ABlairican Pie 03-27-2004, 07:53 PM The beginning of the 80's was a decade of coldness and tension in the world:
America was held spellbound by the Iran hostage crisis while morale had hit bottom towards its leaders. The deadlock over the fate of the Americans held at the embassy in Tehran continued well into the new year as that nation was held in the grip of an Islamic revolution and its malevolent mullah, the Ayatollah Khomeini. The inability of President Carter to bring about their safe return soured people's confidence in his leadership abilities.
The Cold War was going full throttle as the country locked horns with Moscow over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. American had lent military support to the mujaheedin freedom fighters--a decision it would later regret
Disco had been symbolically destroyed the summer before at Comiskey Field.
Prog rock bands were dinosaurs facing extinction in the onslaught of newer bands caught up in the new wave explosion. For them, the 80's were a time of creative opportunity.
If you missed the previous threads here they are.

ABlairican Pie 03-27-2004, 07:56 PM The first album of the new year was released January 1, 1980 by a band that did not feel the need to concede to the new wave, but a more permanent wave that resisted trends. Rush released
Permanent Waves. Rush knew that it could not continue to be a progressive band without actually progressing and sounding fresh for the times. Record company bigwigs finally stood up and took notice of them. But before they could stuff Rush into their rock and roll hit sausage factory, they had to deal with honest lyrics such as these:
The Spirit of Radio
Begin the day with a friendly voice,
A companion unobtrusive
Plays the song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood.
Off on your way, hit the open road,
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers,
Undemanding contact in your happy solitude.
Chorus
Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted.
Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question of your honesty, yeah,
Your honesty.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music,
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity.
Chorus
For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall,
Concert hall
And echoes with the sounds of salesmen.
ABlairican Pie 03-27-2004, 07:58 PM Geddy Lee
Freewill
There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.
A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"The stars aren't aligned,
Or the gods are malign..."
Blame is better to give than receive.
Chorus
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.
There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.
All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.
Chorus
Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.
Chorus
ABlairican Pie 03-27-2004, 07:59 PM Rush live 1980
As on previous Rush albums, one song would serve as a thematic centerpiece. The lyrics of the next song, actually the closing song, would serve as a warning and a wake-up call for all the trendy, fashionable new wave bands straddling the charts:
Natural Science
1. Tide Pools
When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline,
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy.
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society.
A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own.
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies.
Living in their pools,
They soon forget about the sea...
Wheels within wheels in a spiral array,
A pattern so grand and complex,
Time after time we lose sight of the way,
Our causes can't see their effects.
2. Hyperspace
A quantum leap forward
In time and in space,
The universe learned to expand.
The mess and the magic,
Triumphant and tragic,
A mechanized world out of hand.
Computerized clinic
For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band.
In their own image,
Their world is fashioned.
No wonder they don't understand.
3. Permanent Waves
Science, like nature,
Must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation.
Given the same
State of integrity,
It will surely serve us well.
Art as expression,
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations.
Given the same
State of integrity,
It will surely help us along.
The most endangered species,
The honest man,
Will still survive annihilation.
Forming a world
State of integrity,
Sensitive, open and strong.
Wave after wave will flow with the tide, and bury the world as it does.
Tide after tide will flow and recede, leaving life to go on as it was...

Entre Nous
We are secrets to each other
Each one's life a novel
No-one else has read.
Even joined in bonds of love,
We're linked to one another
By such slender threads.
We are planets to each other,
Drifting in our orbits
To a brief eclipse.
Each of us a world apart,
Alone and yet together,
Like two passing ships.
Chorus
Just between us,
I think it's time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes fear to show.
Just between us,
I think it's time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room for you and I to grow.
We are strangers to each other,
Full of sliding panels,
An illusion show.
Acting well-rehearsed routines
Or playing from the heart?
It's hard for one to know.
Chorus
We are islands to each other,
Building hopeful bridges
On a troubled sea.
Some are burned or swept away,
Some we would not choose,
But we're not always free.
Chorus
Cactus Jack 03-27-2004, 08:34 PM DEVO hit big in 1980 again
With a little song called...WHIP IT!!!
Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your Momma's back
When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's goin' wrong
You must whip it
Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Whip it good
When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets their way
Until they whip it
I say, whip it
Whip it good
I say, whip it
Whip it good
---- Instrumental Interlude ----
Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your Momma's back
When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's goin' wrong
You must whip it
Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
Whip it good

Dean Winchester 03-27-2004, 08:48 PM Also in 1980, a 22 year old from Minneapolis who had scored some reasonable success on the pop and r&b charts the previous year unleashed his new sound on us that year. A hybrid form of music that successfully mixed funk, rock, dance and soul music... A great record that was only a sign of what was to come for the rest of the 1980's.
His name was (and since, 2000, is again) Prince, and he is funky.
The album? Dirty Mind

Steve M. 03-27-2004, 09:40 PM There wasn't a worse decade in the rock and roll era than the eighties. Bananarama, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Madonna, Animotion, Huey Lewis and the News, and an assortment of hair-metal bands. . . I could go on.
Looking back, you can summarize how depressingly boring the eighties were when you see what was at the top of the Billboard singles charts in the first week of January 1980 and in the last week of December 1989. The decade's first number-one single was "Babe Please Don't Go" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and its last was "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins. In with a yawn, out with a yawn. And a lot of yawning in between.

Back after a five-year hiatus and on a new record label (Geffen), John Lennon released the album Double Fantasy with his wife, Yoko Ono on November 17, 1980.
Along with being a hit among the masses, it was also Lennon's biggest critical success since 1971's Imagine.
The album included seven songs by Lennon and seven songs by Ono:
Side One:
(Just Like) Starting Over (Lennon)
Kiss, Kiss, Kiss (Ono)
Cleanup Time (Lennon)
Give Me Something (Ono)
I'm Losing You (Lennon)
I'm Moving On (Ono)
Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) (Lennon)
Side Two:
Watching The Wheels (Lennon)
Yes, I'm Your Angel (Ono)
Woman (Lennon)
Beautiful Boys (Ono)
Dear Yoko (Lennon)
Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him (Ono)
Hard Times Are Over (Ono)
The future looked bright for John. For 1981, he planned a U.S. tour and a sequel to Double Fantasy entitled Milk And Honey.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono, 1980
Monday
December 8
1980
In the morning, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz arrives at the Dakota (the apartment where John, Yoko, and their five-year-old son, Sean live) for a photo session. The Lennons are heavily promoting Double Fantasy.
This is one of the many pictures taken that morning by Leibovitz:
Still in their apartment, the Lennons are interviewed by RKO Radio that afternoon. Most of this interview can be heard on the 2001 reissue of Milk And Honey.
At around 5 pm EST, the Lennons leave their apartment for a recording session at the Record Plant. They are to work on Yoko's song, "Walking On Thin Ice."
On the way to their car, John is asked for an autograph by a man holding a copy of Double Fantasy.
"John, will you sign this?" he asks.
"Sure, no problem," John replies as he signs the record cover with the man's pen (this moment is eerily captured in the chilling photo below).
"Is that all you want?" John asks the man. After several moments of silence, John asks again.
"Is that all you want?"
"Yes. Thank you, John."
At that point, John follows Yoko into the limo and they drive away.
Monday
December 8
1980
(continued)
At the studio, John and Yoko spend hours putting the finishing touches on her song, in which John plays guitar.
Hours pass. It's getting late. Instead of getting a bite to eat, the Lennons decide to go straight home.
The limo arrives outside the Dakota at about 10:50. Yoko gets out of the car first, followed by John, who is carrying a tape recorder and some cassettes.
Yoko passes the chubby guy with glasses John had signed an autograph for almost six hours before. "Hello," he says to her. John looks the man over.
After John passes him, the man steps back and pulls a .38 revolver out of his pocket. He goes into a combat stance.
"Mr. Lennon," he says.
As John begins to turn around, the man fires his gun. Two shots hit John in the back. The man fires three more shots, two of which enter John's shoulder. The other misses John, who staggers up the Dakota steps into the front lobby.
"I'm shot."
After moaning those words, John collapses.
Dakota doorman Jose Perdomo finds the shooter a few yards away, calmly reading a copy of J.D. Salinger's The Catcher In The Rye
"Do you know what you've done?" Perdomo shouts at him.
"I just shot John Lennon," he replies.
Meanwhile, back in the lobby, a frantic Yoko screams for someone to call for help. Her husband is bleeding heavily from his chest and is vomiting blood. He is awake, but barely.
Dakota security worker Jay Hastings presses an alarm button beneath his desk, which summons police.
*** ALERT *** SHOTS FIRED *** 1 WEST 72nd STREET ***
Officers Tony Palma and Herb Frauenberger are first at the scene. They find a man lying face down with a small woman standing over him crying. Palma turns the body over. He sees that the victim is badly injured and tells his partner, "Grab his legs and let's get him out of here!"
By the time they lay him in the back of a squad car, John loses all control over his limbs. As the car takes off, the driver, Officer James Moran, yells at John, "Do you know who you are?" John is unable to speak, but nods. The car runs the red lights on Colombus Avenue and speeds down Ninth Avenue into 58th Street, swinging into the entrance of Roosevelt Hospital.
The hospital's major trauma team is already alerted. John, rapidly fading, is carried to the emergency room. He has virtually no pulse. The first two bullets had both pierced a lung and passed through his chest. A third bullet had shattered his left shoulder bone, and a fourth had hit the same shoulder and ricocheted inside his chest, where it severed his aorta and windpipe. After an unsuccessful attempt at cardiac massage, a medical team of seven people labors to save John using every device and technique available. Nothing works. John is pronounced dead at 11:15 pm.
Pictured below: Yoko is ushered through the crowds and comforted by David Geffen
Howard Cosell broke the news on Monday Night Football, against his producers' wishes: "Yes, we have to say it. Remember, this is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the west side of New York City, the most famous, perhaps of all of the Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival."
Below: John's body is transferred to Bellevue City Morgue.

lol.
I grew up on Culture Club (and Kissing To Be Clever does not sound 10 years old, much less 22 years old) , Madonna, Duran Duran (sorry, their 1993 album finally brought them musical respect, it's okay to get over hating them because it's been about 18 years since they were last in Teen Beat. They grew and matured quite a bit once Warren Cucarullo joined the band), Bananarama (ok, they were cheesy, but wasn't part of the appeal that they were?), Huey Lewis (how did you not at least like him during the "Sports" era?) and the sort that he bashed. That was the music of my childhood. I'd rather listen to that than some of the seemingly overrated 60's and early 70's music that the artists were irrelevant by the time I got to know them.
Frankly, what about the 2000's scene is so much better about the 1980's? Hell, I'd even take Tiffany and Milli Vanilli over about 90% of what is hot today, and IMO, Tiffany and Vanilli was probably the worst music to come out of the 1980's.
Some of it was cheesy, but it was always fun, can we say the same about today's crap? Didn't think so

cheesy? yes. catchy as hell? yes!! Their Greatest Hits cd is definately one of those cd's that you don't skip a song.

Boy George still rules. Every gay guy I know in their early to mid 30's tells me how they finally felt someone they could identify with when he came along. Their first 2 albums are classics when it comes to pop music. Yes, very much "image" (which is why people hate MTV) but I don't see how anyone can resist the hookiness of Karma Chameleon or Do You Really Want To Hurt Me.

willing to bet you haven't heard anything after 1985 by them. 1993's Wedding Album and 1997's Medazzaland shows that they got better as they got older. Most of their "classic" 1981-1985 stuff was fluff, but they got so much better as they got older.

Huey Lewis and the News
he was great. Overplayed, but some great songs in the early part of his career. Heart And Soul and I Want A New Drug still rock 20 years later. He freefalled after the Sports album, but he still has that one classic album to his name for the rest of his life.
I think the problem is, you probably don't like "pop" music. If you were expecting these acts to be Led Zeppelin's or The Stones of the 1980's, then you set yourself up for a fall because that was not the audience they were aiming to be. I am a pop fan, I have no shame in admitting it. And I have all the artists in question in my cd collection and I'm not ashamed about any of them. Just about every "80's kid" I know (I was born in the late 70's but my older sister hooked me on MTV at a very young age) has fond memories of those artists.

such a great album by both Lennon and Ono, the only one of his albums that I really love (I like Imagine and Plastic Ono Band too, but I'm just not that big a fan of pre-1975 music. I agree most of it is classic but I just never can "get into it" as I can stuff after 75). This album showed that he could've gone on to some great 80's and 90's music had he had the chance to live. I know it goes against the grain to admit to liking Yoko, but I think she carried on the torch after this album and most of her material since 1980 has been stellar.

I think if you had grown up in the 1980's you'd think differently about it. This was the decade that I spent most of my school years in. The decade I became a teenager and entered High School. So this is all the stuff that I love and it brings back so many childhood memories.
It's probably harder for you to relate to the artists you mentioned because you were an adult by the time they hit their peak. Just like it's hard for me to relate to anything before 1974, because I didn't exist yet.
The 1980's was meant to be fun and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. It was the decade where everyone finally relaxed and started enjoying life again after all the drama of the 1960's and 1970's.

good post, I agree completely. If you were 21 when Wham was popular, you're probably not appropriate for the thread unless you liked them. I mean, I know that 15 years down the road, today's 8 year olds will be 23 years olds that are going to reminisce about the "good ol' days" of Britney and Justin, and I'll probably roll my eyes at them like Steve rolls his eyes at us. But I'd be more respectful because I'd realize that these future-20somethings grew up with those people, much like I'd grown up with Madonna, Prince, Janet, etc..., and like how others grew up on Beatles, Stones and Elvis before me.
Hell, I am HAPPY we're now on the 1980's on this thread. I admit there's great music before 1975, but I don't get into it as well as anything post-75. Hell, Bowie is my favorite male artist, but I could never get into Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory as easily as I could a post-75 album like Station To Station or Scary Monsters. Even with Elton John, I will confess to being able to "get into" his latter stuff more than his classic material. Not to say there wasn't some songs before then that were great, but I didn't live through it (well, i didn't live through late 70's music either, but it was closer to what I "knew" in my life). I can respect The Beatles and Zeppelin and the sort, and will never badmouth them, even tho they were well before my time, so I could never truly appreciate the works the way someone did who lived it. Why can't the same people show respect to those of us who GREW UP on Culture Club etc... just because they were already grown up and the pop stars of the 1980's were cheesy to them just like many of todays stars look cheesy to todays 20-somethings.
the 80's was the music from when I was a kid. Pretty much anyone between 23-35 has nostalgia for this music even if they don't want to admit it.
ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 05:08 PM Gary Numan scored big in 1980 with The Pleasure Principle, released late the previous year, which featured the hit "Cars." His choice of instrument, the synthesizer, was quickly replacing guitars among the new wave crowd.
Cars
Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It's the only way to live
In cars
Here in my car
I can only receive
I can listen to you
It keeps me stable for nights
In cars
Here in my car
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please?
If I open my door
In cars
Here in my car
I know I've started to think
About leaving tonight
Although nothing seems right
In cars
Metal
We're in the building where they make us grow
And I'm frightened by the liquid engineers
Like you
My Mallory heart is sure to fail
I could crawl around the floor just like I'm real
Like you
The sound of metal I want to be you
I could learn to be a man
Like you
Plug me in and turn me on
Oh everything is moving
I need my treatment it's tomorrow they send me
Singing "I am an American"
Do you?
Picture this if they could make the change
I'd love to pull the wires from the wall
Did you?
And who are you and how can I try?
Here inside I like metal
In you
All I know is no one dies
I'm still confusing love with need
ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 05:17 PM Complex
They won't come back
You know it's always the same
And they're sure to forget
Saying "everyone lies"
So I'm down to this
I'm down to walking on air
And you're here by my side
With all your waving and smiles
Please keep them away
Don't let them touch me
Please don't let them lie
Don't let them see me
M.E.
And M.E. I eat dust
We're all so run down
I'd call it my death
But I'll only fade away
And I hate to fade alone
Now there's only M.E.
We were so sure
We were so wrong
Now it's over
But there's no one left to see
And there's no one left to die
There's only M.E.
Why should I care
Why should I try
Oh no, oh no
I turned off the pain
Like I turned off you all

Cars
Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It's the only way to live
In cars
Here in my car
I can only receive
I can listen to you
It keeps me stable for nights
In cars
Here in my car
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please?
If I open my door
In cars
Here in my car
I know I've started to think
About leaving tonight
Although nothing seems right
In cars

Another One Bites the Dust
Another One Bites the Dust
Let's go
Steve walks warily down the street
With the brim pulled way down low
Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready
Are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat, yeeeeah
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust, hey
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
How do you think I'm going to get along
Without you, when you're gone
You took me for everything that I had
And kicked me out on my own
Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust, hey
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
---- Instrumental Interlude ----
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust, hey, hey
Another one bites the dust, heeeeeey
There are plenty of ways you can hurt a man
And bring him to the ground
You can beat him
You can cheat him
you can treat him bad and leave him
When he's down, yeah
But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you
I'm standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating the sound of the beat
Oooooh, yeah
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone
And another one gone
Another one bites the dust, hey
Hey, I'm gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

But Freddie Mercury sported a smart butch look, and the sound had ventured into a more palatable pop-friendly direction away from their pomp and circumstance of the 70's.

ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 05:36 PM One of the most memorable songs of The Game was:
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
This thing called love I just can't handle it
This thing called love I must get round to it
I ain't ready
Crazy little thing called love
This thing (this thing) called love (called love)
It cries (like a baby)
In a cradle all night
It swings (woo woo)
It jives (woo woo)
It shakes all over like a jelly fish
I kinda like it
Crazy little thing called love
There goes my baby
She knows how to Rock'n'Roll
She drives my crazy
She gives me hot and cold fever
Then she leaves me in a cool cool sweat
I gotta be cool relax get hip!
Get on my track's
Take a back seat
Hitch hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
Until I'm ready
Crazy little thing called love
I gotta be cool relax get hip!
Get on my track's
Take a back seat

And take a long ride on my motor bike

ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 05:48 PM Freedom of Choice was the album that broke Devo into the mainstream with the previously-mentioned "Whip It."
Freedom Of Choice
A victim of collision on the open sea
Nobody ever said that life was free
Sank, swam, go down with the ship
But use your freedom of choice
I’ll say it again in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Your freedom of choice
In ancient rome there was a poem
About a dog who found two bones
He picked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
He dropped dead
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice!
Then if you got it you don’t want it
Seems to be the rule of thumb
Don’t be tricked by what you see
You got two ways to go
I’ll say it again in the land of the free
Use your freedom of choice
Freedom of choice
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom of choice!
In ancient Rome
There was a poem
About a dog
Who found two bones
He picked at one
He licked the other
He went in circles
He dropped dead
Freedom of choice
Is what you got
Freedom from choice
Is what you want
(repeat)
Girl U Want
She sings from somewhere you can’t see
She sits in the top of the greenest tree
She sends out an aroma of undefined love
It drips on down in a mist from above
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
You hear her calling everywhere you turn
You know you’re headed for the pleasure burn
But the words get stuck on the tip of your tongue
She’s the real thing but you knew it all along
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
Look at you with your mouth watering
Look at you with your mind reeling
Why don’t we just admit it’s all over
Just the girl u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She sings from somewhere you can’t see
She sits in the top of the greenest tree
She sends out an aroma of undefined lust
It drips on down in a mist from above
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
Look at you with your mouth watering
Look at you with your mind spinnin’
Why don’t we just admit it’s all over
Just the girl u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl
That u want
She’s just the girl, just the girl

Comin' Up
You want a love to last forever
One that will never fade away
I want to help you with your problem
Stick around I say
Coming Up, coming up, yeah
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up, I say
You want a friend you can rely on
One who will never fade away
And if you're searching for an answer
Stick around, I say
Coming Up, coming up
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up, yeah
You want some peace and understanding
So everybody can be free
I know that we can get together
We can make it, stick with me
It's coming up, coming up
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up for you and me
Coming Up, coming up, I say
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up, I feel it in my bones
You want a better kind of future
One that everyone can share
You're not alone, we all could use it
Stick around, we're nearly there
Coming Up, coming up everywhere
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up for all to share
Coming up, yeah
Coming up, anyway
Coming up, like a flower
Coming up

Don't Ask Me Why
(Joel)
All the waiters in your grand cafe
Leave their tables when you blink
Every dog must have his everyday
Every drunk must have his drink
Don't wait for answers
Just take your chances
Don't ask me why
All your life you had to stand in line
Still you’re standing on your feet
All you choices made you change your mind
Now your calendar's complete
Don't wait for answers
Just take your chances
Don't ask me why
You can say the human heart
Is only make-believe
And I am only fighting fire with fire
But you are still a victim
Of the accidents you leave
As sure as I'm a victim of desire
All the servants in your new hotel
Throw their roses at your feet
Fool them all but baby I can tell
You're no stranger to the street
Don't ask for favors
Don’t talk to strangers
Don't ask me why
Yesterday you were an only child
Now your ghosts have gone away
You can kill them in the classic style
Now you, "parlez vous francais"
Don't look for answers
You took your chances
Don't ask my why
Don't ask me why
Dean Winchester 03-28-2004, 06:15 PM Ashes To Ashes
------------------------------------------------------------
(Bowie)
Do you remember a guy that's been
In such an early song
I've heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh no, don't say it's true
They got a message from the Action Man
I'm happy, hope you're happy too
I've loved all I've needed to love
Sordid details following
The shrieking of nothing is killing me
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis
And I ain't got no money and I ain't got no
Hair
But the planet is glowing
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Hung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
Time and again I tell myself
I'll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh no, not again
I'm stuck with a valuable friend
I'm happy hope you're happy too
One flash of light but no smoking pistol
I've never done good things
I've never done bad things
I've never did anything out of the blue
I want an axe to break the ice
I want to come down right now
Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Hung out in heaven's high
Hitting an all-time low
My mother said to get things done
You'd better not mess with Major Tom
ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 06:16 PM On February 21, 1980, tragedy struck AC/DC when, after a night of drinking with a buddy, Bon Scott decided to sleep off his buzz in his car. His buddy stopped and gave him a blanket for the night. To everyone's horror, the next morning when he was found, he was discovered to have died during the night after being asphyxiated by his own vomit. The band was in shock and turmoil. Just as success had opened up for them with "Highway to Hell", their charismatic lead singer was gone. What were they to do? Pack it all up and go home? Something told them no--they had to move forward. Bon would have wanted it that way.

Teenage Wildlife
--------------------------------------------------------------
(Bowie)
How come you only want tomorrow
With its promise of something hard to do
A real life adventure worth more than
Pieces of gold
Blue skies above and
Sun on your arms strength in your stride
And hope in those squeaky clean eyes
You'll get chilly receptions everywhere you
Go
Blinded with desire guess the season is on
So you train by shadow boxing, search for
The truth
But it's all used up
You break open your million dollar weapon
Still you push your luck
A broken nosed mogul are you
One of the new wave boys
Same old thing in brand new drag
Comes sweeping into view
As ugly as a teenage millionaire
Pretending it's a whizz kid world
And you'll take me aside
And say
David, what shall I do?
They wait for me in the hallway
I'll say don't ask me I don't know any
Hallways
But they move in numbers and
They've got me in a corner
I feel like a group of one
They can't do this to me
I'm not some piece of teenage wildlife
Those midwives to history put on their
Bloody robes
The word is that the hunted one is out there
On his own
You're alone for maybe the last time
And you breathe for a long time
Then you howl like a wolf in a trap
And you daren't look behind
You to fall to the ground like a leaf from the
Tree
And look up one time at that vast blue sky
Scream out aloud as they shooece of teenage wildlife
I'm not a piece of teenage wildlife
And no one will have seen and no one will
Confess
Fingerprints will prove that you coudn't pass
The test
There'll be others on the line filing past
Who'll whisper low
I miss you he had to go
Each to his own
Just another piece of teenage wildlife

ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 06:22 PM Ride On
It's another lonely evening
And another lonely town
But I ain't too young to worry
And I ain't too old to cry
When a woman gets me down
Got another empty bottle
And another empty bed
Ain't too young to admit it
And I'm not too old to lie
I'm just another empty head
That's why I'm lonely
I'm so lonely
But I know what I'm gonna do -
I'm gonna ride on
Ride on
Ride on, standing on the edge of the road
Ride on, thumb in the air
Ride on, one of these days I'm gonna
Ride on, change my evil ways
Till then I'll just keep dragging on
Broke another promise
And I broke another heart
But I ain't too young to realize
That I ain't too old to try
Try to get back to the start
And it's another red light nightmare
Another red light street
And I ain't too old to hurry
Cause I ain't too old to die
But I sure am hard to beat
But I'm lonely
Lord I'm lonely
What am I gonna do -
Ride on
Ride on, got myself a one-way ticket
Ride on
Ride on, going the wrong way
Ride on, gonna change my evil ways
Ride on, one of these days
One of these days
Ride on
Ride on
I'm gonna ride on
Ride on, looking for a truck
Ride on
Ride on, keep on riding
Riding on and on and on
In October, 1980, U2 released their debut album, Boy. The record is produced by Steve Lillywhite. It would peak at number 52 in the British charts.
"Boy was a retrospective of U2 over two years - the end of our adolescence. What we were looking for in Boy was a sort of cinema sound, panavision - really textured and big, like a huge screen in a cinema." --Bono
I Will Follow
(Bono/Clayton/Edge/Mullen)
I was on the outside when you said
You needed me
I was looking at myself
I was blind, I could not see.
A boy tries hard to be a man
His mother takes him by the hand
If he stops to think, he starts to cry
Oh why?
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.
I was on the inside
When they pulled the four walls down
I was looking through the window
I was lost, I am found.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.
Your eyes make a circle
I see you when I go in there
Your eyes, your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
If you walk away, walk away
I walk away, walk away
I will follow.
I will follow.

Dean Winchester 03-28-2004, 06:35 PM 1980 was a watershed year in which a few "pop stars" showed they could rock with the best of them after seeing Blondie and Pat Benatar explode onto the scene
http://www.vintage.com/Pictures/Albumimg/A0041434.jpg
Linda Ronstadt's "Mad Love" was a total about-face from her 70's country-rock albums. Here, Linda actually had a punk rock backup band, AND IT WORKS! I can just imagine how shocking How Do I Make You must've sounded when it came out in early 1980
http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/~gonohon/124-2412_IMG1.JPG
not one to allow the death of disco to murder her career like it did many other disco stars. In 1980, Donna Summer moved to a new label, and came out with a whole new sound. Sure there were a few traces of disco on songs like Looking Up and Who Do You Think You're Fooling, but the majority of "The Wanderer" was rock and roll driven. "Cold Love" would've been a smash had radio, both rock and top 40, had known what to do with it, it was too un-Donna for top 40 radio, and rock stations weren't about to play one of the biggest stars of the disco era.
Both cd's are well worth checking out if you like to see what happens when artists expand their horizons and try new things
ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 06:36 PM Below is a shot from David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" video.
Scary Monsters
She had an horror of rooms she was tired you can't hide beat
When I looked in her eyes they were blue but nobody home
Well she could've been a killer if she didn't walk the way she do, and she do
She opened strange doors that we'd never close again
She began to wail jealousies scream
Waiting at the lights know what I mean
Scary monsters, super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
Scary monsters, super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
She asked me to stay and I stole her room
She asked for my love and I gave her a dangerous mind
Now she's stupid in the street and she can't socialise
Well I love the little girl and I'll love her till the day she dies
She wails
Jimmy's guitar sound jealousies scream
Waiting at the lights know what I mean
Scary monsters, super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
Scary monsters, super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
Scary monsters, super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
Scary monsters, and super creeps
Keeps me running, running scared
Oh oh woh-oh
Oh, oh-oh-oh oh
Oh oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Fashion
There's a brand new dance but I don't know its name
That people from bad homes do again and again
It's big and it's bland full of tension and fear
They do it over there but we don't do it here
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad and we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
There's a brand new talk, but it's not very clear
Oh bop
That people from good homes are talking this year
Oh bop, fashion
It's loud and tasteless and I've heard it before
Oh bop
You shout it while you're dancing on the ole dance
floor
Oh bop, fashion
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Right
Fashion!
We are the goon squad and we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
La-la la la la la la-la
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do

Don't Stand So Close To Me
(Sting)
Young teacher, the subject
Of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be
Inside her there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking - she's so close now
This girl is half his age
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabakov
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
(Please don't stand so close to me)
(Repeat to fade)

Dean Winchester 03-28-2004, 06:52 PM Kim Carnes also had her breakthrough album of 1980. One of the most underrated artists of the 1980's, even tho 1981's Bette Davis Eyes was one of the most overplayed songs of the decade.
This album featured the top 10 hit "More Love"

ABlairican Pie 03-28-2004, 06:57 PM Paul Hewson felt his life was going nowhere after the devastating death of his mother. But one thing that lifted his spirits was the exciting new punk rock that was exploding across the waters from his home in Dublin. The London upstarts showed you didn't need to be a musical genius to create great music. So he decided to join a band with his schoolmates Dave, Larry, and Adam. He and Dave chose neighborhood nicknames as their stage names, and the four began to perform. It was actually Larry who announced he was putting a band together. Larry had also lost his mother under similar circumstances. Teachers and neighbors were impressed with the passion the boys played, and though they did not play very professionally (like their cover of "Show Me the Way" by Peter Frampton in loal car parks), there was a dose of energy and enthusiasm to their performances. And it was a good thing that troublemaker Adam got into the band, because he was very close to being kicked out of school for offenses such as drinking coffee in class. There just might be a future for these boys, if not a temporary diversion from the day to day drudgery.
They went by a series of names such as Feedback, the Hype, an others before settling on a perfect name:
U2.
The original cover of U2's War (which can be seen on the previous page of this thread) was somehow deemed to be vaguely child pornographic in the U.S. and was replaced for North American release by the horrid substitute below.

I did grow up in the eighties, Magic Person! I began the decade as a high school freshman and ended it as a college graduate! Yes, there was great music in the decade - U2, the Alarm, Rank and File, Tracy Chapman, R.E.M. - but more often than not, the Top 40 was clogged by "synthesizer-oriented dance music" (the new euphemism for disco), MTV teen-popsters, and big-haired power balladeers.
And if there's a God up in heaven, the people responsible for that awful cover medley of "Baby I Love Your Way" and "Free Bird" (two songs that had a chord change or two in common and nothing else) will spend time in purgatory for it.

but explain what it is about todays top 40 music that is SO MUCH BETTER than what was popular 20 years ago? Yes, there's a few decent acts currently in the top 40, but more often than not, I'd rather listen to Tiffany and Milli Vanilli (IMO, the nadir of the 1980's) over most of the stuff people listen to currently.
Once again, I think it's that you dislike pop music. Duran Duran, Cyndi Lauper, etc... WERE NOT ROCK ARTISTS, but they were great pop artists. The 80's was the greatest time for POP music IMO. The rock of the 80's doesn't compare to what was out in the 60's and 70's, but in sheer terms of top 40 music, I think you could ever get better than 1982-1987.
Hell, the bubblegum alone was so much better. Compare how catchy and how well Bananarama and early Duran Duran holds up 20 years later... and then compare that to David Cassidy, Donny Osmond, etc... from just a decade before. Duran and Bananarama was great pop music that even people who weren't around for it can enjoy, I don't know anyone outside of 40 year old housewives who still enjoy David Cassidy's music.
once again I'm glad we're on the 80's. You may hate it, but show respect to those of us who GREW UP on this stuff. I personally find a lot of the "oh so great classic rock" bands of the 60's and early 70's to be incredibly overrated (and I will always admit to preferring 80's Yes, Chicago, Elton John, to the 70's stuff... and I also prefer post-75 Bowie to Ziggy), but out of respect to the fans of those types of acts and who have a fondness for that music and grew up with it, I won't add my 2 negative 2 cents over the mention.

The young boy on the cover was a young friend of the members of the band named Radar. He did make an appearance on later recordings.

Magic Person? That's cute. Never been called that before. I like it. I was referring to childhood, not teens and college. In my opinion, when I see someone say "growing up", I think they are talking about being a kid, bed wetting, runny noses, playing in the dirt, that sort of thing. Because by the time you reach your teens, college, adulthood, you are most likely grown, or almost grown.
I was also basing it on the artists you mentioned previously. You were already an adult when they came out, which could possibly explain why you never "got them" because you weren't the target age they were going for at the time.
Just my opinion though.
Love always,
Magic Person

Well, Steve is a person who likes a certain era of music, and even though he is a big fan of the 60's and 70's he is is not a big fan of the pop kitsch that happened during either decade. Many critics of the 80's felt that a certain soul-lessness had crept in by the time MTV had come around. We all love the 80's, but we have to admit there was a sort of triumph of image over substance due to the rise of music video. Synth pop and over emphasis on fashion replaced the organic nature of guitar and naked honesty in music.
Everyone would do well to check out the lyrics to "Permanent Waves" by Rush--and buy the album.
Let's all remember to keep it civil on this thread, it's going great and I wouldn't want it closed on account of our differences in music.
ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 10:08 AM Let's all remember there was something both good and bad to like about the 80's--or not to like. It had great metal: Metallica and/or Poison, and great alternative: Jane's Addiction and/or the Thompson Twins. It all depends.

yea, but I happen to think a great deal of those "oh so great" 60's and early 70's rock bands that he, amongst many others, feel is the greatest music of all time is overrated and I could spend the rest of my life without being forced to listen to the music or even hearing the names said... again. But however I have enough respect not to go to the 60's thread and point out how I think every last Woodstock artist was overrated, or other stuff.
It's all about respecting opinions, I won't bash all that stuff because I know many people here are as passionate about that music 35 years on as I am of stuff I loved 10-20 years ago. So why does he keep coming in here bashing the 80's without stopping to think that if he was 19-20 when a group like Duran Duran was hot, he obviously is not going to have the same nostalgic memories something who was a kid or in their early teens when they were big had? I mean, except for Animotion (mostly a one hit wonder), I actually PREFER those acts he bashed (Madonna, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Bananarama, Huey Lewis, the hair metal bands) to the overhyped 60's and 70's bands he lauds. I don't care if others disagree with me, I am not always flaunting how much I hate 60's and early 70's music when other people are on a nostalgic trip towards the same music, so that's what makes us different.
Also, what is so wrong with pop kitsch, I personally like a lot of the 70's pop bands (i.e., Fleetwood Mac, Abba, The Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, etc...) better than the "classic rock" stuff from the same time, they didn't take themselves quite as seriously, and most of the music still sounds great.
I personally don't see how anyone can get excited when classic rock radio plays certain artists. It'd be like someone being excited when a Cosby Show rerun comes on (peek over at the "General Sitcoms" board to really understand this analogy) to actually be "YES!!! Freebird!!" or "wow, All Right Now is on, now THAT's a blast from the past" when those songs come on a classic rock station... because they play the same songs every 3 hours.
Enough time has elapsed that many of the 80's songs can be listened to on it's own merit without remembering the video (one of the things in the 90's that helped music like disco and Abba get more respect, is that 15-20 years later, enough time had passed that you could hear disco music and NOT think of the leisure suits, etc..). You can hear a song like Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper on an 80's radio station now, and go "damn, that was a good song!" instead of automatically thinking of Cyndi's hair at the time. Same applies with most of the 80's artists, it's been ages since MTV played their videos, yet people still like the music, maybe the music outlasted the image?

ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 10:17 PM Blondie released Autoamerican, which was a step away from they new wavey dance pop of her previous albums. In fact, it had a few surprises, a reggae-ish hit, "The Tide Is High", and a tune with the musical style right in the title--a new kind of style for many listeners:
Rapture
Toe to toe, dancing very close.
Body breathing almost comatose.
Wall to wall, people hypnotized.
And they're stepping lightly.
Hang each night, in rapture.
Back to back, sacroiliac.
Spineless movement and a wild attack.
Face to face, sightless solitude.
And it's finger popping.
Twenty four hour shopping in rapture.
Fab five freddy told me everybody's fly.
D.j. spinning, i said, "my, my."
Flash is fast, flash is cool.
Francois, c'est pas flashe non due.
And you don't stop, sure shot.
Go out to the parking lot.
And you get in your car and drive real far.
And you drive all night and then you see a light.
And it comes right down and it lands on the ground.
And out comes the man from mars.
And you try to run but he's got a gun.
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head.
And then you're in the man from mars.
You go out at night eating cars.
You eat cadillacs, lincolns too.
Mercurys and subaru.
And you don't stop.
You keep on eating cars.
Then when there's no more cars you go out at night
And eat up bars where the people meet.
Face to face.
Dance cheek to cheek.
One to one.
Man to man.
Dance toe to toe.
Don't move too slow 'cause the man from mars is through with cars.
He's eating bars.
Yeah, wall to wall.
Door to door.
Hall to hall.
He's gonna eat 'em all.
Rapture.
Be pure.
Take a tour through the sewer.
Don't strain your brain.
Paint a train.
You'll be singing in the rain.
Said don't stop to the punk rock.
Well now you see what you wanna be.
Just have your party on t.v.
'cause the man from mars won't eat up bars where the t.v's on.
And now he's gone back up to space where he won't have a hassle with the human race.
And you hip hop.
And you don't stop.
Just blast off, sure shot.
'cause the man from mars stopped eating cars
And eating bars
And now he only eats guitars.
Get up!

ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 10:32 PM U2 created a buzz around the clubs in Dublin and all over Ireland.
Soon they travelled across the sea to England and drew a great deal of praise there as well. Adam Clayton conceded his role as temporary manager when they were able to enlist a permanent manager by the name of Paul McGuinness, who needed a bit of convincing. After he saw their show, he was convinced of their power. He saw how Paul, or .Bono Vox, or Bono had complete attention of the audience.
Dave Evans (known as The Edge ) was a guitar player who was rather intimidated by his instrument. He wasn't a virtuoso. For him, it was a constant battle to come up with something new. But he was a fan of Tom Verlaine of Television and his idea of creating "tough music." He actually became an innovator on guitar and created a new sound of the 80's.
ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 10:55 PM In the late 70's a British punk singer by the name of William Broad and guitarist Tony James formed a band named after a 60's book about the rivalry between the Rockers and the Mods: Generation X. They formed a huge sensation in the British club scene, even attracting the attention of Mar Bolan, but eventually, the band fell under the control of Broad, who became known as a bigger name of the 80's as Billy Idol..

ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 11:20 PM Another band that was causing a sensation in Britain was The Cure, led by Robert Smith. They were called part of the "Goth" scene, due to their dark demeanor, but they were a band that found an audience among depressed and oppressed youth. In fact, their songs could have a joyous pop sound.
Boys Don't Cry
i would say i'm sorry
if i thought that it would change your mind
but i know that this time
i have said too much
been too unkind
i try to laugh about it
cover it all up with lies
i try and laugh about it
hiding the tears in my eyes
because boys don't cry
boys don't cry
i would break down at your feet
and beg forgiveness
plead with you
but i know that it's too late
and now there's nothing i can do
so i try to laugh about it
cover it all up with lies
i try to laugh about it
hiding the tears in my eyes
because boys don't cry
i would tell you
that i loved you
if i thought that you would stay
but i know that it's no use
that you've already
gone away
misjudged your limit
pushed you too far
took you for granted
i thought that you needed me more
now i would do most anything
to get you back by my side
but i just keep on laughing
hiding the tears in my eyes
because boys don't cry
boys don't cry
boys don't cry
The next song caused a lot of controversy several years later when it was re-released; it was not "anti-Semitic" as some had claimed, was actually based on a book, "The Stranger" by French Nobel Prize-winning author Albert Camus:
Killing an Arab
standing on a beach
with a gun in my hand
staring at the sea
staring at the sand
staring down the barrel
at the arab on the ground
I see his open mouth
but I hear no sound
i'm alive
and dead
and the stranger
killing an arab
i can turn and walk away
or i can fire the gun
staring at the sky
staring at the sun
whichever i choose
it amounts to the same
absolutely nothing
i'm alive
and dead
and the stranger
killing an arab
I feel the sliver jump, pow
smooth in my hand
staring at the sea
staring at the sand
staring at myself
reflected in the eyes of
the dead man on the beach
the dead man on the beach
i'm alive
and dead
and the stranger
killing an arab

the old ideal was getting such a bore

On March 26, 1980, Van Halen releases the album Women And Children First, which peaks at number 6 in the U.S. charts.
Lead track "And The Cradle Will Rock..." is the first Van Halen track to feature keyboards. The song becomes the only single released from the album. It tanks, peaking only at number 55.
ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 11:48 PM The Psychedelic Furs, fronted by lead singer Richard Butler, were another British band that found influences going back to similar "goth" inspirations as the Doors. Many late-70's/early 80's bands were not afraid to admit their psychedelic influences (hence the name).
Sister Europe
stupid on the steinway
so sick upon a steinway
the sailors drown
see them talk and see them drown
and see them drink and fall around
upon the floor
sister of mine, home again
sister of mine, home again
lonely in a crowded room
the radio plays out of tune
so silently
the radio upon the floor
is stupid it plays aznavour
so out of key
sister of mine
home again
sister of mine
home again
broken on a ship of fools
even dreams must fall to rules
so stupidly
words are all just useless sound
just like cards they fall around
and we will be
sister of mine
home again
sister of mine
home again
buy a car and watch it rust
sister see them fall to dust
they fall around
in another crowded room
paint me like the shirt i'm in
honestly
sister of mine
home again
sister of mine
home again
sister of mine
sister of mine
sister of mine
sister of mine
sister

ABlairican Pie 03-29-2004, 11:54 PM One of my favorite songs on Women and Children First:
Romeo Delight
I told her "Never in hell, no special reason"
Musta lied 'cause I ain't leavin'
We're in for a very long night
Heard a vicious rumor from your mama's tongue
You a desperate woman, need a man with a gun
High crime zone, in the city o' lights
Baby please, can't take it anymore
Ah! Baby please, can't take it anymore
I'm takin' whiskey to the party tonight
And I'm lookin' for somebody to squeeze. Uh! Uh!
I hear you're lookin' for somebody to fight
Baby, don't get uptight
Baby please
Wanna see my ID? Try to clip my wings
Don't have to show you proof o' anything
I know the law, friend
At the 'leventh hour I'm goin' back outside
Ooh, give it a try. I'm your last loose end
Baby please, I can't take it anymore
Oh, baby please, I can't take it anymore
I'm takin' whiskey to the party tonight
An' I'm lookin' for somebody to squeeze. Uh! Uh! Uh!
Hear you're lookin' for somebody to fight
Baby, don't get uptight
Baby please
Yeah!
(Guitar Solo)
Wow!
Oooh, baby
Oooh, baby
Oooh, baby
Uh feel my heartbeat
Feel my heartbeat
Feel my heartbeat
Oh, yeah
Feel my heartbeat
Feel my heartbeat (Ah)
Feel my heartbeat
Feel my heartbeat
Feel my heartbeat
Baby please, I can't take it anymore. Oh!
Yeah, baby please, (Ah-ha!) I can't uh take it anymore (Wow!)
Baby please, can't take it anymore
Whoa baby please, (Yeah) I can't take it anymore. Whoa!
I'm takin' whiskey to the party tonight
An' I'm lookin' for somebody to squeeze. Uh! Oh! Ow!
Hear you're lookin' for somebody to fight
Baby, don't get uptight
Baby please, yeah!
Baby please
John Mellencamp, who had moderate success the previous year with the single "I Need A Lover," releases his fourth record, Nothin' Matters And What If It Did in 1980.
The album's two singles do pretty well, with "This Time" hitting number 27 and "Ain't Even Done With The Night" peaking at number 17.
While definitely not Mellencamp's greatest work, the album certainly shows that the young man from Seymour, Indiana has promise. He doesn't have to wait long for his breakthrough album.
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 12:41 AM It's a good thing we started posting Van Halen, because I was getting depressed talking about all those other bands!
On October 10, 1980, Bruce Springsteen releases his fifth album, The River. The double-disc set includes twenty songs, many of which become Springsteen staples, including "Two Hearts," "Out In The Street," "Hungry Heart," and the title track.
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 10:07 PM Hungry Heart
Got a wife and kids in baltimore jack
I went out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don’t know where it’s flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going
Everybody’s got a hungry heart
Everybody’s got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody’s got a hungry heart
I met her in a kingstown bar
We fell in love I knew it had to end
We took what we had and we ripped it apart
Now here I am down in kingstone again
Everybody’s got a hungry heart...
Everybody needs a place to rest
Everybody wants to have a home
Don’t make no difference what nobody says
Ain’t nobody like to be alone
Everybody’s got a hungry heart...

ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 10:19 PM Yes, as AKA mentioned, Women and Children First was the first Van Halen album to feature keyboards. Can anyone guess where? That's right, those choppy distorted notes of the following song. It's an electric Wurlitzer piano played through Marshall amps and put through an MXR flanger. Many of Eddie's best ideas came through experimentation, or just "screwing around," as he put it.
...And the Cradle Will Rock
Ow
Oh yeah, get up
Ow! (Yeah)
Ow! Ow!
Well, they say it's kinda frightnin'
How this younger generation swings
You know it's more than just some new sensation
Well, the kid is into losin' sleep
And he don't come home for half the week
You know it's more than just an aggravation
And the cradle will rock
Yes the cradle, cradle will rock
And I say rock on. Uh! Rock on
And when some local kid gets down
They try an' drum him outta town
They say, "Ya coulda least faked it, boy"
Fake it, boy (Ooh, stranger, boy)
At an early age he hits the street
Winds up tired with who he meets
An' he's unemployed (Unemployed?) Ow!
And the cradle will rock. Ow!
And the cradle, the cradle will rock
An' I say rock on. Oh, say, rock on
(Guitar Solo)
Have you seen Junior's grades?
Ooh
Ow!
And when some local kid gets down
They try an' drum him outta town
They say, "Ya could've least faked it, boy. Faked it, boy"
And so an early age he hits the street
'N winds up tired with who he meets
An' he's unemployed. His folks are overjoyed
And the cradle will rock
Yes the cradle, cradle will rock
I say rock on. Hey! Rock on
Rock on. Rock on. Rock on
This ain't never been new, babe, child. Ow!
Rock on, wow! I said...
Rock on. Rock on. Oh, oh, oh
Rock on. Oh, ow, ah, ah, ah
Rock on. Rock on. Rock on
Everybody Wants Some!!

Yeah, ya stand in line ya got lost in a jet stream
Ooh, everybody wants some!

Everybody wants some!
How about you?
Ohhhh yeah
Ooooh yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

Everybody wants some! Hey, hey!
How 'bout you?

Below is Alex Van Halen live in 1980:
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 10:42 PM Meanwhile Ozzy was spending a lovely time in rock and roll exile, hiding out in his Beverly Hills hotel, shades drawn, take-out pizza,
X-rated cable, a fridge full of booze. Such was life for the disgraced former Black Sabbath frontman. But as long as the royalty checks kept coming in, the drugs and booze would still keep coming. He had no idea what to do.
One day the daughter of his former manager, Don Arden, stopped by to pick up some money that he owed previously. Sharon Arden was furious that Ozzy had spent the money on drugs. After she calmed down, she said that if he was interested, she would like to manage him as a solo performer. Unbelievable. She saw potential in Ozzy, he was a performer who had been handed a raw deal in rock and roll, being mercilessly ripped off by previous managers for the past ten years and having no musical control while in Sabbath. It was time for a new start. She knew Ozzy was a born performer. It was time to take charge of his life.
The first thing to do was start up a new band. Ozzy sent out notices of audition. After an entire slew of knuckleheads and wannabes, Ozzy was about to give up. A guitarist by the name of Tim Kelly (who would go on to perform several years later in Slaughter) auditioned for him and though he did not pass, he knew of a hot young guitarist who would fit the bill completely.
The guitarist was summoned to Ozzy's audition, but at that time, Ozzy was totally wasted out of his brain, but agreed to hear "this hot chick". He was so stoned he could not tell it was a guy, but he was not too stoned to realize that when this young man played--a short practice warmup lick--it was absolutely
devastating. "Tell him he's got the gig!" Ozzy told his partners. Later when Ozzy was reminded he had hired a guitar player, he panicked: "Oh my God!! I hope he can play!!"
Understatement, indeed.
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 10:59 PM Randy Rhoads was the guitarist that Ozzy had hired for his new band. He was a supremely gifted player--he was guitar teacher devoted to his instrument. He was deeply involved in classical music and applied it to rock guitar. His mother Deloris ran the Musonia School of Music in Los Angeles. He and his mother were very close, even spending hours together playing on flute and classical guitar together. He soon became known as one of L.A.'s hottest players, and even though he copped much of Eddie Van Halen's style, it was clear he had his own style. He started out in local bands such as The Katzenjammer Kids, who were a very goofy theatrical group that played high school dances dressed in drag. Even then local papers took notice of Randy's talent in such bizarre circumstances.
Later he formed a band with his friend Kevin Dubrow called Quiet Riot with a bass player named Kelly Garni. They had no luck getting any major label attention in the late 70's, but they were able to release their first two albums in Japan.
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 11:08 PM Here is a photo of Randy Rhoads during his days with Quiet Riot:
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 11:30 PM Ozzy found his greatest musical partner in Randy Rhoads. Where Ozzy was frustrated before trying to explain his musical ideas to Tony Iommi, who didn't have the patience to listen, Randy on the other hand, due to his experience as a guitar teacher, was able to articulate Ozzy's musical ideas fully. Randy was at first apprehensive of auditioning for Ozzy, as he was not really a fan of Black Sabbath, but their musical collaboration was now leaving Sabbath and all that jazz-rock of their last album light years behind. Ozzy and Randy found bassist Bob Daisley of Blackmore's Rainbow and Lee Kerslake of Uriah Heep to fill out their band. The name of the band was originally going to be Blizzard of Ozz, but it then became only the title of Ozzy Osbourne's first solo project.
ABlairican Pie 03-30-2004, 11:53 PM Randy Rhoads was not only mind-blowingly fast on guitar, but his playing featured a strange, dark, medieval tone that was perfect for Ozzy's lyrics. Listeners were amazed: Who was this guitar player??
Crazy Train
Crazy, but that's how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
Maybe it's not too late
To learn how to love
And forget how to hate
Mental wounds not healing
Life's a bitter shame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I've listened to preachers
I've listened to fools
I've watched all the dropouts
Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role
Mental wounds still screaming
Driving me insane
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I know that things are going wrong for me
You gotta listen to my words
Yeh-h
Heirs of a cold war
That's what we've become
Inheriting troubles I'm mentally numb
Crazy, I just cannot bear
I'm living with something that just isn't fair
Mental wounds not healing
Who and what's to blame
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
I'm going off the rails on a crazy train
Many of Ozzy's critics, especially those who filled church pews, took Ozzy to task over the "satanic" lyrics about the famous occultist of the early 20th Century, Alister Crowley. It was all a joke:
Mr.Crowley
Mr. Crowley, what went on in your head
Mr. Crowley, did you talk with the dead
Your lifestyle to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magick
You waited on Satan's call
Mr. Charming, did you think you were pure
Mr. Alarming, in nocturnal rapport
Uncovering things that were sacred manifest on this earth
Conceived in the eye of a secret
Yeah, they scattered the afterbirth - yeah!
Solo
Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse
Mr. Crowley, it's symbolic of course
Approaching a time that is classic
I hear maidens call
Approaching a time that is drastic
Standing with their backs to the wall
Epilogue:
Was it polemically sent
I wanna know what you meant
I wanna know
I wanna know what you meant, yeah!

It wasn't a winner of an album, but it had one good song on it.
She's So Cold
I’m so hot for her, I’m so hot for her
I’m so hot for her and she’s so cold
I’m so hot for her, I’m on fire for her
I’m so hot for her and she’s so cold
I’m the burning bush, I’m the burning fire
I’m the bleeding volcano
I’m so hot for her, I’m so hot for her
I’m so hot for her and she’s so cold
Yeah, I tried re-wiring her, tried re-firing her
I think her engine is permanently stalled
She’s so cold she’s so cold
She’s so cold cold cold
Like a tombstone
She’s so cold, she’s so cold
She’s so cold cold cold like an ice cream cone
She’s so cold she’s so cold
I dare not touch her my hand just froze
Yeah, I’m so hot for hot for her, I’m so hot for her
I’m so hot for her and even so
Put your hand on the heat, put your hand on the heat
Aw c’mon baby, let’s go
She’s so cold, she’s so cold, cold, she’s so c-c-c-old
But she’s beautiful, though
Yeah, she’s so cold
She’s so cold, she’s so cold
She was born in an arctic zone
She’s so cold she’s so cold, cold, cold
I dare not touch her my hand just froze
She’s so cold, she’s so goddamn cold she’s so
Cold cold cold she’s so cold
Who would believe you were a beauty indeed
When the days get shorter and the nights get long
Lie awake when the rain comes
Nobody will know, when you’re old
When you’re old, nobody will know
That you was a beauty, a sweet sweet beauty
A sweet sweet beauty, but stone stone cold
You’re so cold, you’re so cold, cold, cold
You’re so cold, you’re so cold
I’m so hot for you, I’m so hot for you
I’m so hot for you and you’re so cold
I’m the burning bush, I’m the burning fire
I’m the bleeding volcano
Emotional Rescue
Is there nothing I can say
Nothing I can do
To change your mind
I'm so in love with you
You're too deep in
You can't get out
You're just a poor girl in a rich man's house
Yeah, baby, I'm crying over you
Don't you know promises were never made to keep?
Just like the night, dissolve in sleep
I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue
I'll come to your emotional rescue
Yeah, the other night, crying
Crying baby, yeah I'm crying
Yeah I'm like a child baby
I'm like a child baby
Child yeah, I'm like a child, like a child
Like a child
You think you're one of a special breed
You think that you're his pet Pekinese
I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue
I'll come to your emotional rescue
I was dreaming last night
Last night I was dreaming
How you'd be mine, but I was crying
Like a child, yeah, I was crying
Crying like a child
You will be mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, all mine
You could be mine, could be mine
Be mine, all mine
I come to you, so silent in the night
So stealthy, so animal quiet
I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue
I'll come to your emotional rescue
Yeah, you should be mine, mine, whew
Yes, you could be mine
Tonight and every night
I will be your knight in shining armour
Coming to your emotional rescue
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
I will be your knight in shining armour
Riding across the desert with a fine Arab charger
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 10:18 PM Goodbye to Romance
Yeasterday has been and gone
Tomorrow will I find the sun or will it rain
Everybody's having fun except me I'm the lonely one
I live in shame
Chorus:
I said goodbye to romance
Goodbye to friends
Goodbye to all the past
I guess we'll meet, we'll meet in the end
I've been the king, I've been the clown
Still broken wings can't hold me down
I'm free again
The jester with a broken crown
It won't be me this time around to love in vain
Chorus...
And I feel the time is rightalthough I know
That you just might say to me
What ya gonna do
What ya gonna do
'Cause I have to take this chance
Goodbye to friends and true romance
And to all of you
And to all of you
Solo
Chorus...
And the weather's lookin fine and I think the sun willshine again
And I feel I've cleared my mind all the past is left behind again
Chorus...
Revelation (Mother Earth)
Mother please forgive them
For they know not what they do
Looking back in history's books
It seems it's nothing new
Oh! Let my mother live
Heaven is for heros
And hell is full of fools
Stupidty, no will to live
They're breaking God's own rules
Please let my mother live
Father, of all creation
I think we're all going wrong
The course they're taking
Seems to be breaking
And it won't take too long
Children of the future
Watching empires fall
Madness the cup they drink from
Self destruction the toll
I had a vision, I saw the world burn
And the seas had turned red
The sun had fallen, the final curtain
In the land of the dead
Mother, please show the children
Before it's too late
To fight each other, there's no one winning
We must fight all the hate
I Don't Know
*People look to me and say
Is the end near, when is the final day
What's the future of mankind
How do I know, I got left behind
*Everyone goes through changes
Looking to find the truth
Don't look to me for answers
Don't ask me--I don't know
How am I supposed to know
Hidden meanings that will never show
Fools and prophets from the past
Life's a stageand we're all in the cast
Ya gotta believe in someone asking me who is right
Asking me who to follow, don't ask me, I don't know
I don't know--I don't know--I don't know
Nobody ever told me I found out for myself
Ya gotta believe in foolish miracles
It's not how you play the game
It's if you win or lose you can choose
Don't confuse win or lose, it's up to you
It's up to you--It's up to you--It's up to you
Solo
Repeat*
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 10:30 PM One song did not feature a blazing guitar solo that highlighted Randy's ability, yet it would later be one of Ozzy's most-remembered songs. Ozzy said it was written for the late Bon Scott, but it most likely was written for himself. The lyrics deserved careful scrutiny, things were not as they seemed. The messaged is very obvious.
Suicide Solution
Wine is fine but whiskey's quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle , drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows
Evil thoughts and evil doings
Cold, alone you hang in ruins
Thought that you'd escape the reaper
You can't escape the Master Keeper
'Cause you feel life's unreal and you're living a lie
Such a shame who's to blame and you're wondering why
Then you ask from your cask is there life after birth
What you sow can mean Hell on this earth
Now you live inside a bottle
The reaper's traveling at full throttle
It's catching you but you don't see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me
Breaking laws, knocking doors
But there's no one at home
Made your bed, rest your head
But you lie there and moan
Where to hide, Suicide is the only way out
Don't you know what it's really about
Repeat 1st verse
Steal Away (the Night)
Now I feel the time is right
Love will flow like wine tonight
Give your love and it will come to you
If you feel that you and me
Could escape and hold the key
To a paradise that's true and free
Chorus:
Steal away, steal away
Steal away--the night
Now I've met your honesty
You are here and I am free
Broken chains have fallen all around
Point my finger at the fools
Broken chains and broken rules
Let it be rebellion rules tonight
Chorus...
Can it be a dream come true
Now that I am here with you
Tearful eyes of joy is something new
Runaway with me tonight
Dream the dream, light the light
Happiness is what you give to me
Chorus...
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 10:39 PM Meanwhile, Black Sabbath had not been idle after ejecting Ozzy. They quickly replaced him with former Blackmore's Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio who wrote excellent fantasy-oriented lyrics that were perfect for the band. And best of all, their new album, Heaven and Hell, totally rocked. It was the heaviest album they had done in years. They were rejuvenated and were ready to conquer again. This they did, and they also popularized a new symbol of heavy metal fandom: the hand gesture of il Cornuto, the devil-horns salute; in the manner of Ozzy's previous peace-sign waving onstage.
Neon Knights
Oh no, here it comes again
Can't remember when we came so close to love before
Hold on, good things never last
Nothing's in the past, it always seems to come again
Again and again and again
Cry out to legions of the brave
Time again to save us from the jackals of the street
Ride out, protectors of the realm
Capatin's at the helm, sail across the sea of lights
Circles and rings, dragons and kings
Weaving a charm and a spell
Blessed by the night, holy and bright
Called by the toll of the bell
Bloodied angels fast descending
Moving on a never-bending light
Phantom figures free forever
Out of shadows, shining ever-bright
Neon Knights!
Neon Knights! all right!
Cry out to legions of the brave
Time again to save us from the jackals of the street
Ride out, protectors of the realm
Capatin's at the helm, sail across the sea of lights
Again and again, again and again and again
Neon Knights!
Neon Knights!
All right!
Children of the Sea
In the misty morning, on the edge of time
We've lost the rising sun, a final sign
As the misty morning rolls away to die
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky
We sailed across the air before we learned to fly
We thought that it could never end
We'd glide above the ground before we learned to run, run
Now it seems our world has come undone
Oh they say that it's over
And it just had to be
Ooh they say that it's over
We're lost children of the sea, oh
We made the mountains shake with laughter as we played
Hiding in our corner of the world
Then we did the demon dance and rushed to nevermore
Threw away the key and locked the door
Oh they say that it's over, yeah
And it just had to be
Yes they say that it's over
We're lost children of the sea
In the misty morning, on the edge of time
We've lost the rising sun, a final sign
As the misty morning rolls away to die
Reaching for the stars, we blind the sky
Oh they say that it's over, yeah
And it just had to be
Oh they say that it's over
Poor lost children of the sea, yeah
LOOK OUT! The sky is falling down!
LOOK OUT! The world is spinning round and round and round!
LOOK OUT! The sun is going black, black
LOOK OUT! It's never never never coming back, LOOK OUT!

ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 10:48 PM Lady Evil
There's a place just south of Witches' Valley
Where they say the wind won't blow
And they only speak in whispers of her name
There's a lady they say who feeds the darkness
It eats right from her hand
With a crying shout she'll search you out
And freeze you where you stand
Lady Evil, evil
She's a magical, mystical woman
Lady Evil, evil in my mind
She's queen of the night
All right!
In a place just south of Witches' Valley
Where they say the rain won't fall
Thunder cracks the sky, it makes you bleed, yeah
There's a lady they say who needs the darkness
She can't face the light
With an awful shout, she'll find you out
And have you for the night
Lady Evil, evil
She's a magical, mystical woman
Lady Evil, evil on my mind
She's queen of the night
So if you ever get to Witches' Valley
Don't dream or close your eyes
And never trust your shadow in the dark
'Cause there's a lady I know who takes your vision
And turns it all around
The things you see are what to be, lost and never found
Lady Evil, evil
She's a magical, mystical woman
Lady Evil, evil on my mind
She's queen of the night
She's the queen of sin
Look out, she'll pull you in!
Lady wonder!
The title song is one of Black Sabbath's finest, most insightful lyrics. Ronnie James Dio is a master songwriter:
Heaven and Hell
Sing me a song, you're a singer
Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The Devil is never a maker
The less that you give, you're a taker
So it's on and on and on, it's Heaven and Hell, oh well
The lover of life's not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
The sooner you'll know that you're dreaming
So it's on and on and on, oh it's on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell
I can tell, fool, fool!
Well if it seems to be real, it's illusion
For every moment of truth, there's confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And it's on and on, on and on and on....
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's Heaven and Hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's Heaven and Hell, oh no!
Fool, fool!
You've got to bleed for the dancer!
Fool, fool!

ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 10:57 PM A group shot of Black Sabbath 1980.
For all of the rivalry Ozzy felt with Tony Iommi (whom Ozzy called just a few years before as being "the most boring guitar player since God had crabs"  ), it was drummer Bill Ward who endured very cruel stunts by the Black Sabbath guitar wizard. During the recording of Heaven and Hell, Tony asked Bill repeatedly if he wanted to be set on fire. When Bill finally consented, Tony tipped a can of gasoline on him and lit a match...
 Bill went up like a Christmas tree, in Tony's words, but all that Tony was doing was laughing hysterically while Bill rolled around on the floor screaming and writhing about. Bill was taken to the hospital, suffering third degree burns all over his body. Fortunately, he survived, but not without his mother calling Tony up and telling him, "You barmy bastard! It's about time you grew up! Our poor Bill is going to have his leg cut off!" But Bill was the one everyone picked on in Black Sabbath, the fall guy for many jokes. Funny how things happen like that with drummers...
It was at this point that Bill temporarily left the band due to his excessive drinking. For a drummer that only travelled with either very dirty clothes in his suitcase or liquor bottles in his luggage, his wild lifestyle was catching up with him. He was replaced by American drummer Vinnie Appice, who was a session drummer for John Lennon and also joined Rick Derringer's band.

ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 11:36 PM AC/DC spent little time mourning for the tragic loss of Bon Scott. They had heard Bon rave about a vocalist for a British band called Geordie who had absolutely amazing pipes. The band decided to look up Brian Johnson and asked if he'd like to join the band. He agreed, and once he was on board, it was time to record their follow-up album to Highway to Hell. But all through the recording process, the band felt Bon's presence--almost to the point he was there not only in spirit--but as a spirit, watching over the recording...
The band recorded at a studio in the Bahamas, where odd things began to happen. They heard an odd clicking noise during recording--and found a little crab on the floor, clicking its claws as it crawled across the room. Angus joked, "Let's let him accompany us on tamborine!"
Finally the album was done. They presented the finished product to the record executives at Atlantic Records. All the members sat around the table listening to it. At the end of the album, there was silence by all.....
Finally, one record company member said he liked it. Then all the members gathered said, "I was thinking the same thing..."
And soon, the whole world would be in agreement--Back In Black was the album that took rock and roll by the earlobes and shook hard!! The album stayed at the top at the charts at the grand exalted position of #4--but as Angus said, "it stayed at Number 4 for a very long time!"
Brian Johnson had a perfect raspy voice that was similar to Bon Scott's. AC/DC was the other band next to Black Sabbath in 1980 that survived a successful lead singer transplant--and facelifted rock and roll in the process.
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 11:40 PM Hell's Bells
I'm a rolling thunder, a pouring rain
I'm comin' on like a hurricane
My lightning's flashing across the sky
You're only young but you're gonna die
I won't take no prisoners, won't spare no lives
Nobody's putting up a fight
I got my bell, I'm gonna take you to hell
I'm gonna get you, Satan get you
CHORUS:
Hell's Bells
Yeah, Hell's Bells
You got me ringing Hell's Bells
My temperature's high, Hell's Bells
I'll give you black sensations up and down your spine
If you're into evil you're a friend of mine
See my white light flashing as I split the night
'Cause if GODS on the left, then I'm stickin' to the right
I won't take no prisoners, won't spare no lives
Nobody's puttin' up a fight
I got my bell, I'm gonna take you to hell
I'm gonna get you, Satan get you
CHORUS
yeow
Hell's Bells, Satan's comin' to you
Hell's Bells, he's ringing them now
Hell's Bells, the temperature's high
Hell's Bells, across the sky
Hell's Bells, they're takin' you down
Hell's Bells, they're draggin' you around
Hell's Bells, gonna split the night
Hell's Bells, there's no way to fight, yeah
Ow, ow, ow, ow
Hell's Bells
Back In Black
Back in black
I hate to say it
It's been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes I'm let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hangin' around
I've keep lookin' at the stars
'Cause they're gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I'll never die
I've got nine lives
Cats eyes
Usin' every one of them and runnin' wild
(Chorus)
'Cause I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back,back
Well,I'm back in black
Yes,I'm back in black
Well I'm
back in the back of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet
I'm a power pack
Yes,I'm in a bang
With the gang
They've got to catch me if they want me to hang
'Cause I'm back on the track
And I'm beatin' the flack
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now
I'm makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck
Just get out of my way
(Chorus)
Well I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back
Yes,I'm back
Well,I'm back back
Well,I'm back in black
Yes,I'm back in black
Oooh yeah
Oh yeah
Yes,I am
Hey yeah
Yeah
Oh oh yeah
Back in now
Well I'm back
I'm Back
Back
I'm back
Back
I'm back
Back
I'm back
Back
I'm back
Back
Back in black
Yes,I'm back in black
Out of sight
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 11:45 PM This is one of the greatest songs ever recorded:
Shoot To Thrill
All you women who want a man of the street
But you don't know which way you wanna turn
Just keep a coming and put your hand out to me
'Cause I'm the one who's gonna make you burn
I'm gonna take you down - down, down, down
So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will
Yeah
I'm like evil, I get under your skin
Just like a bomb that's ready to blow
'Cause I'm illegal, I got everything
That all you women might need to know
I'm gonna take you down - yeah, down, down, down
So don't you fool around
I'm gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
Too many women with too many pills
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will
'Cause I shoot to thrill, and I'm ready to kill
I can't get enough, I can't get the thrill
I shoot to thrill, play to kill
Yeah, pull the trigger
Pull it, pull it, pull it, pull the trigger
Oh
Shoot to thrill, play to kill
Too many women, with too many pills
I said, shoot to thrill, play to kill
I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will
'Cause I shoot to thrill, and I'm ready to kill
And I can't get enough, and I can't get my thrill
'Cause I shoot to thrill, play it again
Yeah
Shoot you down
Yeah
I'm gonna get you to the bottom and shoot you
I'm gonna shoot you
Oh hoo yeah yeah yeah
I'm gonna shoot you down yeah yeah
I'm gonna get you down
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Shoot you, shoot you, shoot you, shoot you down
Shoot you, shoot you, shoot you down
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, ooooooh
I'm gonna shoot to thrill
Play to kill
Shoot to thrill
yeah, ooh yeah!!
One of the greatest love songs of all time:
You Shook Me All Night Long
She was a fast machine
She kept her motor clean
She was the best damn woman I had ever seen
She had the sightless eyes
Telling me no lies
Knockin' me out with those American thighs
Taking more than her share
Had me fighting for air
She told me to come but I was already there
'Cause the walls start shaking
The earth was quaking
My mind was aching
And we were makin it and you -
CHORUS:
Shook me all night long
Yeah you shook me all night long
Working double time
On the seduction line
She was one of a kind, she's just mine all mine
Wanted no applause
Just another course
Made a meal out of me and come back for more
Had to cool me down
To take another round
Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing
'Cause the walls were shaking
The earth was quaking
My mind was aching
And we were makin it and you -
CHORUS
And knocked me out and then you
Shook me all night long
You had me shakin' and you
Shook me all night long
Yeah you shook me
Well you took me
You really took me and you
Shook me all night long
Ooooh you
Shook me all night long
Yeah, yeah, you
Shook me all night long
Your really took me and you
Yeah you shook me, yeah you shook me
All night long
By 1980, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford have both left Aerosmith. They're replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay.
That year, The Joe Perry Project releases its first album, Let The Music Do The Talking, on Columbia Records. It's received well critically, but doesn't sell.
The title track is later covered by a regrouped Aerosmith on their 1985 album, Done With Mirrors. But we'll get to that later.
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 11:51 PM Have a Drink On Me
Whiskey, gin and brandy
With a glass I'm pretty handy
I'm trying to walk a straight line
On sour mash and cheap wine
So join me for a drink boys
We're gonna make a big noise
So don't worry about tomorrow
Take it today
Forget about the cheque
We'll get hell to pay
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
On me
Come on
Dizzy, drunk and fightin'
On tequila white lightnin'
My glass is getting shorter
On whiskey, ice and water
So come on and have a good time
And get blinded out of your mind
So don't worry about tomorrow
Take it today
Forget about the cheque
We'll get hell to pay
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
On me
Get stoned
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah
Have a drink on me
Come on
Oooh
Gonna roll around
Gonna hit the ground
Take another swing
Have another drink
Gonna drink it dry
Gonna get me high
Come on all the boys
Make a noise
CHORUS
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Have a drink oooooooon me

What Do You Do For Money Honey
You're working in bars
Riding in cars
Never gonna give it for free
Your apartment with a view
On the finest avenue
Looking at your beat on the street
You're always pushing, shoving
Satisfied with nothing
You bitch, you must be getting old
So stop your love on the road
All your digging for gold
You make me wonder
Yes I wonder, I wonder
Honey, whaddya do for money?
Honey, whaddya do for money?
Where you get your kicks?
You're loving on the take
And you're always on the make
Squeezing all the blood out of men
They're all standing in a queue
Just to spend the night with you
It's business as usual again
You're always grabbin', stabbin'
Trying to get it back in
But girl you must be getting slow
So stop your love on the road
All your digging for gold
You make me wonder
Yes I wonder, yes I wonder
Honey, whaddya do for money?
Honey, whaddya do for money?
Yeah, whaddya do for money honey, how you get your kicks?
Whaddya do for money honey, how you get your licks?
Go
Yeow
Honey, whaddya do for money?
I said, Honey, whaddya do for money?
oh ho honey
Oh honey
Whaddya do for money?
What you gonna do
Honey
Oh yeah honey
Whaddya do for money?
What you gonna do?
Awww, what you gonna do?
ABlairican Pie 03-31-2004, 11:57 PM Let Me Put My Love Into You
Flying on a free flight
Driving all night
With my machinery
'Cause I, I got the power
Any hour
To show the man in me
I got reputations
Blown to pieces
With my artillery
Whoa ho
I'll be guided in
We'll be ridin'
given what you got to me
Don't you struggle
Don't you fight
Don't you worry
'Cause it's your turn tonight
CHORUS:
Let me put my love into you, babe
Let me put my love on the line
Let me put my love into you, babe
Let me cut your cake with my knife
Oh, Like a fever
Burning faster
You spark the fire in me
Crazy feelings
Got me reeling
They got me raising steam
Don't you struggle
Don't you fight
Don't you worry
'Cause it's your turn tonight
Yeah

Cut it
Let me, let me
Oooh

Oh
Let me put my love into you, babe
Let me put my love on the line
Let me put my love into you, babe
Let me give it all
Let me give it all
To you, to you
Give it all
Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution
(All right)
Hey there, all you middle men
Throw away your fancy clothes
And while you're out there sittin' on a fence
So get off your ass and come down here
'Cause rock 'n' roll ain't no riddle man
To me it makes good, good sense
Good sense
Ow
Oooh yeah
Heavy decibels are playing on my guitar
We got vibrations coming up from the floor
We're just listening to the rock that's giving too much noise
Are you deaf, you wanna hear some more
We're just talkin' about the future
Forget about the past
It'll always be with us
It's never gonna die, never gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't noise pollution
Rock 'n' roll ain't gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't noise pollution
Rock 'n' roll it will survive
Yes it will, ha ha ha ha
I took a look inside your bedroom door
You looked so good lying on your bed
Well, I asked you if you wanted any rhythm and love
You said you wanna rock 'n' roll instead
We're just talkin' about the future
Forget about the past
It'll always be with us
It's never gonna die, never gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't noise pollution
Rock 'n' roll ain't gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't no pollution
Rock 'n' roll is just rock 'n' roll
Oh Rock 'n' roll ain't noise pollution
Rock 'n' roll ain't gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't no pollution
Rock 'n' roll ain't gonna die
Rock 'n' roll ain't no pollution
Rock 'n' roll it'll never die
Rock 'n' roll ain't no pollution
Rock 'n' roll
Oh
Rock 'n' roll is just rock 'n' roll
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 10:18 PM Just as Britain founded heavy metal with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple ten years before, the island nation rejuvenated the metal genre in the early 80's with a new super-charged version that took the fist-sized energy of punk and tapered it down to bite-sized portions. It was heavier than punk and contained a little more melodicism and technical virtuosity, but it was louder and more intense than the musical anarchy of punk. It was the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, or NWOBHM for short.
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 10:32 PM One popular NWOBHM band was Diamond Head, which featured vocalist Sean Harris and Brian Tatler on guitar. They released several decent albums, including 1980's Lightning For the Nations which did not exactly set America on fire, but they did make a huge impact on a young American tennis player who toured with the band while on the road in England that year.
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 10:34 PM And what was a cool metal band without a cool logo? In a few years, creating cool metal logos would become a mandatory art form.

ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 10:49 PM Angel Witch was a Welsh NWOBHM band, fronted by Kevin Heybourne which helped usher in a trend to outdo the arcane occultic lyrics of Black Sabbath, along with the metal intensity.
Gorgon
Can you hear the voice
Of a thousand years ago
The laughter of the gorgon
A female that brings doom
Don't look her in the eyes
Or you'll turn to stone
Don't let her deceive you
If you sense her don't look 'round
Or you'll find that she will lead you
And you'll be buried in the ground
You may gaze at her reflection
In still waters of the lake
But don't look at her directly
Or death will be your fate
Beware of her at all times
Her serpents of hypnosis
More evil than the devil
Can kill you with her eyes
You have to get rid of her
The only way I know
Creep up behind with an axe
And decapitate with one blow
I can see you're all confused
And you feel you're being used
And now your heart is broken
So I watched as he set out
And without a doubt
He did as I advised him
You could hear the breaking of her bones
As the axe went through her neck
Didn't realise at the time
That he killed the one that he loved

Pete Townshend's Empty Glass is released on April 21, 1980. The album charts at number 5 in the Billboard charts, while single "Let My Love Open The Door" peaks at number 9.
Let My Love Open The Door
(Townshend)
When people keep repeating
That you'll never fall in love
When everybody keeps retreating
But you can't seem to get enough
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart
When everything feels all over
When everybody seems unkind
I'll give you a four leaf clover
Take all the worry out of your mind
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart
I have the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today, you'll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say
Let my love open the door
It's all I'm living for
Release yourself from misery
There's only one thing gonna set you free
That's my love
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart
When tragedy befalls you
Don't let it drag you down
Love can cure your problems
You're so lucky I'm around
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 11:19 PM One band that broke through the British metal undergroud to achieve mainstream attention was a band fronted by bassist Steve Harris and featured a vocalist by the name of Paul Di'anno, guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton and drummer Clive Burr. Harris' bass featured a trademark "galloping" rhythm that sounded of impending doom. In addition to an eye-catching logo, all good metal bands needed a talisman in the form of a macabre mascot, such as the one featured below. The band was...
ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 11:28 PM Sanctuary
Out of the winter came a war horse of steel.
I've never killed a woman before, but I know how it feels.
*Chorus*:
I know you'd have gone insane if you saw what I saw.
So now I've got to look for sanctuary from the law.
So give me sanctuary from the law and I'll be alright.
Just give me sanctuary from the law and love me tonight, tonight.
I met up with a 'slinger last night to keep me alive.
He spends all his money on gambling and guns to survive.
*Chorus*
I can laugh at the wind, I can howl at the rain.
Down in the Canyon or out in the plain.

Phantom of the Opera
I've been looking so long for you now you won't get away from my grasp.
You've been living so long in hiding in hiding behind that false mask.
And you know and I know that you ain't got long now to last.
Your looks and your feelings are just the remains of your past.
You're standing in the wings, there you wait for the curtain to fall.
Knowing the terror and holding you have on us all.
Yeah, I know that you're gonna scratch me, maim me and maul.
You know I'm helpless from your mesmerising cat call.
Keep your distance, walk away, don't take his bait.
Don't you stray, don't fade away.
Watch your step, he's out to get you, come what may.
Don't you stray, from the narrow way.
I'm running and hiding in my dreams you're always there.
You're the Phantom of the Opera, you're the devil, you're just out to scare.
You damaged my mind and my soul it just floats through the air.
Haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at your lair.

I've got nowhere to call my own, hit the gas, and here I go.
*Chorus*:
I'm running free yeah, I'm running free.
I'm running free yeah, Oh I'm running free.
Spent the night in an L. A. jail, and listened to the sirens wail.
They ain't got a thing on me, I'm running wild, I'm running free.

Remember Tomorrow
Unchain the colours before my eyes,
Yesterday's sorrows, tomorrow's white lies.
Scan the horizon, the clouds take me higher,
I shall return from out of fire.
Tears for rememberance, and tears for joy,
Tears for somebody and this lonely boy.
Out in the madness, the all seeing eye,
Flickers above us, to light up the sky.
Unchain the colours before my eyes,
Yesterday's sorrows, tomorrow's white lies.
Scan the horizon, the clouds take me higher,
I shall return from out of fire.

ABlairican Pie 04-01-2004, 11:55 PM Even though not officially considered part of the NWOBHM, Motorhead were fast and loud enough to be tied in with it. Bassist/vocalist Lemmy Kilmister claimed that his band was so loud that if they moved in next door, "your lawn would die." Having seen the Beatles play in the Cavern and having served as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix, Lemmy was a member of 70's prog-rock band Hawkwind before venturing out to form a band called Bastard, which was nixed by record companies. He then decided to name it after a slang term for an amphetamine addict, or speed freak: Motorhead, which was metal enough. Lemmy has one of the harshest growls in rock, placing the microphone above him as his throat releases its screeching words. To have his head cocked down would lessen the effect of his vocal cords. The band went through several lineup changes, including Fast Eddie Clark and Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham. In 1980, they released their masterpiece, Ace of Spades, where Lemmy's Rickenbacker bass thunders as loud as a lead guitar.
Ace of Spades
If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man
you win some, lose some, it's all the same to me
The pleasure is to play, it makes no difference what you say
I don't share your greed, the only card I need is
the Ace of Spades
the Ace of Spades
Playin' for the high one, dancin' with the devil
going with the flow, it's all a game to me
7 or 11, snake eyes watching you
Double up or quit, double stake or split
the Ace of Spades
the Ace of Spades
You know I'm born to lose
and gamblin's made for fools
But that's the way I like it baby
I don't want to live forever
and don't forget the joker
Pushing up the ante, I know you got to see me
read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die
The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be
the Ace of Spades
the Ace of Spades

(We Are) the Road Crew
Another town another place,
Another girl, another face,
Another truce, another race,
I'm eating junk, feeling bad,
Another night, I'm going mad,
My woman's leaving, I feel sad,
But I just love the life I lead,
Another beer is what I need,
Another gig my ears bleed,
We Are The Road Crew
Another town I've left behind,
Another drink completely blind,
Another hotel I can't find,
Another backstage pass for you,
Another tube of super glue,
Another border to get through,
I'm driving like a maniac,
Driving my way to hell and back,
Another room a case to pack,
We Are The Road Crew
Another hotel we can burn,
Another screw, another turn,
Another Europe map to learn,
Another truckstop on the way,
Another game I learn to play,
Another word I learn to say,
Another bloody customs post,
Another f:censored:ing foreign coast,
Another set of scars to boast,
We Are The Road Crew

ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 07:38 PM The Scorpions recruited Rudi's brother Michael Schenker for the recording of Animal Magnetism, but Michael felt musically confined to remain with the band. They replaced him with capable guitarist Matthias Jabs as a full-time guitarist. The band began to pick up fans when they opened for Ted Nugent in 1980 in America. Maybe it was the provocative album cover with a couple in the back of a limo engaged in heavy romantic action (and a wad of stretched-out bubble gum) that brought them attention, but most of all it was the music: it rocked.
Loving You Sunday Morning
Working hard to get it on for you
Everyday and night
I give you all I've got to give
Take it all
Love I know that you're feelin' blue
Lonely deep inside
'Cause I know how it feels to be alone
Loving you Sunday morning
You were on my mind love everyday
Loving you Sunday morning
Your love makes me fly so far away
People tell me that I'm gonna lose you
Our love will die
So tell me is it true right or wrong
I never ever wanna lose your love
So I will change my life
Believe in me my love
I'm coming home
Loving you Sunday morning
You were on my mind love everyday
Loving you Sunday morning
Your love makes me fly so far away
Holiday
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Exchange the cold days for the sun
A good time and fun
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Exchange your troubles for some love
Wherever you are
Let me take you far away
You'd like a holiday
Longing for the sun you will come
To the island without name
Longing for the sun be welcome
On the island many miles away from home
Be welcome on the island without name
Longing for the sun you will come
To the island many miles away from home
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 07:42 PM The Scorpions also returned with Animal Magnetism, with a less provocative cover, but still....sexist?? Regardless, the album remains a great piece of metal.
The Zoo
The job is done and I go out
Another boring day
I leave it all behind me now
So many worlds away
I meet my girl, she's dressed to kill
And all we gonna do
Is walk around to catch the thrill
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
Enjoy the zoo
And walk down 42nd Street
You wanna be excited too
And you will feel the heat
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
We eat the night, we drink the time
Make our dreams come true
And hungry eyes are passing by
On streets we call the zoo
Falling In Love
I look in your eyes, I really think you're fooling me
You're pretty and nice, it doesn't matter don't you see
'cause I falling in love, it happens to me every day
I'm falling in love, love just seems to slip away
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
Don't tell me your lies, I don't believe a word you say
You do realize, I move around from day to day
And I'm falling in love, it happens to me every day
I'm falling in love, love just seems to slip away
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
I'm falling in love
Ooh, oooh
I'm falling in love
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 07:49 PM Michael Schenker Group was the self-titled band featuring the former guitarist for UFO and the Scorpions. Michael's guitar work was brilliant as usual, but it did not take off in America as well as the others, as it was hoped. The following song is classic:
On and On
A kiss of the wind, then the spirits let fly
To the coldness of sun
I got no place to hide, nowhere to run!
When the wind gets high and the mountains sigh
I've got to get back home the wind don't wait for
No one, no one at all
Moves on and on etc.
Look behind the window winter's come?
Blood on the streets, when the black skies shout
And then people cry no more
Dreams just fade away, realities soar
The only crime is his fate
Can't think, can't relate
Illusions seized His mind
The key to all the answers are locked in his eyes!
Moves on and on,etc
Look behind the Window, Winter's coming?
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 07:52 PM Ted Nugent also hit the big time twice in 1980, with the live Intensities in Ten Cities...

Wango Tango
All right! It's zee Wango, zee Tango
1-2-3-4
Come on boys

My baby she like to rock

A rock 'n' roll sensation
Yeah I like it baby, I do it every night
I got to do it 'cos I like it so much
Oh honey believe it baby
You see it's a crazed gyration of the rock generation
It's my motivation to avoid the nauseation, frustration
When I need some lubrication - Baby!
Kinda like, goes kinda like this
You take her right ankle out
You take her left ankle out
You get her belly propped down
You get her butt propped up
Yeah lookin' good now baby
I think you're in the right position now baby
Yeah but if you ain't quite ready I'll make sure everything is a little bit nicer 'cos
I'm gonna get a little talcum
I'm gonna borrow it from Malcolm
Yeah you look so good baby I'm startin to drool all over myself

I got salivate late, salivate late, salivate late
Got salivate, salivate, salivate, salivate, heh heh heh
Yeah you look so good baby, I like it, I like it, I like it
You know what I been talkin' about honey
It's a nice dance, we gotta a nice dance goin' here
Now what you gotta do, I'll tell you what you gotta do
You got to pretend your face is a Maserati
It's a Maserati
It's a Maserati
It's a gettin' hotty
It's a Maserati, Maserati, Maserati
It's a fast one too man, that thing's turbocharged
You feel like a little fuel injection honey?
I'll tell ya about it, I'll tell you about it
I'll check out the hood scoop
I gotta get that hood scoop off, shine and shine and buff
I gotta buff it up, buff it up, buff it up, buff it up, buff it up,
Yeah, shiny now baby, heh heh heh
You've been drivin' all night long
It's time to put the old Maserati away
So you look for a garage, you think you see a garage
Wait a minute, Hey!, there's one up ahead
And the damn thing's open
Hello! Get in there!
Is my baby alive? (Is my baby alive?)
Is my baby alive? (Is my baby alive?)
Is my baby alive?
She Wango'd to death
Wango Tango (Wango Tango)

ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:08 PM Now that America's thirst for metal was unquenchable, Judas Priest gave the States their first real breakthrough album: British Steel.
Living After Midnight
Living after midnight, rockin' to the dawn
Lovin' 'til the morning, then i'm gone, i'm gone
I took the city 'bout one a.m, loaded, loaded
I'm all geared up to score again, loaded, loaded
I come alive in the neon light
That's when i make my moves right
Living after midnight, rockin' to the dawn
Lovin' 'til the morning, then i'm gone, i'm gone
Got gleaming chrome, reflecting steel, loaded, loaded
Ready to take on every deal, loaded, loaded
My pulse is racing, i'm hot to take
This motor's revved up, fit to break
Living after midnight, rockin' to the dawn
Lovin' 'til the morning, then i'm gone, i'm gone
I'm aiming for ya
I'm gonna floor ya
My body's coming
All night long
The air's electric, sparkin' power, loaded, loaded
I'm getting hotter by the hour, loaded, loaded
I set my sights and then home in
The joint starts flying when i begin
Living after midnight, rockin' to the dawn
Lovin' 'til the morning, then i'm gone, i'm gone
(repeat and fade)
Breaking the Law
There i was completely wasting, out of work and down
All inside it's so frustrating as i drift from town to town
Feel as though nobody cares if i live or die
So i might as well begin to put some action in my life
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
So much for the golden future, i can't even start
I've had every promise broken, there's anger in my heart
You don't know what it's like, you don't have a clue
If you did you'd find yourselves doing the same thing too
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
You don't know what it's like!!
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law, breaking the law
Breaking the law
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:16 PM Judas Priest had said their goal was to become "the definition of metal." An admirable goal, indeed, that they very much accomplished on this album.
Metal Gods
We've taken too much for granted
And all the time it had grown
From techno seeds we first planted
Evolved a mind of its own
Marching in the streets
Dragging iron feet
Laser beaming hearts
Ripping men apart
From off i've seen my perfection
Where we could do as we please
In secrecy this infection
Was spreading like a disease
Hiding underground
Knowing we'd be found
Fearing for our lives
Reaped by robot's scythes
Metal gods
Metal gods
(solo Glenn)
Metal gods
Metal gods
Machines are taking all over
With mankind in their command
In time they'd like to discover
How they can make their demand
Better be the slaves
To their wicked ways
But meeting with our death
Engulfed in molten breath
You Don't Have to Be Old to Be Wise
I've had enough of being programmed
And told what i ought to do
Let's get one thing straight
I'll choose my fate
And it's got nothing to do with you
The years are flying by and it's time i got high
Took a sample of the good things in life
This is a chance
I'm gonna take
Gonna kick out trouble and strife
I grow sick and tired of the same old lies
Might look a little young
So what's wrong
You don't have to be old to be wise
No i don't care that the people stare
Accuse me of going mad
Just get a long hard look into the mirror
Then, tell me now who's been had
The way things are going i won't get to show 'em
Go single all the time's up to me
So it's off with the ties
No compromise
Wanna taste what it's like to be free
I grow sick and tired of the same old lies
Might look a little young
So what's wrong
You don't have to be old to be wise
I grow sick and tired of the same old lies
Might look a little young
So what's wrong
You don't have to be old to be wise
Alright, i'm gonna gather my things
Go through the door
Live and let live from now on
At last a free hand, no longer pre-planned
I got a will of my own
I go as i please
Fend for myself
Pull all the stops, throw the dice
Out on my own, gonna go it alone
When i need it
Then i'll ask for advice
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise
You don't have to be old to be wise

Look around
They're moving in
Hold your ground
When they begin
We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they'll never get near
Then they can get out of here
Gonna keep on driving
Never stop
United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all
So keep it up
Don't give in
Make a stand
We're gonna win
We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they'll never get near
Then they can get out of here
Gonna keep on driving
Never stop
United, united, united we stand

Rapid Fire
Pounding the world like a battering ram
Forging the furnace for the final grand slam
Chopping away at the source soon the course will be done
Leaving a trail of destruction that's second to none
Hammering anvils straining muscle and might
Shattering blows crashing browbeating fright
Fast devastating and desolisating the curse
Blasting the cannons of truth through each man of this earth
Wielding the axe comes the one culmination
That's always seemed certain to bring down the curtain on greed
Sifting the good from the bad it's the age for the rage
Of the dogs which must fall to the just and be free
Now grate for the vandals who trampled and sampled
Till this place conditioned brought forth demolition to war
The slipping and sliding corrosive subsiding
That withered and wained till the world seemed all drained fills the bay
Pounding the world like a battering ram
Forging the furnace for the final grand slam
Chopping away at the source soon the course will be done
Leaving a trail of destruction that's second to none
Second to none
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:30 PM Still, the guardians of Top 40 radio regarded hitmakers like Foreigners as the keepers of the hard rock flame. In 1980, the band released Head Games.
Head Games
Daylight, alright
I don't know, I don't know if it's real
Been a long night and something ain't right
You won't show, you won't show how you feel
No time ever seems right
To talk about the reasons why you and I fight
It's high time to draw the line
Put an end to this game before it's too late
Head games, it's you and me baby
Head games, and I can't take it anymore
Head games, I don't wanna play the...
Head games
I daydream for hours it seems
I keep thinkin' of you, yeah, thinkin' of you
These daydreams, what do they mean?
They keep haunting me, are they warning me?
Daylight turns into night
We try and find the answer but it's nowhere in sight
It's always the same and you know who's to blame
You know what I'm sayin', still we keep on playin'
Head games, that's all I get from you
Head games, and I can't take it anymore
Head games, don't wanna play the...
Head games
So near, so far away
We pass each other by 'cause we don't know what to say
It's so clear, I'm sorry to say
But if you wanna win you gotta learn how to play
Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, 'till I can't take it anymore
Head games, instead of makin' love
Head games, ooh
Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, 'till I can't take it anymore, no more
Head games, instead of makin' love, we play
Head games
Head games, in the first degree
Head games, yeah, always you and me
Head games, why do you do it baby?
Head games
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:33 PM Dirty White Boy
Hey, baby, if you're feelin' down
I know what's good for you all day
Are you worried what your friends see
Will it ruin your reputation lovin' me
'Cause I'm a dirty white boy
Yeah a dirty white boy
A dirty white boy
Don't drive no big black car
Don't like no Hollywood movie star
You want me to be true to you
You don't give a damn what I do to you
I'm just a dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, dirty white boy
Dirty white boy
Well, I'm a dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, yeah, dirty white boy
A dirty white boy
I've been in trouble since I don't know when
I'm in trouble now and I now somehow I'll find trouble again
I'm a loner, but I'm never alone
Every night I get one step closer to the danger zone
'Cause I'm a dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, yeah, dirty white boy
Dirty white boy, I'm a dirty white boy
Dirty white boy
C'mon, c'mon boy
Dirty white boy, white boy
Dirty white boy, I'm a dirty white boy

Any Way You Want It
Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
She loves to laugh
She loves to sing
She does everything
She loves to move
She loves to grove
She loves the lovin' things
Ooh, all night, all night
Oh, every night
So hold tight, hold tight
Ooh, baby, hold tight
Oh, she said,
Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
She said, any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
I was alone
I never knew
What good love could do
Ooh, then we touched
Then we sang
About the lovin' things
Ooh, all night, all night
Oh, every night
So hold tight, hold tight
Ooh baby, hold tight
Oh, she said,
Any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
She said, any way you want it
That's the way you need it
Any way you want it
Where Were You?
Where were you
When i wanted you to love me through the night?
Where were you
When i wanted you to love and hold me tight?
Where were you, little darlin'
When you said to pick you up after school?
I know where, little lady,
'cause my mama didn't raise no fool.
Yeah.
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
I know where, baby,
You been runnin' 'round loose on the side.
I know where, little lady,
You been runnin' 'round with something to hide.
I don't mind, darlin', if you're feelin' fancy and free.
I don't mind, little baby,
Cause your sister's lookin' real good to me.
Hey,
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
I didn't know what the hell was goin' on,
Someday you're gonna break.
So don't try to get yourself straight,
You're just a little too late.
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:50 PM Styx released Cornerstone, with a lot of synth which proved they were still relevant in the age of new wave.
Borrowed Time
Yeah yeah!
Don't look now, but here come the eightees!
I was so cool back in sixty-five
I had it made 'cause i understood what to do to survive
I had my car, and i made the scene
Didn't give a damn about no gasoline
They can go to hell
My friend we never thought about the world
And its realities
The promised land was ours
We were the great society
I'm so confused by the things i read, i need the truth
But the truth is, i don't know who to believe
The left say yes, and the right says no
I'm in between and the more i learn
Well, the less that i know
I got to make a show
Livin' high, living fine
Livin' high on borrowed time
Yes! no!
Yes! no!
No! yes!
No! yes!
Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dreamland
Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dreamland
'cause we're
Livin' high
Livin' fine (you know i'm livin' fine)
Livin' high (yes i'm livin' high)
On borrowed time (on borrowed time)
Livin' high (whoohoo!)
Livin' fine (ahhh!)
Livin' high
On lake shore drive (midnight ride)
Livin' high (we're livin' high)
On leslie lane (let's go back and play it again!)
Livin' high (we're livin' high)
On red bud trail (on red bud, red bud trail!)
Livin' high
On central drive (he's on central drive!)
Livin' high (we're livin', livin' high)
On prestwick drive (catch me on prestwick drive!...)
Livin' high (...gettin' in and drivin' my mercedes...)
Livin' fine (...up and down and up and down -- sh*t! i don't....)
ABlairican Pie 04-03-2004, 08:53 PM Babe
Babe, i'm leaving, i must be on my way
The time is drawing near
My train is going, i see it in your eyes
The love, the need, your tears
But i'll be lonely without you
And i'll need your love to see me through
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And i'll be missing you.
You know it's you babe
Whenever i get weary and i've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you babe
Giving me the courage and the strength i need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, i love you.
You know it's you babe
Whenever i get weary and i've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you babe
Giving me the courage and the strength i need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, i love you.
Babe, i'm leaving, i'll say it once again
Somehow try to smile
I know the feeling we're trying to forget
If only for a while
But i'll be lonely without you
And i'll need your love to see me through
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And i'll be missing you
Babe, i love you.
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 04:16 PM In addition to the familiar favorites, one band whose career hit it big in the 80's was Loverboy, fronted by hot singer Mike Reno. Their music was a perfect combination of 70's style radio-friendly hard rock and 80's style synth.
Turn Me Loose
I was born to run,
I was born to dream,
The craziest boy you ever seen,
I gotta do It my way,
Or no way at all.
And I was here to please,
I'm even on knees
Makin love to whoever I please,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.
And then you came around,
Tried to tie me down,
I was such a clown,
You had to have it your way,
Or no way at all.
Well I've had all I can take,
I can't take it no more,
I'm gonna pack my bags and fly......baby,
Or no way at all.
So why don't you turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.
Why don't you turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
I gotta do it my way,
I wanna fly.
I'm here to please,
I'm even on my knees,
Makin love to whoever I please,
I gotta do it my way,
I gotta do it my way,
And when you came around,
You Tried to tie me down,
I was such a clown,
You had to have it your way,
Well I'm sayin no way,
So why don't you turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.
Why don't you turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
Turn me lose,
I gotta do it my way,
I wanna fly.
Repeat
Turn me lose,
Repeat.
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 04:28 PM Just before Southern Rock could ride off into the sunset, two former members of Lynryd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, formed their own band, the Rossington-Collins Band. Their first album was Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere.
Don't Misunderstand Me
Oh well, I know where you're goin'. I see where you've been.
Don't you know by now you've got to take life on the chin
Still you sit and wonder why the past is gone
Baby, you'll go under if you don't carry on
Don't misunderstand me
I realize it ain't easy to take
But you've been hiding and I've been riding like the wind to find you
I don't need no promises. Just tell me the truth
Mister keep it honest. That's all I ask of you
Don't be second guessing 'bout where you want to be
Baby, count your blessings, 'cause you won't find one like me
Don't misunderstand me
I realize it ain't easy to take
But you've been hiding and I've been riding like the wind to find you
Well, now lady get your dress on. Grab them fancy shoes
Honey, I'm ready and waiting on you
Time is surely waistin'. We've so much to do
We're both too smart to be faking
And I know it doesn't matter which road we take
Or if it's your way or my way
Well, now lady let me tell you what we're gonna do
We're gonna ride every highway
Don't misunderstand me
I realize it ain't easy to take
But you've been hiding and I've been riding like the wind to find you
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 04:36 PM 1980 saw the rise of another hard-rocking band in the vein of AC/DC: Angel City, fronted by manic lead singer Doc Neeson. Their first album was Face to Face.
Take a Long Line
He was selling postcards from a paper stand
a whiskey bottle in his withered hand
he put a finger on a photo from an old magazine
and saw himself in the shadow of his dream
They found him with his head inside a tin-pot crown
told him his feet stank and took him downtown
called him agitator, spy and thief
shut him up in solitary third degree
take a long line, reel him in
He tried to appeal to the king of might
he said "I'm just excercising my sacred right"
the king he said "You ain't got no rights
you're a madman, a traitor, get outta my sight"
take along line, reel him in
They put him aboard a well wound whirlwind
pulled out his teeth and rold him to grin
he gave them a smile, pulled out a bottle of wine
and said "I never existed, you've been wasting your time"
take a long line, reel him in

Bought me a black beret

Gimme a whiskey, don't think twice

"I'm the one who can please you"
Ain't that what you said
You seemed so alone
I guess I was easily led
I showed you my love
But I guess that it went to your head
When you were hungry
I brought you your breakfast in bed
Even it up, even it up, even it up
Even it up, even it up, even it up
A good man pays his debt
But you ain't paid yours yet
Even it
Even it up
I took you down over the tracks when
you wanted some sin
I brought you satin and herbs from
the places I been
Now something tells me you're
going to use me again
You think you can lay down the how and
the where and the when
Even it up, even it up, even it up
Even it up, even it up, even it up
I don't want to bum it all
But this axe she got to fall
Even it
Even it up
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 04:59 PM The cover of a Heart bootleg.
Rockin' Heaven Down
Step into the light
Your on
Hook into the night
That look from eye to eye
A flash gets passed around
A band of wild angels
Rockin heaven down
Roll, roll, roll
Roll out the soul
You get that feel
And everybody knows
You're moving their minds
Moving their minds around
Rockin heaven
Rockin heaven down
You step into the night
On your way back home
What a scene it was tonight
I'm so glad I'm not alone
That look in your eye
Makes me come unwound
Come on baby let's go
Rockin heaven down
Roll, roll, roll
Roll out the soul
You get that feel
and everybody knows
You're moving their minds
Moving around
Rockin heaven down
Rockin heaven down
Rock me home
Rock me home
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:16 PM Dipping back into 1979, we have Sammy Hagar's Street Machine, a perfect album to warm up the decade which featured a whole lot of the Little Red Rocker. Here he sings about every guy's favorite car at the turn of the decade:
Trans-Am (Highway Wonderland)
She's American made, you know what I mean?
Red on black, she's a street machine.
Set's ten inches off the ground with a custom plate
That says I-E-A-T Z28
Trans Am
Trans Am
Trans Am
Highway Wonderland.
Yeah, '79 will be the end of the road.
If you want horse power overload.
Ooh, if you like kicks, just take her to the floor
And you red-line shift them gears feel the engine roar on my
Trans Am
Come on catch me if you can
In my Trans Am, Highway Wonderland.
Trans Am
Trans Am
Trans Am
Highway Wonderland.
And she shines on the street.
And she shines at the heat.
And she shines in my baby's eyes.
And she shines on every other guy's
Trans Am
Trans Am
Trans Am
Highway Wonderland.
-solo-
T-R-A-N-S A-M
Trans Am!
-2nd solo-
From Daytona Beach down to Riverside
If there's a race, she's qualified.
My six point six gets a little too heavy
For a "Big Balls" Ford or a 350 Chevy
Trans Am
Come on, catch me if you can in my
Trans Am, Highway Wonderland
Trans Am
Trans Am
Me and my Trans Am
Come on, catch me if you can in my
Trans Am, ooh, Highway Wonderland.
Yeah!
Highway Wonderland!!! Yeah!

ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:20 PM Plain Jane
She falls somewhere in-between
Levi's and Vogue Magazine
She doesn't paint on her face
But what she does she does with taste.
And you can call her Plain Jane
But she's drivin' me insane
Plain Jane - Oh yeah, you're drivin' me insane.
Plain Jane - Oh, let me love you baby, yeah!
She kisses with her lips so tight.
Ooh, it hit's me just like dynamite.
Her sweet, simple innocence
Makes everyone else seem like past tense
And you can call her Plain Jane
But she's drivin' me insane.
Plain Jane - Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're drivin' me insane, oh!
Plain Jane - Heave-ho, oh, let me love you, love you, love you, love you,
love you, love you
Takes a special kind of man.
To love and understand
My Plain Jane.
My Plain Jane - Talkin' 'bout my baby.
My Plain Jane - Oh yea.
Plain Jane - Uh-huh, my
Plain Jane - Ain't no body else no.
Plain Jane - Tellin' you you're drivin me insane.
Her smile comes on insecure.
But her eyes, they let you know for sure.
Oh, you gotta look hard and deep.
Her kind of lovein', it don't come cheap, no.
And you can call her Plain Jane
But she's drivin' me insane.
My Plain Jane - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're drivin' me insane. Ow!
Plain Jane - I just, what's so bad? I wanna love you, love you, love you,
love you, love you, love you
Plain Jane - Ow! I'm talkin' 'bout my
Plain Jane - Yeah, yeah, she's my baby.
Plain Jane - See her walkin' down the street, and I just wanna love you.
My Plain Jane - Come here baby.
Plain Jane - Now, come here baby.
Plain Jane - There ain't nobody else, no, and I'm gonna love you, love you,
love you, love you, love you, love you
Plain Jane - Ow!
Plain Jane - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Planet's On Fire (Burn In Hell)
Cancelled flights, limousines,
Hustle bustles, crazy scenes.
First, you're here, then, you're there
Pretty soon, man, you've been everywhere.
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire
We've seen the rise, we'll see the fall
He's here to see us all,
Burn in hell.
Time ticks away, faster, faster.
You run so fast you forget what you're after.
You make a deal to sell your soul
Just to find out, baby, it's been sold.
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire
We've seen the rise, we'll see the fall
He's here to see us all,
Burn in hell.
Burn in hell.
Not me, baby!
-solo-
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire
We've seen the rise, we'll see the fall
He's here to see us all,
Burn in hell.
Fine, white lines of crystal light
Keep us up all day and all night.
Oh, we just forgot girls and boys
Who thrive on cosmic toys.
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire
We've seen the rise, we'll see the fall
He's here to see us all,
Burn in hell.
Burn in hell, Owwww!!
(This planet's on fire)
(This planet's on fire)
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire
Ooh, this planet's on fire
Oh, Satan's desire, yeah!
Yes!
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:36 PM Another song from Pete Townsend's Empty Glass album was:
Rough Boys
Tough boys
Running the streets
Come a little closer
Rough toys
Under the sheets
Nobody knows her
Rough boys
Don't walk away
I very nearly missed you
Tough boys
Come over here
I wanna bite and kiss you
I wanna see what I can find
Tough kids
Take a bottle of wine
When your deal is broken
Ten quid
She's so easy to find
Not a word is spoken
Rough boys
Don't walk away
I'm still pretty blissed here
Tough boy
I'm gonna carry you home
You got pretty pissed dear
Gonna get inside you
Gonna get inside your bitter mind
Rough boys
Don't walk away
I wanna buy you leather
Make noise
Try and talk me away
We can't be seen together
Tough kids
What can I do?
I'm so pale and weedy
Rough fits
In my Hush Puppy shoes
But I'm still pleadin
Tough boys
Running the streets
Come a little closer
Rough toys
Under the sheets
Nobody knows her
Rough boys
Don't walk away
I very nearly missed you
Tough boys
Come over here
I wanna bite and kiss you
I wanna see what I can find!
Pete Townsend onstage with the Clash in early 1980:
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:42 PM The Sex Pistols also released a documentary the year before called The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, where they accused the record companies of signing them and dropping them.
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:48 PM With their first album still burning up the charts, it was hard for the Cars to get much attention for their third release, Panorama. The album was pretty much a disappointment. There was at least one decent song:
Touch and Go
all I need is what you've got
all I'll tell is what you're not
all you know is what you hear
I get this way when you come near
then I know it's gone too far
uh, oh, I touched your star
and it felt so right
just like the hush of midnight
and then you said
with me it's touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-o-o
all I need is you tonight
flying like a cement kite, yeah
in your headlock on the floor
who could ever ask for more
and I know it's gone too far
uh, oh, I touched your star
and it felt so right
just like the hush of midni-ight
and then you said
with me it's touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-o-o
all I want is you tonight
I guess that dress does fit you tight, yeah
you know that look does make me shake
it almost looks too good to fake
and I know it's gone too far
uh, oh, I touched your star-r-r
and it felt so right
just like the hush of midni-ight
then you said
with me it's touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-o-o
well it's touch and go-o-o-o
its touch and go-o-o-o
well it's touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-wo yeah
well it's touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go-o-o-o
touch and go
all I need is what you've got
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:56 PM Gary Myrick and the Figures recorded an excellent new wave pop song called "She Talks in Stereo."
ABlairican Pie 04-04-2004, 05:59 PM Another excellent new wave band from Britain was Ultravox, led by vocalist Midge Ure. Their 1980 album was Vienna.
Sleepwalk
Sleepwalk. (Repeat 3 times)
Rolling and falling, I'm choking and calling,
Name after name after name.
Sleepwalk. (Repeat 3 times)
Naked and bleeding, the streetlights stray by me,
Hurting my eyes with their glare.
Sleepwalk. (Repeat 3 times)
Helplessly breaking, exchanging my faces,
Destined, we had to collide.
Sleepwalk!
Taut on the outside, I'm crumpling and crawling,
Watching the day drag away.
Spiralling deeper, I can't feel my fingers,
Rip round my throat as I dream.
Dream!
Sleepwalk. (Repeat 12 times and fade)
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:08 PM Split Enz were the first major musical export of New Zealand with their first album True Colors. Led by brothers Tim and Neil Finn, they crafted catchy new wave pop tunes with smart songwriting, such as their first hit:
I Got You
I got you - that's all I want
I won't forget - that's a whole lot
I don't go out - not now that you're in
Sometimes we shout - but that's no problem
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lyin'
Look at you - you're a pageant
You're everything - that I've imagined
Somethings wrong - I feel uneasy
You show me - tell me you're not teasin'
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lyin'
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, can you tell me you're not lyin'
There's no doubt - not when I'm with you
When I'm without - I stay in my room
Where do you go - I get no answer
You're always out - it gets on my nerves
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
(But) I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, can you tell me you're not lyin'
I don't know why sometimes I get frightened
You can see my eyes, you can tell that I'm not lying
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:14 PM The Talking Heads also released Fear of Music which featured the hit "Life During Wartime." With the image of a metal grate on the cover, the album title was appropriate for a time when both traditional music fans--and the forces of religious decency--decried the winds of change blowing through the nation and culture.
Life During Wartime
Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
packed up and ready to go
Heard of some gravesites, out by the highway
a place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in the ghetto
I've lived all over this town
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
this ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain't got time for that now
Transmit the message, to the receiver
hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, couple of visas
don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, trucks are loading
everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nightime
I might not ever get home
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
this ain't no fooling around
This ain't no mudd club, or C. B. G. B.
I ain't got time for that now
Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
somebody might see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
to last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers
ain't got no headphones
ain't got no records to play
Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time?
Can't write a letter, can't send a postcard
I can't write nothing at all
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
this ain't no fooling around
I'd love you hold you, I'd like to kiss you
I ain't got no time for that now
Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
we blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we're tapping phone lines
I know that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle so many times now
don't know what I look like!
You make me shiver, I feel so tender
we make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
you ought to get you some sleep
Get you instructions, follow directions
then you should change your address
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day
whatever you think is best
Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
the burning keeps me alive
Try to stay healthy, physical fitness
don't want to catch no disease
Try to be careful, don't take no chances
you better watch what you say
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:26 PM Another death occurred in 1980: On May 14, on the eve of their first American tour, Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. The band was devastated, but given the mercurial nature of Curtis' emotions, it was not all very surprising. The band as Joy Division broke up, only to carry on as something new...
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:33 PM Lyrics to Boy
Twilight
I look into his eyes
They're closed but I see something
A teacher told me why
I laugh when old men cry
My body grows and grows
It frightens me you know
The old man tried to walk me home
I thought he should have known
Twilight...
Twilight, lost my way
Twilight, can't find my way
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
I'm running in the rain
I'm caught in a late night play
It's all; it's everything
I'm soaking through the skin
Twilight...darkened day
Twilight...lost my way
Twilight...night and day
Twilight...can't find my way
Can't find your way
Can't find my way
Can't find your way
Twilight...darkened day
Twilight...lost my way
Twilight...night and day
Twilight...can't find my way
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
In the shadow boy meets man
An Cat Dubh
(The Black Cat)
Say goodnight
She waits for me to
Put out the light
Lay there still
She waits to break my will
Yes, if I know the truth about you...
And in the daylight
A blackbird makes a violent sight
And when she is done
She sleeps beside the one
Yes, If I know the truth about you...
Into the Heart
Into the heart...of a child
I stay a while...oh, I can go back
Into the heart...of a child
I can smile
I can go there
Into the heart
Into the heart of a child
I can go back
I can stay awhile
Into the heart...
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:43 PM The following song was dedicated to the late Ian Curtis:
A Day Without Me
Starting a landslide in my ego
Look from the outside
To the world I left behind
I'm dreaming
You're awake
If I were sleeping
What's at stake
A day without me
Whatever the feelings
I keep feeling
What are the feelings
You left behind
Today's a day without me
I started a landslide in my ego
Look from the outside
To the world I left behind
In the world I left behind
Wipe their eyes, and then let go
To the world I left behind
Shed a tear, and then let go...
Below a photo of Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton:
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:49 PM In the midst of all the synth-pop hysteria, U2 were bringing guitar back to the forefront of mainstream "new wave." In fact, was there a name for what they were doing? It was too upbeat to be punk. It was too guitar-heavy to be new wave. It was....just great music that defied categorization.
Out of Control
Monday morning
Eighteen years of dawning
I say how long
You say how long
It was one dull morning
Woke the world with bawling
I was so sad (so sad)
It was so bad
I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control
Boys and Girls
Go to the school and girls
They make children
Not like this one
I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control
I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control
(Out of control)
I fought fate
There's blood on the garden gate
The man said childhood
It's in his childhood
One day I'll die
The choice will not be mine
Will it be too late
You can't fight it
I was of a feeling it was out of control
I had the opinion it was out of control
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 10:55 PM One song on Boy talked about a real fear of the youngsters who were deemed too "out of control" by parents and authorities. A local mental asylum was the place to take "incorrigible" kids where the ultimate choice of escape was either cutting one's wrist or electroshock therapy.
The Electric Co.
Boy, stupid boy
Don't sit at the table
Until you're able to
Toy, broken toy
Shout shout
You're inside out
If you don't know...Electric co.
If you don't know...Electric co.
Red, running red
Play for real
The toy could feel
A hole in your head
You go in shock
You're spoon-fed
If you don't know...Electric co.
If you don't know...Electric co.
One two three four...
If you don't know...Electric co.
[Repeat 6 times]
Just to hear me
I've found me way home
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:10 PM By 1980, a new trend had taken place in the new wave pop scene which had supplanted the vile, unkempt image of punk just a few years earlier: The New Romantic movement. Instead of shocking all with spiked hair and dog collars, many bands and performers had taken on a cultured, suave look, with a little bigger permed hair and swanky suits, with a splash of dayglo colors. The music tried to become a little more than throwaway pop ditties. Many were heavily influenced by the smooth look and sounds of Roxy Music and other glam-pop bands.
Many wanted the cutting edge while still remaining hip and accessible.
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:12 PM One such New Romantics band that caught the attention of many was Duran Duran.
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:13 PM Duran Duran
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:17 PM Spandau Ballet were another promising New Romantics pop group.
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:23 PM Japan was another popular British New Romantics band featuring lead vocalist David Sylvain.
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:30 PM One band influenced by the punk movement yet keeping in touch with rock and roll roots was The Pretenders, featuring the sexy-yet-tough Chrissy Hynde on vocals and rhythm guitar, James Honeyman-Scott on lead guitar, Pete Farndon on bass
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:32 PM Chrissie Hynde live
ABlairican Pie 04-05-2004, 11:34 PM One band associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was Def Leppard, with their debut On Through the Night. They were not quite of the faster-version-of-Sabbath variety, but they had a young fresh approach and tight songs that were not the typical epic affairs of the 70's.
Rock Brigade
Well, in the middle of the night
And the early morning light
You can hear them a million miles away
They'll be bangin' on their drums
Bangin' on your door
Waving their flags telling you to score
Watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Oh, no it's the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Look out for the rock brigade
Leading you away, away
So when they hit your town
You'd better get down
I'm telling no lies to you mister
'Cos they live for rock'n'roll
They'll try to steal your soul
Might even try to steal your sister, oh
So in the middle of the night
Or the early morning light
If you hear them comin' your way
Well you'd better watch your step
Don't step out of line
'Cos here they come one more time
Watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Oh no it's the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Look out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
You better watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
I say watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Keep your eyes on the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Don't let your eyes off the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
They'll be leading you away, away, away

ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 02:41 PM The lineup of Def Leppard included Joe Elliot on vocals, Pete Willis on lead guitar, Phil Collen on rhythm guitar, Pete Savage on bass and Rick Allen on drums.
Rocks Off
Well we were gettin' ready just the other night
When a knock on the dressing room door
Gave way to a leather jacket little girl
Who we'd never ever seen before
In her red satin dress
And her high heeled shoes
She took us all by surprise
And when she asked us what we wanted to do
She said it with her eyes
Just getcha rocks off
Whoah
Well when we finally took the stage
There she was but she wasn't on her own
'Cos she'd brought some friends maybe 5 or 6
Yeah, she must have been on the phone
And when they started dancing and jumping around
Well we couldn't believe our eyes
'Cos they'd got the whole damn audience rockin'
And they'd got us paralyzed
Just getcha rocks off
Thank you
Goodnight
Whoah
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 02:50 PM One of the things that Joe Elliot liked to do as a youngster was write fictitious reviews of bands he would like to be in. He doesn't remember what they exactly said, but "I'm sure we were phenomenal."
Meanwhile, the band would take a little while going from Sheffield, England, to here:
Hello America
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, Hello America
Well I'm takin' me a trip I'm going down to California
Yeah, I'm gonna try Hollywood and San Pedro Bay, yeah yeah
I'll tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna give my love to you
I'm gonna take you where the lights are bright
I'm gonna give you my love tonight
Pete Willis and Joe Elliot:
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
I'm gonna get me a greyhound bus down the motorway
I'm gonna spend a little time in 'Frisco and L.A., yeah yeah
But when it gets to twelve o'clock
And you feel that you gotta rock
You'd better let your hair hang down
So we can boogie all over town
Takin' me a trip I'm going down to California
Yeah, I'm gonna try Hollywood and San Pedro Bay, yeah yeah
I'll tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna give my love to you
So won't ya take me where the lights are bright
Won't you give me your love tonight
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
Hello America, hello America
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:01 PM Meanwhile, there was division in the ranks of KISS. Peter Criss decided he had had enough and quit the band. He was tired of being controlled by Paul and Gene, so as he left, it was time to find a new drummer--and a new face. They found it in Paul Caravello, which presented a problem: KISS couldn't have THREE Pauls (Ace's real name was Paul). Simple: They gave him the stage name, Eric Carr, and gave him a new persona: The Hawk.
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:07 PM Just kidding about the photo!! NOT kidding about their idea of making him into a Hawk in a feathered outfit!
So the members of KISS decided to give him a new animal identity to replace the one of Criss' Cat:
The Fox.
Uhhh....okay....ohno:
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:10 PM Jackson Brown released Hold Out
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:16 PM Canadian songwriter Bruce Cockburn released Humans, another album based on his observations of the condition of the state of human affairs at home and abroad. It featured a decent mixing of folk and jazz.
Grim Travellers
ministers meet -- work on the
movement of goods
also work on the movement of
capital
also work on the movement of
human beings
as if we were so many cattle
grim travellers in dawn skies
see the beauty -- makes you cry inside
makes you angry and you don't know why
grim travellers in dawn skies
12 mercenaries got weapons primed
gonna take that African nation
in record time
you wonder why they bother, why
not leave it alone
they say "every man wants to retire to a
place he can call his own"
those grim travellers in dawn skies
see the beauty -- makes them cry inside
makes them angry and they don't know why
grim travellers in dawn skies
redness, richer than a rose
blooms against the backdrop of somebody's
white clothes
bitter little girls and boys from the
Red Army Underground
they'd blow away Karl Marx if he had the nerve
to come around
they're just travellers in dawn skies
see the beauty -- makes them cry inside
makes them angry and they don't know why
they're grim travellers in dawn skies
down on the plain of 10,000 smoke
stacks
trucks butt each other to establish
dominance
the newspaper next to me leans over
and says matter-of-factly
"sacred mountains towers above meadows"
uh huh and above us
grim travellers in dawn skies
i see the beauty -- makes me cry inside
it makes me angry and i don't know why
we're grim travellers in dawn skies
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:33 PM One band with a definite set of opinions about world events, The Clash, released a three-album set, Sandinista! in tribute to the leftist government in Nicaragua. Unfortunately, the album was a series of hits and misses, some great songs with a few filler tunes. However, the opening song introduced their listeners to rap in much the same way Blondie did:
The Magnificent Seven
Ring! Ring! It's 7:00 A.M.!
Move y'self to go again
Cold water in the face
Brings you back to this awful place
Knuckle merchants and you bankers, too
Must get up an' learn those rules
Weather man and the crazy chief
One says sun and one says sleet
A.M., the F.M. the P.M. too
Churning out that boogaloo
Gets you up and gets you out
But how long can you keep it up?
Gimme Honda, Gimme Sony
So cheap and real phony
Hong Kong dollars and Indian cents
English pounds and Eskimo pence
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Give it all you got!
You lot! What?
Don't stop! Yeah!
Working for a rise, better my station
Take my baby to sophistication
She's seen the ads, she thinks it's nice
Better work hard - I seen the price
Never mind that it's time for the bus
We got to work - an' you're one of us
Clocks go slow in a place of work
Minutes drag and the hours jerk
"When can I tell 'em wot I do?
In a second, maaan...oright Chuck!"
Wave bub-bub-bub-bye to the boss
It's our profit, it's his loss
But anyway THE lunch bells ring
Take one hour and do your thanng!
Cheeesboiger!
What do we have for entertainment?
Cops kickin' Gypsies on the pavement
Now the news - snap to attention!
The lunar landing of the dentist convention
Italian mobster shoots a lobster
Seafood restaurant gets out of hand
A car in the fridge
Or a fridge in the car?
Like cowboys do - in T.V. land
You lot! What? Don't stop. Huh?
So get back to work an' sweat some more
The sun will sink an' we'll get out the door
It's no good for man to work in cages
Hits the town, he drinks his wages
You're frettin', you're sweatin'
But did you notice you ain't gettin'?
Don't you ever stop long enough to start?
To take your car outta that gear
Don't you ever stop long enough to start?
To get your car outta that gear
Karlo Marx and Fredrich Engels
Came to the checkout at the 7-11
Marx was skint - but he had sense
Engels lent him the necessary pence
What have we got? Yeh-o, magnificence!!
Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi
Went to the park to check on the game
But they was murdered by the other team
Who went on to win 50-nil
You can be true, you can be false
You be given the same reward
Socrates and Milhous Nixon
Both went the same way - through the kitchen
Plato the Greek or Rin Tin Tin
Who's more famous to the billion millions?
News Flash: Vacuum Cleaner Sucks Up Budgie
Oooohh...bub-bye
Magnificence!!
IT'S F:censored:Y LONG ISNT IT?
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 03:39 PM Somebody Got Murdered
Someone lights a cigarette
While riding in a car
Some ol' guy takes a swig
And passes back the jar
But where they were last night
No-one can remember
Somebody got murdered
Goodbye, for keeps, forever
Somebody got murdered
Somebody's dead forever
And you're minding your own business
Carrying spare change
You wouldn't cosh a barber
You're hungry all the same
I been very tempted
To grab it from the till
I been very hungry
But not enough to kill
Somebody got murdered
His name cannot be found
A small stain on the pavement
They'll scrub it off the ground
As the daily crown disperses
No-one says that much
Somebody got murdered
And it' left me with a touch
Somebody got murdered
Somebody's dead forever
Sounds like murder!
Those shouts!
Are they drunk down below?
It's late, and my watch stopped
Some time ago
Sounds like murder!
Those screams!
Are they drunk down below?

One band associated with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was Def Leppard, with their debut On Through the Night. They were not quite of the faster-version-of-Sabbath variety, but they had a young fresh approach and tight songs that were not the typical epic affairs of the 70's.
Rock Brigade
Well, in the middle of the night
And the early morning light
You can hear them a million miles away
They'll be bangin' on their drums
Bangin' on your door
Waving their flags telling you to score
Watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Oh, no it's the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Look out for the rock brigade
Leading you away, away
So when they hit your town
You'd better get down
I'm telling no lies to you mister
'Cos they live for rock'n'roll
They'll try to steal your soul
Might even try to steal your sister, oh
So in the middle of the night
Or the early morning light
If you hear them comin' your way
Well you'd better watch your step
Don't step out of line
'Cos here they come one more time
Watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Oh no it's the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Look out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
You better watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
I say watch out for the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Keep your eyes on the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
Don't let your eyes off the rock brigade
(rock brigade)
They'll be leading you away, away, away

Same Old Scene
Nothings last forever
Of that I'm sure
Now you've made an offer
I'll take some more
Young loving may be
Oh so mean
Will I still survive
The same old scene?
In our lighter moments
precious few
It's all that heavy weather
We're going through
When I turn the corner
I can't believe
It's still the same old movie
That's haunting me
Young loving may be
Oh so mean
Trying to revive
The same old scene
Young loving may be
So extreme
Maybe we should try
The same old scene
(repeat 3x to fade)
Nothings last forever
Of that I'm sure
Now you've made an offer
I'll take some more
Over You
Oh baby this is nowhere
Wish I was somewhere - over you
Your sweet lips tell me there's no chance
No more romance - over you
Oh baby how can I go on?
Crying so long - over you
Where strangers look for new love
I'm so lost in love - over you
Some day yes it might come babe
When I'll be babe - over you
And always up to that moment
I will try to say I'm - over you
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 04:00 PM ABBA released Super Trouper, a wonderful collection of songs from the world's greatest pop band. But beneath the cheer in the title song and the upbeat dance rhythms, there was a feeling the good times were about to end....Their marriages were breaking up, and with it, so would the unity in the group.
The Winner Takes It All
I don't wanna talk
About the things we've gone through
Though it's hurting me
Now it's history
I've played all my cards
And that's what you've done too
Nothing more to say
No more ace to play
The winner takes it all
The loser standing small
Beside the victory
That's her destiny
I was in your arms
Thinking I belonged there
I figured it made sense
Building me a fence
Building me a home
Thinking I'd be strong there
But I was a fool
Playing by the rules
The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
And someone way down here
Loses someone dear
The winner takes it all
The loser has to fall
It's simple and it's plain
Why should I complain
But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you
Does it feel the same
When she calls your name
Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
But what can I say
Rules must be obeyed
The judges will decide
The likes of me abide
Spectators of the show
Always staying low
The game is on again
A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
The winner takes it all
I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand
I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
Seeing me so tense
No self-confidence
But you see
The winner takes it all
The winner takes it all
Super Trouper
Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me
But I won't feel blue
Like I always do
'Cause somewhere in the crowd there's you
I was sick and tired of everything
When I called you last night from Glasgow
All I do is eat and sleep and sing
Wishing every show was the last show
(Wishing every show was the last show)
So imagine I was glad to hear you're coming
(Glad to hear you're coming)
Suddenly I feel all right
(And suddenly it's gonna be)
And it's gonna be so different
When I'm on the stage tonight
Tonight the
Super Trouper lights are gonna find me
Shining like the sun
(Super Trouper)
Smiling, having fun
(Super Trouper)
Feeling like a number one
Tonight the
Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me
But I won't feel blue
(Super Trouper)
Like I always do
(Super Trouper)
'Cause somewhere in the crowd there's you
Facing twenty thousand of your friends
How can anyone be so lonely
Part of a success that never ends
Still I'm thinking about you only
(Still I'm thinking about you only)
There are moments when I think I'm going crazy
(Think I'm going crazy)
But it's gonna be alright
(You'll soon be changing everything)
Everything will be so different
When I'm on the stage tonight
Tonight the
Super Trouper lights are gonna find me
Shining like the sun
(Super Trouper)
Smiling, having fun
(Super Trouper)
Feeling like a number one
Tonight the
Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me
But I won't feel blue
(Super Trouper)
Like I always do
(Super Trouper)
'Cause somewhere in the crowd there's you
So I'll be there when you arrive
The sight of you will prove to me I'm still alive
And when you take me in your arms
And hold me tight
I know it's gonna mean so much tonight
Tonight the
Super Trouper lights are gonna find me
Shining like the sun
(Super Trouper)
Smiling, having fun
(Super Trouper)
Feeling like a number one
Tonight the
Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me
But I won't feel blue
(Super Trouper)
Like I always do

ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 04:03 PM On and On and On
I was at a party and this feller said to me
"Something bad is happening, I'm sure you do agree
People care for nothing, no respect for human rights
Evil times are coming, we are in for darker nights"
I said, "Who are you to talk about impending doom"
He got kinda wary as he looked around the room
He said, "I'm a minister, a big shot in the state"
I said, "I just can't believe it, boy I think it's great
Brother can you tell me what is right and what is wrong"
He said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
Over in the corner I could see this other guy
He was kinda flirty, he was giving me the eye
So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star
Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar
And as sure as hell this guy was coming up to me
He said, "Who am I and who are you and who are we
What's our situation, do we have some time for us"
I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus
He said, "If you're going somewhere can I come along"
I said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
Andante, Andante
Take it easy with me, please
Touch me gently like a summer evening breeze
Take your time, make it slow
Andante, Andante
Just let the feeling grow
Make your fingers soft and light
Let your body be the velvet of the night
Touch my soul, you know how
Andante, Andante
Go slowly with me now
I'm your music
(I am your music and I am your song)
I'm your song
(I am your music and I am your song)
Play me time and time again and make me strong
(Play me again 'cause you're making me strong)
Make me sing, make me sound
(You make me sing and you make me)
Andante, Andante
Tread lightly on my ground
Andante, Andante
Oh please don't let me down
There's a shimmer in your eyes
Like the feeling of a thousand butterflies
Please don't talk, go on, play
Andante, Andante
And let me float away
I'm your music
(I am your music and I am your song)
I'm your song
(I am your music and I am your song)
Play me time and time again and make me strong
(Play me again 'cause you're making me strong)
Make me sing, make me sound
(You make me sing and you make me)
Andante, Andante
Tread lightly on my ground
Andante, Andante
Oh please don't let me down
Make me sing, make me sound
(You make me sing and you make me)
Andante, Andante
Tread lightly on my ground
Andante, Andante
Oh please don't let me down
Andante, Andante
Oh please don't let me down

ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 04:18 PM Lay All Your Love On Me
I wasn't jealous before we met
Now every woman I see is a potential threat
And I'm possessive, it isn't nice
You've heard me saying that smoking was my only vice
But now it isn't true
Now everything is new
And all I've learned has overturned
I beg of you
Don't go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me
It was like shooting a sitting duck
A little small talk, a smile and baby I was stuck
I still don't know what you've done with me
A grown-up woman should never fall so easily
I feel a kind of fear
When I don't have you near
Unsatisfied, I skip my pride
I beg you dear
Don't go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me
Don't go sharing your devotion
Lay all your love on me
I've had a few little love affairs
They didn't last very long and they've been pretty scarce
I used to think that was sensible
It makes the truth even more incomprehensible
'Cause everything is new
And everything is you
And all I've learned has overturned
What can I do
Don't go wasting your emotion
Lay all your love on me
Don't go sharing your devotion
Lay all your love on me
The Way Old Friends Do
You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do
You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do
We can face it together
The way old friends do

Magic
Come take my hand
You should know me
I've always been in your mind
You know that I'll be kind
I'll be guiding you
Building your dream
Has to start now
There's no other road to take
You won't make a mistake
I'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you
From where I stand
You are home free
The planets align so rare
There's promise in the air
And I'm guiding you
Through every turn I'll be near you
I'll come anytime you call
I'll catch you when you fall
I'll be guiding you
You have to believe we are magic
Nothin' can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don't let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I'll bring all your dreams alive
For you
Dean Winchester 04-06-2004, 06:05 PM I LOVE XANADU!!!! Have it on cd and dvd. The movie was so bad it's great, and the music was so great it's great :)
Olivia Newton-John ruled pop for many years in the late 70's/early 80's
Dean Winchester 04-06-2004, 06:06 PM I also loved Abba's Super Trouper album, one of their best ever.
A shame that detractors only look at their 74-76 output to judge them on and ignore how they grew in the last few years. Super Trouper and The Visitors are timeless and still hold up.
Dean Winchester 04-06-2004, 06:07 PM while Xanadu was first an foremost an ONJ vehicle, don't forget the great music ELO had on the soundtrack too, such as The Fall and I'm Alive. Not a bad song on the entire album

Whatcha' tryin' a do to my heart?
Whatcha' tryin' a do to my heart?
You go around tellin' lies
And now you want to compromise
Whatcha' tryin' a do to my heart?
You Better Run! You Better Hide!
You better leave from my sight! Yeah
Whatcha' tryin' a do to my soul?
Whatcha' tryin' a do to my soul?
Well everything I had was yours
And now I'm closin' all the doors
Whatcha' tryin' a do to my soul?
You Better Run! You Better Hide!
You better leave from my sight! Yeah
I love you oh, I love you so
Can't you see it? Don't you know?
I can't stand your alibis
Your tellin' lies, you drive me wild! Yeah
I said, what are ya tryin' a do to my head?
Said, whatcha' tryin' a do to my head?
Well now I've gotta draw the line
Cause you ain't gonna take my mind!
What are ya tryin' a do to my head?
You Better Run! You Better Hide!
You better leave from my sight!
You Better Run! You Better Hide!
You better leave from my sight!
Let me go! Yeah
I said go away, and leave me alone!
I can't stand you no more!

You come on with a "come on", you don't fight fair
But that's O.K., see if I care!
Knock me down, it's all in vain
I'll get right back on my feet again!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Why Don't You Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Fire Away!
Well you're the real tough cookie with the long history
Of breaking little hearts, like the one in me
Before I put another notch in my lipstick case

They hide in the light, so you can't see their fears

Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child
Because Hell
Hell Is For Children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell Is For Children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh
It's all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
You're daddy's good girl, and don't tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and you'll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing
Because Hell

Treat Me Right
You want me to leave, you want me to stay
You ask me to come back, you turn and walk away
You wanna be lovers, and you wanna be friends
I'm losing my patience, you're nearing the end
One of these days you're gonna reach out and find
The one that you count on has left you behind
Don't want to be no martyr, with no one, no say
Oh my, my baby, before it's too late
Treat Me Right
Treat Me Right
Open your eyes, maybe you'll see the light
Do you think I'm a fool, well you better think twice
I've had enough baby, it's time you realized
That you can't have it both ways, it's no way to live
You've done all the takin', it's your turn to give
One of these days you're gonna reach out and find
The one that you count on has left you behind
Don't want to be no martyr, with no one, no say
Oh my, my baby, before it's too late
Treat Me Right
Treat Me Right
Open your eye's, maybe you'll see the light
Ooh, Ooh, Treat Me Right
You want me to leave, you want me to stay

You wanna be lovers, and you wanna be friends
I'm losing my patience, you're nearing the end

This next song I probably heard last over 20 years ago and I thought it was really cool:
Little Paradise
Can you see the view? Can you feel the heat?
I'm savin' no time for you, no time for me
You're up on the news, I'm wild in the streets
I'm under the lights, tonight I won't have to hide the need
But you got love in its place
In its own time and space
You got love in its place in your
Little Paradise
You got fashion secure in your own little world
Diamonds are forever for Hollywood girls
No need to cover, no reason to lie
Life without your Maserati is grounds for suicide
But you got love in its place
In its own time and space
You got love in its place in your
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
You got love in its place
In its own time and space
You got love in its place in your
You got love in its place
In its own time and space
You got love in its place in your
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
Little Paradise
Little Paradise

I'm stunned to see Olivia in this thread. She never gets any love these days. I have a couple of the midnight specials and they are fun to watch. The Xanadu special from 1980 always cracks me up because she is lip synching and even has a "fake" tear during Suspended in Time. It's so corny. I love it! :D

Romeo and Juliet
A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsus serenade
Laying everybody low with me a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it ?
Juliet says hey it's Romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack
He's underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it ?
Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget the movie song
When you wanna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet ?
Come up on differents streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals ?
Where you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me think and thin
Now you just says oh Romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet ?
I can't do the talk like they talk on TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything except be in love with you
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie I'd do the stars with you any time
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There's a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet ?
A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsus serenade
Laying everybody low with me a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it ?
Skateaway
I seen a girl on a one way corridor
Stealing down a wrong way street
For all the world like an urban toreador
She had wheels on on her feet
Well the cars do the usual dances
Sames old cruise and the kerbside crawl
But the rollergirl she's taking chances
They just love to see her take them all
No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd
In her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud
Hallelujah here she comes queens rollerball
Enchante what can I say don't care at all
You know she used to have to wait around
She used to be the lonely one
But now that she can skate around town
She's the only one
No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd
In her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud
She gets rock n roll a rock n roll station
And a rock n roll dream
She's making movies on location
She don't know what it means
But the music make her wanna be the story
And the story was whatever was the song what it was
Rollergirl don't worry
D.j. play the movies all night long
She tortures taxi drivers just for fun
She like to read their lips
Says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son
I swear she let a big truck graze her hip
She got her own world in the city
You can't intrude on her
She got her own world in the city
Cos the city's been so rude to her
Come slippin and a slidin
Life's a rollerball
Slippin and a slidin
Skateaway that's all
Shala shalay hey hey skateaway
She's singing shala shalay hey hey
Skateaway
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 07:24 PM Expresso Love
She gets the sun in the daytime
Perfume in the dusk
And she comes out in the night time
With the honeysuckle musk
Because she smells just like a rose
And she tastes just like a peach
She got me walking the wildlife goes
I'd do anything to reach her
And she was made in heaven
Heaven's in the world
Is this just expresso love
You know I'm crazy for the girl
She call me just to talk
She's my lover she's a friend of mine
She says hey mister you wanna take a walk
In the wild west end sometime
And I get trouble with my breathing
She says boys don't know anything
But I know what I want
I want everything
Well I feel so good cos I feel so good
And I feel so good cos it feels so right
I was made to go with my girl
Like a saxophone was made to go with the night
And she can raise one eyebrow
Put her hand on my hip
And I close one eye now
Sweat on her lip
And I surrender to the fever
I surrender to the will of the night
She love me so tender I got to believe her
Love ? Expresso love's alright
I don't want no sugar in it
Thank you very much
All wired up on it all fired up on it
Expresso touch
Hey maestro expresso
It's just another one just like the other one
Hey maestro expresso
Is this another one just like the other one
Solid Rock
Well take a look at that
I made a castle in the sand
Saying this is where it's at you know
Couldn't understand now
If I realised that the chances were slim
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in
I wanna live on solid rock
I'm gonna live on solid rock
I wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid rock
Well I'm sick of potential
I'm sick of vanity now
I'm sticking to essential reality now
I don't know what's worse
Try to make a silk purse
Living an illusion living in confusion
Well a house of cards
Was never built for shock
You could blow it down in any kind of weather
Now two solid rocks two solid blocks
You know they're gonna stick
Yeah they're gonna stick together
Because the heart you break
That's the one that you rely on
The bed that you make
That's the one you gotta lie on
When you point, your finger cos your plan fell through
You got three more fingers pointing back at you
I wanna live on solid rock
I'm gonna live on solid rock
I wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid rock
I'm solid rock now

Ex-friends, ex-lovers and enemies
I've got your case in front of me today
All sewn up
Ex-bosses you never let me be
I got your names and your numbers filed away
I've grown up
See me
Hear me
Don't you know you can't get near me
You can only hope to hear me on your radio
On your radio
You're gonna hear me on your radio.
Ex-teachers still coming through to me
Tough kids don't stop trying to kick me to the ground
I don't care
Go on just do what you do to me
You look so sick when you're pushing me around
You're nowhere
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 07:46 PM Hall and Oates released Voices.
I always liked this song because I remember Lisa Whelchel and Erin Moran singing this on (what little I saw of) the movie Twirl:
Kiss On My List
My friends wonder why I call you all of the time
What can I say
I don't feel the need to give such secrets away
You think maybe I need help, no, I know that I'm right
I'm just better off not listening to friends' advice
When they insist on knowing my bliss
I tell them this
When they want to know what the reason is
I only smile when I lie, then I tell them why
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
Because your kiss is on my list of the best things in life
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss I can't resist
Because your kiss it's what If miss when If turn off the lights
I go crazy wondering what there is to really see
Did the night just take up your time, 'cause it means more to me
Sometimes I forget what I'm doing, I don't forget what I want
Regret what I've done, regret you? I couldn't go on
And if you insist on knowing my bliss
I'll tell you this
If you want to know what the reason is
I'll only smile when I lie, then I'll tell you this
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss I can't resist
Because your kiss it's what If miss when If turn off the lights
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
Because your kiss is on my list of the best things in life
(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list
(Because your kiss) your kiss I can't resist
Because your kiss it's what If miss when If turn off the lights
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 08:00 PM Gary Numan released Telekon, which did not do as well as the previous album and the hit "Cars", but featured many great tracks depicting Numan's sterile robotic universe.
This Wreckage
And what if God's dead
We must have done something wrong
This dark facade ends
We're independent from someone
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to meet you, meet you
Soon
We write suggestions
Suggesting fading to silence
And that must please you
My mirror's tarnished with 'no-help'
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to meet you, meet you
Soon
(Japanese phrase - means "Goodbye, forever")
Turn out these eyes
Wipe off my face
Erase me
Replay 'The end'
It's all just show
Erase you
I need to I need to I need to
This wreckage I call me
Would like to frame your voice
This wreckage I call me
Would like to leave you, leave you
Leave you, leave you soon
(Japanese phrase - means "Goodbye, forever")
Telekon
Where is my outline I start to fade
No concentration means 'fail' these days
I leave the table saying 'I am real'
I feel the pressure like your eyes on me
Don't mention that name and books on love
I can't be sure, I can't be sure
You end on reel one
You end on reel one
You quote from 'anxious' and things we do
I need protection from the likes of you
Do you begin to see that I don't know
I live on memories that are hard to find
Send me a card and write 'I think of you'
I'll say you lied, I'll say you're lying
You are, you are
Tell me a secret I'm sure to fall
My dog runs A.W.O.L. I blame you all
We're in formation saying 'safe, safe, safe'
Turn up my collar and mix with dark
The speaker turns on me spot her eyes
It's hard to breathe, it's hard to breathe
You end on reel one
You end on reel one
You are, you are
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 08:03 PM At the end of 1980, Gary Numan announced he was no longer going to tour. Unfortunate, because he always came up with an amazing light show.
This danceable number is reminescent of "Heart of Glass" in the beginning:
Remind Me to Smile
We'll take a taxi to the show
We could report by phone
We could remind ourselves that
We must laugh
Reconsider: 'fame'
I need new reasons
This is detention it's not fun at all
Remind me to smile
You know, 'the old friends' line
It gets so I feel like
I'm in this cold, glass, cage
I've got the horrors
Check, over my shoulder
I punch the air and fight but
No-one's there
You you - Oh no
Old scars - don't show
We fall - you see
Crawl crawl - in love
I dive - so clean
Young things - don't scream
Toys toys - so far
Boys boys - you are
(Chorus)
Get off the car
Get off the phone
Move from my window, leave me alone
Keep your revivals
Keep your conventions
Keep all your fantasies that's all we are
I Die: You Die
This is not love
This is not even worth a point of view
In Echo Park, I
Pause for effect and whisper 'who are you?'
They crawl out of their holes for me
And I die: You die
Hear them laugh, watch them turn on me
And I die: You die
See my scars, they call me such things
Tear me, tear me, tear me
Now I have your names
Screaming 'you will suffer' and 'you're all too late'
Now I feel young
Does everything stop when the old TAPE fails?
They crawl out of their holes for me
And I die: You die
Hear them laugh, watch them turn on me
And I die: You die
See my scars, they call me such things
Tear me, tear me, tear me
But I'm still frightened by the telephone
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 08:10 PM The cover to I Die: You Die single:
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 08:14 PM The Aircrash Bureau
Hello, I'm the aircrash bureau
I bet you're so surprised to see me
I could specialise in rumours
I'll send shivers up your spine
Pilot, back, I need my squadron
I was flying before D-day
Now I'm warning you of falling
I'll tell you when you're going down
Sometimes I get these questions
It reminds me of the skin game
We used to stand around on corners
Saying 'well here we are again'
So now she motions closer
Now that's what I call romance
Someone's calling me but vaguely
You need the feeling not the man
This song is one of the saddest songs in the world:
Please Push No More
Now I'm behind glass
I'll talk to you
The telephone lines blind
You have defaced my face
I bet you laughed at me
You bright young things
And now I need no-one
I miss you, so
Please push no more
Please push no more
Now it's all over for sure
I'll walk back home
We must all come down
We all grow old
We are close, we are hurt
So that was love
And love she kills me
It needs to, so
Please push no more
Please push no more
Please push no more
Please push no more
ABlairican Pie 04-06-2004, 08:30 PM Bob Dylan's follow-up to his first born-again album, "Slow Train Coming" was Saved. While many Christians rejoiced at the new Dylan who had found his way, many old time fans were staying away in droves. Dylan was full on gospel-tent revival with his back-up singers on this album. While it was a comforting fact that Dylan had found a source of stability in his life, the music was a disappointment. Instead of the singing poet leading us on with the right questions, he seemed now to be in-your-face with only the answers--and like many preachers of that time, it was either his way or the highway, many listeners were hearing. Soon Christians would ignore the album and its heavy-handed-ness. This would be a common occurrence for many who had found the born-again experience: the moment can be so overwhelming that little consideration was given to one's creative life and maintaining a sort of balance.
Saved
I was blinded by the devil
Born already ruined
Stone-cold dead
As I stepped out of the womb
By His grace I have been touched
By His word I have been healed
By His hand I have been delivered
By His spirit I Have been sealed.
I've been saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
Saved
And I'm so glad
Yes, I'm so glad
I'm so glad
So glad
I want to thank you, Lord
I just want to thank You Lord
Thank You Lord.
By his truth I can be upright
By his strength I do endure
By His power I've been lifted
In His love I am secure
He bought me with a price
Freed me from the pit
Full of emptiness and wrath
And the fire that burns in it.
I've been saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
Saved
And I'm so glad
Yes, I'm so glad
I'm so glad
So glad
I want to thank you, Lord
I just want to thank You Lord
Thank You, Lord.
Nobody to rescue me
Nobody would dare
I was going down for the last time
But by His Mercy I've been spared
Not by works
But by faith in Him who called
For so long I've been hindered
For so long I've been stalled.
I've been saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
By the blood of the lamb
Saved
Saved
And I'm so glad
Yes, I'm so glad
I'm so glad
So glad
I want to thank you, Lord
I just want to thank You Lord
Thank You, Lord.

Dean Winchester 04-07-2004, 12:42 AM Ablairica,
I notice you've said many times (and just today in this thread) you're a big Abba fan, did you know that Agnetha Faltskog has a BRAND NEW all-English album? no US release yet, but will be easily found on import.
For non-Abba fans, they'll wonder "who cares", but Agnetha retired from music in the late 80's and as recently as 2 years ago, said she was finished with music forever. So this album is something none of us ever expected to come out. This is her first album in 17 years in any language.
a song clip is available at her official site, http://www.agnetha.se
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 08:45 AM That's great!! The last I heard, she was living in seclusion and had given up on music.

I am extremely happy for her. From what I've heard, she has gotten help for some of her problems and now she's doing better than she has in 20 years. I'm also surprised she has been able to relearn English so well. I saw a documentary on ABBA made in the late 90's and at the time, it had been said that Agnetha had practically forgotten the language.
I hope the album is a success for her, you never know, if this does well we might see a new Frida album in English as well :)
did you check out the clip at her site?

ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 09:51 PM The classic lineup of Yes had finally splintered in 1980 when Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman had both left the band. In their place was Trevor Horn (of the Buggles) on vocals and Geoff Downs on keyboards. The album this lineup of Yes produced was Drama, not quite the peak of Yes' music, but it had a few good moments, such as the following song:
Tempus Fugit
Born in the night
She would run like a leopard
That freaks at the sight
Of a mind close beside herself
And the nearer I came
How the country would change
She was using the landscape
To hide herself.
More in the mind
Than the body this feeling
A sense at the end
Of a circular line
That is drawn at an angle
I see when I'm with you
To navigate waters and finally answer to-yes.
If you were there you would want to be near me
Innocence, you could hold the materials
And though nothing would really be living
It would shock Your fall into landing light
In the north sky time flies fast to the morning
The cold of the dawn it meant nothing to us
You were keeping your best situation
An answer to-yes
(Yes, Yes) And the moment I see you
(Yes, Yes) It's so good to be near you
(Yes, Yes) And the feeling you give me
(Yes, Yes) Makes me want to be with you
(Yes, Yes) From the moment you tell me - yes!
If you could see all the roads I have traveled
Towards some unusable last equilibrium
Run like an athlete and die like a dead beaten speed-freak
An answer to all of your answers to-yes
In the north sky time flies faster than morning
The cold of the dawn it meant nothing to us
You were keeping your best situation
An answer to Yes
(Yes, Yes) And the moment I see you
(Yes, Yes) It's so good to be near you
(Yes, Yes) And the feeling you give me
(Yes, Yes) Makes me want to be with you
(Yes, Yes) If we wait for an answer
(Yes, Yes) Will the silence be broken
(Yes, Yes) Should we wait for an answer
(Yes, Yes) Do we leave it unspoken
(Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes . . .)
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 09:52 PM The Yes lineup as of 1980, Trevor Horn is on the far right:
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 10:00 PM As many artists of the 70's did when the new decade rolled around, Alice Cooper changed his musical image and sound to reflect the new wave trend. Which made sense, because Alice Cooper was a late 60's/early 70's "punk", it was only fitting he was an actual punk rocker for the 80's. It didn't quite work. His 1980 album Flush the Fashion was met with lukewarm reviews.
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 10:02 PM This song was very synth-new wave for Alice:
Clones (We're All)
I'm a clone
I know it and I'm fine
I'm one and more are on the way
I'm two, doctor
Three's on the line
He'll take incubation another day
I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones
All are one and one are all
All are one and one are all
We destroyed the government
We're destroying time
No more problems on the way
I'm through doctor
We don't need your kind
The other ones
Ugly ones
Stupid boys
Wrong ones
I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones
All are one and one are all
All are one and one are all
Six is having problems
Adjusting to his clone status
Have to put him on a shelf
All day long we hear him crying so loud
I just wanna be myself
I just wanna be myself
I just wanna be myself
Be myself
Be myself
I'm all alone, so are we all
We destroyed the government
We're destroyed time
No more problems on the way
I'm through doctor
We don't need your kind
The other ones
Ugly ones
Stupid boys
Wrong ones
I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones
All are one and one are all
All are one and one are all
I'm all alone, so are we all
We're all clones

I Thank You
You didn't have to love me like you did
But you did, but you did.
And I thank you.
You didn't have to love me like you did
But you did, but you did.
And I thank you.
But you took your love to someone else
I wouldn't know what it meant to be loved to death
You made me feel like I've never felt
Kisses so good I had to holler for help
You didn't have to squeeze it but you did
But you did but you did
And I thank you.
You didn't have to hold it but you did
But you did but you did
And I thank you.
Every day was something new,
You put on your bag and your fine to-do
You got me trying new things too
Just so I can keep up with you.
You didn't have to shake it but you did
But you did but you did
And I thank you.
You didn't have to make it like you did
but you did but you did
And I thank you.
All my life I've been shortchanged
Without your love baby it's a crying shame
But now I know what the fellas talking about
Hear me say that they been turned out
I want to thank you
I want to thank you
I want to thank you
Yes, I want to thank you
I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
Well I was rollin' down the road in some cold blue steel,
I had a bluesman in the back, and a beautician at the wheel.
We're going downtown in the middle of the night
We was laughing and I'm jokin' and we feelin' alright.
Oh I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Yes I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Easin' down the highway in a new Cadillac,
I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back.
They sportin' short dresses, wearin' spike-heeled shoes,
They smokin' Lucky Strikes, wearing nylon too.
Welcome back, we're nationwide.
Yeah we bad, we're nationwide.
Well I was movin' down the road in my V-8 Ford,
I had a shine on my boots, I had my sideburns lowered.
With my New York brim and my gold tooth displayed,
Nobody give me trouble cause they know I got it made.
I'm bad, I'm nationwide.
Girl I'm bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, I'm nationwide.
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 10:17 PM Fool For Your Stockings
Is it you again outside,
Just banging on the front door?
You say you had enough,
Now you're coming' back for more,
But that's alright.
I said that that's alright.
I may not want to admit it,
I'm just a fool for your stockings I believe.
Now I don't mind when you send money
and bring your girlfriends with you,
But how could one be so thoughtless to try
and handle less than two?
But that's alright.
I said that that's alright, baby.
I may not want to admit it,
I'm just a fool for your stockings I believe.
Now I'm tellin' everybody
It seems too good to be true:
Sweet things can always get sweeter.
I know mine did, how about you?
Yes, it's alright.
I said, yes it is, that's alright.
I may not want to admit it,
I'm just a fool for your stockings I believe.
Cheap Sunglasses
When you get up in the morning and the light is hurt your head
The first thing you do when you get up out of bed
Is hit that street a-runnin' and try to meet the masses
And go get yourself some cheap sunglasses
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
I spot a little thing and I followed her all night
In a funky pair of levis and her sweater's kind of tight
She had a west coast strut that was as sweet as molases
But what really knocked me out was her cheap sunglasses
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
(solo)
Now go out and get yourself some thick black frames
With the glass so dark thay won't even know your name
And the choice is up to you cause they come in two classes
Rhinestone shades and cheap sunglasses
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Stop This Game
Well I can’t stop the music
I could stop it before
Now I don’t want to hear it
Don’t wanna hear it no more
No more
I can’t stop the music
I could stop it before
Now I don’t wanna hear it
Don’t wanna hear it no more
All I wanna do is stop this game
It’s gonna really end
Stop this game
It’s such a touchy, touchy thing
Hey, livin’ with you
Is all I wanted before
I’ve changed, you didn’t
Don’t wanna see you no more
All I wanna do is stop this game
It’s gonna really end
Oh, stop this game
It’s such a touchy, touchy thing
Well we were walkin’ before we could crawl
And you were lovin’ just emotion just all
It’s just emotion wasn’t music at all
Now I can’t stop the music
Now I don’t wanna hear it no more

Generals and Majors
Generals and Majors ah ah
they're never too far
from battlefields so glorious
out in a world of their own
They'll never come down
till once again victorious
Generals and Majors always
seem so unhappy 'less they got a war
Generals and Majors ah ah
like never before are tired of being actionless.
Calling Generals and Majors
Generals and Majors everywhere
Calling Generals and Majors
your World War III is drawing near
Generals and Majors ah ah
They're never too far
away from men who made the grade
out in a world of their own
They'll never come down
until the battle's lost or made
Generals and Majors ah ah
like never before, are tired of being in the shade

Take This Town
Living in a rabbit tunnel,
Keep the doggie in her kennel,
Mustn't let her see the world.
Oh, no!
Don't treat her like that.
Oh, no!
Don't treat her like that.
Living under Mum and Daddy,
Carry hope just like a caddie,
Mustn't let them see you're killed.
Shout it clear for all to hear,
You won't shoot this bird down.
Shout it clear for all to hear,
We're going to take this town.
Turn a deaf ear to the orders,
Keep them as your perfect daughters,
Mustn't let them know their minds.
Turning on to only music,
Breaking from their childhood attic,
Mustn't let them open the blinds.
It's time she stopped being your ornament,
It's time she put that in the past for permanent.
You can't hold her if she wants to roam around,
You can't hold her dream and keep it gagged and bound.
We're going,
We're going to,
We're going to take,
We're going to take this,
We're going to take this,

Party Out of Bounds
SUPRIIIIIIZE! PAAAAAARTY!
Yeah, we just thought we'd drop in!
Where's your icebox?
Where's the punch?
Ew, house-a-tosis!
Who's to blame when parties really get out of hand?
Who's to blame when they get poorly planned?
Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoooo-ooooooooo.
Crashers get bombed, slobs make a mess.
Ya know sometimes they'll even ruin your wife's dress.
Crashers getttin' bombed. (Who's to blame?)
Can you pull it back in line?
Can you salvage it in time?
What can you do to save a party?
Parcheesi? Charades? A spur-of-the-moment
Scavenger hunt, or Queen of the Nile? (WOOOOOOOOOOH!)
Who turned out the lights! (WOOOOOOOOOOH!)
Bombed, crashers gettin' bombed
crashers gettin' bombed, bombed, bombed, bombed, well who's to blame?
Who's to blame when situations degenerate?
Disgusting things you'd never anticipate?
Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoooo-ooooooooo.
People get sick, they play the wrong games.
Ya know, it can ruin your name!
Crashers gettin' bombed. (Who's to blame?)
Can you pull it back in line?
Can you salvage it in time?
WOOOOOOOOOOOH!
It shouldn't be difficult!
Try not to condemn!
O.K. Who ordered pizza?
I'll be tactful when making the rounds
Be tactful when making the rounds
and maybeeee you can save a parteeeee.
Party gone out of bounds!
Gone out of bounds!
Party gone out of bounds!
Gone out of bounds!

Give Me Back My Man
She cuts her hair
and calls his name.
Wishin' everything could be the same,
like when she had him.
I'll give you fish,
I'll give you candy,
I'll give you everthing I have in my hand.
Walking out of Korvettes,
Package in her hand.
Motions to all the seabirds,
throws divinity on the sand.
I'll give you fish,
I'll give you candy,
I'll give you everthing I have in my hand.
Give me, give back my man.
Give me, give back my man.
Her head's in a whirlpool,
spinnin' round and round.
If she don't get her man back
she's gonna drown.
I'll give you fish, (Where's that motorboat?)
I'll give you candy, (My man's in the motorboat)
I'll give you everything I have in my hand.
(Her man's in the motorboat, give her back her man.)
Give her, give back her man,
Give her, give back her man. (repeat)

Nobody's putting up a fight
I got my bell, I'm gonna take you to hell
I'm gonna get you, Satan get you
CHORUS:
Hell's Bells
Yeah, Hell's Bells
You got me ringing Hell's Bells
My temperature's high, Hell's Bells
I'll give you black sensations up and down your spine
If you're into evil you're a friend of mine
See my white light flashing as I split the night

Hell's Bells, Satan's comin' to you
Hell's Bells, he's ringing them now
Hell's Bells, the temperature's high
Hell's Bells, across the sky
Hell's Bells, they're takin' you down
Hell's Bells, they're draggin' you around
Hell's Bells, gonna split the night
Hell's Bells, there's no way to fight, yeah

Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoo
You're living in your own Private Idaho
Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
Don't go on the patio.
Beware of the pool,
blue bottomless pool.
It leads you straight
right throught the gate
that opens on the pool.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the path, beware the gate,
watch out for signs that say "hidden driveways".
Don't let the chlorine in your eyes
blind you to the awful surprise
that's waitin' for you at
the bottom of the bottomless blue blue blue pool.
You're livin in your own Private Idaho. Idaho.
You're out of control, the rivers that roll,
you fell into the water and down to Idaho.
Get out of that state,
get out of that state you're in.
You better beware.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.
Keep off the patio,
keep off the path.
The lawn may be green
but you better not be seen
walkin' through the gate that leads you down,
down to a pool fraught with danger
is a pool full of strangers.
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
where do I go from here to a better state than this.
Well, don't be blind to the big surprise
swimming round and round like the deadly hand
of a radium clock, at the bottom, of the pool.
I-I-I-daho
I-I-I-daho
Woah oh oh woah oh oh woah oh oh
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
Get out of that state
Get out of that state
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
livin in your own Private Idaho.
One of my favorites by the B-52's:
Strobe Light
Where's my telephone?
"Is that you baby?"
"Yeah."
"Got something to tell you."
"Oh, what?"
I want to see you tonight
I want you to walk in the door
I want you to lay on the floor
Cause tonight's the night
We make love, under a stobe light
Underneath the strobe light
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Strobe light - Woah oh oh
Strobe light - Woah oh oh
Yeah!
But the light goes to my head!
Everything I see is red
Baby when I kiss your hair
I feel electricity in the air
I'm gonna kiss your eyes
Then I'm gonna kiss your neck
Then I'm gonna kiss your tummy
The I'm gonna kiss your pineapple
Tonight's the night
For love under the light
Strobe light, strobe light
Underneath the strobe light
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Wanna make love to you under the strobe light
Strobe light - Woah oh oh
Strobe light - Woah oh oh
Yeah!
I just wanna make love to you
I just wanna make love to you
Underneath the strobe light
Strobe light, strobe light
Strobe light, strobe light
Strobe light
Strobe, strobe, strobe, strobe, strobe light

ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 11:00 PM But alas, the guardians of decency and good taste were making the rounds by the late 80's. Killjoys such as Jerry Falwell were making the rounds to clean up the country with the Moral Majority Sanitation Service.

Meanwhile, there was division in the ranks of KISS.
The Famous Chicken!!! If you don't know what I'm talking about here's the story.
Years ago (I'm talking the 70s and 80s) the San Diego Padres had a guy that dressed in the suit you see in that pic and he would put on a show for the fans. He'd do stuff like mess with the umpires, stuff like that. When I saw him in a Padres game last September he messed around with the umpire, gave an umpire an eye test, shaved Phil Nevin, got stripped, collided with a guy in a Colorado Rockies uniform and did a slow motion replay of it, danced, and he brought these kids dressed in chicken suits and lifted their legs at an umpire while the Men Without Hats song "Pop Goes the World" played. Funny stuff.
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 11:10 PM The perfect antidote to the perceived failures of the Carter Administration was one man whom Rev. Falwell helped get elected: Ronald Reagan. Liberals and democrats cringed at the one man who symbolized the backlash against all progressive changes--and it was based on a not-so-subtle religious agenda. Reagan was a veteran actor, which meant that he would inspire confidence by his stately looks. But underneath, many feared would his measures what do to a withered rock culture. After all, it was Reagan who said in the 60's as governor of California:
"A hippie is a young man who dresses like Tarzan, has hair like Jane, and smells like Cheetah."
Oh, that witty Ronnie!! So perfectly in touch with his younger constituents!! ohno:
In the next few years, all would see how perfectly in tune the new Chief Executive would be with the rock and roll subculture...
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 11:24 PM As the country began a swerve to the conservative right, Christian music began to have a new-found popularity. It was no longer just the folky country rock of a few years earlier, but a smart, sophisticated pop sound. And many "secular" mainstream record labels wanted a piece of that pie.
One devoted Christian musician and songwriter, Keith Green, was averse to the trend of non-Christian labels scooping up on those whose talents belonged to the Lord alone. It was a compromise that he felt would lead to a watering down of the evangelistic message. Green was one singer who made a huge impact on young people with his overt message of dedicating oneself totally to Christ, and to foresake anything that would hinder that goal. Initially, in the early 70's he was touted to become the next teen idol--until Donny Osmond beat him to the punch. He began a musical journey that would take him from West Coast clubs and run the gamut of Eastern religions until he checked out the Christian message--and his life was dramatically transformed. He began to promote his records on the Sparrow label until he decided that it was dangerously close to being "too worldly"--it was making too much money off albums when he felt the Gospel should be free. He began a series of newletters with articles called the Last Days Newsletters and built a following with albums such as "So You Want to Go Back to Egypt" and "No Compromise."
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 11:30 PM One Christian band that did NOT fit neatly in the evangelistic mold was Daniel Amos, named after the Old Testament Prophets, and led by vocalist Terry Scott Taylor. Early on the band was a satirical country-rock band that eventually embraced its Beatlesque roots. On their 1980 album Horrendous Disc, they downplayed the overt evangelistic message for one that was more subtle, artistic, and rocking, such as on songs like "I Love You" and "Hound of Heaven."
ABlairican Pie 04-07-2004, 11:35 PM Another Christian artist who bucked the trend of being safe was Amy Grant, Christian music's first official hottie. Her music was relatively safe and palatable, but her stage dialogue was one of total honesty. She brought young audiences closer together--and appalled older folks--by admitting her hormones were on 200 and she still wanted to talk about Jesus.
ABlairican Pie 04-08-2004, 10:03 PM Blue Oyster Cult released Cultosaurus Erectus, which featured a song inspired by science fiction writer Michael Moorcock:
Black Blade
I have this feeling that my luck is none too good
This sword here at my side don't act the way it should
Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave
Hauling me faster and faster to an early, early grave
And it howls, it howls like hell
I'm told it's my duty to fight against the law
That wizardry's my trade and I was born to wade through gore
I just want to be a lover, not a red-eyed screaming ghoul
I wish it'd picked another to be its killing tool
Black blade! Black blade!
Forged a billion years ago
Black blade! Black blade!
Killing so its power can grow
There's death from the beginning to the end of time
And I'm the cosmic champion and I hold a mystic sign
And the whole world's dying and the burdens mine
And the black sword keeps on killing 'til the end of time
Black blade! Black blade!
Bringing chaos to the world we know
Black blade! Black blade!
And its using me to kill my friends
Black blade! Black blade!
Getting stronger so the world will end
Black blade! Black blade!
Forcing my mind to bend and bend
The black blade
Forged a million billion years ago
My cosmic sword goes on for eternity
Carving out destiny
Bringing in the lords of chaos
Bringing up the beasts of Hades
Sucking out the souls of heroes
Laying waste to knights and ladies
My master is my slave
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
ABlairican Pie 04-08-2004, 10:18 PM On the eve of their North American tour, John Bonham, Led Zeppelin's extraordinary drummer, was found dead after a night of heavy drinking. All future plans for Led Zeppelin's tour were put on hold until the band issued a statement that they could not continue without Bonham. The remarkable run of Led Zeppelin was over. Devastated by the loss of their dear friend and one of rock's greatest musicians, the members of Led Zeppelin went their separate ways. Jimmy Page would not pick up his guitar for six months. No one could replace Bonzo.

ABlairican Pie 04-08-2004, 10:27 PM As we've mentioned before, December 8, 1980, was the worst day ever experienced in rock and roll, and in music.
What was truly ironic about that evening was that when I first heard about it from my younger brother, what was my reaction? Are you ready for this? Utter contempt.
Having been a born-again Christian for over a year (I was 18 at the time), I had been taught to regard John Lennon and his comments about Christianity as "blasphemy", etc. But what I did not realize until a little later was that it was THESE VERY SAME ATTITUDES that led to his murder.
The next weekend, I went up with my friends to a Beatles party at an apartment poolhouse here in Auburn where we listened to Beatles music all afternoon and munched on heated-up frozen pizza and drank soda pop. And it was there that I realized: I finally got it. The Beatles made sense. They were, and are, the greatest. It made me realize how important John Lennon was, his gift of music. Their music began to hit me like it never had before.
