OMG!!! This is UNBELIEVABLE! I especially can't believe CBS is leaving! How are people going to watch their programming?

A few months back, a Birmingham, AL TV station, owned by Echostar was taken off the air for a few days from Dish over a dispute.

Not a big loss, IMO, neither is N@N

CBS???!!!! I still can't get over this.

From www.dishnetwork.com

Stations owned by Viacom have proposed excessive rate increases we feel are unreasonable. We always strive to control costs on behalf of our customers. We continue to work tirelessly to negotiate with Viacom so you do not lose your channels.

Dish Network's site doesn't list CBS or TV Land as channels that may be leaving.

BET - Comedy Central - MTV - MTV2
Nick Games & Sports
Nickelodeon/Nick at Night (East and West)
NOGGIN - VH1 - VH1 Classic

I have basic extended cable which used to offer only 48 channels, which were your basic networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, USA, Lifetime, etc. But then a few months ago they extended it even further and added 20 extra channels, including Comedy Central and E! I was very happy about that but we were still planning on getting Dish Network and we've been thinking about it a lot lately, but thank god I found out how they are screwing people over by getting rid of so many good channels. I think I'll just stick with my regular cable. I have more than enough channels to satisfy me.

I'm just curious... how many channels does Dish Network offer?

Dish Network has three basic programming packages. Top 60, Top 120, and Top 180. It's $29.99 for Top 60 with local channels, $39.99 for Top 120 with local channels, and $44.99 for Top 180 with local channels(subtract $5 for without local channels).

This shows which channels are on each package:

http://204.95.170.116/dishsite/images/CUST100ChannelCard.pdf

The channels with the black square are on Top 60, Green for Top 120, and Red for Top 180.

DirecTV has Total Choice with Local Channels, about 130 channels, for $39.99, without local is $36.99.

EchoStar service pulls local stations, Nickelodeon in continuing dispute about rates.
March 9, 2004: 6:35 AM EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - EchoStar Communications Corp. pulled from service Tuesday 16 of Viacom's local CBS stations and 10 of its national channels after the companies failed to agree on contract terms and prices.

Viacom (VIA.B: Research, Estimates) said in a statement it was "dismayed and disappointed" by the action, which affected channels such as MTV and Nickelodeon, after a deadline expired early Tuesday.

Satellite company EchoStar (DISH: Research, Estimates) said it would like to transmit CBS programming on its DISH network again, but both parties stood their ground in the dispute.

The move, which analysts say affects 1.6 million EchoStar viewers in major cities such as New York and Los Angeles, follows a lawsuit from EchoStar in January after a four-month deadlock over rates and conditions.

EchoStar said Viacom was illegally forcing its DISH Network to carry cable networks it does not want in order for it to retain the right to transmit CBS.

"DISH Network would always have a place for CBS, and we're willing to pay for retransmission rights," said EchoStar Chief Executive Charles Ergen, but he said Viacom was "holding the public airways hostage."

EchoStar said Viacom had also asked for rate increases of up to 40 percent over the length of its contract with the company.

Viacom urged EchoStar customers to switch to another distributor, and said the satellite company should be able to cope with a rate rise since it had already raised its own fees to end-users.

"They recently hiked their subscribers' bills by as much as $3 a month. Yet they are unwilling to consider paying an additional six cents a month per subscriber for the right to carry our channels," Viacom said in a statement.

EchoStar said it would provide a $1 monthly credit to customers who lose programming while the channels are unavailable.

Here I was so jazzed at the thought of getting Directv... come to find out, they only offer a 3 Room package, while Dish offers 4. This house really couldn't adjust to having only 3 tvs. We already downsized from 5 to 4 when we got this dish in September.

I hate digital cable in this county. It is completely stupid. Although it is looking better than Dish in its new state. But alas, this road doesn't offer cable.

That was actually an exaggeration anyways, because the channels that have been taken off of DISH, aren't even available on digital cable in this area--except for MTV. I wouldn't want digital cable again as long as I live here.

I am very glad that I have digital cable! I get about 200 channels (14 HBO's + 17 Showtimes for about $80 plus taxes) They gave me Movie Channel and FLIX + FOX Movies for FREE. In actuality I pay $80 for about a $100 package.

Time Warner has I-Control Favorites and movies that you can rent for 24 hours without a VCR, but have full VCR like functionality over them. For $5.00 more you can get the DVR, which gives you the ability to record up to 50 hours of programing without tapes or VCR's, get PIP on any TV, record/pause LIVE TV, create your own instant replays, and customize your own line-ups for later viewing. Satalite doesn't over that. You can by a TIVO with dish, but I have heard that the DVR is better because the recorder unit/cable box are all a part of the same unit. It's expensive, but you get the latest technology. With a dish, you are stuck with what you get, and can't upgrade when technology changes. When your warrenty expires with Dish, you will be charged for service calls. Cable gives you free service and support. The only time you may have to pay a truck-trip charge is when they don't find a problem with their equpment or if they have to come out to pick something up. (service disconnect) But, that's true with any company. As far as the cost increases go, that's just inflation. But I always liked cable better than dish.

Just a buck? Oh well, as long as TV Land is still there.

And if you don't get CBS...buy some rabbit ears.

That's more that we pay.

We get about 200 some channels, 60 some music-only channels, all the Encore channels (except Encore East itself) with the package, west coast feeds of a lot of the channels we'd have to pay extra for (figure that one out!), HBOs and Cinemax (5). Plus KTLA, WWOR, WSBK, etc. All for like $75.

Digital cable is expensive. DirecTV and Dish both are much cheaper. It's $90 a month here for Digital. That's OUTRAGEOUS. We have regular cable for $30 a month.

Not really, I have digital cable with Time Warner, and we only pay $60 a month that's with the DVR box, and that's including the digital variety package which includes the Encore channels like Action, Mystery, Lovestories, etc.... We get Discovery Health, Discovery Wings, and other discovery channels, and lots of other channels, I have compared, we get alot of the same channels that DirecTV and Dish offers and our Digitial Varitey package is only $10.25 a month, plus the DVR box which is $5.00.

Also we can get HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and other movie packages for about $10 a month extra, which I have compared to most, and that's cheap.

So I love my digital cable, and would never change.

I get dish network and I'm mad with this cause I loved to watch n@n even thought they took of FOL I'm still mad about that but I do like watching Cosby and I did like watching VH1 Classic that was my favorite music channel. But I do remember someone saying that TVland was going to be taken off, well all the channels have been off for like 3 days now and I still have TVland so is that going to be taken off later or what? If it is I hope they wait till after the tvland awards but even if they take off that channel I'll be pissed but thank goodness I still have lifetime if I couldn't watch the division then I would get rid of my dish all together.

From Dish's website:

DISH Network sincerely regrets that all MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and VH1 programming is currently unavailable. Viacom owned CBS stations are also unavailable at this time.

These channels and CBS stations, owned by Viacom, have proposed excessive rate increases which we feel are unreasonable. Viacom is demanding rate increases nearly 4 times the rate of inflation for various cable channels, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars in fees that would increase the cost of our services to you.

EchoStar, Viacom nearing deal, officials say
Dispute resulted in channels taken from satellite watchersThe Associated Press
Updated: 1:59 p.m. ET March 10, 2004WASHINGTON - DISH Network owner EchoStar and Viacom Inc. are nearing settlement of a dispute that took popular channels away from millions of satellite TV customers, officials with the companies said Wednesday.

advertisement

Martin D. Franks, executive vice president of Viacom-owned CBS Television, told lawmakers at a hearing that he expected a solution in a “very timely fashion.”

“I can give great assurance that we are making progress,” Franks said.

David Moskowitz, EchoStar’s senior vice president and general counsel, said after the hearing that he, too, was optimistic.

“I’m hopeful we’ll be able to reach an agreement and we’ll reach an agreement very soon,” he said.

EchoStar Communications Corp. pulled the plug on CBS programs in more than a dozen cities Tuesday and also dropped Viacom’s cable channels — including MTV, Nickelodeon and BET — from its satellite network. As many as 9 million customers in all 50 states were affected.

Members of the House telecommunications subcommittee said they hoped the dispute could be settled before the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament begins next week. CBS will broadcast the games.

“Let’s cut to the chase and see if we can’t come to an agreement, especially as March Madness begins,” said subcommittee chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich.

At issue is EchoStar’s contention that it is being required to carry several Viacom-owned cable channels in exchange for the right to also carry 18 CBS-owned stations in 16 markets.

EchoStar also said Viacom has sought rate increases up to 40 percent over the length of the contract, which would total potentially hundreds of millions of dollars. Viacom officials disputed that, saying EchoStar was fighting over what amounted to 6 cents more per customer per month.
