On todays episode "Mama's Girls" Mama introduced Effie as her sister- in -law Effie Harper. Well that means she is either Carl's sister or was married to Carl's brother?

I am watching that episode tonight. I am glad that we finally heard the truth about Aunt Effie. She is a Harper and not a Crowley. It makes it nice that Thelma cares so much about her considering that they are not any blood relations.

I don't think we will ever know if she was Carl's sister or married to Carl's brother. But wasn't Uncle Roy Carl's brother? And you know Aunt Effie wasn't married to him...

I would guess Carl's sister though. We are probably thinking more about this than the exec producers ever did!

 You are absolutely right! Roy was not married I am thinking. No other brother was ever mentioned! So maybe Effie was Carl's "Old Maid" sister? The producers evidently didn't care ,but we do! Right!? This is really important stuff. Didn't the producers realize this?

When Uncle Roy came back to visit, Thema said to him about having a free spirit and always in a hurry and on the go, and he said he was the one who never had time to settle down and raise an family. So that means Uncle Roy was never married, so that leaves Aunt effie as Sister of Roy and Carl .

That's what I think too ..

Mystery solved?

Whoa, whoa! lol

First of all, Effie was a Crowley in the NBC years, and a Harper in the syndicated years; true, in syndication years, we don't know how she's Mama's sister-in-law; there is never any rock solid proof.

And about Carl and Roy---Carl could have had more brothers, just as Mama did. And there may be 2 Uncle Roys in the Harper/Crowley families. There's Roy, Carl's brother, and then the Uncle Roy who lost a finger; and since he was referenced by Grandma Crowley, that was most likely a different Uncle Roy, since Carl's Roy had all 10 of his fingers. lol

So the mystery will always prevail....heehee! Lol! ;)

Oh weird. I never noticed that. Doesn't Thelma usually call her "Aunt Effie?" Kind of a funny thing to call your sister in law, isn't it?

Well, Effie was just "different", though---don't forget, she was diagnosed as clinically insane to some degree!

And I'm 99% sure Mama never called her "Aunt Effie" in the NBC years (granted she was only mentioned in 2 episodes), but since Effie was "eccentric" (a.k.a., "crazy", lol), and soooo old ("Aunt Effie? Well she's 3 days older'n God!" "Yeah, what kind of job could she possibly get?"), she was probably just kind of lovingly referred to as "Aunt Effie" by most people in the family. Also, Mama says "Effie" more than "Aunt Effie" upon close examination.

There are always exceptions to the whoe name thing; Naomi called Frannie "Aunt Fran" a few times though she was really her aunt-in-law.

And sometimes in families people call their great uncles or great great uncles "Uncle ____", too.

And who knows, maybe Mama called her "Aunt" Effie more to make herself feel younger! lol :p

Lol okay. I had thought Thelma almost exclusively called her "aunt" even when talking to her. I tried picturing my mom calling her *sisters-in-law "aunt" to their face, and that would just be crazy. O' course the way you desribe it (with Effie being so old and all, and it being a "loving" term) it actually makes sense.

*I still don't know if it's "sisters-in-law" or sister-in-laws."

Wow, don't we always have some very earth shattering and important discussions on this board?

Sometimes Mama called her "Aunt Effie" in relation to Vinton. Like if she were talking to Vinton and Naomi about Effie she would use Aunt Effie, since she is Vint's aunt.

^^^ Yeah, I forgot to mention that point, FTGOP...thanks. And sometimes she would even say to him, "Your Aunt Effie".

Kinda like when my mom says Gran or Pop or Grandmommy or Papa Dan to me---they're not her grandparents, they're her parents and in-laws; but it's just "the thing to do" in certain contexts, lol.

< I had thought Thelma almost exclusively called her "aunt" even when talking to her.>

Ya know, I did too! I thought she was "Aunt Effie", like, 85% of the time and "Effie" the rest, but I researched it and the results are actually way the opposite, lol. Not as extreme as 85/15, but still; a definite big difference.

Yeah, see--that's what I was stuck on! I just had it in my mind Thelma called her Aunt Effie when personally addressing her. Since that's not the case, I can adjust to Effie being Thelma's sister in law.

This is interesting to read about. I love reading blooper researching on my favorite shows.
