), but he loved Lucy and I have a problem with many of the Lucy bios out there, so I don't necessarily believe everything that's written about Gary.
Why do I have problems with many of the Lucy bios? Well that's another long drawn out topic that we don't need to get into.
Anyway, the point of the paragraph above is, I know the "Gary subject" is not a good one for many Lucy fans. :D
lucyrules 06-08-2004, 02:51 PM Hey! You catch on pretty quickly! :happyface
Amber8611 06-08-2004, 03:36 PM I'm probably the minority here, but I like Gary. And yes, I do think he was a better husband than Desi in some ways. Gary didn't cheat on Lucy. Some may argue that we don't know for sure if he did or didn't, but atleast he didn't let it be known if it is true. Desi's public affairs really embarassed Lucy and deeply hurt her. Now I know that certain books really bash Gary (i.e. I Loved Lucy) but that was just one person's opinion. Lucie and Desi Jr. have never said a bad thing about him, and they lived with him for many years. And I understand that Gary did make some bad decisions regarding Lucy's career, but who doesn't make mistakes? Everybody has faults, Lucy, Desi, and Gary included. I just don't understand why everybody hates Gary so much.
crazyredhead 06-08-2004, 07:10 PM I dun't really care if Gary was a better husband or not, lol. Desi is just my man! He rocks my socks. He's the bees knees. :D
crazyredhead 06-08-2004, 07:13 PM And I haven't even read I Loved Lucy, I don't even care about all the faults they did, they've been long gone, no use arguing about the things they did. So I just bash Gary for my own reasons. THE WEASEL!
lucyrules 06-08-2004, 08:15 PM Well if Lucy loved him then I guess he wasn't that bad. Ok if I just keep saying that to myself! Wait Lucy and Gary:love:... It leaves a bad taste in your mouth doesn't it?:spit: Well I know Gary was better to Lucy than Desi in SOME ways but in my eyes Lucy and Desi were supposed to be together 4ever!:happyface
