It was a different time. People were captivated by seeing someone as honest in his racism as George was. No way this could be done on TV now. I think even on cable this kind of character wouldn't play.

I read that the George Jefferson character made some viewers UNCOMFORTABLE at the time which led to the Toning down of the George Jefferson character

Oh definitely. He was really abrasive in the beginning. It's more than just race though. There was a show in the 80s called Buffalo Bill with Dabney Coleman playing a very rude, racist, manipulative sexist who hosted a talk show like Donahue and treated everyone like s**t . It was cancelled although the critics loved it because the guy was such a creep. TV viewers don't really warm up to lead characters who have nasty dispositions. Archie Bunker and Fred Sanford were racists but still likeable.
