View Full Version : Longest running current sitcom??
barwars 05-08-2004, 05:46 PM With the exceptions of Everybody Loves Raymond, The Simpsons and Frasier(which ends in 5 days anyways)....
what is the longest running CURRENT sitcom??
I dont think there's anything thats been around for more than 6 Seasons.... but I could be wrong.
jamesanthony 05-08-2004, 05:56 PM Simpsons is the longest, then Raymond (fall 1996) then King of the Hill (I think early 97) then That 70s Show (I think early 98). King of Queens and Will and Grace started in Fall 98.
I may have forgotten something, but can't think of what it might be.
Dean Winchester 05-08-2004, 06:09 PM if South Park counts as a sitcom, that's been on since summer 1997

I guess South Park would be considered a sitcom.
I hope South Park goes on for a long time, its one of the few shows that gets better with age.

I agree, just this season alone (season 8), I can think of 3 that already rank as "classic SP episodes", The Jeffersons (Michael Jackson), Up The Down Steroid and Good Times With Weapons.

Season 8.... the highest numbered season yet!!
Norman Lear is completely right -- South Park is definately All in The Family for a younger generation (not that we cant appreciate All in the Family)

too bad SP hasn't spun off spinoffs the way AITF did. Imagine a Timmy series, lol.

LOL. Timmy is my fave, alongside Cartman and Butters. I am excited for season 4 to come out in June since that's the season that had some of Timmy's greatest moments ("Gobbles!!!") in it.
PZelda 05-08-2004, 07:47 PM Ya guys have all the bases covered. I could only think of The Simpsons...That show's been on since I was a little girl.
Oh! Um, well, I wouldn't consider this a sitcom but The Rugrats has been going since 1991...It's closing in on its 13th season now. It beat out "You Can't Do That On Television" (11 seasons) two seasons ago (2001).

I looked here at Rugrats - http://imdb.com/title/tt0101188/ - and it has [1991-????] under the title.
All Grown Up is separate from the baby version. It started last fall. http://imdb.com/title/tt0387714/
PZelda 05-08-2004, 07:53 PM Uh-oh, you're right, Tim...

Rugrats is going end in 2004, but it's spin-offs are going to be just starting.

the only episodes that really ever held my interest were the ones with the 2 "surfer dudes" who seemed to work EVERYWHERE.

The first few years were pretty rocky...they didn't make any eps between '94 to '97, then they came back and made new eps...

Yep...I wouldn't buy it on DVD, either...If they were the first 3 seasons (91-94), then maybe. But IMO, Rugrats jumped the shark when it came back in '97.
tvfan0101 05-08-2004, 08:55 PM There's also The Drew Carey Show which has been on the air since 1995 and despite not being on the regular fall schedule on ABC, it is still airing. Midway through Season Eight, in January of 2003 the series was put on hiatus due to low ratings but ABC was under contract to produce the show for one more season and burned off the rest of Season Eight in the summer of 2003.
Season Nine will begin airing in June of 2004, with two episodes per night for a while, as ABC burns of their remaining episodes.

That's right! I forgot this show. ABC must really regret signing a contract to keep it for so long. Under normal circumstances it would have probably vanished last year.

actually, I think networks should do that more often. During the summer, the only "new" shows they air are generally reality crap. I wish the networks would use summer as a time to air "new" episodes of scripted series that aren't popular enough during the tv season. I mean, NBC promotes their "summer tv season" but every last show is reality. I'd rather watch endless reruns than reality shows.

Without a doubt it would've been canned a while ago. It was a very odd move on ABC's part. Honestly, in this here-one-day-gone-the-next television industry, networks never take chances like that. I was surprised when I read about it.

I guess they figured that it was doing well at the time and they didn't have a lot of popular shows at the time. I think they signed a bunch of other shows like Alias for several year contracts. NBC has the original Law and Order for one more year of what was a 5 year contract and it was 10 years old when they signed it and they may sign for it to run even longer.
