Nate, I’m really sorry to leave like this but I just can’t
Help it. I’ll try to explain myself and hope you’ll respect
Me and my decision to get away from being a cop. Since
Liz shot me I started to feel different about our job and my
Friends, including you. I tried to ignore it but lately I feel
Imprisioned in my own skin because of what happened to
Me. So I decided to leave everything behind for a new start.
As to where I’ll go, I don’t know. I hope you don’t have
Revenge on your mind because I left you the way I did.
Please don’t try to follow and find me. It’s over. I better
Hurry because I have to catch my plane into my new life.
I’m really looking forward to that even though I’m also
Scared of it. But it was time for me, I needed a change.

Silent tears were falling down on the note in his hand. He didn’t care where he was anymore, nor about anything else. It just hurt too much, and the alcohol he was downing didn’t help like it was supposed to, but even seened to make it worse. Whenever he closed his eyes he saw her face, her beautiful blue eyes and that incredible smile that he loved to see so much. It was as if he could still hear her laughter all around him, her voice softly whispering words of love into his ear while her blond hair tickled his neck and he’d hold her close, inhaling her scent. He couldn’t believe that she was gone, no matter how often he read those words, it didn’t make sense. That just wasn’t his CD, the woman who was a cop with all her body and soul and loved him with all her heart, but yet it was her handwriting, her words that felt like daggars in his heart. Trying to drown his sorrows with another glass of Vodka he didn’t notice how the door of the bar opened and a familiar woman walked into the Anchorside and approached him as she saw him sitting at the counter.

“Oh Nate.” Sitting down she sighed, knowing the significance of the day, it had been exactly one year ago and he never had gotten over it. Even though he never talked about it, never talked about her, the loss of the only woman he had ever loved, she knew that it still hurt him like it did on the first day and that this would probably haunt him forever. They all knew the story by now, the story of how his heart had been broken by one of their very own. Everybody was shocked about that and they all hadn’t been able to believe it but eventually just had accepted it and had gone on with their lives. Even Nate tried to do that the best he could, but ever since that day a year ago he had changed. He wasn’t the same man anymore and the anger and pain deep within him were evident to everybody who saw him.

Kicking back another shot he noticed the woman sit down next to him but didn’t even acknowledge her with as much as a ‘hello’ and just continued to fill glass after glass, hoping this would finally kick in and give him the oblivion he longed for so much. But then again forgetting was the last thing he wanted. Why else would he be cradling the paper in his hand after all if not to remember?

Seeing how he looked at it, Kate McCafferty decided to try again. Today she wasn’t his boss, she was a friend, mourning over the loss of a loved one together with him. “Is that the infamous note?” She asked and reached for it.

Nate just nodded and let her take it. After all Kate knew her longer than anybody else of them, maybe she would be able to make sense of all of this. If she really had loved him, how could she leave? Why couldn’t she trust him and confide in him and give him the chance to help her through whatever was bothering her so much?

For the first time Kate read the note CD had left Nate the day she disappeared. The same day she had received her resignition in the mail, no words of explanation though. Nate had told her about the note and that apparently she had been fed up with being a cop and ran, but he hadn’t ever showed the note to anyone. Probably because he had felt so humiliated by it. Right now he probably was too drunk to care. She couldn’t believe it either, this just wasn’t like CD, and she thought she knew her as if she was her own daughter. Reading over it a second time it finally sank in though and she understood and jumped up from the barstool in utter shock because she couldn’t believe what she was reading there. “OH MY GOD!”

I'm curious who here reads what Nate read and who reads what Kate read... okay enough hints. :D

OK, OK, I guess I have to try really hard here to figure this out, so Cat will post! I've read that note part probably a dozen times, and the only thing I can come up with is that CD was held hostage or kidnapped or something, and she was trying to tell Nate that through the note (Between the Lines LOL). She says that she has to get away from being a cop, she hopes he doesn't have revenge on his mind, and to not try to find her. But then she says that she's going to take a plane. So, hmmm, am I right? :) :wave:

“Yeah I know.” Nate spoke up. “She left this huge void, and no matter what you try to squeeze in there, no matter how often you try, and no matter how hard you try, that void just won’t fill. And all she left is that goddamn note! After all we’ve been through together, you’d think she’d at least call to tell me where she is, write me a letter, email, anything. But none of that. So here I am, one year later, one year older, but not wiser. I try to hate her but I can’t. I still love her with all my heart, but yet I just want to forget what she’s done to me.” With that he snatched the note back again and got a lighter out of his pocket. “Gimme that, it’s time to burn that goddamn thing.”

“Shut the **** up Nate!” Not able to believe she had just uttered those words Kate snatched the note back from him again, trying to save whatever might still be on it. “Have you ever REALLY read this?” She held it right into his face.

“I read it so often that I know it by heart.” He whispered and looked down.

“Nate oh my god, this note isn’t at all what it seems to be! She didn’t do anything to you, someone did something to her, the only question now is what did they do and where is she now? And I pray to god that she’s still alive!” Being a cop for so many years already she knew how slim the chances were after a whole year.

“What?” Now Nate jumped up from his barstool. “What the hell are you talking about? How dare you say those things?”

But Kate didn’t answer, she got out her cellphone and ordered her whole squad into the division as she dragged Nate along with her, back across the street even though he had taken the day off.

“What’s going on?” Just having gotten back from a case Jinny and Magda were there already and Jinny saw that something was terribly wrong, just by the way Kate was looking at them. For as long as she knew her, she thought she hadn’t ever seen her this worried before.

The first thing Kate did was making a magnified copy of the note and then she immediately bagged it and handed it to Raina who had walked in as well meanwhile. “I need you to run this to crimelab, there might be fingerprints on it if we’re lucky.” With that she put the copy up and looked at her inspectors and officers. “CD has been taken hostage.”

“WHAT?”They all yelled, Nate being the loudest one of them.

“When?” Magda asked surprised, she hadn’t heard a single word about CD in a year and she didn’t even think about her anymore.

“A year ago.” Kate sighed and pointed at the note.

Frowning they all read it but didn’t see anything. “Isn’t that the note she left when she went away?” Jinny asked.

Sighing Kate pointed it out to them and read just the first words of each line while pointing at them. “Nate, Help Me Liz Friends Imprisioned Me As Revenge Please Hurry I’m Scared Love forever, CD.”

okay that was well no words can explain. I love this fic. I don't know who to feel more sorry for Nate or CD. I mean Nate this whole time with is broken heart, becasue CD left him, or CD becasue she has been waiting for him to save her. And he never cought on no matter how manytimes he read the note. Hell he even had it memorized. I mean even though I am NO cop, and didn't ketch onto what it said, I would think I cop would notice that every first line she wrote had a capital litter, and that should have been the first clue that something was up. Yet then again he was so broken hearted that he didn't notice all that. That alone is gonna tear him up even more. LOL Okay....as I said this is really a great fic....Cat you should really get your ass back here, and post. To bad if, you are tired LOL j/k. anyway MORE NOW!

Well, I WAS close! :D I did have the right idea, just I didn't figure it out the way you wanted me to. I did noticed that the first letter of every line was capitalized, but dummy me, I thought it was just a computer blip thing or something! LOL. I should have thought of that. Oh, well. I was around 3 year olds all day, I guess my mind atrophied! ;) :lol:

That was SOOOOOOOOOO AMAZING!!!!! This is so cool! I love this fic, and I really hope that CD is still alive! Poor Nate, thinking all this time that she didn't love him anymore, and even poorer CD, for waiting all this time, hoping that Nate would figure it out. After a few weeks, she must have realized that Nate hadn't figured it out, wouldn't come to save her, and she must also have felt so terrible, knowing that Nate thought she had left him. Plus, she couldn't have any contact with him! :( Please post more soon!

“how can ypu be sure that isn’t just a coincidence?” Magda asked while the others still stared at the note in utter disbelief and Nate sank down to his knees, crying like he hadn’t ever done before.

“How could I not have seen that? Oh god CD!” For the first time since he had given up on faith he did something he thought he’d never do again and started to pray. “Please let her be okay, please!” He begged. “Take my life, take my everything, but let CD be okay.”

But all of them knew how slim the chances were to ever find her again, alive even. Still they all knew what would be their very first priority from now on until they would accomplish this task and bring CD back where she belonged.

“RAINA, CRIME LAB, NOW!” Kate yelled and Raina was running out of the door already, even before she had the chance to finish her sentence. “Magda, archives! I want every case Liz Rue ever worked on, any name related to her! We need to know who those friends are!”

Nodding Magda left to get the required information and Nate looked at his boss helplessly. “I have to find her! I’ll go to Liz appartment and...”

But Kate shut him up. “There are new tenants in it by now most likely, you won’t have much luck there.” Looking at Jinny she gave them their assignment for now. “Jinny, I want you to take him home, sober him up as good as you can. I guess you still remember how to do that best. And while you’re doing that find out if somebody else lives in Liz appartment. If not you might have a chance there.”

“Even if there are new tenants cap, we have to search it! Maybe she hid something somewhere...” It was the only thing Nate could think of right now, not that he was able to think much at all. The only thing that was racing through his brain right now was that the woman he loved was in danger, and he wasn’t there to help her and protect her. He failed at everything that was important to him. The love of his life, his partner had needed his help and he hadn’t even seen her cry for help.

Jinny nodded in agreement to that, but she knew that there was another possibility as well. One that neither of them even wanted to consider, and one that she couldn’t even say out loud. “What if she...”

“... isn’t?” Kate concluded the question, knowing that she had to, even though she couldn’t say the words CD and dead in the same sentence either. “Then we still won’t rest until we find her, is that clear?”

Everybody who was still there nodded and now Jinny was the one who put her hand on Nate’s shoulder. “Come on now. You need a long icecold shower and a lot of hot strong black coffee.”

“CD, I promise you, wherever you are, I’ll find you, no matter what it takes!” He said more to himself than to anybody else.

As soon as Jinny had left with Nate, Kate disappeared into her office and hit the phone. She called up all her contacts in FBI, CIA, Interpol and whatever else came to her mind, asking if there had been any solved kidnappings the last year and describing them what had happened. Unfortunatley though she couldn’t find the smallest piece of good news. It did help though, in so far that she soon had a big joint investigation taskforce under her command and every cop nationwide and even worldwide got informed about the case with a picture of CD, so that should anything come up, Kate and her gang would be the first ones to hear about it.

After last night I don't think I could ever drink again puke: ...but I'll still bring the keg! LMAO I can see me driving to Indiana with a keg strapped to the top of my car. :D

The first official meeting was scheduled for that evening and when Kate walked out of her office she saw the bullpen crowded with everybody who wanted to help. Her whole Division was there, the core crew standing around Nate’s desk, giving him moral support as he was dangerously close to breaking down again. Jinny had managed to sober him up again somewhat and calm him down enough to keep his head straight, or at least as straight as it could be under these circumstances.

Raina was waving with the crime scene report as soon as she saw Kate and Magda was almost comepletely covered by the biggest stack of files Kate had ever seen.

A wall had been set up, a very pretty picture of CD in the middle of it, and her letter right next to it, the first words highlighted and some more notes next to it, since they tried to decipher more of it, like the part where it said that she didn’t know where she was going. It wasn’t much but anything that could help them was gathered there. On that wall they would put any kind of evidences they would find. Soon hopefully.

There also were some familiar faces Kate hadn’t expected to see, but wasn’t overly surprised to see them either. Frank Perez was standing right next to Simon, the snitch CD helped out when he had been accused of killing her first partner Dick. But she had known he was innocent and wouldn’t accept to see him behind bars for something he hadn’t done. Frank was with the FBI meanwhile and had helped them on that case and others before that one as well. On his other side a very pregnant african-american woman was sitting in front of what used to be her desk when she still worked at the division, CD’s second partner, Angela Reide. Behind Jinny she could see her brother Casey with his partner. Then there were Al DeLuca and Peter Torriani and it went on and on, wherever she looked.

Recognizing a lot of familiar faces Kate realized she was wasting time by trying to remember all of them. “Alright everybody, I assume everybody here knows what’s going on and why they’re here. So if anybody has any good news at all, now’s the time to speak up and make our day.”

Unfortunately the last time all of them had heard about CD was right before they decided to help bringing her back.

“Nothing?” Kate asked when no one said a word. “Nothing at all?”

They shook their heads and all of them realized just how hopeless this case seemed to be. It had been over a year ago since somebody talked to CD and saw her last. Everybody felt incredibly sorry for Nate when they saw tears welling up in his eyes, even though he tried to fight them, but he didn’t succeed.

When Kate saw it she sighed. “Alright, let’s hear what we got.” She motioned towards Raina.

When Kate saw it she sighed. “Alright, let’s hear what we got.” She motioned towards Raina.

“Not too much unfortunately. They found an awful amount of Nate’s prints all over the paper, some of your own, but also a couple of CD’s. So that means she wrote the note herself.” Raina concluded. “No unusual substances, normal ink, normal paper. The letter is no help.”

“Thank you Raina.” Kate nodded and looked at another inspector. “Magda?”

“Liz’ friends... well we’re still on that. We sorted out everybody who died or went to jail before CD disappeared. Then we have three more piles. Died within the past year, got arrested last year, and running free.” With that she put her hand on the stack that seemed like a wall in front of her.

Jinny picked up there. “We already sent patrols to the last known addresses of the deceased and imprisioned ones. That was quite a list as well, so they’re not done yet but keep us informed constantly. Furthermore Nate, Casey and I have been to Liz Rue’s former appartment. A young Mexican family is living there now. They allowed us to search everything and we turned every nook and every corner upside down couldn’t come up with anything though.”

“Good work so far.” Kate nodded and pointed at the huge stack. “You know what’s to do. I want you to talk to each and every of them! Find out whatever you can.” As soon as she had said that everybody grabbed a handful of the files, even Angela. But Kate put her hand down at that. “Putting your obvious condition in consideration here I think it’d be best if you stay here with me and act as the main co-ordinator on the phone.”

“Alright Captain.” Angela agreed and set herself up at a desk right away.

“Furthermore I suggest we inform the media, set up an 1-800 number.” She looked at Angela again. “Can you do that?”

“I’m on it.” Right away Angela got on the phone so they could get started.

The meeting ended and everybody left to start questioning the people who knew Liz at some point in her life and hopefully were the friends who wanted revenge for her death. Because if those certain friends weren’t among the people in the files they were nowhere and didn’t even have the slightest hint.

Oh, NO! :( Please let there be a clue!!!!! There has to be! B/c Nate has to get his honeybun back! Post more soon!
