You know the old saying "when it rains, it rains ****?"

You shouldn't, because I made it up. It's actually "when it rains, it pours." But that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, I have two pugs. One is a male, who's nine. He's doing great. In fact, for a pug, he's in great shape!

The other dog, though, a female, isn't in such great shape. She's seven, and she went totally blind last year. On top of that, she is more than ten lbs. overweight (which is a lot for a pug) and has really bad arthritis. She also has really bad breathing problems and is starting to go deaf. She's not living a very good life.

We decided we're going to put her to sleep sometime before we go on our week-long family vacation in California on June 1.

The vet has asked me if I want to be in the room with her when the procedure is done, and I haven't really decided. I'm leaning toward no, though.

I've actually seen this coming for almost a year, but it doesn't make it any easier. Every time I look at that dog, it just breaks my heart, because I know what's in store for her.

We've had both dogs since they were pupies. It's tough.

I know it's for the best, though. The best thing we can do for her is to end her suffering.

Thanks for reading.

I'm so sorry, my heart is breaking for you. We had to put our Cocker Spaniel that we had for 12 years to sleep in October, that I have to say is the hardest thing I have ever done. Our dog was suffering from seizures, and was going blind as well, it broke my heart to see him running into the walls and the furniture, and the seizures were so bad, he no energy left after them.

There was no way I could be in the room with him, it was way too hard, my heart would have died for sure if I had.

This is hard to hear, but this is the best thing for your dog. At least he won't be suffering anymore, and I just recently started to get over losing him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you

I really feel for you, Brad. Losing a pet is very hard, as I have found out in life.

I would NEVER under any circumstances be in the same room as my pet when they get put to sleep. If Oscar (a cat I've had since he was a kitten in October) had to be put to sleep, it would be really hard for me. It would really break my heart seeing the cat I had raised since he was a kitten being euthanized. Even thinking about it now is starting to get tears welled up in my eyes.

Thanks, everyone. My other dog, Max, is doing just fine. He sends his regards and wanted me to post a pic of himself (the big showoff). :)

He also asked me to give out our address in case there are any Sitcoms Online posters with female pugs, but I had to remind him he's neutered.

"Oh," he said. "I forgot."

Aww. :)

We also have two pugs, boy and girl. The girl we have is going blind and has had tumors removed a lot. She has cancer but I don't know a lot about it since my mom lies to make me feel better.

I'm really sorry about your dog. :( But at least she won't be suffering, so I guess that's a good thing though it's tough losing a pet.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog AKA:(

I had a similar experience a year ago when we had to put our 20 year old poodle to sleep. He was a big part of our family and it was almost like losing a sibling.

I really don't know what to say- I guess time heals all wounds

I'm so sorry... you have my condolences, as well. Over the years, I've lost quite a few pets that meant the world to me. Unfortunately, I've also been in your shoes. It's painful and something you don't really get over. :(

Tell Max he has another fan. What a cutie he is. :D

im sorry AKA - that is a very tough thing for anyone to go through, but it is something that almost every pet owner must face some day :(

i'd advise you to go with your instinct to stay out of the room when the procedure is done; you are much better off having good memories to hold on to

Truly the most heartbreaking things about pet ownership is having to put one down.

We had to put our family dog to sleep when I was in college. But she had a good long life (15 years!) and it was for the best.

My brother's dog turned 10 this year, and I couldn't help notice the last time I was visiting how old he has become.

This is always a sad ordeal. Just the thought of my pet dying someday makes me sad.

Aww, he's so cute. :)

Sorry to hear about your other dog :( I've been there too and can understand how you feel about going in with her. We put one of chihuahuas down in 93 and I went in with Laverne and held her through the whole thing. I couldn't do that again.

I wouldn't be in the room either. As someone else said, you want to remember the good things about the dog, not the bad.

I'm sorry for your loss. My beagle had to be put to sleep several years ago and I still think of him every once in a while.

I hate it when people are insensitive to those who are upset over the loss of a pet. To many, their pet is like a member of the family and their death can be just as devastating to a person as the loss of a human family member.

While we're on the subject of sick pets:

My neighbor has two dogs, one is a little puppy and they just got it a few months ago, the other is a REALLY old dog. They are both females. The old dog is about 16 years old in human years which is REALLY old for a dog. She's gotta have some kind of surgery in a few weeks and they are only giving her a 30% chance of survival. :(

It's really awful having to put a pet to sleep. Two years ago, my mom had my cat, Tex, put to sleep. The worst part was that my sister and I weren't even home when she took him in. We got home from church, and she told us that she had him put to sleep. He had kidney stones or something like that.

You've got my condolences- I think animals are really a lot like people- and they're a comfort. I feel so sorry for you- I hope you'll be ok.

That must have been really shocking- I'd rather know before something like that happens. I can't imagine losing my dog- she's about 7 or 8 and still in good health thank god. My Uncle's had his dog for about 18 years- it had an operation on it's leg before and hobbles a bit but gets along just fine. But my uncle in the country has loads of dogs in the farm (he just takes them in I think) and there was this one with cataracts, arthiritis and I think she had something wrong with her skin (her ears looked different)- and it was painful seeing her suffer. At least your dog will be in a better place.

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I had to put my most special cat, Molly, to sleep in Dec. 2000 and that was very painful. I still miss her terribly. :(

Cute dog, AKA. :)

Aww, Im so sorry. I hate reading things like this, it kills me. It doesnt feel good putting them to sleep, but its for the best, and they shouldnt have to suffer for the rest of their lives. We had to put our 2 dogs asleep when they were 15/16. They lived a long life, but it still doesnt make it any easier. As for you watching them put your dog to sleep, my Dad did that for both our dogs. I myself wouldnt be able to handle it, but it is a good way to say youre last goodbye.

We're giving her extra love, affection and treats the next few weeks before she goes through the procedure. We're thinking of having it done at the end of May.

I'm really sorry about your dog AKA. :(

I sometimes wonder if any of my dogs leave the world will I be there to hold them? I probably would want to hold them. But I am a scardey cat... My family had a dog who's passed away but I didn't get to see her when she went. :(

Thanks to both of you. Yeah, it was really hard. When I handed her over to the worker, I about lost it. It was really hard.

At least I got to say my goodbyes. I'm glad her pain is over and that she died peacefully, because in her condition, she could have had a sudden, horrible, painful death.

Master, It's Time

Master, dear Master, the old dog said,
My road has come to an end.
No more can I ramble by your side
Your loved and trusted friend.

My eyes, once filled with joy of life,
Are dimmed with age and pain.
The walks we shared by field and stream
Must wait for another day.

You cared for me with all your heart,
And I gave you my all.
But now, beloved master,
Another Master calls.

I know you hate to let me go,
But my love is yours to keep.
The time has come, my dearest friend,
When I need to go to sleep.

Your kindness made my life a joy
And you love me, this I know.
Show me your love one final time
And gently let me go.

Master, my beloved friend,
As we say our last good-bye,
Know that I will be waiting
For you on the other side.

Then we will ramble the woods again,
Walk the fields when the leaves start to fall.
I'll be sitting right here by the golden gates
Waiting for your call.

Here's something that got me through my grief.........

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
