View Full Version : Movies you think are underrated/overrated
Brian 05-18-2004, 08:49 PM Everybody has their opinions on a movie. Among them is whether they believe a film is overrated and not what it is made out to be by the hype or underrated and not given a lot of credit that it deserves. There are no cut-and-dried or right and wrong answers when it comes to saying a film is over/underrated. It's all a matter of opinion.
I think the most overrated film I've ever seen is Titanic. All I liked were the action sequences and that's it. I remember seeing this for the first time after hearing all the rave reviews and reading all the hype about it. But when I saw the film I was disappointed. I probably would have liked it better if it was shortened a bit, about a little over two hours. And I rememeber that song by Celine Dion that was played every day on the radio ad nauseum. :barf: There are people who will disagree with me on this but to each his own. I prefer James Cameron's other works over this film.
When it comes to underrated movies, one immediately springs to mind. That movie is Valley of the Dolls. It was given a BOMB rating by Leonard Maltin but I thought that was an overstatement after watching the film several times. It's more like a 2 1/2 star movie at most. Possibly Sharon Tate's best movie. I just don't understand why this film has been looked down upon by critics. I thought it was a cool movie.
Another underrated film that I can think of is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I thought that was a great movie! It's my favorite of the Indiana Jones series. I've always preferred this one when I was a kid and I still call it a favorite today.
"28 Days" was horribly overrated. Sorry, I don't see why it was so darn popular when it was released.
I am Him 05-18-2004, 09:45 PM Most underrated movie is Starwars:Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. It was a great sci-fi fantasy film that was miles above other films of that genre.
Most overrated movie is Lord of the Rings:Return of the King. It was long, boring and had endless scenes of characters staring at each other. For a while it looked like Frodo and Pipen were going to kiss.

I remember that. Most everyone I spoke to who has seen it said they were disappointed in it. I thought it was great.
Nighthawk76 05-19-2004, 12:02 AM The Phantom Menace is a good movie, but I much perfer Attack of the Clones.

I agree with that too. It was a good movie.
When you look at Phantom Menace in the big picture of the Star Wars saga, the story does a good job of setting things up.
Mijada 05-19-2004, 10:12 AM I think Fargo was underrated.
webuster 05-19-2004, 11:59 AM Overrated:
I agree, 28 Days Later was overrated- it was an alright movie, but not fantastic
Lord of the Rings, Night of the Living Dead (I just couldn't get into it- it was ok, but I rented it expecting to be blown away by it all), There's Something About Mary, Braveheart.
Underrated: Shock Treatment (it's an underdog because it was marketed as the rocky horror sequel), Stella (not Bette Midler's best- but it's not as bad as the critics said).
I also liked the Phantom Menace, I still haven't watched attack of the clones (saw a bit of it- didn't look too great)- but everyone liked the phantom menace when it came out, then turned on it (I've noticed people doing that with 'The Hours')
EmoJoe 05-19-2004, 10:07 PM I think Cheaper By The Dozen was overrated. I really liked it a lot, dont get me wrong, I just think it is overrated. They made it seem better than it really is. Its good, though! :cow: :winkgrin
Cactus Jack 05-20-2004, 07:47 AM Ive never seen it, but Titanic is very overrated
Underrated : Ferris Bueller's Day Off, its one of the best movies ever if not the best, I think a lot of people love this like me, but there wasnt like a big hype over t
Same goes for UHF

I agree. "UHF" is a funny film.

If you haven't seen it, how can you judge if it was overrated or not?!
Anyways...
I believe "Chicago" was extremely overrated, "Moulin Rouge" which was 10x times better, received half of the respect. Another overrated film (but I actually love) is, "Scarface." Some people act as if it is the greatest movie ever made.
Underrated... "Showgirls." People don't see the wonderful satire of Joe Eszterhas and Paul Verhoeven.
webuster 05-20-2004, 04:54 PM I actually though Moulin Rouge was very overrated as opposed to Chicago- depends on your oppinion I suppose- considered I thought Chicago was just supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Nighthawk76 05-21-2004, 02:40 PM Though a lot of people are going to wonder what is wrong with me I think that Braveheart is WAY overrated. So was Dances With Wolves.

The most overrated film of all time is definately Citizen Kane. Yeah, it's a good movie, but it is soooooo long and soooooo slow and yes, soooooo boring. The greatest film of all time? ohno: I sincerely hope not.

No way. Kane rules.
;)
I was watching a profile of Mike Myers on CNN today and they showed clips from "So I married An Axe Murderer."
It's a shame this film never got much recognition. But I think it's one of his funniest films.

Brian, I guess we think alike! I hated Titanic! And I agree that Temple Of Doom is the best Indiana Jones movie!
Valley Of The Dolls? Well, I have to admit that I kind of like that one! I guess because it takes me back to those days when I was 17 years old!(sentimental value);)

LucyCompanyPhan 05-24-2004, 10:58 PM Overrated: LOTR trilogy. Okay, I'll give you all of the FOTR and the battle scenes of the other 2 but beside that the movies are boring, long and way overrated. Return of the King, some of the acting was unbareable for me. I mean, 20 minutes after the king returned we're still watching the movie. there was like a 10 minute hug scene for the hobbits. come on! And Sam was the most annoying character in the history of annoying characters.
Pretty Women: I like Julia Roberts and all. I just thought this movie was really boring.
Bringing Down the House: Alot of people gave this movie good buzz and the acting wasn't the problem, but the movie got terribly boring. I mean, how long can you watch ghetto lingo being butchered?
The fast and the furious- god i hated this movie.
Monty Python and the holy grail- I like this movie sure, but to be named one of the funniest movies of all time? Sure its goofy and gets alot of laughs, but I don't see how its the funniest movie ever.
Old School: Alot of people told me how great this movie was and I rented it and I was so bored. It was just really really bad. I really like Will Ferrall but this was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I laughed once in the entire movie.
Underrated: Liar Liar. My personal fave movie of all time. I would say its Jim Carrey's funniest movie, but its always in Dumb and Dumbers shadow, but even though i thought Dumb and Dumber was great. Liar Liar was easily was better.
Duck Soup-I perfer this comedu over Monty Python and the holy grail over it any day. Go watch this one day. Just wonderful but its often looked over because it was made back in the 40s.
The Girl Next Door- I thought this movie had alot of heart and it was extremely funny, but others just see it as a teenage sex movie. I thought this was one of the best teen comedies I've ever seen.

That movie is hilarious.
Any film by Robert Altman.
Don't get me wrong, Robert Altman has made some great movies, (The Player being one of them) but every time the guy makes a film, the critics and film writers want you to believe he's the best thing to happen to movies since they invented talking pictures.
Again, a great director, but I just don't understand why he's treated like a God in some circles.
Oh yeah, he directed "Popeye" with Robin Williams. Is that the work of a God?
;)

Hollow 05-25-2004, 11:32 PM overrated- all of them
underrated- none but "metallica: some kind of monster" probably will be :grr:
Jrnygrl 05-30-2004, 06:15 PM underrated: Cable Guy, overrated: Something About Mary..
phoebe7165 05-31-2004, 02:21 AM Overrated--Blair Witch Project. BOOOORRRIING!! When it came out, I heard it was really scary. It wasn't scary. When it was over, I said, 'What was so great about that'?
Underrated--I just love the movie "Election" with Matthew Broderick & Reese Witherspoon.

Agreed.
Jokerette 05-31-2004, 07:00 PM Over-rated
Independence Day
Terminator 1, 2, 3
Star Wars Phantom Menece/Attack of the Clones
Love Actually
Gladiator
The "Scream" movies
E.T
Under-rated
Labyrinth
Ninja Turtles: The Movie
Batman Returns
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Mermaids (the Cher movie)
Adventures In Babysitting
TheLurkerKing 06-10-2004, 03:06 PM All these films made both the critics' "10 Best" and "10 Worst" lists. As a film cannot physically be both the best and the worst at the same time, and as I have seen all these films and enjoyed them, then they must be underrated by the critics who disliked them.
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Moonlight Mile
O Brother, Where Art Thou
Snow Falling on Cedars
Beloved
Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Fisher King
Vampire's Kiss
The Mission
Evita
Return to Oz
And here are some filmmakers whose films I think are often underrated.
Ralph Bakshi
an animator, whose total body of works I think is often underrated by many people.
Roger Corman
for doing so much with so little.
Spike Lee
the more I see his films, the more I enjoy 'em.
George Pal
often forgoten about today, but during the '50's and '60's as producer and/or director made two of the greatest sci-fi films from those decades: "War of the Worlds" and "The Time Machine."
Ken Russell
whose work with both lights and camera is unparalleled. Who can get good performances out of the unlikeliest of actors. And who makes the scenes between Lady Sylvia Marsh (Donohoe) and Kevin (Pitt) a boy scout, in "Lair of the White Worm" work, when by all rights they should not work.
Martin Scorsese
Underrated not by critics, as his films always make the "10 best" lists, but, by audiences, as he has yet to have a really popular success, even though the quality of his total body of work is as high or higher then any director working today.
and Sam Fuller
for all those directors who toiled ceaselessly in Hollywood with litttle or no recognition, and once they were dead received the same amount of recognition--little or none.

I'll agree with that one. I loved Gosford Park, but even I was pretty amazed by how popular it became and how it was nominated as Best Picture... Come on, it's really just a stuffy, British, and yes, somewhat boring murder mystery. Strange. It seems that alot of actors just love him sooo much, that's why he's able to get such great casts (like in Gosford Park and The Player) but that's all I can see. I've heard actors use the term "Altmanesque" and I just wanted to throw up. "Hitchcockian" I can understand, but "Altmanesque" ohno:
Here is one film that has always been dismissed as campy and dumb, but is one of my personal faves:
"Flash Gordon"
The 1980 sci fi adventure with Sam Jones, Max Von Sydow and Timothy Dalton.
I saw it again last week on one of the movie channels, and I forgot how cool this movie is.
Actually, I love this movie!
It's a great space opera with an amazing cast (Brian Blessed is friggin great in this movie!) tons of action, and not to mention a musical score by Queen!
Hell-oo!
Queen!
It's great campy fun!
I want all of you young S.O. members to go out and rent this movie.
So cool.
;)
