Niles: " Wonderful expression. I just don't know how true it is, you don't see it turning up in a lot of opera plots. 'Ludwig, maddened by the poisoning of his entire family, wreaked vengeance on Gunther in the third act by living well.' "

Niles about Maris: Do you remember the year I plopped that big wedge of pumpkin pie in front of her, and we all laughed? [They all share a chuckle.] Then I put a big scoop of whipped cream on top of it and we laughed some more! [Another chuckle.] Then her eyes welled up with tears and we all knew it was time to stop.
