Well it was that way in season 5 because J.J was an advertising executive. I don't know why theyt were not struggling in season 4 because Florida wasn't working.

Perhaps there was some life insurance money from James' death?
Maybe not a lot since he probably couldn't afford a luxurious policy, but he might have had a small one...
