View Full Version : 2012 Possible Olympic sites reduced to 5
Brent88 05-18-2004, 09:49 AM New York, London, Paris, Madrid, and Moscow are on the list. The winner will be announced next year. I seriously doubt New York gets it in 2012, since in 2010 it will be in British Columbia.
These are the summer olympics.

Paris is favored BTW, followed by London.
Brian Damage 05-18-2004, 11:06 AM Somehow, I really do think New York will get it. I hope not though, the traffic would be unbearable!

Well, Europe has the next two Olympics(Athens and Italy), so I guess NYC has a chance. I can just imagine traffic though, LOL It's already bad enough.
PZelda 05-18-2004, 11:23 AM Good luck if they hold it in London!

I'm sorry to hear that. I was in Austria last year and Salzburg had a bid on hosting the 2010 games, and they really wanted it. They were doing shameless campaigning, and it's such a pretty city it would have been the perfect place. Too bad :(
Czas na Zywiec 05-18-2004, 02:44 PM Hm.....are we getting a new biggest SO Olympics fan. ;) Don't worry, I'm still as obsessed as ever.

Yea, but Austria's held the Winter Olympics twice before. I wish they'd go to countries where the Olympics haven't been hosted yet. Canada held the Winter Olympis once before, in 1988 in Calgary. Sure, I would have prefered it to be in a different country since Canada's already hosted them, but twice isn't bad. We've never hosted the Olympics before, and the closest bid we have currently is 2016 (We bid in 2006 and 2012, but surprise, surprise, the Olympic committee didn't give us the bid :o)
As for 2012, I hope New York gets it. The other three cities have aready hosted before, Moscow once and Paris and London twice.
FamilyTiesGOP 05-18-2004, 04:23 PM The article says that Europe is the favorite because of the 2008 Summer games in Asia (Beijing) and the 2010 games in Canada.
So it could be viewed as Europe's turn against NY and the 2010 games are being held in Canada, which would also be against NY.
If New York can't have it, I hope London gets it.

I wouldn't even mind Paris (The last time they hosted was in 1924, over 80 years ago, 1900 was their first year, 104 year ago), it's just that they've also hosted the winter Olympics three times, in Chamonix, Grenoble, and Albertville, in 1924, 1968, and 1992, respectively. I'm looking on how many times the country has hosted, not by who lives there. :o

Moscow hosted in 1980, but Russia's infrastructure is too poor to host right now, maybe in the future. And Barcelona had the games in 1992. It's too bad Rio de Janiero didn't advance further - that was my top pick out of the top nine candidates (The games have neevr been held in Brazil, let alone South America.)

spunkygirl 05-18-2004, 06:35 PM I wish they would have them here in Ohio, either Cleveland or Cincinnati. I know we put a bid in for them, but I can't remember what year they said we were going for :(

Brent88 05-18-2004, 09:34 PM Uh... sorry but Europe has the Olympics in 2004 and the Winters in 2006. It would not make sense to give the Winters to Europe again in 2010.

The problem is... the city that hosts has to be able to handle the MASSIVE amount of people and media that come with the Olympics. That includes having hotels for everyone. I'm sorry, but I think Cleveland and Cincinnati fail miserably.

Salzburg has never hosted the Olympics before - when Austria had them it was in Vienna. I don't think it would be fair to have them anywhere in the States again, we just had them in Salt Lake City.
People are saying "Europe shouldn't get them all the time" but Europe is a bunch of countries that all have sepparate chances. I think the US shouldn't get them all the time. Going in a different state is hardly the same thing as going to a different country.

Umm...the last summer games held here were in Atlanta in 1996 (which will have been 16 years ago by the 2012 Summer games) and Salt Lake City in 2002 (which will have been 10 years ago in 2012). So by then we will not have "just had them in Salt Lake City." And the US doesn't "get them all the time." But considering that we are the largest, most economically stable, secure countries on the globe, we should have them more than some small European country. Europe is having the next two anyway summer and winter.

The U.S. doesn't get them all the time. 1998, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010 are just a handful of years where the U.S. doesn't/didn't have the Olympics.
Brian Damage 05-18-2004, 10:56 PM New York could really use the economic punch that the Olympics would bring, however if you polled a majority of New Yorkers, most don't want the games.

Austria never had the Summer Olympics - so that I wouldn't have a problem with. When they hosted the Winter Olympics, Innsbruck was the city that hosted them both times. Vienna's never held the Olympics to my knowledge, unless it was just a game or two when they couldn't do it in Innsbruck for whatever reason.
I agree about the US vs. Europe thing, though. There's a ton of countries in Europe that have never hosted the games that would be great contenders, but it's all up to the Olympic committee, whoever they are. I really wish they did a better job at picking cities. Lisbon, Dublin, Warsaw, Prague, or Budapest would be great places to have the Olympics. Plus, I'm sure Portugal, Ireland, Poland, The Czech Republic, and Hungary could use the extra boost to their economies. Plus, none of those countries have hosted before, so it'd be a nice change of scenery. :)
Is it seems like I'm being pushy or anything, tell me. I'm really not....I'm just really into the games and like to see them being hosted in a wide variety of places. ;)

I agree with you atleast a little. I think some of those cities you mentioned would be nice if the Olympics have to be held in Europe. Especially Dublin, Ireland. I here it is really nice there. But I have a feeling that those cities would run into the same problems of capacity and money that some of the rejects had. Do those cities even want the games there?
The only thing I object to is the notion that America has too many games when we have only had 4 of each in our history. But as I said, out of the current choices I like NY and London.
Is the bid cities list available yet for the 2014 Winter games?
FamilyTiesGOP 05-19-2004, 12:09 AM By the way, Budapest thought about entering the 2012 bidding, but decided not too:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/future-glance.htm
In 2014 it is believed that a South Korean town will try and possible a special co-bid for some place in New York and Quebec.

Well, Budapest, Prague, and Warsaw have the space (Even if they need more room, they could branch out to some towns just outside of those cities, it's been done in the past), it's just the economy that needs a boost. Bit since all three countries have joined the EU, their economies should be getting a kick forward, so by the time 2012 roll around, they'd be ready. Portugal and Ireland definantly have the economy good, they probably haven't expressed too much interest in it. I'm sure they'd love to host, though.
Warsaw and Budapest applied for the 2012 bid, but they didn't finish up the paperwork. Warsaw's bid again for 2016, and now Prague's expressed interest in bidding as well for 2016. Prague and Budapest are gorgeous cites. Warsaw not so much (83% of the city was left in ruins after WWII), but it still has its beautiful parts. It's the biggest city on Poland and really our only chance of getting a bid.
I didn't mean to sound like we've had the Olympics year after year. I really want NYC to get the bid in 2012, I'm just saying 8 is a lot of you compare it to countries that have usually always been represented in the games but have never gotten the chance to host since 1896.

Nothing to really rely on, since different websites, magazine, newspaper articles have said different things. Plus, 2016 is still 12 years from now. They won't decide on winners until 2008 and 2010 (Usually 6 years before the games).
FamilyTiesGOP 05-19-2004, 11:55 AM I think Sarajevo would be fun for 2014 if they can get their country strong again by then.
I also think Chile would be nice for 2016.
Jenya 05-19-2004, 01:02 PM I would like to see the Olympics in other countries rather than Canada and the US. Montréal is still paying for the 1976 Olympic stadium. It's a pile of junk, in my opinion. Poland, and Ukraine should bid for the Olympics. I also think some South American countries should bid for them too. This is supposed to be an international event. I'd like to see the Olympics in a different continent for a change, rather than North America and Western Europe. :)

Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, South Africa, Kenya, etc., would be great hosts for the Olympics. There's so much you can do in the warmer climates, plus they all have close access to water. Hopefully one day in the future, all the continents will have hosted. Beijing is a nice change for 2008. This will be China's first time to hold the games.
Jenya 05-19-2004, 05:41 PM Excellent points, Chris. I just think North America, and Western Europe had plenty of chances for the Olympic games. Give other countries a chance. It's only fair. :)

I think the Montreal Expos should just as soon move. I've read about some people's experiences in that venue and they have said it was really unpleasant. It doesn't help that their ball team is not doing good.
I don't care where the Olympics are held but I really hope it is held so that people in the U.S. can watch them in the Summer and not while they are at school. I was really upset about the 2000 Olympics because it was September here and I missed a lot of the action due to school. It didn't help that I didn't see the US Olympic baseball team win the Gold Medal and it also didn't help that the U.S. team didn't qualify.

FamilyTiesGOP 05-19-2004, 09:08 PM I've read several threads advocating fairness and variety for the venues of the games, which is fine and good, but the issues are more than fairness.
A lot of countries just do not have the capability or money to host the Olympics even if they want too. It is just a fact that North America, Europe, and some countries in Asia are best at hosting the Olympics. They are more capable, financially stable, and secure. The reason given why Rio cannot have the Olympics was because of a major crime problem. It is just more complex than saying what should be fair.

Well, if you look at it this way, 2016 is 12 years away. The IOC makes their decisions six years before the games are held. Look at Beijing. I'm sure China has its fair share of problems to work out, but they have 4 more years to get into shape. They've already known since 2002 that they were going to host. Moscow and Sarajevo were some cities you wouldn't expect to get the bid. Especially Sarajevo. Why would they pick Bosnia and Herzegovina, out of all places, to have the games? I'm sure that with the proper amount of time, a lot can be done to improve for the games. And now that a handful of Central/Eastern European countries have joined the EU, there's a brighter future for all of us who have been waiting for our chance to host the games. :)

Yes, but we're deciding now on when they'll be. We still have just had them, and should let other countries that have never hosted have a chance. And as much as you may like to believe it, we're not the largest, most economically stable, or most secure country on the globe. If you'll do the research, you'd see that there are several small European countries that are much safer than the United States.
It doesn't matter how many times Europe in general gets the Olympics, it's done by country, not continent. The US keeps getting them and there are several countries in Europe, Asia, South America and everywhere in between that would love to host them.

That really isn't true. The Olympic committee does not like to have the Olympics on the same continent consecutive times. It really isn't about all those little European countries. And the countries have GOT TO BID FOR THEM.
And we are still one of the most capable countries in the world to host the games consistantly. And like I said 8 times in 100 years for the most powerful country isn't that much.

Are you comparing all of those very small countries to the US? We supply more athetes and money to the Olympics than most of those countries combined. I think it is perfectly fair for the US to have had them 8 times to a tiny country like Austria's 2.
And it is not a matter of "letting." Everybody bids and one gets chosen. This isn't socialism. Every country in the world and in Europe will not have the Olympics before we will again and that just doesn't make sense to think that is possible.
Please post how many times Hungary, Poland, and Ireland have bid for the games. Not many times...
And you're right...we ARE big and great and all that and much much more!;)
Brent88 05-20-2004, 09:22 AM Liza doesn't understand that many countries she listed CANNOT handle what comes with the Olympics. The security, the athletes, the media. The city(or surrounding area) has to be big enough to handle all this.

That is exactly what I was trying to explain. I mean Havana placed a bid for the 2012 games. Does anybody here think that would be a good idea? And the IOC said the Rio had way too much crime. It simply is not an issue of fairness or equal opportunity. It is capability.

I only listed three countries, just off the top of my head, that hadn't hosted. My point is that there are several in Europe and elsewhere that haven't hosted and are capable.

That may be the case in some, but not all times. Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, etc., are all bigger than some other cities that have hosted, such as St. Louis and Helsinki. When it all comes down to it, they just don't want the Olympics to be held in any of the countries that were behind the Iron Curtain, except for Moscow and Sarajevo (But then again, Moscow was the capital of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia back then, wasn't as sucked into the Soviet sphere as were the other countries behind the Iron Curtain) for whatever ridiculous reasons they have. It's not our fault we were just handed over to the Soviets for 40 years of control. It's a terrible disadvantage, because the countries of the west had since 1945 to rebuild and develop their economies. We've only had that opportunity since 1989.

LOL... no, with relations related to Cuba like they are now, the U.S. (and other countries) probably wouldn't have gone.

Actually most countries do not have as bad of relations with Cuba. It's most valuable source of income is in foreign tourism. The US is one of very few (if not the only one) that doesn't allow its citizens to visit there.

I think you're right. It's definately not fair, and I'd much rather see an Olympics played in an eastern European country rather than the United States again. Oh well
