I'd say sitcom wise, NBC had the best sitcoms that year. Followed by FOX then ABC and then CBS.
Feel free to discuss the 1990-91 season. Even once I move onto the next season.
Mr. Television 05-02-2004, 11:23 PM All I can say is that all the networks had top sitcoms then. Makes you wish they can come up with some good sitcom ideas today.
As for the networks for that season I'll give the edge to NBC followed by ABC, then CBS and then Fox although I did love Married With Children.
dawsongirl 05-03-2004, 01:40 AM I was definetly watching more ABC that year.
Ant-Lox 05-03-2004, 11:26 AM Abc was my thing back then, I didnt watch Married... until about 93.
Dean Winchester 05-03-2004, 11:38 AM it was all about Fox, NBC and ABC back then for me. My parents liked Evening Shade and Major Dad on CBS though.
barwars 05-03-2004, 04:19 PM NBC kicked ass back then.
Personally -- I think NBC has had the best sitcom on TV since "The Facts of Life", which was replaced by "Cheers" (although FOL still aired), then "Frasier"
Next year -- they have NOTHING, besides "Will & Grace" (not my cup of tea, or coffee, or whatever) and "Scrubs" (which I do enjoy)
ABC was doing pretty good too.
Lots of favorite there.
Not quite its "prime", but FOX had some decent shows.
But as for CBS -- "Murphy Brown" is the only that interests me.
CBS kind of ran dry it the sitcom realm during the 80s/90s.
Which is weird -- because they were a powerhouse in the first 30 years of TV.

I never watched CBS back then. Although now looking back I think NBC had the best shows. However, at the time, I watched ABC more. I also used to watch all five shows on FOX. Most of them, however were short-lived.
I forgot to list syndicated shows, but I'll just stick with the networks, since I have the old schedules for them. (Thanks to that TV book I own.)

Like ABC, most are good here. I'm not big on Wings, Seinfeld, and Fresh Prince here. Everything else is decent.
I'd have to give the edge to ABC though over NBC.

John Ritter returned to sitcoms this season with "Hearts Afire." Markie Post, who finished "Night Court" last season seemed to bounce back fast, seeing as she was also in "Hearts Afire."
NBC is still my pick for the best sitcoms this season. Followed by FOX, ABC and CBS.

For me, NBC is still the champ. However, I do like all the ABC shows. It was great that CBS finally added some new sitcoms, however, I don't care for any of them.
Mr. Television 05-04-2004, 11:26 PM Okay I'm a little behind. I'll start with 1991-92. I'll give the edge to ABC this year. The only sitcom on their I don't like is Anything with love followed very closely by NBC. Then I'll go with FOX as I started to watch Roc and Hermans Head that year too. Finally CBS. I didn't watch any of those shows regularly although once in awhile I'd catch Evening Shade and Major Dad.
Now for 1992-93. Abc is still #1 followed by NBC although it wasn't as close. I still watched my old favorites and although I liked Seinfeld, and Wings I didn't watch them every week. I wasn't to big on Mad About You. Fox remained in 3rd place and CBS in 4th although I did watch Hearts Afire occasionally and I watched Bob every week. I don't know why that wasn't a hit..
Finally 1993-94. Once again Abc is #1. I like nearly all of those shows. NBC is still #2 although it is fading somewhat for me. This year Fox and CBS are neck and neck as Roc and Herman's head were about to end and Although I liked Daves World, I didn't watch it much. And then CBS ruined Bob. What were they thinking?

ABC:
Full House (Season 8)

Home Improvement (Season 4)
Step by Step (Season 4)
Hangin' With Mr. Cooper (Season 3)
Boy Meets World (Season 2)
Grace Under Fire (Season 2)
Sister, Sister (Season 2)
Ellen (Season 2)
CBS:
Murphy Brown (Season 7)
Hearts Afire (Season 3)
Love & War (Season 3)
Dave's World (Season 2)
The Nanny (Season 2)

Frasier (Season 2)
The John Larroquette Show (Season 2)
Friends (Season 1)
In the House (Season 1) {Mid-Season}
NewsRadio (Season 1) {Mid-Season}
{Mid-Season}
WB:
The Parent 'Hood (Season 1)
Unhappily Ever After (Season 1)
The Wayans Bros. (Season 1)
NBC, to me has the best at this point. And finally, NewsRadio joins the sitcom world. ABC is next. FOX and CBS are out of there for me. I didn't watch either network at the time.
I had to edit in the WB channel. I forgot about it. Those three shows were all mid season shows.
Dean Winchester 05-05-2004, 04:09 AM 94-95 was a GREAT year for NBC. Friends started, Mad About You and Wings were both in arguably their prime, Seinfeld was on top of the world, etc... I also watched Roseanne (still) and Ellen on ABC at the time
barwars 05-05-2004, 04:03 PM Once again, in order from best to worst:
NBC (perfect transistion from Cheers to Frasier gets my vote up until fall 2004)
ABC
CBS (finally gets the edge)
FOX

I get my info from:
"The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows"
I get some help from TV Tome.
Because the book is just Prime Time, is the reason I haven't included "Saved by the Bell," "California Dreams" and the other TNBC shows.
Oh and every once in a while, I mess up on a certain show's season number. But as soon as I notice the mistake, I go back and fix it. I try to be very accurate, but keeping up with all these shows confuses me sometimes.
To Barwars88,
I could do the other decades as well. I just did the 90s because people around here don't seem to like the 1990s. So I was just trying to give the 90s a little boost.

Since I didn't watch Tv much in the 90s I'm not as biased against it as a decade. I actually dislike the 80s shows more. I watched a lot of those shows when they first came on at night and with only a handful of exceptions I don't want to see them in reruns, particularly the ones that started in the 80s and didn't carry over from the 70s.

In retrospect I really don't like sitcoms of the 1980's.
ALF
Charles in Charge
Cheers
Head of the Class
Night Court
Perfect Strangers
are the only shows I like.
I have fond memories watching 1990s shows with my older sister. And like four of my absolute favorites are from the 90s (Boy Meets World, Ellen, NewsRadio, Wings)
I have to say that it's strange looking at the 1990s decade from the 1990-91 season to the 1999-2000 season. Television had changed alot in that decade. I guess the other decade that changed ALOT was the 1960s. One because the decade started out in black and white and ended in color. But there were alot of other reasons too.
Dean Winchester 05-08-2004, 10:07 PM in 95-96, it was NBC and ABC for me. Ellen was in her best season (I thought the show was so much better before every storyline became "Ellen comes to to....."), and Roseanne was still hanging in even tho she had fallen from her throne. Friends and Seinfeld both had decent seasons, tho neither were at their best.

There is something very buttoned down and kind of repressive about the 80s. Plus the fashions and hairdos were really not very good: mullets and big moussed out hair, gheri curls, shoulder pads, too much make-up on women, slim jim neckties; who wants to see people dressed like that again?
I guess the other decade that changed ALOT was the 1960s. One because the decade started out in black and white and ended in color. But there were alot of other reasons too.
I can actually watch something from say 1963 to 1974 that I have never seen before and based upon the fashions, haridos, things the people do and say, tell exactly which year it is. That was a very revolutionary time period. More so than any other decade. Compare something like Frasier or Friends where the costumes and looks of the people over the whole run of the show don't change nearly as much as something like Bewitched where the show looks extremely different in 1972 than it did in 1964 when it began. Same with My Three Sons and a bunch of other shows from those years.
jamesanthony 05-08-2004, 10:23 PM My fault. The comment about the moussed out hair etc was from me, not TVAdam.

ABC again. lol...I so remember the terrible decision I had to make between Full House and Saved by the Bell. NBC really shouldn't have put SBTB up against FH. They were going for basically the same audience, but FH had had that audience for years already.
I also was watching a lot of NBC...and I think I watched CBS for The Nanny if nothing else.
hmm..I just realized 3 of the Night Court cast had sitcoms that year. Cool.

I've edited it. I forgot to add the mid season replacements.
Uh...ABC. But once Full House ended, I didn't watch as much TV.

Me too! Of all the decades, for me, the 80s is my least favorite. Night Court is the only 80s show I like.

UPN and WB are finally getting some shows. I remember watching "In the House" on NBC and then having to stay up till 2 in the morning to watch it on UPN. I missed almost every episode. Whereas on NBC I taped every episode. I watched ABC more this year, but in retrospect, NBC was still the best. I didn't watch "NewsRadio" this season, due to schedule change and I wasn't alone. It was the lowest rated NBC sitcom that year.

Didnt watch UPN at all that year.
And never watched Sister, Sister until reruns -- so they're both out.
ABC was my most watched network that year.
But the best has to go to NBC -- nothing beats Frasier
