View Full Version : The Friends finale: Just so-so
Dr. Thong 05-06-2004, 10:32 PM This is what all the hype was about...?
I'm not saying that the final episode of Friends was bad...but it wasn't really that great, either. At least not in the same way the finales of such shows as M*A*S*H were.
I will admit that Monica and Chandler getting an unexpected twin baby was a nice, curve-ball twist that I didn't see coming and Joey's farewell to the foosball machine was kind of funny, but other than that, it was pretty much just another episode.
Ross and Rachel got back together? Again? Wow! What a surprise!
I'm sure many of you will disagree and probably want my head for writing this, but I have to call it the way I see it. Again, it wasn't a bad episode, but I guess I was expecting more from a show that's ending after a ten-year run.
:(

That was my favorite part of the episode.
Im not big on sappy endings -- but the Joey/Chandler scenes were great.
tsmiller70 05-06-2004, 11:03 PM Hey,
I liked Seinfelds finale a lot better. There were moments in the Friends finale that funny. But, no where close to other episodes.
Friendsfan#555 05-06-2004, 11:10 PM I think they needed to end it with a proposal from Ross. There was nothing that special with Ross and Rachel getting back toghether. Other then that I thought the episode was pretty good. It wasn't that funny but it had to be more sentimental. I thought Chandler and Joeys godbye was cute and I liked how they showed the empty apartment to end it.
musicradio77 05-06-2004, 11:16 PM I saw the empty apartment at the end of the finale. When he saw a girl came to the apartment and kissed until it stopped at the last minute on my DVR. I didn't see the entire cast ending since it ended at 9:59 PM which is more than 2 minutes earlier before "ER" came on.:( I like it better than the "Full House" finale.

then I'd have to say you will certainly prefer seasons 1-6 to 7-10. In the earlier seasons, much of the humor revolved around Chandler and Joey

I thought so.
I always thought the earlier episodes were better anyways.
They werent as rich.
Pavan 05-06-2004, 11:34 PM I didn't watch, but the workers on TV Land watching Friends was interesting, lol. Anyway, I'm betting the Friends finale in the ratings will be less than a 30 rating. Just to compare...MASH's finale had a 60.2/77; Seinfeld 41.3/58; and Cheers 45.5/64. A regular episode of The Beverly Hillbillies had a 44.0/65. And this season's highest rated series for the season is CSI at a 16.0/24. Friends averages a 12.9/20 for the season. So what do you think the finale of Friends will get? I think it won't be near Cheers or Seinfeld at all, probably between a 28-35 rating and a 45-50 share.

:( I have to agree with Dr. Thong. I thought the show was going to be much better. What I really wanted to see was Chandlers ex. (The one with the big mouth) I think she should've appeared. Plus I think something was lacking in the Ross and Rachel story. I was wanting to cry but, my tears didn't come down (and I'm usually not like that).
Overall I will miss the friends. :(
*GoodMorningCalgary* 05-07-2004, 09:33 AM It was okay, I think the first part with Chandler and Monica's baby and stuff was just so-so. But The second part was much better, especially with Joey and Chandler. And it sure as hell was better than the Seinfeld finale....I hated that episode

NBC must not be happy at all:
The "Friends" finale averaged 29.2/42, with about 51 million total viewers, at 9 p.m. I predicted a lower than 30 rating, lol, it got a 29.2. The clip show at 8 p.m. got a 21.5/34.

Janice? They wrapped things up with her in an episode that aired shortly before the finale.
Personally, I thought it was fantastic. Sure, everybody and their mother knew that Ross and Rachel were going to get back together, but I was seriously worried when she got back on the plane. They tied everything up nicely, I felt, and it wasn't too sappy.
A terrific ending, all in all.
Nanny Fine 05-07-2004, 01:17 PM I was so thrilled with the finale. While I wish it were a season finale and not a series if the show had to end it coudln't have been wrapped up more completely, at least to me.
I've watched this show since the Pilot - originally, when it began airing in the fall of 1994. I remember the summer promo's for it (I may even have some of those on tape), I remember the "Who took the Coke" contest they had. I've been taping the show since the pilot off of NBC - it's above and beyond my most favorite TV show of all time. Last night ended an era for me - this show signifies so much for me for so many reasons over the past 10 years.
When I was pregnant with my daughter (fall of 1994) I was very very ill and I watched and taped the show religiously. I would spend hours rewatching the tapes of FRIENDS that I had because I was so sick I couldn't do anything else. My 80 year old grandmother would sit and tolerate watching the show with me (she lived with me while I was ill) and would quietly chuckle at the sexual tones of the show while saying "you shoulnd't be watching that".
I'm a Ross and Rachel fan - diehard, hardcore. I loved them from the beginning clear through the end. When Ross said "Unless we are on a break" last night I almost DIED laughing but it was such a pivotal moment and saying - I was glad to hear that in there.
I wish there was another season. I really do. I hope they guest star on Joey. I really do.
These 6 characters gave me a great 10 years of entertainment. If you don't like the show, don't like them, it's fine but they were a significant part of my past 10 years and I'm going to miss them like mad.
Thanks for the laughs and memories FRIENDS!
Kudos on the finale!
felicitylen 05-07-2004, 01:17 PM I haven't really been catching up with the (I liked the older episodes better), but I wanted to watch the series finale. Anyways, it was okay. I'm glad it ended with Monica and Chandler with their twins and Ross and Rachel together. Other then that, it was an okay ending. Nothing surprising. I think the whole Ross and Rachel drama was predictable. It was an okay ending. Too much hype.

does a share mean how many people watched TV overall??
and the neilsen rating is the number of people that watched the finale??

Explanation, courtesy of nielsenmedia.com:
The terms rating and share are basic to the television industry. Both are percentages. A rating is a percent of the universe that is being measured, most commonly discussed as a percent of all television households. As such, a rating is always quantifiable, assuming you know the size of the universe (TV households, persons, women 18 – 34, and so forth). A share is the percent of households or persons using television at the time the program is airing and who are watching a particular program. Thus, a share does not immediately tie back to an actual number, because it is a percent of a constantly changing number – TV sets in use. Shares can be useful as a gauge of competitive standing.
BingAling889 05-07-2004, 02:22 PM I personally loved the finale...although I don't really see how it was a "gdoobye", since the only real thing changing at that time was Monica and Chandler moving out.
It would have been nice to have at least mentioned Joey and Phoebe's future. Not even a word regarding Joey moving to Hollywood or what was in Mike and Phoebe's future, aside from the baby talk.
But I pretty much burst into tears when Rachel showed up in Ross's doorway and roared laughing when he talked about being "on a break".
As Monca has said before, "It's the end of an ERA!"
Ohio8 05-07-2004, 02:45 PM I agree.......if it were MY show, I would,ve ended the scene where Ross gets the message from Rachel on the plane, then gone to the final scene where the Friends -- minus Rachel, of course -- are at Monica and Chandler's apartment as the leave for their suburban house.
benjamoon 05-07-2004, 03:00 PM I LOVED it... I thought it was a fitting way to end the show. All the references to past episodes were great. The twins was a nice twist, the foosball thing was great, and Ross and Rachel ended exactly the way I hoped it would. Bravo to the creators and actors. It fit what the show was all about
tiff7 05-07-2004, 03:16 PM I agree w/y'all!!!! :)

savy333 05-07-2004, 04:13 PM How far away is the house in West Chester? I mean, they are still going to be working on the city, so they will all probably be seeing each other every few days (sans Joey). But I like knowing that they are not all going to be split apart. It is still a big goodbye because they are not going to be across the hall from each other.

Thanks! With Ross and Rachel it was just another example of them getting back together when it seemed like it was slipping away from them. No proposal, no nothing. I knew they would end up together, but I figured it would have ended with everyone moving on: Monica and Chandler with their babies to the new house in the suburbs, Joey to California, etc. Well, from the looks of the finale, only Monica and Chandler are moving on.
Of course, we all know that Joey moves on, but apparently he doesn't...yet.
Did anybody see the Joey preview? It looks promising...especially since Drea DeMatteo from The Sopranos is playing his sister and Jennifer Coolidge from A Mighty Wind will be playing his agent.
I logged onto here today expecting to be lynched for my comments, but you guys have been pretty cool about it. You guys are all right!

Maggie Wheeler (Janice) shows up occasionally in a recurring role on Everybody Loves Raymond. However, she speaks in her normal speaking voice - only a tad nasal, compared to Janice's creepy high-pitched whine.
And when you hear her without the whine, you realize she's pretty hot!;)
Janet McFarland 05-07-2004, 04:24 PM This was a great finale! Me and my friends were talking about it today. I liked how Ross and Rachel got back together , even though I think he shouldve proposed. I also liked how Monica and Chandler had 2 babies instead of 1. That was sweet. There was also some funny lines from Joey at the end.
Joey: Was this room always purple?
Joey:Where should we go for a cup of coffee?
 :D

Artfiore1 05-07-2004, 04:39 PM Hi all,
As per usual, the "brilliant" critics -- and by that I mean the people on this message board who were disappointed in the "Friends" finale -- could not, collectively, scrape together a creative idea if their lives depended upon it.
I heard complaints about the "M*A*S*H" and "Cheers" finales, after each one originally aired. But of course, none of the complainers was able to suggest a sensible way in which either show could've been made better. Hello? There's a reason why the people who write the shows are the people who write the shows and you're not! More than one person here suggested that Ross should've proposed to Rachel . . . as if marriage is supposed to be the ultimate ending to everything on TV. Somebody else said that there should've been one more scene with Chandler's ex, Janice . . . as if Janice, one last time, saying, "Oh . . . my . . . God" would've changed this from a "so-so" show to a spectacular one. I've got news for you -- in a city of millions and millions of people, you just *don't* keep running into your ex-girlfriend or boyfriend. I've got an ex-wife whom, in 22 years, I have yet to just happen to run into even *once*! And, I've never lived in a city the size of New York.
Shows evolve over time, characters change and mature. Plotlines lead to completely different kinds of situations. Often, if a show has been on the air long enough, by the end, it looks practically *nothing* like what it started out being. There are diehard fans of the first 3 seasons of "M*A*S*H" who didn't like a single thing that happened on that show after, say, 1975. Naturally, those people hated the finale, not to mention the last 8 seasons, of that series.
The "Friends" finale, in my opinion one of the greatest final episodes of any show, ever, was a wonderful mix of humor, sadness, surprise and suspense. And, come on -- you cannot tell me that as Ross debated whether or not to go after Rachel, then raced to the airport, initially missed seeing her, then finally got to see her and tell her he loved her and she got on the plane anyway, that you knew the whole time they would end up together in the end! Sell it somewhere else. I'm not buying it here.

Artfiore1 05-07-2004, 05:37 PM Hi again, all,
And, by the way, not every character has to "move on" after a TV series has ended. For instance, the majority of the people at "Cheers" continued right on doing what they always had -- we just simply were not seeing it anymore.

Dogma66603 05-07-2004, 10:19 PM The problem with the finale is that for the first nine seasons of the show, absolutely nothing really big happened except for one or two forced romances between the Friends. Then suddenly in the 10th and final planned season, a bunch of random plotlines for the characters to be sepertated appear and are very rushed and stupid. I think the finale teaches us that absolutely nothing has happened to these boring, self-absorbed, unfunny idiots in the past 10 years.
And what kind of lazy idiot writer TOTALLY forgets a main character's child? Rachel is going to Paris WITHOUT her baby! Ross doesn't care that Rachel might be leaving WITH HIS BABY?! THE BABY ISN'T EVEN MENTIONED, EVEN WHEN MONICA AND CHANDLER BRING HOME THEIR BABY!!! (in another idiot plot twist).
Horrid, horrid ending to a (for most of its run) horrid, horrid show. 1/5

Actually, they mentioned that Emma was with Rachel's mother and that they had decided that Rachel was going to go to Paris, get the living arrangements all set up, and then her mother would fly over on Sunday, I believe. There was even some joking involved, someone said too bad Rachel's mother had to sit through 14 hours of Emma and Rachel replied that it was too bad Emma had to be with her mother for 14 hours.
Sorry to disappoint. You seemed so intent on ripping the finale apart.

Yes, I believe the joke went something like "14 hours on a plane with my mother talking about Atkins? Poor EMMA!"
And Dogma66603, what the hell do you mean "nothing happened except a few forced romances"?? Ross had a son, Ross and Rachel got together, broke up, got back together again, broke up again, Ross got married AND divorced, married Rachel, got divorced AGAIN, Phoebe met her brother and her father, and had her brother's babies,Monica and Chandler fell in love and got married, Ross and Rachel got back together and had a baby, "broke up" again, Joey fell in love with Rachel, then fell out of love with her, Phoebe met Mike and married him, Monica and Chandler got their baby, and Ross and Rachel finally got back together.
That sounds like a lot more than "forced" romance.

I couldn't have put it better, so I won't even try. I loved the finale though. It didn't try to do something bizarre or different, it just ended with a really good episode. It wasn't overly sad or dramatic, just sweet and sentimental. This is one of the few sitcoms I've watched since it first aired, and watched every season, even the later ones. Of course, I'm in the minority of people who actually liked the later seasons of Friends. Anyway, it was a great ending. I was not disappointed.

I didn't like this subplot. I really think that Emma should have been shown in the finale. After all, she is a symbol or representation of Ross' and Rachel's love. I think it would have been very appropriate for their ending scene together to have included Emma, and for them to talk about her very briefly. I was really disappointed that the baby did not appear in the finale...
(BTW: I had not watched Friends regularly for about a year and a half before the finale, and was wondering when was the last time that Ross' son was seen or mentioned?)

We just covered this. Emma was with Rachel's mother. Yes, perhaps showing Emma with Ross and Rachel would have been a nice touch, but that may have taken away from the impact of Chandler and Monica's babies.

Exactly.
I didnt think the finale was all that great -- but then again, I cant think of any better way to have it finish.
Chandler's response to going to get some coffee and saying "where?" was a great way to end it all.
cheers freak 05-08-2004, 12:48 PM I honestly thought it was a great ending for the show- better than I thought it would be. The last scene in particular I thought was great and very touching because you could sense what the show was all about: true friendship. In that way it kind of reminded me of the Cheers finale. But I thought it was a classy end for a classic sitcom and I will miss it.

Artfiore1 05-08-2004, 12:51 PM Pitooey,
Money has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's a fact of life: The lowest form of life on this planet is the critic -- the talentless, soulless moron who, couldn't write or produce a better movie or TV show than the one he or she is so mercilessly ripping apart . . . if someone held a gun to his or her head and told them they HAD TO!!
The easiest thing in the world is to sit around saying, "This was wrong, that was wrong . . . that's no good . . . ."
We all get more than enough of it with magazines, newspapers, TV news reports, etc., featuring unqualified, completely valueless idiots telling us what's good and what's bad on TV and in movies!
It's the same thing with politics -- people who could barely run their own lives are founts of criticism about how a president runs *an entire country* or how a governor runs *an entire state*. If they could do a better job, they WOULD BE. Yet, strangely, they never are. And, I'm not just talking about today -- it's traditional, been going on for as long as I can remember.
No matter what you do, there is and always will be *someone* who doesn't like it or disagrees . . . and who should just keep their mouth shut!

Yeah, I was expecting them to be there at the hospital when the twins were born. Woulda been nice, but I'm glad they didn't overrun the show with guest stars. It focused on who it should have, the 6 main cast members. And besides, you never know who you might see in Joey! I for one would LOVE to see Janice show up in LA on vacation:D
Dr. Thong 05-08-2004, 03:22 PM I'm really glad that Friends took the Everybody Loves Raymond approach to Emma and showed her only occasionally and briefly. The focus remained on the six principals, as it should have.
Of course, they pulled a "Chuck Cunningham" (Happy Days) with Ben...whatever happened to him, anyway? I think they missed a good plot opportunity to have Ben be jealous of Emma.

Chances are, you would've complained about the lack of originality, with the "older child being jealous of the new baby" story having already been done to death by so many other shows.

I honestly thought it was a great ending for the show- better than I thought it would be. The last scene in particular I thought was great and very touching because you could sense what the show was all about: true friendship. In that way it kind of reminded me of the Cheers finale. But I thought it was a classy end for a classic sitcom and I will miss it.
Agreed. I was afraid it would be pretty awful and was surprised, and happily so. I was surprised a few times the way and I know I would never have come up with something as good as the finale that aired.
barwars 05-08-2004, 06:46 PM I wouldve like to see Chandler's moms again.... they were probably the funniest guest stars ever.

In the finale, when Phoebe told Ross that she thought Monica and Chandler's baby would be a girl, Ross told her that she thought Ben was going to be a girl. I believe that is the first time Ben has been mentioned in two years, but at least we know Ben hasn't joined Judy from Family Matters or Chuck from Happy Days in TV child amnesia land.

I would be interested in hearing what YOU would have done to make it a better finale. After seeing finales of other shows especially the Mary Tyler Moore finale (Which I loved) my reasoning was that I expected much more than the finale they gave in friends.
I thought Rachel going away for another job was blah...... Maybe they should've had her with a new man who was becoming interested in her and Ross was seeing it from the sidelines (again). Maybe a hunk like Brad Pitt. Ross could've maybe have seen her getting a little too close to the new guy and maybe a little close to Emma and that would've freaked Ross out. Maybe Rachel would've told Ross about the new guy and Ross could've looked at her and told her NO....... I love you........ I love you Rachel......... I've always loved you. (It could've started out like that)... Now remember when those writers are together in a room there is more that one head so the others would put in their input. Maybe the new guy (Brad) would ask her to marry him and they were ready to leave to do so.....
As for Monica and Chandler... I would've had them in the hospital and the girl could've had the twins but, I would've like to see Chandler faint. (These are just my ideas)...
Pitooey 05-08-2004, 09:45 PM Imagine this.............
Rachel in the coffee house with a Brad lookalike. Ross comes in..........
He sees Rachel kissing Brad........
He goes ballistic....
He pushes Brad away from Rachel (His beloved) and they scuffle in the coffee house in front of the patrons.
Cups and saucers are thrown all over.
The cops come...........
(I could go on and on)

The whole "someone else is in love with her so he has to act fast to get her" has been done before. With Monica, Chandler and Richard.
As for the fainting thing, the whole "husand passing out during labor" joke has become so cliched throughout the years on TV, commercials and movies that it's not even worthy of a chuckle.

well, Brad already guest-starred in season 8 as one of Ross' old high school buddies, remember the "I Hate Rachel" club?

Art,
I will concede the point on this one, but they could have put a Friends-like twist on it. Like, Ross anticipating jealousy and Ben not really getting bent out of shape over it or not caring, yet Ross still feels he has to overcompensate by showing extra attention to Ben, who doesn't understand why his father's doing this.
Oh well, the point is moo because the show's over, anyway...

I just said that I would've liked something more exciting to happen to the finale. You have your opinions and I have mine. It's no big deal because the finale is over.
The friends show was a good show. If I said the end was cheesy so what?
ricardo/mertz 05-09-2004, 10:51 AM I think the finale was pretty good. Ross and Rachel are gonna get it right this time. Chandler and Monica got their family. Pheobe and Mike were talking about babies and Joey(although never mentioned) is moving to California.
Maybe some of the friends will show up for a visit on Joey.
Pentimento 05-09-2004, 07:02 PM I just hope someone told Rachel's mom about the change of plans. Then again, it would have made a cute epilogue:
(Mrs. Greene arrives at Rachel's apartment in Paris with little Emma.)
"Hellooooo?! Anyone home...?"
tiff7 05-09-2004, 08:54 PM The finale was wonderful. :)

I was so thrilled with the finale.
Awww, I agree.
I know I'm late to comment but I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the finale. Yeah, it was predictable, over-hyped and everything but it was a fitting ending to the show. I like that they didn't try to be different or original, because 9 times out of 10, that turns out worse. I liked all the references to previous shows. Loved Rachel showing up at Ross', Phoebe's use of 'phalange' yet again, the tender Joey/Chandler/foosball table moment and the final scene in the empty apartment and the 6 keys. I have to say I was a little sad. Okay, a lot sad. I spent most of my twenties watching this show and it will always remind me of this time in my life. I'm going to miss it because even though the last few seasons have suffered a little, it's still ten times better than most of the stuff out there now.
Thanks Jennifer, Courtney, Lisa, Matt, Matthew, David and everyone else from Friends for a great 10 years!
