View Full Version : Annoying Thing Ward & June Did
Corvetteguy 03-17-2004, 09:06 PM Is there anything that Ward and June ever did in punishing or scolding the boys that ever annoyed you and you didn't see the point ? I always hated how they made the boys attend social functions against their will and how they freaked over the least little thing. Like the time Beaver had to tell his teacher that he had seen the test he took before because he used an old one of Wally's to study by and didn't know it would be the same test. And let's not forget Beaver having to sell the sports car he won in a contest and wearing the monster sweatshirt to school. Compared to things going on in the world today, Ward & June should have been lucky to have to boys that were so well behaved.
desilu #1 03-17-2004, 09:18 PM I haven't seen every episode but I can say that the episode where June gets trippy because The Beav wouldn't eat his brussel sprouts was somewhat far fetched but I think for the most part Ward and June are very decent and understanding parents. As for the social events they were forced to attend, I think that was more June's doing because of her upbringing or it could have been just the way things were back then.
junecleaver 03-17-2004, 11:06 PM I too think June getting mad because of the brussel sprouts was really far-fetched and stupid. And every time June got upset because she found a girl's number in Wally's jacket. I have friends and family that grow pot in thier backyards...Compared to kids today i think Beaver and Wally were perfect angels and they really never did anything wrong, except for Beaver who gave june the silent treatment. But...like Desilu #1 said...That could have been how it was back then.
duluthduke 03-17-2004, 11:33 PM Ward and June couldn't have known how young people were today, because they didn't live today. I think parents of every generation always think the young people of each era behave badly!
As for June in the "brussels sprout" episode, I can hardly stand to watch it! She was way over the top, and I think Ward thought so too!
duluthduke 03-17-2004, 11:35 PM Another annoying thing they both did was deprive the boys of any privacy whatsoever! I am from roughly the same era and my parents never searched my room, and barged in if the door was shut!
desilu #1 03-17-2004, 11:37 PM Ok...if Ward thought she was over the top my question is....Why didn't he put his foot down with her? He was the man of the house wasn't he? And don't say it wasn't written that way I already know that.
duluthduke 03-17-2004, 11:41 PM Being a dominating "man of the house" wasn't in Ward's character, I don't think. Remember he said he was going for a walk or something.
junecleaver 03-17-2004, 11:44 PM I would love to see ward put his foot down sometime.....
desilu #1 03-17-2004, 11:56 PM I agree June was over the top and the snippy way she acted with Ward as well. I have always been under the impression that women didn't do that back then. So I just felt that since the writers made June over react to the brusel sprouts issue than they should have pushed the envelope a little and have Ward put his foot down especially when she threatened to take away the football game. And I think he was the typical "man of the house" he just seemed to back down there and I couldn't understand why. It was also a possibility that he was so angry that he went for the walk instead of further upsetting her because he is always so considerate of her feelings.
duluthduke 03-18-2004, 12:27 AM That's right, he was very considerate of her feelings. I think that is the biggest misinterpretation people have about LITB. To a casual viewer Ward comes off as being really gruff and stern, when he's actually pretty soft hearted.
OTOH, many people think June is so sweet and demure, but in reality she could be pretty demanding! :)
Mijada 03-18-2004, 06:56 AM I didn't like how June would make dates for Wally, like telling some girls mother "I'm sure Wally would love to take your daughter to the dance" She should have consulted with Wally first before making those kinds of decisions.
Michael [hXc] 03-18-2004, 08:33 AM In a few episodes when someone called for Wally and Beaver on the phone, Ward or June would pick it up and make an excuse for them. I also didn't like when they looked in Beaver's diary.
1954Boomer 03-18-2004, 10:14 AM Related to the "Brussels Sprouts" "fiasco," I think June went way overboard in the "Wally's Haircomb," episode, where Wally sported that 'jelly roll' looking haircut.
While I am having difficulty citing specific episodes, I think Ward sometimes went way overboard in getting angry at either Wally or Beaver about stuff.
GidgetCleaver 03-18-2004, 03:49 PM To me "way overboard" happened in my house. I would have given anything for parents like Ward and June.

I hear ya...same here!
One thing I didn't understand and I guess it goes back to lack of privacy,I don't know why they didn't let Wally have the "guest room".I mean if you have the extra room,I think a teen boy would've appreciated his own "space",to do whatever teen boys do... :D
vze3t9q9 03-21-2004, 12:22 PM Mijada. Gee I wished my mom had encourage me to find a date for a dance. It was tought being Miss Wallflower. I think in a way it was good for Wally to be socialable. Unless of course it June chose a Fast Girl.
number6 04-15-2004, 05:25 PM Maybe Ward and June had 2 good children because they were excellent parents.
duluthduke 04-15-2004, 09:23 PM Excellent but nosy!

Well there is nothing wrong with encouraging your child to go to dances and be more sociable but to go behind your childs back and make a date for him/her is wrong IMO. Besides, Wally had plenty of friends and was a good athlete and really didn't need his mom to get dates and friends for him.

.... I also didn't like when they looked in Beaver's diary.
As I recall, Beaver, in that episode, was out one night and neither Ward nor June nor Wally had any idea where he was...They'd contacted several of Beaver's friends, and none of them knew where he was either...Ward and June were very worried about the Beav, and they thought that the diary might give them a clue as to where he might be, or where he'd been spending his time... Beaver hadn't called to let them know he'd be late, so I think in this case, reading Beaver's diary was merely the desperate act of parents trying to figure out where their son was...I don't think you can fault Ward and June for that... if Beav had just let them know where he was, there would have been no reason for them to "snoop" in the first place...
Also, CCRYDER1968, re your comment about "One thing I didn't understand and I guess it goes back to lack of privacy,I don't know why they didn't let Wally have the "guest room".I mean if you have the extra room,I think a teen boy would've appreciated his own "space",to do whatever teen boys do... I think that in at least one episode, either Beaver or Wally actually did have the guest room as his own, but they both decided that they liked sharing a room better than not...I think it was probably a first or second season episode, but I'm not sure...

yeah,I'm sure they liked being in the same room when they were younger, but I'm pretty sure by the time he was 16,17,he would've liked his own space...:)

Michael [hXc] 04-22-2004, 12:45 PM I know, all of the really good ones I find on Google are so large and the dimentions have to be 150 by 150 exactly.
BlueEyes1767 04-25-2004, 09:06 PM After watching the one where Wally gets a car, I was annoyed with Ward. Since Wally worked and saved to get the best car he could for the money, Ward could have at least chipped in for a paint job. June was annoying while she was fussing about Wally getting a car in the first place. And then acting like it was such a revolting experience to ride in it. Ward wore a suit and she had on a nice dress but they still had to change to go to dinner in Wally's car.
One of June & Ward's more annoying episodes........IMO
duluthduke 04-25-2004, 09:58 PM Yes but ward did really help Wally with the car. He paid for the insurance and steered him clear of those crooked salesmen!:D
Michael [hXc] 04-26-2004, 07:54 AM Wally and Ward had a great father son relationship, didn't they?
