View Full Version : Trivia
Lolac 05-17-2004, 01:42 PM Here is a bit of trivia for you. In the movie, "Mrs. Doubtfire," the kids are seen watching "The Dick Van Dyke Show" after school. The question is: Which episode were they watching and which scene from that episode was shown?
This is just for fun!

Carrie 05-17-2004, 02:03 PM Episode #128, Coast to Coast Big Mouth when Laura is apologizing to Alan for telling everyone about his bald head. :D

Give that girl a ruby stick pin!
You are correctamundo!
I love that scene. The girl says, "We always watch 'Dick Van Dyke' and Mrs. Doubtfire tells them to go do their homework. I always think those kids have good taste!

hank18 05-17-2004, 03:55 PM This one might be a little harder...
In an episode of the 90s sitcom "Blossom," Blossom's dad interrupts her while watching "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Which episode was SHE watching?

That one is harder! I've never even heard of that show let alone seen it! I'll be interested to see if anyone knows the answer!

:D
Carrie 05-18-2004, 09:04 AM I agree! I've heard of it, but never seen it. I don't know of anywhere that it's on now.
SawgrassSteve 05-18-2004, 09:49 AM I remember Blossom (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101050/), but only watched it occassionally, because someone told me Mayim Bialik, the series' star, was the image of my eldest daughter, although Mayim was quite a bit older.
Sorry, didn't see enough to answer this one!

B&W fan 05-18-2004, 10:44 AM I'm with you there Steve. I've heard of the show, and can even remember the theme song (don't ask me why, I don't know). However, I never watched an episode and certainly am stumped at that good trivia question!
B&W "I imagine there are one or two more shows that have made use of an episode of TDVDS, but I can't think of any right now" fan
Carrie 05-18-2004, 12:32 PM I have another one that I found the other day as soon as someone guesses the Blossom question. ;)
hank18 05-19-2004, 03:25 AM Should I post the answer to the Blossom question so we can move on? Sorry!!
Carrie 05-19-2004, 09:01 AM I'd give it a few more days. Someone else might know the answer.
ScottD 05-19-2004, 06:21 PM I've seen Blossom but never watched it regularly, so I'd never get this one.
hank18 05-21-2004, 04:10 AM Sorry, I didn't mean to crash the party with my question!!
As Blossom tells her father, "It's the one where Laura gets stuck in the bathtub..."
SawgrassSteve 05-21-2004, 09:24 AM Hmmmm,
Hank, would that be episode #121, "Never Bathe On Saturday?"
Here's one:
"He thought he had me that time. Now, he'll just have to do it all over again!"
Steve
(BTW, Hank, thanks for the hint. Whew!)

That's from episode #137 "Body and Sol," after Boom Boom Bailey almost knocks out "Pitter Patter" Petrie.
I love that episode!!

That would be from "Ghost of A. Chantz," one of my favorite episodes. So your name is Gary, huh?

hank18 05-24-2004, 07:00 PM Another question for you: (I hope this one is easier!)
Pop duo Chad & Jeremy played The Redcoats in a memorable DVD episode. Which was their only single to reach number one on a billboard chart?
Larry Surrell 05-24-2004, 07:20 PM I was going to say World Without Love but that was Peter and Gordon, LOL  I'll try for Summer Song, my favorite Chad and Jeremy song.
I watched that episode the other day and noticed they both played Gibson J160E guitars. I just bought one of those a few weeks ago myself. It's a sweet sounding guitar, but I can't play nearly as well as Chad, Jeremy, Peter or Gordon!!
If my guess was correct, here's another easy question (If my answer was incorrect, please correctly answer Hank18's question first).
What DVD episode was God watching in the original "Oh God" movie, and what did he say as he switched off the television?
hank18 05-26-2004, 04:08 PM I think I'm gonna give up trying to ask trivia questions!
The Chad and Jeremy song was "Willow Weep for Me" which was number one on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1965.
Larry in Thousand Oaks, I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm very cuirous!

So what is the answer to your trivia question, Larry? I'm thinking I might have to go rent the movie "Oh, God" to find out!

They never had a single go to Billboard #1. Yesterday's Gone went to #18 and A Summer Song went to #6, but they never had a single go to #1. I have the Billboard Book of #1 Hits, and they aren't in it, though The Beatles and several other British groups were hitting #1 starting in 1964.
Larry Surrell 05-28-2004, 07:09 PM Hank18,
That was surprising; I don't even remember that song! You're right, it looks like people aren't interested in playing trivia right now. Maybe you can try again in a few weeks.
In "Oh God", God (George Burns) was in a hotel room helping John Denver write the answers to questions that a panel of clergy provided as a test to see if he really saw God. An episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show was on the TV in the room. It was
"Farewell to Writing", the part where Rob was dressed in a cowboy hat and fell off a stool while trying to mount it like he was getting on a horse. God looked at the TV and as he's turning it off said, "Too many repeats". BTW, the film was directed by Carl Reiner!
Lolac,
Sorry about the delay, I meant to post a reply 2 days ago and forgot; must have been a senior moment! I'm 46 years old, and last week received a letter from a local supermarket chain about their prescription drug plan. The letter started out "Dear Senior". Now I know I'm no longer a kid, but I didn't think at 46 I was ready for the retirement home yet! Maybe I will have to learn how to play shuffleboard sooner than I thought

Oops! Sorry for speaking prematurely in my previous post. I've never heard of that particular song or that Billboard chart, but I wouldn't mind listening to the song. I have an old single that they recorded of a song that they wrote themselves, but IMO that song was forgettable to me since I can remember neither the song nor its title. My favorite Peter & Gordon songs are "I Go to Pieces", written by Del Shannon and in the Top 40 in 1965, and "Woman", written by "Bernard Webb" (a psuedonym for Paul McCartney, I think) and in the Top 40 in 1966. By the spring of 1966, Jeremy had split from Chad to make movies, I think, and Chad appeared on the last Hullabaloo ep that April w/ someone called Jill. They sang an unusual song called "The Cruel War", which had to do w/ the woman wanting to put on a soldier's uniform in order to remain w/ her love.

Larry, no problem. I understand the "Senior thing." I'm 48 and it freaks me out that in 2 years I will be eligible to join AARP and get those senior citizen discounts my mother-in-law always asks for. AAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGHHHHH! I'm not ready for that! I have a 5 1/2 year old daughter!

Larry,
I do like the trivia game, but when I don't know the answer, I simply don't respond, and a couple of those questions have been pretty tough ones (at least for me)!
Here's one:
"Rob! Would Sally call and tell me that???"

David VP 05-29-2004, 03:05 AM Here's a "stumper" for you Van Dyke faithful. .........
There's an obvious "writing gaffe" in the episode guest-starring Robert Vaughn ("It's A Shame She Married Me"). Can someone tell me what this "gaffe" is?
:)
hank18 05-29-2004, 03:58 PM In response to jehobden's post, the Chad and Jeremy song did actually go to number one on the adult contemporary chart, which is a little different than the regular billboard chart.

Ok, David, I'm going to take a stab at this. Is it when Jim is talking about his trip to Australia and says he will be in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year, then Rob talks about his trip the next month which would put him at Grosinger's in time for Hannukah? Chinese New Year is typically in Feb. and Hannukah is in December.
Or is it when Jim and Rob think they know each other, but it really seems they never met because it takes a minute for Jim to remember Laura Meehan and then asks whatever happened to her?
There were a couple of other minor things, but I've gone blank here. Those were the ones that really stood out in my mind. ]

David VP 05-30-2004, 11:49 PM Hi Lolac (of Twilo). :)
Good to know ya! I just realized this nice Forum existed the other day; and thought I'd sign up to talk about our favorite show from time to time.
Re. my question.........No -- neither one you mentioned is what I had in mind.
My "gaffe" seems fairly obvious (once you realize it's there of course). :)
Here it is (see if you agree with me that this should NEVER have been put into the final cut of the episode) ........
Laura gets a phone call from Sally, when Sally asks Laura what she's going to wear to the Jim Darling party the next night. The gaffe here is that it is SALLY doing the calling here, and not say, Mel, or Jim Darling himself.
Why? Because in the scene just preceding this "Sally Calls Laura" scene we see and hear Rob practically shout right into Sally's face that he is "NOT GONNA TELL HER [Laura] ABOUT IT [The party]!"
Sally, therefore, KNEW that Rob didn't want Laura to know about the party -- so what does she do? -- THAT NIGHT, she calls up and spills the beans directly to Laura over the phone.
That's a writing error that could have easily been avoided, as I eluded, if Carl Reiner had simply made Mel or somebody OTHER than Sally or Buddy make the call, spilling the beans. For example -- Instead of Sally calling (when we KNOW she isn't that dumb or deliberately spiteful re. Rob's feelings in the matter), why not just have Laura answer a call from Mel, informing Rob & Laura that "the time of the party has been changed to XX o'clock"? Makes much more sense, and doesn't taint Sally's character.
David VP 05-30-2004, 11:59 PM How about a blooper that was kept in the "Walnut" episode?
No, NOT that we can SEE Rob's thumbs when we shouldn't be able to.
I'm thinking of a line of dialogue that Rob messes up. :)
In fact, this goof occurs 1 second before the exact image we see in Lolac's signature pic.
Whoever guesses correctly wins a trip for 2 to Twilo and back. :)
David VP 05-31-2004, 01:24 AM Has anyone else noticed a few mistakes the Digital Disc makers made in the "titles" of some episodes?
Most blatant is the rather odd mistitling of "PINK PILLS AND PURPLE PARENTS". The DVD packaging (in various locations on screen & on the paperwork in the case) claims this episode is called "PINK PILLS FOR PURPLE PATIENTS". A curious mistake indeed. :)
Another minor error is the disc's claim that "THE GHOST OF A. CHANTZ" is called "A GHOST OF A. CHANTZ", which is incorrect.
Also: In the episode with the humongously-long title ("TRUMPETS FALL DEAF ON A CONSCIENCE..."), the DVD claims there's still more words .... "Or Something Like That". This latter part is NOT part of the on-screen wording of the title.

David VP,
This was discussed right after the Season4 DVDs came out. The thread is probably deep within the bowels of the board by now!
I've noticed lots of dialogue in this series that doesn't make sense to me. For example, when Buddy and Sally are talking about Uncle Spunky, Rob acts like he doesn't know who they're talking about until they say Uncle Spunky the suer. Then Rob knows who they're talking about and asks "Is that THEE Spunky?", like there's more than one Uncle Spunky.
OK, here's a crappy trivia question. What small mistake does Dick Van Dyke make in his acting In "Bupkis"? What I'm thinking of is not that he dials the phone and then looks up the radio station's number. HINT: The mistake (I think it's a mistake, anyway) is in the same scene as the phone mistake I just mentioned. I hope all that makes sense

I always wondered since Laura admitted that she got married at 17, How she had time to meet & date all these men including Joe Coogan, Jim Darling, etc etc.. She must have started dating when she was 9.. I guess our little Laura was a little wild for that era. : :D

Petrie Malone 05-31-2004, 06:42 PM So... about how old was Laura during the series? Was she Mary Tyler Moore's age, younger, or older? I've always been confused about Laura's age!

I got it!
When Rob "mouths" the words "Diamond Mine", he actually mouths "Diamond RING", instead of "Mine".
I've always thought this one MIGHT be intentionally done. Considering it's been so many years since Rob wrote the song, it's possible his memory would be a little fuzzy as to the exact lyrics.
Good points also re. Laura's age when supposedly dating all these guys before marrying Rob @ 17. Of course this also brings up a bit of another problem during the "flashbacks" when Laura is supposed to be only 17. We see a "17-yr.-old" Laura in many eps.; while MTM is really 23, 24, or 25.
Dorothys BestPal 05-31-2004, 09:20 PM I always figured that they were married in the mid 19 50s and Richie was 5 when the show started, Laura was 17 when she got married. so000 I figure that Laura was about 25 and Rob was in his mid 30s.
David VP 05-31-2004, 09:20 PM Rob says, "Help me get my thumb backs." I've noticed that for years!
Exactly. You win the prize. :)
