Why do you ask? Do you need a donor?

Michael [hXc]
05-13-2004, 09:02 PM
I asked because I was wondering if there were any people here with rare ones, and also to see if anyone else had mine.

My blood type is 0 positive. I found this out when I donated blood to the Red Cross. Type 0 is the most common, but it's also the most in demand.
According to a pamphlet I got in the mail, 0 positive can be transfused to more than 85% of the population (0 positive, 0 negative, B positive, B negative and AB positive).

0 negative blood types can be transfused to anyone, any blood type.

Also according to the Red Cross, donating blood saves up to 3 lives. And, only 3% of people who qualify to donate do so. That's why I am going to set up another appointment to donate for next Monday at a local church.

I have no idea. I've never given blood and I've never asked what my blood type is. I really should probably find that out in case something would happen to me!

Wow Fleet, something else we have in common!

I'm an O+ but I can't donate blood anymore :( I've lived overseas for more than a year and am anemic. Stinks.

I have absolutely no clue what my blood type is, but I've always wondered. I've always meant to ask during a blood test, but I get so freaked out that I forget to. There's a red cross blood drive coming up soon (and since I'm now 17), I can donate. So, I'll have to ask them what I am.

Anemic? What type of anemia do you have? (Aplastic, Folic-acid deficiency, Hemolytic, Iron deficiency or Pernicious [B-12 deficiency]?)
Most types are curable, or at least treatable.

O neg

My previous employer every six months had a bus come in for donors, I gave 8 times in 4 years. I have only 1 in the last 2 years since leaving, in Canada there is not any drop ins you have to book in advance. Things just seem to slip and I forget but this post reminded me and will be booking a appt for next week.

It is a great gift especially if you ever have someone close to you who ever needs blood, shows you how important giving is.

Thanks for the reminder guys
Cheers

Wow good for you, bone marrow donation from what I have heard is pretty painful. Not something I have mustered up the courage to do, what made you do it? A friends family are all donors because one of the youngest kids was fighting leukemia (5 years in remission thanks to marrow donors).

My best friend had Non-Hodgekins Lymphoma. She went thru all the rounds of chemo and such. Finally they treated her white blood cells and replanted them in her. She has been cancer free for 7 years now. On the 5th anniversary of her remission, I decided to register. The actual registration itself is painless. When you give blood they simply take an extra vial of blood. That's it. If I can save another life, then I can stand the pain. I went thru labor and eventually a C-Section, so I figure that can't be much worse.... LOL!!
