As promised, here's another one of my sappy fics! :D This is an alternative ending to "Sweet Sorrow." Come on, we ALL know that CD didn't REALLY want to go on that vacation with Bryan! ;) ;) I know that you already know the beginning of this from the show, but I just had to include it because it's so great.

"Do you see anything?" CD DeLorenzo called to her partner. They were in an empty synagogue, investigating a hate case that involved a bomb. It was near the end of a highly stessful day, and they just wanted to find the bomb and disable it so they could go home.

"No, nothing yet," Nate Basso replied.

CD stepped up onto the platform, and walked past the pulpit. Something started slowly beeping, and a feeling of terror washed over her. "OK, uh, the good news is, I found the bomb."

"And the bad news?" Nate asked.

CD looked at him. "I'm standing on the pressure pad the detonates it, and if I move---"

"Don't, don't move!" he yelled and rushed over to her. Nate's heart fell to his stomach as he realized that he could lose CD forever, in just a short while.

CD tried to be brave. "Nate, get out of here!"

At that moment, Nate knew that he loved her, and couldn't live without her. He had to do something. "Quiet! Let me think. You would have hidden me in the attic, right?"

"No, I wouldn't have, I lied," she replied sarcastically. "Just get out of here!"

"Hush! Let me think, alright?....OK, this is what we're going to do. You're going to take one foot off the pad, as I put one on, and then we're going to do the same thing with the other foot, OK?"

"Why?" CD asked uneasily.

"OK, just listen, here, I wanted to be on the bomb squad and I studied all this stuff, but first I need you out of the way. You ready?"

"OK."

"On three, left foot first. Alright---1...2...3. OK. !...2...3...OK." They switched places.

"OK."

"OK."

"Now what?" CD said, assuming Nate had a plan.

Nate pulled all the courage and nobility together that he could muster, while he was terrified. "Now you run like hell."

CD became enraged that. Feelings of fear, hopelessness, and loss welled up inside of her. She knew that Nate was trying to save her life, but now she didn't want to live if he wasn't there with her. "OK, you bastard, you did NOT want to be on the bomb squad!" she yelled at him.

"CD, CD, get out of here! I do NOT have time for this!" he yelled back.

"Neither do I! God!" She was mad at herself, more than mad at him. She thought fast, trying to find something similar to Nate's weight to put on the pressure pad. All the pews were bolted to the floor, but she spotted the altar table. With all her strength, she dragged the heavy table.

"It's not going to work," Nate said.

"It's going to have to," she replied, and slid it on the pad as Nate stepped off. The clock showed 10 seconds left. Nate grabbed CD's hand, and they ran like light to the exit. Just as the temple exploded, Nate wrapped his arm across her back, and CD did the same to him. They broke through a side door. The temple was on fire, in pieces, around them. They held each other tightly as they ran. Nate and CD felt a surge of relief course through their bodies, and felt a bond that was stronger than steel between them. They had almost died together, each laying down their life for the other. They stopped and looked desperately into each other's eyes, each knowing what the other was thinking and feeling. They quickly came together for an embrace. They clutched together, hanging onto each other, not needing to say anything.

Everything had quieted down, and CD and Nate went back to the division to do the paperwork. CD's boyfriend arrived to pick her up for their trip. CD had wrestled with the decision to go or not. She knew that he wasn't right for her, but she fet she needed a fling since her divorce from her cheating husband. Now, since the bombing, she felt even more unsure about the trip. She thought about Nate. Deep down, she knew that she loved him, but she was a cop who always went by the rules. She just didn't know what to do.

Deep down, she knew that she loved him, but she was a cop who always went by the rules. She just didn't know what to do.

Finally Bryan appeared, and CD guessed that her decision had been made for her. She got up from her desk, and picked up her coat. CD walked over to Nate, smiled, and kissed the top of his head. Nate looked up at her, and tried to muster a whimper of a smile. He loved the feeling of her lips on him, but was sad about her taking a vacation with her boyfriend. He had had a faint hope that after the bombing, she wouldn't go, but he guessed that she probably didn't feel the same way about him that he felt about her. He knew that she really didn't care that much for Bryan, and that Bryan wouldn't care for her nearly as well as Nate would. He watched CD and Bryan walk out of the division together, and he felt a deep sadness and lonliness well up inside of him. He didn't feel like working anymore, and didn't want to go back to his empty apartment. Nate put his jacket on and headed to the Anchorside. He sat down at a barstool and ordered a stiff drink. He knocked it down in one swallow, hoping to dull the pain. Then he ordered a beer and started to sip it. Ordinarily, he didn't drink to cope with his problems, but tonight was different.

A guy was sitting next to him who had obviously had one too many. In a slurred voice, the guy asked Nate, "What's her name?"

Nate looked at him. "Um, what?"

"The lady. What's her name? Is it Jennifer? Usually it's Jennifer."

Nate smiled and shook his head. "No, sorry."

"Is it Heather? Sometimes it's Heather."

Nate stared at his drink, and then slowly looked back at the guy. In a bittersweet way, he said, "It's Candace. But, we uh, call her CD." Nate then stared off into the distance.

A short while later, the other guy left the bar and Nate ordered another beer. He was trying to keep from thinking about what CD was doing at that moment, but he seemed to inflict it on himself as a sort of therapy. He was staring at a picture from his wallet. It was of him and CD smiling, and their arms across each other's shoulders. A tear escaped his eye, and slid down his cheek. It then dropped onto the picture. 'It's never gonna happen, man. Just forget about it,' he thought. What he didn't see was CD peering in through the window.

'I knew it,' she thought. 'He wanted me to stay just as much as I did.' She walked in the door, and kept her eyes glued to Nate. She was nervous, but knew what she had to do. CD sauntered over to him with a sad smile on her face. She sat down on the barstool next to him, rested her arms on the counter, and looked at him.

Nate still stared at his beer. 'It smells like her, and feels like her, but it couldn't be her. Wishful thinking. Put it out of your head,' he thought.

CD finally spoke. "Hi."

'What, some girl is hitting on me, even thought I look like I obviously look like I don't want company? Maybe it's a hooker. An arrest could really liven up this night,' Nate thought. He turned and looked at the woman next to him, and his eyes flew open wide. "CD! What are you doing here?!"

CD's eyes seemed to reach into his, looking at him seriously. "I decided not to go. Not after today. I couldn't go. I couldn't do it. " She spoke softly, slowly, and meaningfully.

Nate gazed back at her, being quite surprised. "Why?"

"You're the one I want." CD placed her hand behind his neck, and brought her lips to his. She kissed him with a passion she had never known. Nate eagerly returned the kiss. The kisses continued on, and they felt a year of pent-up tension and love being released. Nate felt her tongue make its way into his mouth, which he gladly accepted. He wrapped his arms around her, and brought one hand up into her hair. CD's other hand gripped his back, and then began to rub it. After a minute, they pulled apart to breathe. Panting, and with their lips bright pink, they studied each other's faces for signs of approval. "I'm the one you want?" Nate asked, still shocked.

"Yes," CD replied.

"I want you, too."

"Good." They kissed again. Nate paid his tab, and they stood up to leave. Nate took her hand in his, and they left for the car.

Nate took her hand in his, and they left for the car. Since he'd had a few drinks, CD drove. She pulled in at a secluded spot along the Bay, and parked. Nate put an oldies radio station on, which was playing "At Last." CD and Nate looked at each other longingly again, and leaned in to kiss.

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

At last the skies above are blue
Well, my heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I could call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I had never known

Well, you smile, you smile
Oh and the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine at last
At last.

They spent a while necking in the car. Nate could hardly believe that this was happening. Here he was, making out with his beloved CD. It was now well past midnight, and they had been together for almost 16 hours now. They had almost died together, CD had left for a trip with another man, and now they were exploring each other's tonsils like there was no tomorrow. It's amazing how the edge of death brings things into perspective. CD could hardly believe what she was doing, either. Was she, CD DeLorenzo, actually professing her love for her partner? She was amazed at herself, and knew that it must be the real thing to make her do it.

Eventually, they broke apart, and CD rested her head on Nate's shoulder. Her arm lay draped across his chest, and Nate held her protectively in his arms. "CD, I love you," he softly murmured into her hair.

She smiled and cooed, "I love you, too, Nate." They remained silent for a while, and CD said, "When you got on that pressure pad today, I was scared to death of losing you. I couldn't imagine my life without you. And then, I felt this wonderful bond with you when we made it out alive...I knew that no one but you would have done that for me. You were ready to die in my place. And I thought, 'how many people find someone, ever, in their whole lives, that would do that? If you're lucky enough to find that person, who loves you that much, shouldn't you accept it and do something about it?'"

Nate felt this surge of joy overcome him at her words. "I felt the same way. All I could think of was how to save your life. And then when you ended up saving mine, and we got out together just in time, I'd never felt closer to anyone on the planet, than I was to you. Than I am to you. I have loved you since the day I met you, Candace."

CD paused, soaking in the realization. She could hardly believe it, but she knew that Nate was sincere. She knew him inside and out, and trusted him more than she ever thought she could trust someone. She could see in his eyes that he spoke the truth. "I know," she said. "And I have, too."

Nate gazed back into her sapphire blue eyes, that sparkled with love. He cupped her face and gave her another kiss. Then he looked back at her, still holding her tight. "CD, I......CD........" he stammered.

"Nate, what is it?" she asked, slightly worried.

"CD...Candace...you want to get married?"

Aww, thanks! :D That song has been playing on the local lite rock station all the time lately, and I just had to get the lyrics! Of course, you know what two people I think about everytime I hear it...;) ;) OK, new page means more fic!

"Nate, what is it?" she asked, slightly worried.

"CD...Candace...you want to get married?"

CD stared back at him, in shock. Then she smiled and said, "We could go to Vegas."

Nate smiled broadly and said, "I take that as a yes?"

"Yes. Most definately, yes!" CD exclaimed. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.

Before they knew it, Nate and CD found themselves on a plane, hurtling towards Las Vegas. It was now about 5 Saturday morning. They sat in their seats, holding hands, whispering, giggling, nuzzling, and occasionally kissing, oblivious to the people around them. They barely even noticed when the stewardess talked to them. Once they landed, they realized they were famished, as neither had gotten dinner the night before. CD and Nate stopped at an airport restaurant for breakfast. Then they went to find an all-night chapel, seeing as it was now only about 8 AM, and most didn't open until later.

Nate and CD settled on the Island of Paradise Wedding Chapel. Nate whipped out his credit card and paid for the premium package, which included a veil, rings, flower bouquet, the actual service, and 2 night's stay in the honeymoon suite of a local resort. They each then went into the bathroom to freshen up. By now they were very sleep deprived, but didn't care. When they were ready, CD put on the veil, and held the bouquet. She and Nate walked into the chapel. A man dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and khaki pants officiated the ceremony. 'Well, at least it's not an Elvis impersonator,' Nate thought to himself. It was a quick, impromptu wedding, but again, they didn't care. All they cared about was that they loved each other and wanted to get married.

"Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?" the man asked.

CD gazed at Nate, grinning and her eyes shining. "I do," she replied.

"Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do," Nate answered, smiling at CD. He squeezed her hands in excitement.

"CD, repeat after me," the man said to her, and she said after him, "I, Candace, take you, Nathan, to be my husband. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. I promise to love, honor, and cherish you, til death do us part."

They grinned, and Nate repeated after the officiator, "I, Nathan, take you, Candace, to be my wife. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. I promise to love, honor, and cherish you til death do us part."

CD then took one of the rings and slid it onto Nate's left ring finger. "With this ring, as a token of my love and affection, I thee wed," she stated.

Nate picked up her ring, and CD noticed that her rings from Paul were still on her finger. As a single woman living in San Francisco, she kept them on as a sort of safeguard. CD stuck her finger in her mouth, and pulled the rings off with her teeth. She then took them out and threw them over her shoulder, hearing them clang against the wall and drop to the floor. Nate laughed, and placed the new ring on her finger. "With this ring, as a token of my love and affection, I thee wed," he said.

Then the officiator said, "By the power vested in me by the state of Nevada, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Nate gave CD a devilish grin, took her in his arms, dipped her, and kissed her passionately. CD hung onto him and returned the kiss. Then they quickly walked out the door of the chapel into the lobby, and the employees threw confetti at them. Nate and CD laughed, and ran to their rental car. Nate opened up the passenger door for CD, and then went around to the driver's side. A speaker blared in the parking lot of the chapel, playing "Chapel of Love."

Nate and CD checked in at the hotel, and they hurried to their room. Nate opened the door and looked at CD, smiling. She grinned back, and kissed him on the temple. Nate picked her up in his arms, and said, "And now, Mrs. Basso, here is our budoire!" CD giggled and, and he carried her into the room. He placed her gently down on the bed, and she sank into the soft bedcovers. Nate pulled them back from underneath her, and they slipped inside them. They started kissing and undressing each other. "Is this really happening?" Nate murmured as he sucked on her neck.

CD smiled. "I think it finally is." She started to move her hands further down his body.

"I love you so much, CD," he moaned out loud.

"Not as much as I love you," CD giggled.

"Oh, I don't think so. Let's just say that after we went through today, we love each other the same amount," he replied with a grin.

"Sounds like a dream come true, Nate," she whispered.

"You're the dream come true, love." Then he began to administer some very "sweet loving."

After they made love for the first time together, Nate and CD crashed asleep. They were so exhausted and sleep deprived. Their bare bodies nestled together, and their arms were wrapped around each other.

About 9pm, CD woke up and remembered that she was lying next to Nate. She smiled and thought, 'Oh, my god! I'm married to Nate! We actually did it! And he's so cute....look at him, sleeping there. He looks so happy. Like he's a kid at Christmas.' She brought her fingers up to his face and lightly touched his features with her fingertips. She noticed her wedding ring, and then saw a matching one on Nate's finger. His hand rested on her stomach. CD smiled at the sight of their rings.

Nate felt her hand on his face and started to wake up. "Mmmmm...." he mumbled, slightly smiling. "CD? Is that you?" his eyes were still mostly closed.

"Yes, I'm here," she murmured.

Nate opened his eyes and grinned at her. "My dream has come true, finally," he said.

"Mine, too," she replied. Nate kissed her, pulling her on top of him. CD grinned, kissing him back. "I love you so much," CD said.

"I love you, too," he replied, and flipped so he was on top of her, and they made love again.

After that, they got up, showered, and put their clothes back on. "Let's go find something to eat," Nate said, and they went to have a late supper. They then went to a 24-hour Walmart to get Nate some toiletries and a change of clothes. CD had her bag, since she was planning on going away, anyway, but Nate had beeen wearing the same thing for 2 days now, and he had considerable stibble on his face and neck. Realizing that they were still tired from the ordeal of the past 2 days, they then returned to their suite for love and sleep, and love again.

Awww i just love those two love birds!!!!! And now it's time for a baby, right Tara????;) lol Post more!!!

LOL, I don't think they'll get that far in this fic. This is a fairly short fic, because I originally wrote it while taking a break from Change of History. Thanks for all the sweet replies! Here's more! :)

Sunday passed without much event. Nate and CD were wrapped up in and mesmerized with each other. Sunday night, they went to a night club for dinner and dancing. Monday morning, they woke up to the sunlight pouring in through the window and hitting them in the eyes. Nate glanced at the clock on the nightstand beside him, and he saw that it was a little after 8. Then the thought hit him that it was Monday. 'Oh, crap,' he thought.

CD's head laid on one of his arms, and Nate picked up his cell phone off the nightstand with the other. "Who are you calling?" she asked.

Nate dialed and said, "Captain. We're supposed to be at work today."

CD swallowed hard as she thought about what trouble they were in, and looked up at Nate. The phone on the other end of the line picked up. "McCafferty," Kate said.

"Hi, Cap, it's Nate," he said into the phone. He pulled CD close to himself, so her head was now next to his. CD's arm stretched across his muscular chest.

"Hi, Nate. I guess you're calling to say that you're going to be late," Kate said.

"Uhh, not quite..."

"What do you mean, 'not quite'? Are you going to be late or not?"

"Well, I'll be really late. In fact, I won't be in until tomorrow."

"Are you feeling OK?"

"Never better," Nate said without thinking, and grinned at CD.

Kate got frustrated. "Then why on earth do you need today off? Last time I checked, you didn't ask for any vacation time."

"Well, I kind of went somewhere for the weekend, and I lost track of the time."

"Nate, that's really irresponsible. We're going to have to talk about this when you get back. Where are you, by the way?"

"Same place CD went."

"Umm, what? And where is that?"

Nate looked at the phone and said, "Vegas. We got married." With that, he turned off the phone. CD laughed, and Nate laughed with her. They kissed, and dove back under the covers.

Back at the SFPD Felony Division, Kate stared at her phone in shock. Jinny, Magda, and Raina had been sitting in her office for the whole call. "What's wrong, Captain? Where's Nate?" Raina asked, concerned.

"He's in Vegas. With CD," Kate replied weakly.

Jinny and Magda exchanged glances. "Do you believe him?" Jinny said.

"Yeah, I guess so...but that's not all. He said they got married."

Raina squealed, and Magda said, "Wow, some weekend...wait. I thought CD went away with that lawyer guy."

"Guess she got confused?" Jinny said and laughed.

"I didn't even know that CD and Nate like each other that way," Raina said.

"I did," Magda replied.

"Yeah, where have you been?" Jinny added.

Raina rolled her eyes. Kate was staring at the wall. "Two of my inspectors married each other...I mean, it's happened before, but not any of mine. I guess it was inevitable, though, the way Nate and CD are together," Kate said.

"And they did go through that bomb scare together. CD said that Nate was going to die for her," Raina said.

"I should have known that those two would wind up together," Kate said.

Jinny sighed. "Weeeeell, we should get back to work. We'll grill 'em tomorrow!"

That was great!!!!!! I just loved everyone's reaction when they found out CD and Nate were married!!!! And i still think CD and Nate should have a baby!!! Or two......lol Post more!

CD and Nate finally dragged themselves out of their honeymoon suite by noon. "Next time we go to Las Vegas, we should actually, you know, leave the room once in a while!" Nate said and laughed.

CD laughed, too, and said, "I didn't hear you complaining, though, by doing what kept us from leaving the room."

"Oh, no no no. No complaints whatsoever. My compliments to the love goddess." Nate smiled and planted a big wet kiss on CD's neck. She giggled. They then left for their flight home.

"Um, honey?" CD inquired. She and Nate were on the plane for the short ride back to San Francisco.

'Yeah?" Nate replied, and looked at his wife.

"Where are we going to live? I never thought about it, because we got married so fast, but do you want to move in with me, or do you want me to go to your place?"

Nate smiled and said, "Sweetie, I really don't care, as long as we're together. We could live in a mud hut and I'd be happy."

"Awww......" CD cooed and looked at him with a face that made his heart melt.

"You could move in with me, but I'm not sure you'd be thrilled with it. It's a guy's, a SINGLE guy's apartment....well, you've been there, so you know!"

CD laughed. "Yeah, I guess you're right. You don't have much taste in home decorating, true. Or housekeeping!"

"Hey! I do alright----"

CD cut him off. "But you do have excellent taste in women," she said with a grin.

"Only since I met you," he replied and kissed her.

"OK, my apartment it is," she murmured against his lips.

After they landed, Nate and CD went to Nate's apartment to get a carload of his clothes, accessories, and toiletries, which they then took to CD's apartment. He then began to make plans for his move. CD made some dinner, which they ate together by candlelight and soft music. Once the last dish was washed, Nate began to walk out of the kitchen and into the living room. CD followed him and caught him. They smiled, and CD turned him so that his back was to the wall. She then pinned his broad shoulders with her hands, and crushed her mouth on his. Nate returned the kiss, delighted albeit surprised. He felt very turned on by her aggression. When CD pulled away, she smiled at him. "How do you like that, big guy?" she purred seductively. He put his hands through her hair, resting them on the back of her head, and pulled her towards himself to kiss her. She moaned into his mouth, and started caressing his back. She pulled away just enough to breathe against his lips, "I'll take that as a yes."

"Definately," he replied, and kissed her again. She fumbled with his shirt buttons, trying to undo them, and his hands flew underneath her shirt. They started moving down the hallway towards the bedroom, kissing and undressing along the way.

Tuesday morning, CD and Nate got up, showered, dressed, ate breakfast, and went to work. They walked into the Felony Division and were greeted by surprise. Raina, Jinny, and Magda threw rice at them, while shouting, "Congratulations!" at them, along with Kate. Kate stood there, watching and laughing. Nate and CD held their arms up to shield themselves from the rice and laughed.

"So----don't keep us in suspence! Tell us EVERYTHING!" Raina exclaimed.

Nate and CD, laughing, walked over to their desks. CD sat in her chair, and Nate rested on her desk. "Well, we got married," CD replied, giggling.

"No, DUH. We know that! How did it happen so fast?" Jinny retorted.

"Uh, well, we just decided, after the bomb and all, that we couldn't go on like we were anymore, and so we, uh---" Nate rambled.

CD chuckled and cut him off. "What Nate is trying to say is I realized that he loves me, and that I love him, so I told him. We got swept up in the moment, and decided to fly to Vegas and get married right away, the sooner the better. So we did."

"Well, congratulations, you two. I'm very happy for you," Kate said with a smile and hugged CD. Nate and CD grinned at each other, and then took each other's hand.

"So, let me see the ring!" Magda said, and walked over to CD.

"Oh, we just have the wedding bands. No engagement ring, because everything happened so fast," CD replied.

Nate smiled sweetly at his bride and said, "Oh, you'll get a ring, honey. I promise. Diamonds are forever, just like us." CD smiled back at him.

Jinny joked, "Aww, I give it a month."

"Very funny," CD said to Jinny with a chuckle and rolled her eyes. She then turned to Nate and said, "I don't need diamonds, Nate. I've got you, and that's all that I really want."

Yeah, it snowed here Monday night and Tuesday night. I woke up Tuesday morning, seeing I had to clean off my car, and I was ticked! LOL. Thanks for all the SWEET replies! :)

Friday night, Nate took CD out to dinner. When they got back to the car, Nate pulled out a blindfold and tied it around CD's head. "What's this?" she asked with a smile.

"A surprise. Wait and see." He drove for several minutes, and then parked. "Stay there, I'll help you out of the car," he said. Nate got out, walked around to the passenger side, and opened the door. He held CD's hand and she stood up. Then he removed her blindfold. "Take a look," he said.

CD scanned her surroundings. "What should I look for?" she asked.

"Oh, come with me," he replied and took her hand. Nate led her into a jewelry store, and CD's jaw dropped in astonishment.

"N-N-Nate---what are we doing here?" she mumbled.

"You know why we're here. Look at this counter. You can pick any one of these rings. And if there aren't any here that you like, we can go anywhere you want."

"Oh, Nate....you are too sweet. You really ARE Mr. Romantic."

Nate laughed, and CD smiled. "In honor of our one-week anniversary, I want to buy you the most beautiful, perfect engagement ring."

With a laugh in her voice, CD replied, "But we're not engaged anymore."

"So what? We were---for about 12 hours. Every married woman should have a diamond engagement ring."

CD pored over the display of diamond rings, her eyes shining. She looked like a little girl in a candy store. "How much can we afford, Nate? I don't want to spend all your savings."

"It's OK, really, CD, as long as you don't go insane or anything....what do I have to spend my money on? Besides, I've been thinking about this for a while," Nate grinned.

CD looked at him, curiosly, and smiled. What do you mean, you've been thinking about this for a while?"

"I think you know what I mean, honey. Shortly after I first met you, I started browsing the jewelry ads in the Sunday paper."

"Oh, yo did not! You're making that up!" CD laughed.

Nate held his hands up and smirked, "Hey, it's the truth, I swear!"

CD laughed, shook her head, and continued to look at rings. After a few minutes, she said to the clerk, "May I see this one, please?" She tried it on.

"Do you like it?" Nate asked, his hand resting on the small of her back, and looking at her hand.

"Yeah. It's nice. What do you think?"

"I think it's gorgeous. Just make sure that it's what you want."

CD gazed at her hand. The ring was beautiful. It was a princess-cut solitaire, with little chips next to it. She tilted her hand, and the gem caught the light and sparkled. "We'll take it," CD finally said. She handed it back to the clerk, and kissed Nate. "I love you," she said.

"And I love you. I want you to be happy."

"Oh, I am. Believe me, I am," CD affirmed with a grin.

Nate took the ring, smiling, and slipped it on CD's finger. She smiled back at him. They wrapped their arms around each other, and kissed with passion and love.

OK, even though only ONE person replied and wants a sequel, since this is HER fic after all, ;) I'll start on it! I don't have a lot yet, but here's some more.

~ A month later ~

Nate knock on his bathroom door, and checked his watch. "CD? Are you OK?" he asked through the door.

"Yeah. Why do you ask?" CD replied. On the other side of the door, CD sat on the edge of the bathtub and held the pregnancy test in her hand. She anxiously raked her fingers through her hair.

Nate sighed. "Well, because you've been in there for a while now!"

"Uh, sorry about that. Do you need to use the bathroom?"

"No, that's OK, I'm fine. But if you're not feeling well, maybe you should take something for it."

CD sighed and muttered to herself, "Nothing I take will make this go away."

"What was that?" Nate asked.

"Um, nothing, nothing. I'll be right out," CD replied. She looked at her watch, and then the test. Positive. 'Now how the hell am I supposed to tell Nate about this?' she thought to herself. Nate went back to the living room to check his e-mail. A few minutes later, CD walked into the room and picked up her coat. "I'm going out for a little while. Do you need anything while I'm out?" CD said as she put on her coat.

"Um, no, thanks. Where are you going, honey?" he asked.

CD sadly looked at him. "Just out, sweetie. I need to do something. I'll be back in a little bit. You can wait up for me, if you want," CD answered and gave her husband a kiss.

Nate was a little worried, but he trusted her. "Well, OK then. I'll wait up for you. I love you."

CD smiled at him. "I love you, too, Nate."

Jinny heard a knock on her door and opened it. "CD! What are you doing here?" Jinny asked.

CD scared and lonely. Jinny was a little surprised to see her like that. She hadn't seen CD be anything but happy since Nate came into her life. "Can I come in?" CD asked.

"Of course! Come on in," Jinny replied, and led her to the sofa.

"Is Teddy home?" CD said. Jinny and Teddy had recently decided to get back together, and were now living together.

"Yeah, he is, but he's just watching TV in the bedroom."

"Well, I won't be long. I just needed to talk to you about something."

"Oh, that's OK. Take all the time you need. I was going to make some coffee. Want some?"

CD opened her mouth to say "yes," but thought better of it. "Uh, no thanks, I'm good."

Jinny sat down on the chair across from CD. "So....you wanted to talk to me about something?"

"Uh, yeah...." CD tucked her hair behind an ear and sighed. "Jin, I don't know who else to talk to about this. I mean, Nate is my best friend, so I would ordinarily go to him if I needed to talk about something, but this is the one thing I can't talk to him about."

Jinny knew this must be something bad if she couldn't tell Nate. CD told Nate everything. "What's wrong, CD?" Jinny asked, concerned.

"I'm pregnant, Jinny," CD stated, with a wobble in her voice. She fought to keep back tears.

Jinny grinned broadly. "That's so great, CD! I'm so happy for you and Nate! I didn't even know you guys were trying."

"We weren't."

"Well, that's OK. I'm sure Nate will be absolutely thrilled. You don't have to worry about that."

CD sighed, and a tear rolled down her cheek. "It might not be Nate's."

The smile quickly faded from Jinny's face, and she brought her hand up to her mouth. "Oh my god. Brian."

All CD could do was sadly nod. "I was dating Brian when I got together with Nate, remember? Either one could be the father. And it's not like I can just tell Nate that he's the dad without knowing for sure. It'll be pretty obvious when it's born if it's not his."

"Whew. Yeah, you're right about that. Are you sure you're pregnant?"

"I took the test 3 times," CD replied and started to sob into her hands.

Jinny moved over next to her. She held CD, and let her cry on her shoulder. "Wait a minute----I thought you had your tubes tied!"

"Yeah, tell my tubes that," CD muttered. "Damn doctors must've screwed it up."

Jinny let CD cry for a while, and then said, "What do you want to do?"

"I don't know."

"It's just, Nate needs to know. It might be his, after all."

"I know. I know. I'm just scared."

"CD, he loves you. You know that."

"Yeah, I know that he loves me. I'm just scared that when he finds out that it might not be his, he'll leave me."

"CD!" Jinny sighed. "He KNEW that you slept with Brian when he married you! It's not like you cheated on him! It'll be OK."

"I sure hope you're right, Jin."

Meanwhile, Nate kept thinking about CD. She had been acting strange all day, and now she went somewhere and wouldn't say where. He picked up the phone and gave Teddy a call.

The phone rang at Jinny's, and Jinny yelled, "Honey, could you get that, please?"

"Sure, babe," he replied. "Hello?" Teddy said into the phone.

"Hey, Ted, it's Nate. How's it going?"

"Pretty good, thanks. You?"

"Well, I'm a little worried about CD at the moment. Has Jinny mentioned anything about her lately?"

"Actually, CD's here right now."

Nate felt relief wash over him. "What did she say?"

"I don't know. They're kind of having a private discussion."

Nate's face fell. "Oh."

"But I think you should get over here, man. She's crying."

"She's CRYING?! What about?"

"I was going to ask you the same thing. OK, Nate, what did you do?"

"How the hell should I know?! She's barely talked to me all day!"

"OK, well, I'm not sure if I heard right, but...."

"WHAT?!"

"I think she said she's pregnant."

Joy filled Nate's heart, and it skipped a beat. "I'll be right over!"

Teddy laughed. "Alright, see you in 5."

awwwwwwww!!! okay, again, how in the WORLD can u stop there?!!! *whiny baby voice* I WANT MORE NOOOOOOOW, DAMMIT!!!! :mad: o dear, i apologize for that outburst! :eek:

5 minutes later, there was a knock at Jinny's door. "I'll get it!" Teddy called out and ran to the door. He opened it and up and Nate grinned at him and stepped inside. Jinny and CD looked up, and CD's heart sank as she saw Nate walk towards her. She quickly tried to brush away her tears.

Nate hated to see CD unhappy. "Aww, honey, what's wrong?" he asked as he sat down next to her and put his arm around her. Jinny watched CD to see how she would react.

"It's no big deal," CD replied. She didn't look at him.

Teddy motioned to Jinny, that they should give Nate and CD some privacy. Jinny nodded, and they left the room. Nate sighed and pulled a tissue out of his pocket. He dabbed at her eyes, and then put the tissue in her hands.

"CD....you can't fool me. I know you, remember? Tell me what's wrong."

CD looked at him, and then buried her face in his shoulder. "Naaaaate.....I think I'm pregnant."

A huge grin spread across Nate's face. "That's FANTASTIC, honey! Why would you cry about that?"

"Um....I thought you wouldn't want it," CD said and watched his reaction.

"Oh, sweetheart, that's silly! Of course I want it! It's wonderful! Why would you think I wouldn't want it?"

CD didn't know what to say. "I, uh....I don't know. No reason, I guess," CD lied.

"OK, well, at least we're clear now. Hey---how about I take you and the baby out for some ice cream?"

CD tried to force a smile. "OK...sounds good." Nate took CD's hand and they stood up. CD called out, "Jinny, Teddy, you can stop eavesdropping now, like I know you are. We're done."

"OK! Goodnight!" came the reply from the kitchen, amongst some giggles. CD and Nate just chuckled to each other and left.

After they had some ice cream, Nate and CD went home. CD went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. A few minutes later, she came back out, looking very upset. Nate looked up from his magazine. "CD?" he said, worried.

"Nate....I'm bleeding."

Awww, don't cry! :( Well, I decide to lift the cliffhanger on both of the fics today, so since I have another few minutes til my next class, here it is!

CD went into the bathroom to get ready for bed. A few minutes later, she came back out, looking very upset. Nate looked up from his magazine. "CD?" he said, worried.

"Nate....I'm bleeding."

"You're WHAT?! Oh my gosh, we have to get you to the doctor!" he exclaimed in response and rushed over to her. They quickly sped over to the ER.

When CD finally got seen, they ran some tests to find out what was wrong. The doctor came back into the examining room. "What's wrong with me, doc? Is my baby OK?" CD asked.

"Well, Mrs. Basso, you didn't have a miscarriage."

"Oh, thank god. But wait---I didn't?! Then why am I bleeding?"

"You're not pregnant. You're just having your normal period."

CD was in shock. This all was just too much to deal with in one day. "Wait. Hold it, BACK UP!!!" she demanded. "What the hell do you mean I'm not pregnant?! I took 3 tests, and they all came back positive!"

"What you had was a false-positive."

"A what?"

"A false-positive. It's when your hormones are off in such a way that it gives a false reading of pregnancy hormone levels. That's all."

CD struggled to take this all in. It had been such a confusing day. Although she had been very worried that she was pregnant with Brian's baby, she now felt a little disappointed that she wasn't pregnant at all. 'After all, it might have been Nate's,' she reasoned with herself.

CD checked out and then went back to the waiting room to see Nate. As soon as he saw her, he jumped up. "Are you OK? Is the baby OK?!" he asked anxiously.

"Yeah, I'm fine. But it turns out there never was any baby."

Nate's face fell. "What do you mean, there was never any baby?"

"It means that I never was pregnant. The test was wrong."

Nate felt extremely disappointed, as well. He tried not to show it, though, because he didn't want to make CD feel bad. "Oh, um....I'm so sorry, honey," he said and tried to make her feel better. He hugged her, and kissed her hair.

CD was so frustrated with herself. 'At first I was crying because I thought I was pregnant, and now I'm crying because I'm not. What's wrong with me?' she thought. "I'm sorry, Nate. I can tell you're disappointed, too."

Nate put both hands on her shoulders and looked her squarely in the eye. "Sweetheart, you don't have anything to be sorry for. These things happen. You couldn't disappoint me, no matter what. OK?"

CD nodded, and tried to force a smile. She brushed away the last tears.

Nate said, "Now let's go home. You must be exhausted."

CD smiled at him. "OK." Nate smiled back at her, slung his arm over her shoulders, and led her out the door.

The alarm clock went off the next morning and CD smacked it off. Nate's arm was draped over CD's stomach, and his face was buried in the pillows. "You want to call in sick today?" he mumbled.

CD extracted herself from him and climbed out of bed. "No, that's OK. I'm fine. Let's just go to work."

Nate pulled the pillow off his face and sat up. "I don't know, honey. You had a pretty hard day yesterday."

CD sighed and rolled her eyes. "Nate, I just want to FORGET about it, OK?! Geez! You're driving me nuts."

Nate felt a little wounded. He couldn't understand why she had been snapping at him. "OK! Fine! I was just trying to help."

"Well I don't need your help!" CD snapped.

"Fine, that's just great, fine. If that's the way you want it, CD, then that's the way you get it!" he shot back and started walking towards the bathroom. "I was only looking out for you, you know," he muttered and slammed the bathroom door behind him.

CD sank back down on the bed and stared at the door that had been abruptly shut in front of her. She rubbed her eyes. 'Why am I such a bitch?' CD thought to herself, and wanted to kick herself. She heard the shower start to run, and then let herself into the bathroom. She quietly slipped off her clothes and then stepped into the shower behind Nate.

Nate heard her and spun around. A smiled crossed his face. "What are you doing?"

"I need a shower, too," she replied with a little smirk and reached for the soap. As she did, she brushed her body lightly against his. "I'm sorry I've been such a bitch, Nate."

"So you're admitting it now, huh?" Nate replied with a smirk and a twinkle in his eye.

CD chuckled. "Yeah, I do....it's just been one of those days."

"It's OK, honey. I understand," he said and slightly smiled at her. He took the washcloth and slowly dragged it across her back, and then up and over her shoulders. Then he started kissing her neck. The warm shower streamed down on them, and their wet bodies hugged together.

CD's head was reeling at the feeling of his mouth on her neck. Soon, though, she had to stop him. "Naaaaaaaate...." she moaned.

Nate grinned, and kept kissing her. 'Damn, I'm good,' he thought to himself proudly. "What?" he grinned.

"I just got my period, remember?"

Nate stopped kissing her. "Awww, man! I almost forgot!" he replied and rubbed his forehead.

"I know....it's a pain in the butt.....among other places...." CD smirked. "Well, just a couple of days, and I promise I'm all yours."

Nate smiled. "Well.....OK, since you're PROMISING and all."

CD laughed. "Oh, shut up, Mr. Horny. Like you ever get denied."

Nate laughed, too. "Hey, you denied me for a whole year!" he kidded, waiting to get slapped.

Sure enough, that comment brought a slight smack on his arm from CD. "You jerk!" she laughed. "We weren't even together then!"

"Hey, whose fault was that?" Nate teased.

Sorry that I'm leaving you guys at that.....I want to post the whole scene, but I don't have it finished yet! LOL. My life has just been insane lately....2 papers and 3 tests just this week, then another paper and a test next week, plus I have an enviromental project to do, and my scholarship apps are due, and then I have to bake for a charity bake sale.....all that plus regular classes and working. Summer can't come to quickly, I'm telling ya! ;)

Yeah, whoa, I feel like I'm running in circles these days, and probably will be until finals are over in May. Well, I just finished my lab test, and have a few more minutes until my math quiz, so I thought I'd sneak in here and post a little more for you. :)

CD made a face at him. "Oh, HAHA, very funny! You think you're soooooo smart, don't you?"

"Hey, I figured out EXACTLY what happened, babe. You wanted to go out with someone because Paul got married again, and you really wanted to go out with ME, but you knew that you probably shouldn't, so you looked for the next single guy that strolled by, and it just happened to be Brian!" CD gave him a playful glare, and crossed her arms. "What?!" Nate laughed.

CD stuck her tongue out at him, pretending to be mad. Then she turned off the shower, stepped out of the tub, and wrapped a towel around herself. CD looked back at Nate and smirked. "You're a dork, you know that?"

Nate put a big, cheesy grin on and replied, "Why, thank you! My accomplishment for the day has been reached, and I haven't even had breakfast yet!"

CD rolled her eyes. "What accomplishment?"

"Mmm, no. You wouldn't understand. It's a guy thing."

CD sighed. "Oh, please, Nate. If it's just that boys like to tease girls, that's not news."

Nate crossed his arms and stuck his lower lip out. "It's not?"

CD laughed. "No, it's not, sweetie. Boys have been teasing girls for as long as there have been boys and girls."

"But I'm not a little boy anymore," Nate grinned and winked at her.

CD grinned back at him. "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys," she joked.

"Hey, there's another difference or two!" Nate replied with a smirk, as he zipped up his pants. CD smiled and winked at him, gave him a kiss, and then went to get breakfast.

When CD and Nate got into work, Kate immediately called them into her office. "I've got a case for you two." They sat down across from Kate, and she handed them a file. "Two kids, a boy and girl, ages 6 and 7, were found last night alone in an apartment. A neighbor called because she hadn't seen the mother coming or going for several days, but she knew the kids were there by the noise."

"What about the father?" Nate asked.

"He lives in Sacramento, and only sees them every other weekend. He's been called, but he is stuck in Tokyo for a convention, and didn't leave a number for where he is. His secretary said he's supposed to be back in a few days, though. But in the meantime, the mother is missing," Kate said.

"Shouldn't 'Missing Persons' handle this?" CD questioned.

"Well, they would ordinarily, but she has a history of gang activity. There's no telling what happened to her. Maybe she owed someone money." Kate shrugged and held up her hands.

"OK, well, we're on it," CD said and stood up.

"Where are the kids now?" Nate asked.

"Child Protective Services. You'll want to talk to them."

"Don't worry, Cap. We will," CD said and nodded firmly. She and Nate picked up their coats and headed for the door. CD glanced at Nate, and couldn't resist taking his hand in hers as they went.

CD and Nate went directly to CPS to talk to the kids. They were shown nto a small, private room and waited. A social worker brought the children in to see Nate and CD. "Natalie, Ryan, these are the nice police officers I was telling you about. They just want to talk to you for a few minutes. I'll be right outside if you need me, OK?" the social worker said. They boy just stared at them, and the girl clutched a doll in her little arms and nodded. "Good luck, Inspectors. They don't talk much," the lady said with a sweet smile, and then shut the door behind her as she left.

CD and Nate just kind of looked at each other, waiting for the other to start. CD finally went ahead. "That's such a pretty doll, Natalie. What's her name?"

The six-year-old girl with dark brown hair and hazel eyes stared back at CD. CD almost wasn't expecting her to say anything, but then she said, "Emily."

CD smiled and said, "Oh, that's a pretty name! Well, you can call me CD, and this is Nate."

"CD? That's a funny name. Were you named after CD's?" Ryan asked, and wrinkled his nose.

Nate laughed. "Yeah, THOSE were around when she was born!"

CD frowned at Nate. "Oh, right, like YOU were born in the last 15 years!"

Nate chuckled again. He just loved to torture her like that.

"No, I wasn't named after CD's. My real name is Candace, but I like CD better," CD explained.

"Oh, well I think Candace is a pretty name," Natalie said, and CD smiled.

Nate decided to go ahead with the questioning. "So, Ryan, Natalie....do you know where your parents are?"

"Daddy doesn't live with us. Mommy made him leave," Ryan said.

"Doesn't your mommy like your daddy?" CD asked.

"No. She likes her boyfriends better," he replied. CD gave Nate a sad look. Ryan continued, "But Natalie and I like him! He's nice. I wish we could live with him all the time!"

"Well, we'll see about that," CD said with a smile. "But do you know where your mommy is?" CD asked. Natalie shook her head, and looked like she was going to cry. CD felt her heart melt, and reached out for her. The little girl hugged her, and CD hoisted her up onto her lap. CD smoothed her hair and rubbed her back. "Awww....it's going to be OK, sweetie. It's going to be OK."

Nate watched CD, and his heart felt so full as he saw her with the little girl. 'She would make such an amazing mother,' he thought and smiled to himself.

Ryan spoke up. "Natalie doesn't like it when Mommy goes away, but I take good care of her!" he beamed proudly.

"You do, do you?" Nate said with a smile. "Does you mommy go away a lot?"

Ryan nodded. "Yeah, but she always comes back. Mommy is going to come back really soon, you'll see."

CD and Nate looked sadly at each other. Natalie's head rested on CD's chest. Nate said, "Did you ever meet your mom's friends?"

"Only a couple of times. I don't think they like kids very much. And they were always trading these little bags with white stuff in them. They were mean, too."

Nate and CD exchanged very grim looks. Nate looked at CD and nodded. CD nodded back, and then Nate stepped outside of the room to call Kate.

"McCafferty," Kate's voice could be heard through the phone.

"Hey, Captain, it's Nate."

"Hey, Nate. Found anything?"

Nate sighed. "Yeah....poor kids. The mother is a junkie and leaves them for extended periods of time. The boy seems to be handling things pretty well, but the girl is just a shell. She just clings to CD and won't say anything," Nate replied sadly.

"Awww, poor kid. How's CD handling it?"

"Pretty good, actually. But we really haven't gotten any leads, so we should probably be moving along now."

"Well, OK, go see if you can find anything, but then, could you two do me a personal favor?" Kate asked.

"What?" Nate replied, feeling a little irritated. 'I am NOT picking up her dry cleaning,' he thought to himself.

"Could you spend some time with the kids later? You know, take them to McDonald's or something? My treat."

Nate's frown turned into a smile. "Sure, Cap. We'd be happy to."

Kate smiled, too. "I'd take them myself, but if this little girl is as attached to CD as you say she is....."

"Hey, like I said, no problem. It's our pleasure."

Awwww, I'm glad that you two liked it so much! :D Not much, because I just can't seem to catch a break with all the crap I have to do, but here's a little more.

CD and Nate finished talking to the kids, and then went to talk to the neighbors. The neigbors gave them a lead of one of the mother's gang members. They went back to the office to do some paperwork. It was now after 5, though, and Nate noticed his stomach was growling. "Hey, honey?" Nate said.

"Hmmm?" CD said was she concentrated on what she was doing.

She didn't even bother looking up, though, until Nate repeated in a whiny voice, "Honeeeeeeey?"

CD looked up at him, and smiled. "Nate, if you have to go to the bathroom, you don't need my permission. Just go," she joked with a slight smirk on her face.

Nate rolled his eyes and smiled. "I don't have to use the bathroom, CD. I was just thinking that it's after 5 already, and we promised to take Ryan and Natalie out for dinner."

"Oh, yeah! Geez---I didn't even realize it was so late. We'd better get going." CD replied and snapped her folder shut. Nate grinned and followed her out the door.

Nate and CD went and picked up the kids. When the kids saw them, they got excited. "You came back! Did you find my mommy?" Ryan asked.

"Sorry, buddy, not yet," Nate said and smiled.

Natalie ran up to CD and threw her arms around her waist. "CD!" she exclaimed.

"Well, hello!" CD replied with a grin and rubbed the little girl's back. "Hey, you 2, how would you like to go to, um.....Chuck E. Cheese's for dinner with us?" CD said and winked at Nate and grinned at him. Nate winked and smiled back at her.

The kids' eyes lit up. "Chuck E. Cheese's? Really?" they exclaimed.

"Really. Have you ever been there before?" Nate asked.

"Daddy took us there once, but Mommy doesn't like to take us to places like that. Can we go there NOW?!" he said, and his face just glowed.

"We sure can! Are you ready to go? Nate replied with a grin.

"Chuck E. Cheese," Natalie murmured and smiled.

CD and Nate smiled back at her. "You want to hold my hand?" CD said to her and extended her hand. Natalie nodded and took it.

CD and Nate smiled back at her. "You want to hold my hand?" CD said to her and extended her hand. Natalie nodded and took it. Nate and CD took the kids to their police car and buckled them into the back.

"We get to ride in a police car?!" Ryan exclaimed. "Cool!"

CD and Nate laughed and got into the front. "We have presents for your guys," CD said, and reached into a plastic bag. She handed Natalie a package of some pretty hair barrettes and scrunchies, while Nate put a San Francisco Giants baseball cap on Ryan's head.

"Whoa, cool, Nate! The Giants! Thanks!" Ryan said excitedly.

Natalie stared at the hair clips, and a smile spread across her lips. "You like those, huh?" CD said with a grin. Her eyes sparkled at Natalie. Natalie nodded, and her dark, soulful eyes seemed to stare right into CD's heart.

Nate, CD, and the kids sat at a table at Chuck E. Cheese's and munched on pepperoni pizza. Ryan chattered away, and CD and Nate were having a blast. He talked about his mom and dad, and then suddenly said, "You know, you two should get married and have kids!" CD and Nate looked at each other and laughed. Ryan chomped down on another bite of pizza and grinned. "What?" he asked.

"We ARE married, Ryan." CD said with a chuckle.

Ryan wrinkled his nose and furrowed his brow. "But I thought that you were cops. Do all cops marry each other?"

Nate and CD laughed again. "No, buddy. It hardly ever happens. CD and I just got lucky, I guess." Nate winked at CD, and squeezed her knee underneath the table. CD smiled back at him and rubbed her foot up and down his leg, underneath the table. After all, they had still only been together a little over a month now. They were still newlyweds.

"Well, why dont' you have any kids, then?" Ryan asked innocently.

Poor CD and Nate were reminded of what they had just gone through, and their faces fell. "It, uh, just hasn't happened for us yet, Ryan," Nate answered quietly.

Suddenly, Natalie spoke up. "Well, you should have kids. You'd make a great mommy, CD." Natalie smiled.

CD smiled back at her, happy to see her interested in something. "Thank you, Natalie. I'll think about it."

CD looked back at Nate, to see his face. He nodded and smiled at her, and squeezed her hand. Nate mouthed "I love you" at her, and she did the same in response.

After dinner, Nate and CD played all the games with the kids. They spent several hours there, until they noticed the kids getting droopy and sleepy. They packed the kids back into the car, and told them that it was time to go home.

"Awwww, do we have to?" Ryan whined.

"Yeah, sorry, guys. You have to get to bed," CD laughed.

"I don't want to go back to that place with the other kids. Can we go home with you?" he pleaded.

"Can we go home with you?" he pleaded.

CD and Nate looked at each other. "What do you think?' Nate whispered.

"We'd have to call and get permission," CD replied in a low voice.

Nate smiled. "You want me to call?"

"Nah. I'm a better liar than you," CD replied with a smile, and winked at him. Nate laughed and started driving towards home, while CD pulled out her cell phone an dialed CPS. Nate kept glancing back at CD to watch her in action. CD said into the phone, "Hi, this is Inspector Basso. My partner and I are the ones who picked up Natalie and Ryan Williams to take them to dinner, and.......my partner's name? Inspector Basso.......I know what you asked, ma'am, and his name is Inspector Basso......yes, that's my name, too......no, lady, I'm not playing a game with you! Come on!" CD sighed and rolled her eyes. "Fine. My partner and I are married. There you go. Happy now?" CD let out another exasperated sigh and looked at Nate with an "I can't believe this" expression on her face. Nate looked at her with a suspicious smile, his eyebrows lifted.

CD continued. "OK, now that we have the whole name thing out of they way, can we continue?.......thanks. Anyway, we think that we might get the children to open up more if they spent the night with us. You know, so if they say anything in their sleep, we can ask them about it. We'll just take them to school tomorrow, OK?" CD paused as she listened to the response. "Great, thanks. You have a good night." She snapped the phone shut and smiled at Nate.

Nate smiled at her and then said, "You get to spend the night at our house tonight, guys!"

"Yay!!!!" they exclaimed, and high-fived each other.

CD and Nate lauged and then grinned at each other. While his left hand stayed on the steering wheel, Nate slid his right hand over to CD's and grasped it. CD smiled at him, and he smiled back. They didn't need to say a word.

CD and Nate took the kids home, had them take baths, and then gave them T-shirts to sleep in. Nate then read the kids a story while CD went to put their clothes in the wash.

When she came back, CD stopped dead in her tracks as she watched Nate and the children. They didn't notice her, but she watched them from the doorway in silence. Natalie sat in Nate's lap, and Ryan was leaning against his side. Nate had his arm around him. Nate read from the book intently and expressively. He and the kids were all captivated, and the smiles on their faces were priceless. Nate looked so happy. CD felt her heart melt to the consistency of marshmallow fluff. She was so touched that a tear sprung to her eye. After a minute, Nate felt CD's presence and looked up. His angel was smiling at him, and he felt as though their hearts were connected. They both knew that the children weren't theirs, but for one night, they felt like a family.

Alright, then, even though Lisa hasn't exactly been the nicest to me tonight, (j/j, Lisa ;) ;) ), I forgive her and I wrote some more so I'm posting.

They both knew that the children weren't theirs, but for one night, they felt like a family. Nate grinned at her. "Hey, honey, we're reading my old "Star Wars" books from when I was a kid."

CD laughed. "You are, are you?" she said and grinned back. "Sounds like fun."

Ryan exlaimed, "It is! You want Nate to read to you, too?"

CD looked at Nate, and paused. "Sure, why not." CD went over to Nate and the kids and sat down next to Nate's free side. She took Natalie's hand in hers, and rested her head on Nate's shoulder. Nate grinned and continued reading.

A half hour later, Nate closed the book. "OK, kiddos, CD and I are tired, so it's off to bed for all of us!"

"Awww, do we have to?" Ryan whined.

CD chuckled. "Yes, we HAVE to. You have school tomorrow, and Nate and I have to work. But you guys can camp out in the guest room."

"Yay!" Ryan squealed and grabbed Natalie's hand. "Come on, Nat'ly, we get to sleep in the guest room!"

CD and Nate looked at each other and smiled. They led the kids to the spare bedroom, and tucked them into the big bed. CD then pulled another fluffy quilt over them, and gave them each a big kiss on the forehead. Nate gave them each a kiss as well. "You two have sweet dreams," CD said and smiled as she and Nate paused at the door.

"We'll just be across the hall if you need anything," Nate added.

"Goodnight!" Ryan chirped, and patted his pillow.

"Can you leave the light on?" Natalie softly asked.

CD smiled. "Sure. How about I just leave the closet light on so you can sleep?"

Natalie smiled as well. "Thank you."

"You're welcome, sweetie. Goodnight."

"Goodnight, CD," Natalie said. "Goodnight, Nate."

Nate looked at CD with a surprised face, and they smiled. CD turned off the main light and she and Nate left for their own room.

The next morning, CD and Nate got the kids dressed and fed, besides doing the same for themselves. They dropped them off at school on their way to work. They then got into work and checked their messages for any progress. There was none.

A few minutes later, Nate's phone rang. "Basso," he said into the phone. CD looked up at him when she heard him answer the phone. She watched his face fall as he listened. "Um, OK. Thanks for letting me know," Nate said into the phone and hung up. He looked at CD. "Bad news."

Bad news?? Come on post more soon! I need to know:D

A few minutes later, Nate's phone rang. "Basso," he said into the phone. CD looked up at him when she heard him answer the phone. She watched his face fall as he listened. "Um, OK. Thanks for letting me know," Nate said into the phone and hung up. He looked at CD. "Bad news."

"Oh, no, what?" CD replied. She was worried.

"A call just came. Ryan and Natalie's mom is gone."

"Gone?"

"As in dead. She was found dead in some alley a couple of hours ago. Overdosed on coke."

CD's face turned very sad, and she and Nate exchanged that look they always did when someone died. "Now what?" CD said, more stating than asking.

Nate nodded, knowingly. "Poor kids," he said.

"Hopefully their dad checks out OK. Then they could at least live with him," CD said.

"Yeah.....well, I guess this wraps our missing mom case," Nate replied.

"No. We should try to track down the father. There has GOT to be a way to find him."

At that, a little smiled crept at the corners of Nate's lips. He loved how persistent and caring she was. He loved that she never quit, no matter what. "I'm sure we'll find him, honey," Nate replied, assuringly.

"We better hope so. The sooner, the better," CD said and picked up her phone.

CD and Nate each made a bunch of phone calls, and they were able to find the hotel that Ryan and Natalie's dad was staying at in Tokyo. "I got the number!" CD gleefully announced to Nate.

Nate's face turned into a smirk. "You want to speak Japanese or should I?"

"You dork. You canNOT speak Japanese."

"Neither can you," Nate replied with an indentical smirk. "So now what do we do, Nora?" he grinned.

"Now, Nick, I'm sure that there is SOMEONE there who speaks English," CD said with a smile and started to dial.

"English? English?" CD spoke loudly and clearly into the phone for the third try. She rolled here eyes at Nate.

"Here, let me try," Nate said and reached for her phone.

CD gave him a "yeah, you go ahead an try to do what can't be done" look, and handed him the phone.

Nate gave a toothy, cheesy grin at her. "English? Police. English," he said. Then he heard silence. About 5 seconds later, someone who spoke English got on the phone.

"All, I speaky Eeeenglish," the woman on the other end of the line said.

Nate grinned at CD and stuck his tongue out at her. CD frowned at him and crossed her arms. "Eh, I warmed her up for you," CD said and rolled her eyes.

After several minutes of trying to communicate, Nate finally got through to the guy's room. Since it was now almost midnight in Tokyo, he was in his hotel room, asleep. He picked up and Nate explained everything.

Nate hung up a couple of minutes later.

"Well?" CD said.

"He's coming on the first flight out of there. Hopefully he'll be there tomorrow."

"Thank God," CD said. Relief washed over her.

After work, Nate and CD picked up the kids again and took them home. CD made homemade baked chicken fingers, french fries, and applesauce. They ate the dinner and then all made chocolate chip cookies together. Nate and CD helped the kids scoop the dough and put it on cookie sheets. Then Ryan got the beater to lick, and Natalie got the bowl. Then they waited for the cookies to bake so they could eat them. Half and hour and a dozen eaten cookies later, it was time to get ready for bed. The kids again took baths, but this time changed into pajamas that CD and Nate bought for them earlier in the day. Then they all cuddled together on the bed in the guest bedroom while Nate read more out of his book. The kids fell asleep after a while, so Nate and CD carefully and gently removed themselves from the sleeping children and tucked them into the bed. They each gave them a goodnight kiss, and CD turned on the closet light while Nate turned off the ceiling light.

Nate and CD retreated back to the living room and collapsed onto the sofa. They propped their feet up on the coffee table and loudly exhaled. "Whew, who would've thought that a couple of little kids could wear us out so fast!" CD exclaimed with a smile on her face.

"Mm HMM," Nate replied and put his arm around his wife's shoulder. CD scooted up against him and laid her head on his shoulder. "They're so much fun, though," Nate murmured into her hair.

"They sure are. They're great," CD replied.

They sat in silence for a minute. Nate then said, "CD?"

"Yeah?"

"Suppose if the kids' dad doesn't check out. Suppose he's all screwed up, too....why don't we ask for the kids?"

A little smile crept at the corners of CD's mouth. "Now I know why I married you," CD said and her eyes sparkled at his.

Nate gave a little laugh and grinned at her. "What?'

"Now I know why I married you," she repeated. "Because of exactly stuff like that. You are so loving and caring and selfless, that you want to open up your home and your heart to these children you've only known for 2 days. I love you so much for it."

Nate's cheeks turned red and he slightly smiled. "Eh, it's nothing any real man wouldn't do."

"No, it isn't. It's something that very few men would do. And, by the way, I was thinking the same thing about the kids," CD said with a smile.

"Really? You were?"

"Mm hmm."

"I always knew that about you. See now, THAT'S why I married YOU," Nate replied and winked at her.

CD laughed. "Oh, really? I thought it was because you were jealous and drunk and I asked you!"

Nate laughed, too. "Oh, but see, I got jealous and drunk and said 'yes' BECAUSE of that."

CD sighed contentedly and grinned at him. "I love you so much, Nate."

"I love you, too, baby."

They cuddled, enveloped in each other's arms for another minute. Then CD said, "But what if they do go to live with their dad?"

"Then we'll just thank God that it worked out for the best, and we'll start trying for a baby of our own."

CD smiled at him and nodded. "We sure will, sweetie."

The next day at work, Nate and CD did their research on the kids' dad, Wes. They found out that he was a model citizen, and that he had only been denied primary custody of the kids in the divorce because he couldn't prove that their mother had problems.

That afternoon, Nate and CD were getting started on a new case when a clean-cut man in a business suit came rushing into the division. "Inspector Basso?" he asked desperately.

Both Nate and CD looked up at him and stood up. "Yes?" they said at the same time.

The man's eyes shifted back and forth between them, and he looked a little confused. Nate smiled and said, "Are you Wes Williams?"

"Yeah, are you the Inspector I talked to on the phone?" he replied and shook Nate's hand.

"Yeah, that's me. I'm Nate Basso, and this is my partner, Inspector CD Basso," Nate answered and gestured to CD. She smiled and shook Wes's hand as well.

Wes looked confused again. "Um.....OK, you'll have to help me out here. Are you two related or something?"

CD and Nate glanced at each other with grins and CD replied, "Yeah, I guess you could say that."

Nate said, "We're sorry about you ex-wife. Do you feel that you can take custody of Ryan and Natalie?"

"Oh, of course! I've been trying to get them away from her for years, but the courts wouldn't hear of it. I'm sorry that she's gone, of course---I mean, she is their mother---but at least now I can make sure that they're being taken care of. It always tore me up inside everytime I had to leave them."

CD smiled and slightly nodded. "Well, at least you don't have to worry about that anymore. You checked out great."

"There's one happy ending," Nate added with a smile.

"Here, we'll take you to get the kids," CD said.

CD and Nate took Wes to the kids' school. After all the hugs and kisses between the kids and their dad, CD and Nate sadly began their goodbyes. CD gave Natalie a big hug. "Goodbye, sweetie. I think you're a really great kid."

Natalie grinned and wrapped her arms around CD's neck. "I love you, CD," she said and kissed her on the cheek.

CD blinked back a tear. "I love you, too, Natalie. You can call me anytime." Then CD hugged Ryan as well. "I love you, too, Ryan. Remember that you can always call us."

"Thanks, CD. Thanks, Nate. You guys are so cool!" Ryan replied with a huge smile.

"We think you guys are pretty special, too," Nate replied with a smile and hugged them both.

Finally, Wes and the kids left while CD and Nate watched. They stood with their arms around each other and waved until they couldn't see anymore. CD sighed and put her head on Nate's shoulder. "That's so sweet.....so why am I so sad?"

Nate smiled and kissed her head. "Because you have a heart of gold, CD."

"So do you."

"And that's one of the many reasons why we're perfect for each other," Nate said.

They stood there for a minute, until CD said, "Nate?"

"Yeah?"

She looked up at him with a saucy smile. "Let's go home and prove just how perfect we are for each other," CD purred.

A shiver ran down Nate's spine. 'Just the sound of that woman's voice drives me crazy,' he thought. He grinned and kissed her passionately. When they broke the kiss, he said, "Know any good shortcuts?"

I wasn't planning on posting on this again this soon, but I just wrote this yesterday and it cracked me up, so I just had to post it. :D

Nate and CD got into their car, and Nate started to drive home. A little smirk crept at the corners of CD's mouth as a devilish idea popped into her head. She slowly moved her hand to Nate's thigh and began to stoke it. Nate grinned and glanced at her. "What, you can't wait til we get home?" he chuckled and winked at her.

"No more than you can," CD purred and nibbled at his ear.

Nate was now trying harder than ever to keep his eyes glued to the road. CD grinned at his response and moved her lips to his neck. She also moved her hand to between his legs. "Oh, CD......" he muttered and swallowed hard. CD ignored that comment and continued what she was doing. "CeeeeeeeeeeDeeeeeeeeee.......I've got to focus here, if we ever want to get home alive," he moaned.

Despite his best efforts, though, he was losing command of the car and the car began to weave as his foot unknowingly pressed further down on the gas. Next thing they knew, CD and Nate were jerked out of their fog by sirens behind them. Nate's eyes flashed to the rearview mirror, where sure enough, he saw a squad car with lights and sirens blaring. "Awww, geez..." Nate whined and pulled over the car to the side of the road.

CD quickly moved back to her seat and put her hands in her lap. "Now look at what you did," CD said, trying to suppress a laugh.

"Look at what I did?! YOU were the one distracting me! I was the one trying to focus on the road!" Nate yelled back.

"You know, Nate, if you could ever learn how to get your hormones under control like I do, these things wouldn't happen." CD was trying so hard to keep from laughing.

Nate stared back at her in shock. "You are unbelievable."

"I know, baby, I know," CD replied with a grin.

The young officer that pulled them over walked to their car, and Nate lowered the window. "Good afternoon, officer," Nate said and smiled.

"License and registration, please," he replied with a cold stare.

Nate fumbled for his driver's license and the car's registration, and then handed them to him. CD snatched Nate's badge from his belt, and shoved it, along with her own badge, in the window frame. When she lowered the badges again, she and Nate could see the officer's startled face. "Um, uh....um, I'm so sorry, Inspectors. I didn't know who you were. I just thought you were a drunk driver, with the weaving and speeding and stuff....."

"Oh, I was just testing the car. It's a new unmarked squad car, and I wanted to see what this baby could do," Nate quipped.

CD smiled and nodded in agreement. Then she said, "Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to get to a crime scene."

"Um, sure, of course, Inspector. Again, I'm so sorry for all the trouble. Please don't say anything to my Captain." The officer was obviously afraid of the embarassment if the news got around that he had stopped 2 Inspectors for no real reason.

Nate gave a little smile that he'd gotten away with it. "Don't worry, buddy. Everything's cool."

"Thanks!" he replied and made his way back to his squad car.

Nate and CD looked at each other, and then simultaneously burst out laughing. "Are we good or what?!" Nate said through his laughs.

"We should write for TV. We would be sooooo much better at it than that one woman who does those cop shows. What's her name again? Deborah something?" CD said.

"Oh, yeah, HER. Deborah June Lavigne. Yeah, she used to be really good, but now.....well, Tommy Pitty-Pat could do better!"

CD laughed. "And he has!"

For the rest of the ride home, CD managed to keep her hands to herself. However, once they got in the door, Nate immediately grabbed her by the waist and planted a big, long kiss on her lips. CD giggled and returned the kiss with all her heart and soul. Nate's kisses then moved to her jawline as he started to fumble with her shirt buttons. CD gave him some help with that as she also started to lead him down the hallway to their bedroom. By the time they reached it, CD's shirt had fallen to the floor, in a heap next to Nate's. CD sat down on the edge of the bed, grabbed Nate's belt by the buckle, and pulled him down with her.

A short while later, Nate collapsed on top of CD. They were both almost completely out of breath, and their heads were spinning. "Oh my gosh, Nate.....that was too amazing for words. I love you so much," CD gasped out while trying to catch her breath.

"Oh, CD, I love you too, more than you can imagine." Nate rolled off of her, and cradled her in his arms as they laid next to each other. The soft, smooth sheets were tangled in their legs. CD knew that she would have to tell Nate eventually, that her tubes were tied [Note: Remember, this is before "Cradle Will Rock," when CD told him]. She figured that this was as good a time as any.

"Nate....." CD began and coyly used her fingers to trace his chest.

"Hmmm....." Nate peacefully and contentedly replied. He still had a smile on his face, and he kissed the top of her head.

"Nate, you love me, right?" CD asked.

"Of course, honey. More than anything in the world."

"And you want kids, right?"

"Well sure....I mean, as long as you want to, too."

"Oh, I do want them, it's just....there's one little problem," CD said in a slight whisper.

Nate felt very concerned all of a sudden. "A problem? Are you OK, CD?" Nate asked.

"I'm fine, it's just....oh, hell, I'll just go ahead and say it. Look, 10 years ago, when I was first marrying Paul, I had my tubes tied." CD forced herself to look at Nate's reaction.

Nate was shocked, and didn't know quite how to answer. He felt his heart fall. He struggled for words. All he could utter out was, "Why?"

CD sighed. "Well, although I thought the marriage would last, I knew that Paul wasn't exactly 'father material.' So I wanted to make sure that I couldn't get pregnant. And when I thought I was pregnant last week, I found out that it is possible to get pregnant when your tubes are tied, but it's very rare...."

"So that's why you were so freaked out," Nate mused.

CD nodded but thought to herself, 'That's not the only reason.'

Nate held her tight and kissed her forehead. "It's OK, baby....I love you anyway, even if we can never have a baby," Nate reassured her.

"No, it's NOT OK, Nate! This ruins everything! You want a baby, and I want to have your baby! God! Why did I have to be so damn stupid?" CD spewed.

You weren't stupid, honey. You were just young, and didn't know what the future would hold. But it's not hopeless, you know."

"Of course it's hopeless! How on earth can you get me pregnant if the damn 'road' is blocked?"

"Well, you could get your tubes untied. I mean, I know it's surgery, and doesn't always work, but if you want to....we could check into it."

"Yeah....I think I'd like that," CD replied in a soft voice. They laid in silence for a minute, until she heard Nate's stomach rumble. "Oh my gosh, Nate, I completely forgot about dinner!" CD exclaimed and sat up.

Nate chuckled. "Sorry about the little 'alarm clock,'" Nate replied. CD laughed, and began to put some clothes on. Nate grinned. "What do you want to do for dinner?" he asked, and reached for his own clothes.

"Oh, there's this new recipe for a Tex-Mex dish that I want to try."

"Yum! Need any help?"

"Hmm, you can start off with setting the table. Think you can handle that?"

"You got it, babe."

A week later found CD and Nate sitting in the waiting room of her ob/gyn's office. Nate kept fidgeting and shifting in his seat, which started to bug CD. After several minutes of this, CD said, "Nate, what is WITH you? You're driving me nuts!"

"Think about it, CD---I'm in a gynecologist's waiting room. Me, a GUY, in a gynecologist's waiting room. These places don't exactly scream, 'Hey, all you macho stud guys, come on in!'"

CD laughed, and looked around the room. There were several heavily pregnant women waiting as well, a few women who looked like they were there for non-baby reasons, and then a group. It was two women, accompanied by a rather slight man who talked with a lisp and waved his hands around a lot. CD pointed to him an said, "There you go, Nate----there's another man!"

Nate rolled his eyes. "Oh, please, CD, he doesn't count. And he's probably a sperm donor for that lesbian couple he's with."

CD laughed again. "Yeah, you're probably right. But, come on, Nate, if we're going to have a baby, you're going to have to get used to being in this kind of office. You are not just going to be around for the fun part and hide from the rest of it."

Nate smiled and took CD's hand in his. "Don't ever worry about that, sweetheart. I'll be here for every single appointment. I promise."

"Thanks," CD replied, smiled, and gave him a kiss.

"Hey, I'm your husband, that's what I'm supposed to do."

Just then, they heard some sniffling, and looked for the source of it. They spotted a pregnant woman crying and dabbing at her eyes with a kleenex. "Are you OK?" CD asked her.

The woman nodded and made a smile through her tears. "Oh, yes, hun, I'm just fine. I just think that you and your husband are the sweetest, cutest thing I've ever seen!"

CD and Nate looked at each other and grinned. "Well thank you!" CD replied.

"No, really, I mean it. I can just tell that you two are perfect for each other. Not very many people are as lucky as you, to have found your soul mate."

"I sure am lucky," Nate said. "The luckiest man in the world."

CD smiled at him. "I think a little more than luck had to do with it."

The nurse opened the waiting room door then. "Candace Basso?" she announced.

"We're up!" CD said, and she and Nate followed her into an examining room.

"Now, what did you say you were here for today, Mrs. Basso? Something about a tubal ligation?"

"Yeah. I just wanted to talk to the doctor about having it reversed," CD replied.

The nurse looked at CD and Nate, and then back to CD and smiled. "Oh, I see. Decided you want a baby after all, hmm?"

"Yeah," CD said with a shy smile.

"Well, Dr. Reinhart does these all the time, with a very high success rate."

CD and Nate smiled at each other. "Well, let's just hope it works for us," CD said.

~ A Month Later~

"Nate? What's this?" CD asked with a questioning smile on her face. The statuesque blonde woman had just walked in the door of the apartment she shared with her husband. The apartment was spotless, scented candles were lit everywhere, some romantic jazz was playing on the CD player, and the table was set for a romantic dinner.

Nate stepped out of the kitchen, wiped his hands on a dishcloth, and walked into the living room to greet his wife. He was dressed in black dress slacks and a red dress shirt. Nate walked right up to CD. "Hey, beautiful," he said, took her in his arms, and gave her a long, sensuous kiss.

The rush of feelings within CD at his touch made her temporarily forget that the apartment looked unusual. When they pulled apart, CD laughed with joy and said, "Wow! It's great to see you, too, hun!"

Nate grinned and helped CD off with her coat. She then took off her holster and hung it up on the coat tree. Nate led her back to the kitchen. He had set the table with china, goblets, and the good silverware. A silver vase was placed in the center of the cloth-covered table and was filled with long-stemmed red roses. More candles softly lit the table, providing the only light in the area, except for the kitchen's lights. CD's jaw dropped. "Oh my gosh, Nate! What is all of this?"

Nate grinned. "Just a little thank you on my part, for what you're going to do tomorrow."

CD flashed a flattered smile. "And just what would that be?" she murmured as she hugged him from behind.

Nate spun around to hold her and face her. "You know what I mean, silly girl," he replied and kissed her.

"Hmmm, well, we always have had this psychic connection," CD said and winked at him.

"Well, how about we enjoy some of this dinner I've been slaving over since the second you left," Nate chuckled and gestured towards the table.

CD laughed. "So THAT'S why Jinny suddenly just HAD to meet me for coffee and blab on and on ad nauseum about Teddy's laundry and his annoying eating habits and how he's lined up her underwear for each day of the week and organized her spice rack by the dewey decimal system and ---"

"CD!" Nate laughed.

"Sorry," she said with a grin. "Got a little, um, distracted there for a moment. Dinner smells great!"

"Thanks. But don't expect a miracle, though."

CD chuckled. "That's OK, sweetie. I'm sure whatever you made will be delicious. What are we having, by the way?"

"Well, I'd thought we'd start off with some salad and French bread with garlic flavored olive oil and parmesan, then totellini, followed by a surprise for dessert."

"Oooooh---something chocolate, I hope?" CD's eyes lit up as she talked.

Nate grinned. "And would I get anything else?"

CD laughed. "No, I guess not. You're my chocolate boy, Nathan Francis Albert Basso."

"Hey! You just love to toss around my full name, don't you?!"

"Yup! It's fun."

"Glad to hear my name gives you so much entertainment."

"Well, it does, but not as much as the man it belongs to." With that, CD gave him another brief smooch. "Now then.....let's have that amazing dinner."

Wow, thanks so much! And thank you, Lisa, for the new page! Again, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this, but I've had a personal crisis and not only have I not felt like posting, but I didn't feel like writing, either. And since that was all I had written, that was a problem. ;) :) And, if I HAD written, I probably would have killed one of them off, and I know that no one wants that. ;) I got this done today, since I'm feeling a little better. :)

With that, CD gave him another brief smooch. "Now then.....let's have that amazing dinner."

Nate made love to CD for hours, and then they both fell asleep. Everytime CD woke up being nervous, she just felt Nate's strong, protective arm around her and felt peace. She felt that she could make it through anything with the strength she had from Nate's love.

The next morning, Nate took CD to the hospital for the procedure. They got her checked in and admitted. Before CD went to get prepped for surgery, Nate took her hand and squeezed it. "Are you positive that you want to do this? Because if you aren't, we can leave right now," he said.

CD smiled at him. "I'm positive. No big deal."

Nate smiled back at her. "I'll be waiting here the whole time, and I'll be there next to you when you wake up. OK, baby?"

CD chuckled. "Interesting that you say 'baby.'" She gave him a kiss and turned to leave with the nurse.

"CD?" Nate said, and CD turned to look at him. "I love you."

"I love you, too."

Several hours later, CD was in a recovery room, sleeping off the anesthesia. Nate was sitting in a chair beside CD's bed, reading "Parenting" magazine. He occasionally glanced up to look at CD. Finally CD started to wake up. Nate quickly tried to hide the magazine, but CD caught a glimpse of it anyway. Nate smiled broadly. "Hey, honey! How are you feeling?"

CD grimaced, but managed a weak smile. "Sore," she said. "Sore but happy."

"I'm sorry. Does it hurt a lot?"

"No....not a lot. How long have you been sitting here?"

"Since you got out of surgery, about a half hour ago. Got some reading done, though."

CD smiled. "Mmm hmm. Interesting stuff, huh?"

"Oh, yeah....golf, baseball, basketball, football...you name it," Nate casually replied.

CD laughed. "Oh, shut up, Nate. I saw what you were reading."

Nate's cheeks turned pink. "I only read it for the articles, Mom, I swear!" he answered, trying to hold back a laugh.

CD did laugh, though. "Sheesh, Nate, stop making me laugh! I just had surgery, for crying out loud!"

"Sorry. But, I, I....the magazine was the only thing left in the waiting room, and so I---"

"Nate," CD cut him off. "Don't ruin the moment. It's really sweet, that you're already trying to be a good daddy."

Nate gave a little flattered smile. "Are you hungry, sweetheart?"

"A little. But I really don't want anything heavy. I don't think I could keep it down."

"Ok....well, how about some ice cream?"

CD's eyes lit up. "Hmm....I could do with some of that," she replied with a grin.

"You got it," Nate said and gave her a kiss. "You want mint chocolate chip?"* CD nodded eagerly. "I'll be back in a bit. You get some rest."

"I will," she replied.

Nate sat in the drive-thru of the Dairy Princess. First he squinted at the board, trying to make out what the options and prices were. After he figured that out, he pulled up to the giant ice cream cone. "qrtlb," was the noise that came out of the speaker.

Nate frowned. "What?" he shouted into it.

"ktweuw," came out of the speaker.

Nate paused. "Whatever. OK, I'll take a medium mint chocolate snowstorm."

"thilabaeyp want fries nbajh that?"

Nate furrowed his brow. "Um, no. Just the snowstorm."

"pthwakjc."

"How much did you say?" Nate sighed. "Oh, forget it, I'll find out at the window." He drove forward to the pay window.

"That'll be $19.64," said a pimply-faced, nerdy boy who looked like he didn't even shop in the men's department yet.

"WHAT?!!!" Nate exclaimed. "All I want is ONE snowstorm! How on earth could that be $20?!"

The kid shrugged. "Tax?"

"Oh, shut up. The tax rate is NOT 1000%."

"Oh, yeah. Well, what did you order?"

Nate was getting impatient. "Like I just TOLD you, ONE medium mint chocolate snowstorm! Now is that so hard?"

"Look, dude, I just take the money. Don't yell at me."

Nate looked up at the ceiling of his car, and took a deep breath. "Fine. Can you just tell me how much it is?"

"OK, that'll be $3.45."

"Much better," Nate said and handed four singles to him.

"See now, isn't it much more pleasant for everyone when you're nice?" Nate just rolled his eyes. The kid put the money in the cash register. "OK, now go through to window number two, and have a nice day."

"Um, I have some change coming."

The kid's bottom lip quivered. "What, I don't get a tip?"

"No!" Nate shouted.

"Well, fine, then, Mr.-my-way-or-the-highway!" he said and reluctantly handed him the other 55 cents.

Nate just rolled his eyes again and pulled forward to the next window. A kid who looked like the cashier's twin was there. "Yo, dude, what did YOU want?" he grumbled.

"Tell me," Nate said. "Does everyone under the age of 25 in this state say 'dude' all the time?"

"Well, duh, dude. It IS Calfornia, you know."

"Fine. Just give me my snowstorm."

"Your what?"

"The mint chocolate snowstorm that I ordered and paid for! Come on, my wife is in the hospital, I don't have all day!"

"Dude, your wife is in the hosptial and you're having ice cream?"

"Arrrggghhh! The ice cream IS for her! Now stop bugging me and just GET IT!!!"

"Well, excuse ME for living," he muttered and turned to get the bag. He handed it to Nate. "Thank you, come again."

"Yeah, you bet," Nate sarcastically replied, and looked into the bag.

"Um, could you move along? We DO have a business to run, here, if you don't mind."

"You know what? You've made me wait for 15 minutes, I think you can give me 5 seconds to see if you got my order right."

"Whatever, dude. I just work here."

"Don't remind me......Hey! This isn't what I ordered! What is this?"

"Meal #5, just like you said."

"I DID NOT SAY THAT!!!! I ordered a medium mint chocolate snowstorm, and I want it NOW!"

"Sheesh, aren't we demanding?!" the kid replied, and grabbed the bag back.

A minute later, he handed Nate the correct order, finally, and Nate drove back to hospital. When he walked into CD's room, she said with a smile, "Did you get my ice cream?"

"Yeah, but you better get used to store bought ice cream from now on, because I'm never doing this again!"

Nate spent most of the rest of the day watching CD sleep. Then he went home and slept, all alone. It felt very strange to not have CD next to him, for the first time in months. He realized just how much he needed her mere presence. The next day, Nate stopped by the hospital on the way to work to see CD. They had bagels together for breakfast, and then Nate went on to work. He again visited her at lunchtime, and then came back later that afternoon to take her home.

Nate made dinner for them and did the dishes. He insisted that CD stay on the couch, only allowing her to get up to use the bathroom. Everytime he caught her getting up to get something for herself, he told her to lay down again and got it himself.

CD was watching "Friends" on TV, while Nate was in the other room cleaning up. "You know what doesn't make sense to me?" she said out loud. No response from Nate. "Are you listening to me? Nate?"

"Did you say something?" he replied.

"Nate! I was asking you if you knew what doesn't make sense to me!"

"About what?" he called.

"'Friends!'"

"Which friends? Jinny and Teddy?"

"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you, Nate?"

"Doing what on purpose?"

"You're acting like you don't know what I'm talking about, just trying to drive me crazy!"

Nate slowly walked into the room, grinning. "Is it working?"

"Yes," she said and pretended to pout.

Nate gave her a kiss on the forehead and smiled. "I'm sorry, honey. What did you want to tell me?"

"Well, it's just that there's a lot of things that don't make sense in this show, to me."

"Like what?"

"First of all, there is no way that Rachel and Ross could have kept being friends like that for ten years. They either would have gotten married, or stopped being friends completely. A few years like that, yeah, I could see, but ten? Come on!"

Nate laughed. "Yeah, I know what you mean. I mean, it didn't take US nearly that long!"

CD laughed. "True. And, anyway, my second point is, why are they all always running into each other at the exact same time at Central Perk? Don't they have jobs? And why is that couch never occupied by anyone else? They act like they own it! And the other people in the cafe act like they aren't being loud and obnoxious like they are! And why does anyone actually let Phoebe sing after they've heard her ONCE? And when is Joey going to run out of women? Maybe that's why he's moving to L.A. He slept his way through New York, and needs a whole new batch of women. And why don't female TV characters ever change their names when they get married anymore? And---"

"CD!" Nate laughed. "Slow down, honey! You've been thinking about this a lot, huh?"

A little smirk crossed CD's lips. "Sorry. I got a little too excited."

Nate laughed again. "I can tell."

Yup, fully recovered! I've come to the conclusion that Illinois and Indiana are very boring states to drive through. ;) And I learned a lesson: Don't eat cake and then try to stay awake to drive 2 hours home again. ;) :D

The next night, CD and Nate were cuddling on the sofa, watching TV, when the doorbell rang. Nate stood up. "Stay here, hun, I'll get it," he said and smiled at her.

"OK," she replied and smiled back. CD then directed her attention back to her program.

Nate opened the door, to reveal a short, sixty-ish blonde woman with too much jewelry and makeup. She looked at Nate in surprise, since she hadn't expected to see a man at the door. "Um, I'm sorry, I must have the wrong apartment. I'm looking for my daughter," she said.

"Who's your daughter?" Nate asked.

"Candace. Candace DeLorenzo. I thought she lived here, or at least she used to...."

Nate of course now knew who she was, and his shoulders slumped at the realization. He knew that this was the last thing CD needed as she recovered from the surgery. "No, she lives here. Come on in," he replied.

"OK," she said slowly, and cautiously entered. "And just who are you?"

"I'm Nate Basso. You must be Polly Dankow. It's nice to meet you," he said and shook her hand.

She smiled. "Um, nice to meet you, too, whoever you are. Where's my daughter?"

"Right in here," he answered and gestured towards the living room.

Polly followed him into the living room, and CD looked up. She saw her mother, and a rush of old emotions came over her. She was in shock, and couldn't think of anything to say.

Nate felt really uncomfortable, as well. "Um, honey, looks like we have a visitor."

“Mom.....” she said slowly. “What are you doing here?”

“Candace! Is that any way to greet your mother after all these years? How about a ‘nice to see you?’”

“Sorry, Mom. It’s just kind of a surprise, is all. I wasn’t expecting you.”

“Well, that’s obvious. Since when do you have strange men staying over?” she replied, looking at Nate accusingly.

Nate gritted his teeth and crossed his arms. CD took a breath and said, “First of all, Mom, I’m 34 years old and I can have anyone stay over that I want. Second of all, Nate is not just some ‘strange man.’ He’s my husband.”

Polly looked back over at Nate in shock. “And just when exactly did THIS happen? And why didn’t you feel the need to tell your own mother that you got married again. And heaven forbid that you INVITE me to your wedding!”

Nate spoke up. “Um, Mrs. Dankow, maybe you’d be more comfortable if you sat down. Would you like anything to drink?”

“Well, thank goodness at least ONE of you has some manners. And yes, I would like a drink. I NEED one after this news!”

“Um, well, I didn’t mean a DRINK drink, um....but OK......” Nate mumbled, and left to get a drink from the kitchen.

“You didn’t tell me that you picked up some man!” Polly hissed at her daughter.

“Mother! He’s NOT just ‘some man!’ His name is Nate, and he’s my police partner. I’ve known him for well over a year, and I love him very much. He loves me, too, more than anyone ever has.”

“Candace! I cannot BELIEVE you think that this man could love you more than I do! I am your mother!”

“Well, you know what, Mom? Just because you’re my mother, it doesn’t mean that you love me like one. People who love each other keep in contact. So don’t give me that ‘love’ crap that you try to push at me.”

“And just what do YOU know about love? You couldn’t even keep your ex-husband home at night!” Polly rebutted.

Just then, Nate walked into the room with a glass of iced tea and handed it to Polly. He slammed it into her hand. “Here. I don’t think that it would be smart to give you anything stronger than this tonight,” he said coldly. Polly just glowered at him. Nate looked at CD, who was obviously hurt by what her mother had just said to her. “And Mrs. Dankow, with all due respect, I would appreciate you not speaking to my wife like that. She is MY WIFE, and she deserves much better than that.”

Polly’s face turned bright red with rage. Then she looked to CD. “Candace?! Are you just going to let him talk to me like that?!”

“Yes,” CD replied.

“I have never been so offended in my whole life! I came here for a friendly visit, and I get nothing but hate! Some daughter YOU turned out to be!” Polly fumed.

CD shuddered at her mother’s words. She pulled her legs up on the couch, and she curled into a fetal position. Nate felt his heart break watching CD get hurt like this. “Alright, darling mother-in-law, I’m sorry to have to do this, but I’m going to have to ask you to leave. CD is recovering from surgery, and she is not up to visitors. Especially those that are upsetting her,” Nate firmly said, and opened the door.

Polly continued to fume. She slammed her glass down on the coffee table, snatched up her purse that matched her shoes, and headed to the door. She turned around to face them and said, “You have not heard the last of THIS!” Then she turned again, and disappeared down the hallway.

Nate and CD watched in absolute shock as Polly left. Then Nate turned around to face CD, and walked back over to her. “Oh, honey......I am so sorry,” he said hopelessly. “When you said that you and your mom didn’t have a good relationship, I never imagined.......”

CD looked defeated, but not surprised. “It’s OK, honey. That was nothing out of the ordinary. Every few years she shows up and acts like nothing is wrong, only to cause more trouble.”

Nate sat down next to CD and put his arm around her. He kissed her forehead. “Well, I hope she didn’t upset you too much. When I heard her say that horribly unfair thing to you, I knew that I had to get her away from you.”

“Yeah, I noticed. Thanks. It’s nice to not have to fight these battles alone anymore.”

“Anytime, babe. You say the word, and whoever is bothering you is gone. Just thank goodness that we got rid of your mother so quickly.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t count on getting rid of her so soon, this time. Mom has a habit of only coming when she needs something from me, and since she didn’t get to make her pitch yet, she might be back.”

"Oh. Damn. Did you want me to talk to her for you?"

"No, that's OK, sweetie. I appreciate the thought, though. But dealing with my mother is something I need to handle myself," CD said. Then she added with a smirk, "But you can assist me, if you like."

Nate grinned. "Hey, that's what partners are for! Or best friends, or husbands, or hell---whatever title works. Take your pick."

CD laughed. "You dork. Give me a kiss." Nate, of course, quickly took the opportunity and gave her a big, long, passionate kiss. Then he pulled away. "Awww, why are you stopping so soon?" CD asked. She put out her bottom lip and gave him puppy dog eyes.

Nate smiled and replied, "Because you just had surgery, and if I don't stop now, I'm going to be in trouble." Then he winked at her.

CD giggled. "Trouble, huh? Is it any trouble I can help with?" She winked back at him.

"Not in your conditon, sweet bottom. But I'll take a rain check."

"Oooooh, yes, sir. I'd be happy to give you a rain check for that. But in the meantime, we can just get into bed and snuggle."

Nate wrapped his arms around CD. He inhaled the scent of her hair. "I like snuggling."

"Me, too."

"Your hair always smells so good."

CD laughed. "Um, thanks.....I guess. Or maybe you should give the compliments to Suave."

"To what?"

"Suave. You know, the shampoo and hairspray people. That's what you think smells so good."

Nate stood up, pulling CD up with him. They began to walk down the hallway to their bedroom for the night. Nate looked at CD and chuckled. "What?" CD asked.

"You are so weird," Nate replied.

CD grinned and kissed her husband on the cheek. "That makes two of us."

The next morning, Nate got up and went to work. CD stayed at home to rest. Mid-morning, she was in bed reading in her pajamas and her hair up in a claw. The phone on her nightstand rang. "Hello?" she said.

"Hi, Candace, please don't hang up before you hear me out," came the voice on the other line.

CD rolled her eyes at the sound of the voice. "Mom?"

"Yeah, that's me. I just wanted to apologize for just showing up last night. I realize now that that was inconsiderate of me. I should have called first. I can understand how upset you and your husband were, even though I still think that you two could have been nicer to me---"

"Mom."

"But still, I want to make it up to you. How about I take you out to lunch today and we can catch up? Are you busy?"

CD suppressed a groan. She really didn't want to do this. "Well, actually, I think Nate said he was going to bring lunch by today, and I don't think I'm up to going out just yet...."

"OK, then, can I join you?"

CD thought for a moment and then said, "Um, you know what? I think I'm feeling better already. I'll just call Nate and change our plans, and we can go out."

"Oh, that would be just great. Where did you want to go?"

"Um, I don't know. Anything's fine, really. I have been wanting to try out this tea room on Main Street, and Nate isn't really into the whole tea room scene, so I just haven't gotten there yet....."

"Sounds perfect. I'll meet you there at noon, OK?"

"Yeah, whatever," CD replied half heartedly.

"Candace, you know how I don't like that word. It's condescending."

"Oh, Mom, I can't hear you anymore! It's breaking up, I'm sorry! Damn these cordless phones!" CD shouted into the phone and hung up. 'Whew, thank goodness for the excuse of bad phone reception,' CD thought to herself. 'What the hell does she want NOW?'

That was great Tara!!! Now CD can go to Polly and apologize to that poor woman! And then Nate should apologize to her! And then they can live happily ever after!:D Post more!

CD hung up the phone after saying goodbye to her mother. She stared off into space, contemplating what she knew awaited her at lunch. All CD really wanted to do was stay home that day, but now she was trapped into having to be nice to Polly for a couple of hours. She then picked up the phone and called Nate.

“Basso,” he said.

“Hey,” CD replied.

“Hey yourself, hot cheeks. And how’s my beautiful patient today? You were still sleeping so peacefully when I left, and I didn’t want to wake you.”

CD chuckled. “Oh, I’m feeling a lot better today, thanks. But, uh, I just got an interesting call from my mom.”

Nate groaned. “Oh, geez. What did she want now?”

“Well, she said that she was sorry and wanted to take me out to lunch today. But I think that she has something else up her sleeve.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right. Are you going to go?”

“I guess so. I mean, I should at least be civil to her, you know? Even though she can be a real bitch, she is my mother, and she did apologize.”

Nate paused before he replied. Then he said, “Did you want to do this youself, or do you want me to come along, too?”

“That’s OK, sweetie. I can handle it. But I should get going. I’ll call you later and let you know how it went, alright?”

“OK, babe. Sounds good. Talk to you soon. Love you.”

“Love you, too. Bye,” CD said and hung up.

She dragged herself out of bed and into the shower. She then got dressed and ready to go, even putting a little extra time into her hair and flipped it out. ‘I need all the edge I can get for this,’ she thought to herself.

Polly met CD a little before noon, and they ordered their food and made small talk. Polly tried to restrain herself to not criticize CD on everything that she wished she could, because she needed to ask her a favor, and therefore needed CD in a good mood. CD couldn’t help but wonder what the heck was going on with her mother—why she was being nice to her all of a sudden. Halfway through their salads, CD took a deep breath and asked, "Mom....was there another reason for why you wanted to meet me today?"

Polly was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Well, alright, Candace. I may as well just go ahead and say it. I found out recently that your father passed away." Polly stared at CD, waiting for her reaction.

CD felt a mix of emotions. First her mother showed up out of the blue after 6 years, and now she said that her father had died. Sure, he left them when CD was a little girl, but still......she felt some sadness at the news. CD stared at her plate. "Wow," she muttered.

"Candace? Are you OK?" Polly asked.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah.....I'm fine......I guess.....when did this happen?"

"A month ago. I found out last week, but I just didn't know how to tell you. I know you've never been close to him, but it still comes as a surprise."

"No kidding."

"Apparently he was out running one day and had a heart attack."

CD was still in shock. "Wow. Well, at least he went quickly then."

Polly and CD sat in silence for a minute. Then Polly said, "I also found out that about 15 years ago, he married again and had a child."

CD dropped her fork on the plate. It clanged loudly, and the other people dining nearby glanced up at her. "He WHAT?!" CD nearly yelled.

"Candace! Keep your voice down! This is a public place, you know."

"EXCUSE ME?! First you tell me that my father died, now you tell me that he got married again and had a kid and yet he never told me, and now you want me to keep my voice down?!"

A waiter came rushing over to the table and whispered to CD, "Um, excuse me, ma'am, but you need to keep your voice down, or I'll have to ask you to leave."

CD whipped out her badge and flashed it at the waiter. "Look, bub, I'm a cop. Do you want this place investigated by the health department?"

"Um, no, I'm sorry, officer. You have a pleasant meal," he replied and walked away.

"And it's 'Inspector,' by the way!" CD called out after him. "Now, then, where were we....oh, yeah, you were telling me that I have this family that I didn't know about."

"Now, Candace, I didn't know about it, either. Please don't be mad at me."

CD took a deep breath. "Yeah, I know. I didn't mean to take it out on you. Well, I guess now THAT kid is left fatherless, too."

"And motherless," Polly added quietly.

"What did you say?" CD mumbled.

"I said that the little girl is motherless, too. She took off several years ago with another man."

"Wow, what goes around comes around."

"Candace, do you always have to be so negative?"

"No, Mom, I don't. Just when you're around."

"Well, can you just put aside your contempt for me for just 5 mintues to listen to what I have to say?"

"There's MORE?!" CD said in disbelief.

CD continued to stare at her mother, and then started to laugh. "Oh, that was a good one. You got me good. Can you imagine if that were true?!" Polly just stared at CD's reaction, and then looked down at her plate. CD noticed Polly's expression and stopped laughing. "Please tell me you were joking," she said.

Polly sadly shook her head. "No, honey, I'm sorry. It's the truth. You dad asked in his will that you assume care of his 12-year-old daughter, Kelsey."

"Mom, I just don't know....." CD began.

Polly cut her off. "You don't have to decide right this second, Candace. But she does really need to get placed in a permanent home, soon."

CD stared at the wall. She didn't know what do say, do, or think. It was all so sudden. First the news about even HAVING a sister, then her father dying, and now feeling pressured into opening up her home to a half-sister she had never even heard of before....all this on top of recovering from having her tubes untied. 'Oh my god......' she thought. 'My tubes. I want to have a baby. How can I even think about that now, with Kelsey on my hands, too?' Then CD said, "Who is keeping Kelsey now?"

"Her grandparents on her mother's side."

"Well, why can't they raise her?" CD asked.

"Well, I don't know, Candace. I think they have arthritis and some other health problems. But whatever the reason, your father thought that you would be the best for Kelsey."

CD still didn't know what to think. "Well, isn't that convenient for him.....he never put any effort into raising me, but then he went and had another little girl, whom he now wants ME to raise. Ironic. I mean, it's not her faulth.....it's not that I don't want her.....I'm just mad at Dad."

"I know you are, Candace. It's completely understandable. I'm not happy with him, either. But promise me you'll at least think about it?"

CD smiled. "Yeah, I will.

Just then, a middle-aged woman and a young, red-haired girl walked into the restaurant and over to Polly. Polly grinned at them. "Hey, Sally! Thanks so much for bringing her by!" she exclaimed. "Won't you sit down?"

CD stared in astonishment. 'It couldn't be....she wouldn't.....she couldn't.....' she thought.

The woman and girl sat down at the table. Polly said to CD, "Candace, honey, this is one of my friends from Sunflower Girls, Sally Gilmore. I asked her to come by, today, so that you could meet someone very special......Meet your little sister."

CD's jaw dropped yet again. She stared at the girl. She was quite pretty, with her shoulder-length ginger hair, blue eyes, and long, thin, willowly frame. "Um, hi.....I'm Candace.....but you can call me CD......I'm sorry for staring, but I'm just so surprised."

"Hi, CD. My name is Kelsey Dankow. But I guess you probably already knew that."

"Yeah, um....are you hungry? You want anything to eat?"

"No, that's OK. Sally took me to Mickey D's. So, I guess you know about my dad, huh?"

"Yeah, and I'm so sorry, Kelsey.....I wish I had known earlier," CD said.

"That's OK. My grandma and grandpa have been watching me. But they say that they are too old and tired to keep track of me all the time. I tell them that it's no big deal, because I'm going to be a teenager in just a couple of months, after all, and I can take care of myself, but I don't think they pay attention to that.

CD smiled. "I'm sure that they just want you to be safe and happy."

"Yeah, I know....so, you're my big sister, huh?"

"I guess so."

"I've heard about you. Daddy sometimes talked about his other little girl, Candy. He said that you were a hero, because you were this great police officer."

"He did, did he?" CD murmured. "Well, I am a police officer, but I'm no hero.....at least not by normal standards."

"Well, Daddy always said that you were. He always wanted me to meet you, but he was afraid that you wouldn't like him and send us away."

"Awww, Kelsey.....well, no matter what happened between our Dad and me, I would never send you away. You have my word on that."

CD went home that afternoon, and anxiously waited for Nate to come home. She paced around the house, trying to keep herself occupied. She thought that maybe if she kept busy, it would keep her mind off the decision at hand. Not only did she not know how to tell Nate, she especially didn’t know what to do about Kelsey.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, five o’clock rolled around and Nate walked through the door. CD went to the door to greet him. “Hey, honey!” she said with a grin, and gave him a kiss and a hug.

“Hey, sweet bottom. Are you feeling better?” Nate replied.

CD put a fake smile on. “Yeah, I’m feeling a lot better....I think I’m even going to make it into work tomorrow.”

“You sure? I don’t want you pushing yourself too soon.”

“Yeah, I’m sure. It was only a minor thing that they did. No big deal......” CD followed Nate into the bedroom so he could change out of his work clothes while they talked. CD sat down on the bed while Nate pulled his shirt over his head.

“So, how did lunch with your mom go?” Nate asked.

“It actually went better then I thought it would,” CD said.

“Wow, really? Polly didn’t want anything?”

CD thought for a moment. “Um....no, not really,” she lied. She couldn’t bring herself to bring up Kelsey just yet. She thought to herself, ‘Aww, the man just walked through the door. I’m not going to dump this on him just yet....maybe after dinner, and after I get some chocolate into him...’

Nate narrowed his eyes at CD. “Uh, OK.....I thought that you said that she probably wanted something.” He didn’t quite buy her answer, but couldn’t understand why she would be hiding something from him.

“No, it went just fine. Hey, you hungry?” CD answered, quickly trying to change the subject.

Of course, with the mention of food, Nate quickly forgot his curiosity. “Yeah, sure! Do you want to go out?”

“Yeah, sounds good. We could go to Julio’s, where the make those great steak quesadillas that you like. You know, the ones with the guacamole and sour cream....” CD slyly and nonchalantly mentioned. She knew that with those quesadillas in his belly, the news would be easier on him.

Nate’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. “Oh, yeah, totally! Yum!” he exclaimed with a grin. He kissed his wife on her cheek, and CD smiled. “You give the best suggestions, you know that?”

CD just slightly smiled and lifted her eyebrows. ‘I hope you keep that opinion later on, Natey boy,’ she thought.

A couple of hours later, Nate and CD sat at a window booth at Julio’s. CD had long since finished eating, but Nate was just now dabbing his mouth with his napkin and putting down his fork. CD always found it amusing to watch Nate eat. He always made such an event out of it, and was always up for it. ‘He must have a hollow leg,’ she thought. ‘It’s not fair. He must eat three times as much as I do, no problem, but I’m the one who worries about fitting into my clothes.’

The waitress came over to them to check on them. “Can I get you guys any dessert?” she asked.

Nate started to shake his head, but CD interrupted him. “Yeah, thanks. That would be great. What do you have that’s chocolate?”

Nate lifted his eyebrows and looked at CD in astonishment. He had never known her to order dessert at a restaurant, right after dinner. The waitress replied, “Yeah, we have a chocotaco. It’s a chocolate tortilla wafer, topped with chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips, and whipped cream.”

“OK, we’ll each have one of those,” CD replied. And bring him another beer,” CD said, pointing at Nate.

“I’m on it. I’ll bring those out to you in just a few minutes,” the waitress said and walked back towards the kitchen.

Nate was surprised, but he didn’t want to rock the boat so he didn’t say anything. A few minutes later, the waitress returned with the desserts and Nate’s beer. Nate immediately dug into his chocotaco with a big smile on his face. He looked like a kid in a candy store. He was actually kind of like a kid in a candy store, anyway.

CD ate the first half of her chocotaco, and then just picked at the rest of it, trying to put off telling Nate what she knew she had to tell him. She finally took a deep breath and said, “OK, I’ve got to tell you something, and I have to say it right now, and don’t interrupt me, because then I won’t be able to say it at all.”

Nate stared at her with a very worried face. The worst thoughts possible starting bombarding his brain. He thought of everything—that he had been fired, that she had been fired, that she didn’t want a baby after all, that she found out that she was still married to Paul, that she was leaving him----everything. “Tell me, honey,” he choked.


CD swallowed hard. “Well, it’s nothing bad, honey, so don’t worry.....” Nate’s shoulders eased up a little at that. CD continued. “Well, my mom told me today that my dad died about a month ago of a heart attack. Kind of ironic, isn’t it? You know, the fact that he doesn’t have a heart....” Nate nodded. “Anyway....well, I came to find out that he remarried about 15 years ago and had another daughter, a 12 year old named Kelsey. Her mom left when she was in preschool, so my dad had been raising her by himself until now. But now.....well, he left a will, with instructions as to who he wanted to raise her.”

“Well, that’s good. So is there an aunt or a grandma or something?” Nate said.

“There’s me.”

wow. i LOVED that last line. LOVED IT. i loved the entire post, of course, i was like AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW throughout most of it, hehe, and i really enjoyed the way should told him-- with the food, beer, and dessert. she's like a freakin genius!!! hehe, anyway, awesome possum as usual, and i want more ASAP!! :):D

LMAO, thanks! ;) :D I'm so flattered by all the replies! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this---I have just been so busy. Ahhh, for the days of carefree summer vacations. ;) I wish I had savored them more....but you really can't savor them unless you know what the alternative is like.

"I mean, whoa, that would be one CRAZY house. And we'd have to buy a house, too, for that matter. I mean, a baby, sure, we could fit that in our apartment, but a baby AND an almost teenager?!"

"Nate."

"You got me good, honey. You are the funniest, smartest woman I know. That was so great!"

"NATE!!!!" CD yelled.

That broke Nate out of his little world. He looked at CD. "What?"

"It's not a joke. It's a little girl. Well, a young lady, actually. And she needs us."

"CD.....wow. I mean, WOW. OK, I'm just really taken by surprise here....don't get me wrong, we'll do whatever we have to do of course, it's just so.....sudden."

"I know, Nate. I know. I'm shocked, too."

"I'm sure you are. This morning, you didn't even know that your dad was gone, and that you had a sister. I can't imagine how it's got to be to be in your shoes....."

"My shoes are still a better place to be than Kelsey's, unfortunately. I was kind of resistant at first, too, but then when I looked at her sweet, lost face...."

"Wait a minute---you've met her?!" Nate asked surprised.

CD nodded. "Mmm hmm. Mom had one of her friends bring her to lunch today. It was one thing just talking about her, but then I saw her and talked to her. She seemed so young and scared, Nate. It just tugged at my heart. I just felt this instant bond to her. Maybe it's because we're sisters."

Nate nodded and looked into CD's eys. He loved this woman so much, for reasons just like this. He loved that while she was as tough as she needed to be, she also was this soft, loving, precious woman beneath the exterior. "I think that maybe you bonded with her for more reason than that. I think that maybe you see a little bit of yourself in her."

CD was quiet for a moment. She looked at her melted dessert, and then back up at Nate's sincere face. "I think maybe you're right....I think I do see myself in her. She's had a tough childhood, too. And maybe that's why I want to help her so much. I don't want her to have to fight her way through life the way I had to. That's no way for a kid to live."

"I agree, honey.....are you sure about this, though? Do you want to wait a day or two to think about it? I'm sure that there is still some other provision if you couldn't do it."

"Yeah, there is. If for any reason, I can't or won't do it, Kelsey's mom's sister is supposed to take her. But I really think that this is my responsibility. I need to do this."

Nate smiled encouragingly at her. "I guess it's all settled, then. We can go take care of it tomorrow."

"Yep. And then we can go get Kelsey after work. I know we don't have stuff here for her, but I'm sure she has some things, and we can buy whatever she doesn't have."

"You are so amazing, CD. I just love you so incredibly much," Nate murmured.

CD smiled and blushed. "Aw, I'm nothing special. And don't cut yourself short, honey. I don't know how many men out there would be this willing to take someone else's child right into their home....I love you so much for it. For who you are."

Nate gave a little grin, and stood up from the table. Then he extended his hand to CD, who took it and stood up as well. "Come on. You can show me the way to a woman's heart," he said with a grin.

"You're on," CD replied with a big grin. "And about the woman's heart....it's right here, and you've always known the way to it."

Awwww, thank you so much for the sweetness, Lisa! I'm so happy now! And geez, I really think it's time for some more CD/Nate fic around here.....the tides have turned here lately.....so here goes! :)

The next day, CD and Nate went and talked to Teddy to get the legal guardianship process started. Then, after work, they drove to Kelsey's grandparents' home to pick her and her things up. As they pulled into the driveway, CD took a deep breath. "You OK, honey?" Nate asked.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Just a little nervous is all," she replied.

"Why?"

CD shrugged. "Well, I didn't think anything of it until the drive here, but now I'm getting worried that I'm not going to do a very good job. I mean, look at my own mom. I just don't want to be like her."

Nate sighed and put his hand on hers. "CD....you'll do great. I know you. You're not like your mom at all. I can promise you that. I mean, hey, would I be married to someone like that?" He cracked a little grin.

CD couldn't help but smile back. "Guess not."

"OK, then, shall we?" he said and put his hand on the door handle.

"Let's go," CD replied.

They got out of the car and walked up to the front door. Before they could ring the doorbell, the door popped open and Kelsey appeared at the door. Her grandmother followed behind her. "CD! You came!" Kelsey exclaimed.

CD grinned. "I sure did. And, oh, Kelsey, this is my husband, Nate."

Kelsey smiled. "Hi. Wow, he's your husband?" she asked.

"Yeah, why?" CD said.

"Um, no reason. So, can we go now?" Kelsey said.

"Um, yeah, in a minute. Let us talk to your grandma first, OK?"

"OK. I'll just put my stuff in your car while I wait."

"OK," CD said.

"Oh, and um CD?" Kelsey said.

"Yeah?"

"Could I talk to you for just a sec?" CD nodded and walked over to Kelsey. Kelsey whispered into her ear, "Nate is really cute!"

CD looked at Kelsey in surprise, and tried not to laugh. She did smile, though. "Yeah, he's pretty cute, isn't he?" CD said with a wink. "I sure know how to pick 'em." Kelsey laughed.

Kelsey's grandma invited CD and Nate into the house. They followed her inside. "So....you're Kelsey's sister, hmm?" she began.

"Yeah, I'm Candace DeLorenzo Basso, and this is my husband, Nate."

"Nice to meet you," Nate said and shook her hand.

"Nice to meet you, too. You can call me Karen."

"I guess my dad married your daughter and had Kelsey?" CD asked.

"Yeah. And listen, I am so grateful to you two for offering to take Kelsey into your home. Although I wish that I could take her, myself, especially since I wish I could have a second chance at raising my daughter, but I just don't think I'm up to it. It's hard for me to get around these days, and my husband's health isn't too good, either. It wouldn't be fair to Kelsey, with her becoming a teenager and all. She needs to be around young people."

CD and Nate smiled at each other. "Well, we appreciate you calling us 'young people,'" CD laughed.

"I'm also feeling better, now that I've gotten a chance to meet you. I was a little worried at first, but you appear to be pretty nice, normal people," Karen laughed.

"Oh, you just haven't seen CD after she's been up for 30 hours after a night on-call," Nate joked. He winked at CD, and CD elbowed him in the ribs.

"On-call?" Karen asked.

"Yeah, we're both cops. We're homicide inspectors with the SFPD," CD replied.

"Oh, my. That's quite impressive. I think it's so neat that you women these days do all these difficult jobs now. When I was young, we didn't have nearly the opportunities. I would never have dreamed of becoming a police officer."

"Yeah, it can be pretty exciting, sometimes. It can also be really hard, too," CD said.

"I can imagine. Now......I want to let you all get on your way, but remember that if you or Kelsey ever needs anything, please don't hesitate to contact me." She handed CD a piece of paper. "Here's my address and phone number. And if you don't mind, could I visit Kelsey every once in a while?"

"Oh, absolutely. We would love that," CD answered.

"We wouldn't have it any other way," Nate added.

The little makeshift family started out on their first night all together. They stopped by Burrito Bell on the way home to pick up some dinner. All three were pretty nervous about this new arrangement, although none of them dared show it. CD and Nate questioned themselves about how they could handle the responsibility of it all, while Kelsey was scared of living with strangers. Nice strangers, she admitted, but strangers nonetheless. She just hoped that they would be fair and fun. Little did she know what great people the Bassos really were.

When they got to the apartment door, CD unlocked it. Nate held it open for the "girls" and then followed them inside. CD thought of how at one time, she had come home to this empty apartment every night, while dreaming of Nate and having a life with him. Now here she was, coming home with Nate as her husband and now a young sister that they were going to raise together. The corners of her lips couldn't help but turn upwards a little at the thought of it.

CD turned around to face Kelsey. "OK, I'm going to get dinner on plates and on the table. Nate will help you put your things in the guest room. And you can freshen up in the bathroom before dinner, if you like. The place isn't very big, so you shouldn't have much of a problem finding your way around. Just make yourself at home."

Kelsey nodded. "Great, thanks." She went to pick up her biggest suitcase, but Nate stopped her.

"Hey, let me get that for you," he said and reached for it.

"Well, thanks, but I can handle it myself. I think that girls can do things just as well as boys can," she replied with a stubborn grin.

Nate looked at CD in surprise, and CD had an equally surprised look on her face. They were both smiling a little. Kelsey picked up the heavy suitcase, as well as a lighter tote bag, and started down the hallway. Nate walked over to CD and whispered into her ear, "I can see the family resemblance."

CD smiled, but lifted her eyebrows at him. "Oh? Family resemblance? What do you mean by that?"

"Well, you gotta admit, that was something you would have said, had you been in her situation. Well, not to me, though. You've never hesitated to let me do you heavy work for you," he replied and winked at her.

CD laughed, but tried to act like she was all offended. "Shut up, Nate Basso! I do NOT get you to do my heavy work for me!"

"Uhhhhhhh HUH!" Nate laughed back.

After dinner, CD said, "So, Kelsey, what do you want to do until bed? We could play a board game, or cards, or take a walk, or watch TV, or whatever...."

Kelsey yawned. "Well, actually, CD, if you don't mind, I thought I'd just go to my room for the night. It's been a long day, and I just kind of want to be alone now."

CD was a little surprise, but nodded. "Um, yeah, sure, go ahead. Maybe tomorrow we can go do something fun, then. It's our day off, so maybe we can go to the zoo or the beach or something."

"Yeah, sounds great. Well, thanks for everything, you guys. See you in the morning!" Kelsey replied and started down the hallway.

After she left the room, CD looked at Nate. "I wonder what that was all about?" she wondered aloud.

Nate shrugged. "Maybe she really was tired. She's been through a lot lately, poor kid."

"Yeah, I know. I hope that's all. Do you think she likes us?"

"For crying out loud, CD, I'm sure she does! It's just a lot of a young kid to handle all at once. It's going to take some time before she gets used to us, OK?"

CD nodded. "OK. OK, yeah. You're right." Then CD had a flashback of her own childhood, being all alone in her room, crying because her dad had left. She suddenly felt very sad at the thought of it. She looked at Nate, who was cleaning up the kitchen. Her eyes softened at the sight of him. He always made her feel so much better and safe, just knowing that he was nearby. She stood up, walked over to him, and wrapped her arms around his waist.

Nate looked at her, and pulled his own arms around her. "Hey, you."

"Hey. I need a hug," she replied simply.

Nate smiled, closed his eyes, and pulled her closer to him. She didn't need to say anything---he understood exactly what she was thinking and feeling. "I love you," he said softly. He knew that that's what she needed to hear.

"I love you, too, Nate," she mumbled into his shoulder.

The next morning, Kelsey awoke to the comforting aroma of pancakes and bacon being cooked. She quickly dressed and went to find the kitchen for the source of the good smells. There was CD at the stove, turning hot pancakes and bacon while Nate set the table and poured the juice. Kelsey couldn’t help but smile at the sight of it all. CD wore dark wash blue jeans, a white tank top and a baby blue hooded sweatshirt jacket. Nate wore jeans as well, a white t-shirt and an oversized hunter green flannel shirt. She stood there for a moment, not quite knowing if she should say something. CD sensed her there and looked up from the breakfast she was watching. “Well, hey, Kelsey. Good morning!” CD greeted her with a big smile.

At that, Nate looked up and smiled as well. “Good morning, sunshine!” he said in a cheerful voice.

Kelsey smiled a little, but wasn’t very used to strangers being so nice to her. “Hi,” she replied in a small, girlish voice.

“How did you sleep?” CD asked.

“Um, OK, thanks. What time is it?”

“It’s almost 10, sleepy head! We finally decided to just go ahead and make breakfast, hoping that the smell of food cooking would wake you up!” CD chuckled.

“Mmmm, well, it worked. Can I help?” Kelsey asked.

“No, that’s OK. We’re almost done. You can go ahead and take a seat and we’ll eat,” Nate replied. Then he grinned. “Hey, listen to that----I rhymed!” he laughed.

CD giggled. “Well, I guess you’re good for something, then.” She brushed past him as she walked to the table, and as she did, she pinched his butt, but discreetly so Kelsey wouldn’t notice.

Nate laughed. His eyes sparkled at CD as they always did when she caught is attention—which was pretty damn often. “I like to think I’m good for more things than that,” he joked.

CD smirked at him. “Mmm....yeah, there might be another thing or two that you’re good for.” She then grinned and winked at Nate.

Kelsey decided that this conversation was going downhill fast, so she tried to change the subject. “So....where’s that breakfast?”

“Oh, yeah, right here,” CD said and put the steaming plates down on the table. The three of them hungrily dug into the food. No one said anything for a few minutes, because they were too busy eating. Then CD said, “So, Kelsey....we have the whole day off—what would you like to do?”

Kelsey shrugged. “I dunno....”

Nate put a forkful of pancake dripping with maple syrup into his mouth and chewed. He quickly swallowed and said, “Well....we could go to the Bay, or the mall, or Ghiradelli square, or....”

Kelsey still looked indifferent and picked at a piece of bacon. Nate and CD exchanged glances. CD said, “Do you need any clothes or bathroom stuff or school stuff or anything?”

“Yeah, I guess so,” Kelsey reluctantly replied.

“Alright then, as soon as we get this all cleaned up, we can all go out and go shopping,” CD replied. Then she leaned towards her and purposefully whispered loud enough for Nate to hear, “And Nate is really good for carrying shopping bags around. I’ve gotten him to do it for me for like a YEAR now.”

Nate pretended to be offended. “HEY! So THAT’S why you always had all these errands to run while we were driving around! You just wanted me to carry your stuff for you!”

CD giggled. “Awww, damn, you figured it out. Oh well—we’re married now—you’re stuck with me, whether you like it or not.”

“I’d be happy to be stuck to you forever,” Nate responded. He sweetly and subtly smiled at CD. CD looked at him, but then lowered her eyes out of flattery.

CD, Nate, and Kelsey first went to Walmart to get some school and bathroom supplies, and then headed to the mall to go clothes shopping. CD helped Kelsey pick out some cute outfits, and Nate offered is bag-carrying services. Well, he rather agreed to CD’s offering of his bag-carrying services. They were just finishing up, and walking towards the food court. CD got an idea in her head and said, “Hey, Kelsey, have you ever tried iced coffee?”

Kelsey grinned. “Oh, YEAH. I love it!”

CD smiled and glanced at Nate. “Would you like to have some Gloria Bean’s with us, then?”

“Sure! My favorite is the mint oreo mocha chiller.”

“Me too!” CD laughed.

They waited in line for several minutes as usual. When they finally got up to the counter, CD one chiller for herself, and one for Kelsey. Then she said to Nate, “What do you want? They don’t have what you usually get at Seattle’s.”

Nate read the board over a couple of times. Then he said, “Do you have anything manly? You know, like something that actually somewhat resembles COFFEE?”

The girl behind the counter laughed and replied, “Um, yeah, we have the house blend. But if you’re in the mood for trying something strong, the espresso’s really good.”

“What’s that?” Nate asked.

“Well, it’s just like coffee, except it’s stronger. It’s like condensed coffee.”

“Coffee needs to be condensed?” Nate wondered aloud. Then he said, “Well, OK, why not. Give me one of those.”

A few minutes later, the three of them all had their coffees and sat down on a bench, with CD in the middle. She and Kelsey gleefully started on their mocha chillers, starting the same way—scooping up the whipped cream with their straws and eating it off the straw. Nate was a little put out at the minuscule size of his espresso, but figured that maybe since it was ‘condensed,’ it was small. He took a sip of it and swallowed it. He didn’t think anything of it until it hit—and that’s when his eyes bugged out of his head. “Aaaaahhhh! What IS this?!” he almost shouted.

“Shhhhh, Nate! What’s wrong?” CD said.

“This espresso crap! This isn’t ‘strong,’ it’s paint thinner!” he exclaimed.

CD couldn’t help but laugh. “Yeah, I know.”

“Then why on earth did you let me get it?”

“Eh, just for a little fun.”

“Glad you find me so amusing,” Nate grumbled, but smiled. He and CD ended up sharing her mocha chiller, but they really didn’t mind. They always loved the excuse of having to be that close to each other, and there aren’t too many things closer than drinking out of the same cup.

Nate and CD brought Kelsey home mid-afternoon. Kelsey went to her new room to try out her new clothes, while CD went to get some laundry started. Nate watched her bend over to pick up the laundry basket. "Hey, let me help you, hun," he said and reached for the basket.

"Oh, thanks. Here, you take this, and I'll get the towels," CD replied. She picked up the bath towels and knocked on Kelsey's door. "Kelsey?"

"Yeah?" came the reply from the other side.

"We're going down to the laundry room for a while, but we'll be back soon."

"OK. See you later!" Kelsey said.

"Guess she's doing alright," Nate whispered with a surprised look on his face.

"Guess so," CD chuckled.

They picked up the laundry and went to the laundry room. They put everything into the washers. CD finished up and turned around from one of them to find Nate leaning on the dryer opposite her, with a cocky smile on his face. 'God, he looks hot,' CD thought to herself. She gave a little smile and her eyes travelled over his frame. She'd been so occupied, first with getting her tubes untied, then dealing with her mother's visit and now Kelsey, that they hadn't had any time to be a 'couple' in weeks. They both knew that it had been too long since they'd really gotten to enjoy each other's touch. They kept their eyes on each other's gaze.

"Hey there," Nate said in a voice that made shivers go up CD's spine.

"Hey to you, too, partner," CD said in a voice that equalled his. She smiled and moved in closer to him. Nate moved in closer as well, and he put his arms around her waist. CD brought her hands up to place on his arms. "You know....now that Kelsey is going to be living with us, we are going to have to figure something out," CD said and winked at him.

"Well, did I ever tell you about my laundry room fantasy?" Nate chuckled.

"You didn't need to," CD grinned. Then she brushed her lips against his ever so slightly. Nate reeled at the tease of it, but couldn't take more than a second of it. He kissed her with passion and fire. His hands caressed her back and shoulders, while CD felt herself melt into him. CD's shirt came off, and they pawed hungrily at each other. Then CD thought she heard footsteps, so she quickly pulled back and tried to put her shirt back on.

"What?" Nate hissed.

"Someone coming!" CD hissed back and pointed at the door the best she could, as her shirt was stuck around her neck and elbows.

Nate quickly helped her out with the shirt, which was just in time as one of their neighbors entered the door at the time. The neighbor didn't look at them, and CD and Nate made a dash for the door. Before they could escape, though, the neigbor simply said, "You know, I would put a chair under the doorknob next time if I were you."

CD and Nate's eyes grew huge, and they looked at each other, before taking off down the hallway. When they got back to their door, CD whispered, "Maybe we can get Jin to come over and watch a movie with Kelsey, and you and I can get a hotel room for an hour!"

Nate grinned at that idea. "Hey, works for me!"

CD laughed. "It works for you anywhere, anytime."

CD called Jinny and explained the "situation" to her. The next night, Jinny gladly agreed to come and spend the evening at CD and Nate's house. Teddy would have come, too, but he was out of town on business. That left CD, Nate, Kelsey, and Jinny enjoying a pizza dinner together. After eating and cleaning up, CD said, "Hey, Kelsey? Do you mind if Jinny stays here with you while Nate and I go out for a couple of hours?"

"Where are you going?" Kelsey replied.

"Oh, we just need a little couple time. Kind of like a date, you know?" CD answered with an innocent smile, but then her eyes shifted to Nate. She tried to keep from grinning too conspicuously, hoping that Kelsey wouldn't figure out what was going on.

"I promise, I'll have her back by 10," Nate joked.

"Uh, yeah, I guess it's OK by me.....but what about Jinny?" Kelsey looked at CD, then looked at Jinny, and then back to CD.

"Oh, Jinny's cool with it," CD replied.

"Yeah, sure, Jinny's cool with it," Jinny laughed. "Seriously, Kelsey, I'd love to just hang out with you for a little while so your sister and brother-in-law can go out for a couple of hours. Hey, I even brought with a few movies that you can choose from for us to watch!"

Kelsey's face perked up at that. "Really? What did you bring?"

"Well, I didn't know what you'd like, so I brought a variety. I brought Princess Diaries in case you like that stuff, Freaky Friday, Star Wars, and Spy Kids."

"Wow, really? Cool! Wow, I don't know....." Kelsey said.

CD decided that now was a good time to slip away. She signaled to Nate, and they headed towards the door. "We'll see you later, Kels!" CD said as she opened the door.

"OK, we'll be here!" Kelsey replied and waved from the sofa.

Nate shut the door behind them. "Ah, we're alone," he whispered with a sultry voice.

CD grinned at him. "We sure are."

Nate grabbed her shoulders and firmly kissed her. Then they just hugged each other as tightly as possible. "Oh, I miss this so much. When I hold you, I never want to let you go."

CD smiled. "Well, honey, we don't have to let each other go for HOURS, OK?"

Nate grinned and nodded. He gave her another kiss and then said, "Let's get going, then."

"You got it, hot stuff," CD purred. Nate took her hand, and they walked down the hallway.

He sat down and started the engine. “So.....where are we going?” CD asked.

“It’s a surprise,” Nate replied with a wink.

“OK, Nate, I don’t know for sure what you’re thinking, but if it’s what I think you’re thinking, the answer is NO, the backseat is NOT a surprise.”

“Hmmm, why not? The backseat seems kind of surprising to me,” Nate chuckled. He loved toying with her like this. Nate put the car into drive and started to pull away from the parking spot.

“Well, it’s not to me. I’ve done it before, and trust me, it’s not as fun as it’s cracked up to be. There’s nowhere to put your head or legs, and someone always ends up with their butt pressed up against the window,” CD groaned.

“Oh, please. That was with Paul. That doesn’t count,” Nate smirked. CD rolled her eyes, crossed her arms, and stared out the window. Nate decided that the joke was over. “OK, you win CD.....I AM taking you somewhere special----and it’s not the backseat.”

CD smirked back at him. “Good.”

They drove for about another 10 minutes. Finally Nate stopped in front of a ritzy downtown hotel, called “Las Vegas Nights.” CD was kind of curious as to why Nate would pick this place. “Um....it looks beautiful and all, honey, but why this place?” she asked.

Nate smiled at her. “I thought it would remind us of our wedding and honeymoon. I know we can’t go back to Las Vegas right now, but it seems like the next best thing.”

“Awwww.......” CD whispered. She looked into Nate’s eyes with a sweet smile. “That’s so sweet and romantic. You’re right—that IS special.”

Nate grinned at CD. She leaned in and passionately kissed him. “Let’s get to that room, then,” she purred and gave a seductive ‘come hither’ look at him. Nate gulped and parked the car.

15 minutes later, Nate and CD let themselves into their room. “I must say, it’s going to be a little embarrassing checking out again after an hour. I’ve never not spent a whole night at a hotel!” CD laughed.

“Eh, no biggie,” Nate smirked. “If it makes you feel better, though, we can come back in the morning to check out.”

CD laughed. “Nah, that’s OK, honey. It’s fine. Hey, we’re married, not a couple of teenagers or having an affair or anything!”

Nate chuckled and took her in his arms. “That’s right, babe! And now.....I’d love to make mad, passionate love to my wife for a little while, if that’s OK with you,” he said in a funny voice and started playfully nibbling on CD’s ear.

CD shrieked with laughter. “Stop it, Nate! That tickles!” she giggled, but wanted him to keep going on. She loved to feel his touch again. She wrapped her arms tighter around him, and Nate began to kiss her neck and shoulders. “And of COURSE it’s OK with me......it’s OK for me and you ANYTIME!” Nate grinned. CD cupped his face in her hands and kissed him. She placed her hands on the back of his head and gripped it. “I’ve missed this.....I love you so much.”

“Oh, baby, I’ve missed this, too....” Nate moaned as he felt her hands explore his body. “And I love you too, more than I can tell you.” Things progressed, and soon they were both wanting each other at that very moment. CD froze up for a second, as if she suddenly remembered something she’d forgotten.

“What?” Nate asked.

“I forgot something.” She pulled away from Nate, went over to her purse, and retrieved a condom from it.

“Why the hell do you think we need THAT?!” Nate exclaimed.

“HELLO, Nate! I got my tubed untied! I could get pregnant!” she said and sat back down on the bed. She started to unwrap the packet.

“EXACTLY! Um, am I missing something? Because, see, I thought that you got your tubes untied so you WOULD get pregnant!” Poor Nate was so confused. “Or was that just for fun?!”

CD gritted her teeth. “Why do you have to go and spoil a perfect moment?”

“ME?! Me spoil the moment?! What about you! I thought you wanted a baby!”

“I DO, Nate! And it WAS the right time, but now we have Kelsey.....and I just don’t think we should go and get pregnant right now. It would be too much for her. It’s too much change in too short of time.”

Nate sighed. They had been so close to starting their own family. “I can see your point, CD.....I just....really want to have a baby of our own. I know we don’t have a lot of time left, either. I mean, we’re young and all, but we’re not 25......”

CD rolled her eyes. “Oh, please. What’s this WE stuff. You mean ME, because men can have babies anytime.”

“That’s not true. Men’s fertility goes down, too,” Nate replied.

CD sighed. “OK....look, honey. I really want to have a baby, too, but we both know that we need to give Kelsey some time to adjust before she gets the news that I’m having a baby. I mean, it might take a while to get pregnant, but I could also get pregnant on our first try. Who knows.”

“Yeah, you’re right.....” Nate sighed. “You’re right. OK.....how about we put it on hold for now, but let’s just make a pact that when we think she’s ready to handle the news, we start trying.”

“You got it, sweetie,” CD replied with a smile. “I can’t wait to have a baby with you. Well, I mean, I obviously CAN, but you know what I mean.”

Nate laughed. “Yeah, I know what you mean.....now then, where were we?”

CD giggled, reached for Nate, and they tumbled into the bed again together.

An hour later, Nate and CD emerged from their hotel room again. They were still straightening their clothes and smoothing their hair, but each had very goofy yet satisfied grins on their faces. CD reached up to her ears to make sure that her earrings were still there as they walked down the hallway. “Wait—I lost an earring!” she exclaimed.

“I, dear. Sorry about that. Want to go back and check the room?” Nate replied.

CD looked at him to respond, but a sparkle in his hair caught the light. “Stop. Hold still for just a sec.” She stared at his hair and reached up to it.

Nate rolled his eyes. “Please, CD. I already know I’ve got a few grey hairs. You don’t need to keep reminding me.”

CD giggled and rolled her eyes back at him. “Not that, silly,” she replied. “Got it!” CD gripped the missing earring between her thumb and forefinger. “My earring was stuck in your hair!” she laughed.

Nate laughed at that too and winked at her. “Sorry ‘bout that. Guess we got pretty carried away back there.”

CD grinned. “I should hope so!” She gave him a short, but big kiss. Then she stretched her arm across Nate’s back as they continued down the hallway, and Nate did the same to her. “I’m so happy, Nate,” she said.

“I am, too, love,” Nate replied with a smile that equaled hers. “And I love you so incredibly much.”

“I love you, too. And thank you so much for bringing me here. It took a lot of thought, to come up with the idea of this place. Very romantic, I must say,” she said with a sly grin.

“Thanks. But it’s only because, that trip that we took to Las Vegas was the best time of my life.”

“Mine, too. And people say that quickie Vegas weddings don’t last,” she laughed.

Nate grinned. “Well, we’re living proof that they can. Maybe not all of them, but we’re special. We have a love that beat the odds.”

CD smiled and her eyes sparkled at her life partner—her soulmate. “We sure do.”

When Nate and CD let themselves back into their apartment, they stopped and smiled when they saw Kelsey and Jinny asleep. The movie was over and the TV had a solid blue screen. Jinny laid against the armrest of the sofa, and Kelsey was leaning up against her. They had a soft burgundy throw blanket spread across their laps. “Awwww......” CD cooed. She almost teared up, the scene was so sweet and precious.

Nate draped his arm across CD’s shoulders and pulled her close next to himself. “She looks so sweet and innocent sleeping there, that you’d never know that she’s such a royal handful in her waking hours,” he said.

CD was shocked. “Who? Kelsey?”

Nate chuckled. “No, Jinny!”

CD couldn’t help but laugh at that, as well. “Yeah, you got a point, there.” They watched in silence for a minute. “I hate to wake Jinny up. She seems so happy there. I’ll bet she’d make a great mom.”

“Yeah, I’m sure she would,” Nate replied.


CD went over to Jinny and rubbed her arm. “Jin.....Jinny....” she whispered.

“Geez, Teddy, I don’t have to be in til 10 today,” Jinny groaned and swatted at CD’s hand.

CD and Nate looked at each other and laughed. “It’s me, CD, silly! It’s time for you to go home!” CD giggled.

Jinny opened her eyes and stretched. “Oh, hey, guys.” She smiled. “Did you have a good time?”

“Yeah, it was great, thanks,” Nate replied with a grin.

“I’ll bet!” Jinny laughed. “Well, I should be getting on home.”

“OK, thanks so much, Jin. We really appreciate you doing this for us. If you ever have kids, we’d be happy to return the favor,” CD said.

Jinny just smiled and stood up to get her things. Nate said, “Was Kelsey any trouble for you?”

“Oh, naw. She’s a great kid. I can see you she’s your sister, CD,” Jinny replied.

CD chuckled. “Thanks.....I guess!”

Several months passed. Kelsey was really starting to feel at home in her new surroundings, with her new family. She still had bouts of sadness that her life was so different now, but she still had her friends from before, and she was making some new friends at her new school. CD and Nate had even hosted a slumber party for Kelsey and her girlfriends for her 13th birthday. That was one experience that Nate and CD knew they would NEVER forget, both for its happy memories AND its insanity on their part. Now they were in the process of buying a house for the three of them to live in, as the apartment was now getting rather crowded.

The last night in their apartment, Nate and CD were lying in bed, talking before sleep. CD was nestled in Nate’s arms as she did every night. This was the part of the day that they both looked forward to more than anything—when time was their own and no one was there to interrupt them. The soft gleam of the moonlight and the streetlight below their window cast illumination around the bedroom. Their faces glowed in the lights of night and they kissed. CD gazed into Nate’s eyes. She brushed her fingers against his cheek and smiled contentedly at him. “OK,” she said.

“Hmmm?” Nate mumbled.

“I said, ‘OK.’” CD replied.

“OK to what?” Nate asked confused.

“I think Kelsey could handle a little change around here now.”

“Well, yeah, I hope so. I mean, we’re moving and all.....” Nate replied.

“Nate....not just that. I mean.....you want to make a baby or what?”

Nate’s eyes bugged out at CD in shock. “Are you serious?!” he choked.

CD rolled her eyes and giggled. “Uh, YEAH! This shouldn’t be such a surprise, you know.”

“You mean you really want a baby? As in you want to start trying RIGHT NOW???!!!!” Nate exclaimed. A huge grin spread across his face and he gripped her shoulders with his hands.

CD grinned and nodded. “You got it, mister!” she giggled.

“ALRIGHT!” Nate exclaimed. He didn’t need to be told twice. He kissed her and CD happily giggled as they held each other and sank beneath the covers.

The next morning before Kelsey awoke, Nate and CD went at it again in their oh-so-difficult work of making a baby. They chased each other into the shower, hoping to save time but of course ending up in taking much longer time in the long run than they had anticipated. “Hmmm, if we keep up a pace like this, we should be pregnant in no time,” Nate murmured into CD’s ear just as they were finishing making love.

CD chuckled. “I’m not so sure that it improves our odds THAT much!”

Nate laughed as well. “Well, it couldn’t hurt to try.”

“No, it certainly couldn’t,” CD agreed with a sexy grin and a wink. She gave Nate one more kiss and then stepped out of the shower. She wrapped a towel around herself and starting to ring out her hair. “Now we’ll have to put this on hold til tonight after we move in, or we won’t have anywhere to sleep tonight!”

“Awww.....” Nate playfully whined. “Do we have to?”

CD laughed at his goofiness. “Yes, Nathan honey. But just think of the payoff after your long day’s work.”

“Well, alright,” he replied and winked at her.

4 more months passed, and yet still CD wasn’t getting pregnant. Even though she and Nate faithfully and constantly tried, it wasn’t happening. CD started getting worried that after her tubes being tied, she wouldn’t be able to conceive now. Each month when CD took a pregnancy test that turned out negative, both were disappointed, but tried to not let the other know. Finally, CD decided that if it didn’t happen this month, she would have to go see a doctor.

CD stuck her head out of the women’s locker room at the division. She craned her neck to see Nate’s desk, but he wasn’t there. ‘Great,’ she thought. ‘Perfect timing for him to be busy.’ She buried the ovulation test in the trash can and then left to find Nate. She looked through the one-way mirror of the interrogation room, and there was Nate with a suspect. She stood there, tapping her foot for all of ten seconds. To her, it seemed an eternity. Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore and opened the door.

Nate looked at her in shock. “Um, did you need something?” he said, a little annoyed that she was interrupting his interrogation.

CD nodded and smiled. “Yeah, I need your input with a case of extreme urgency.”

“Uh, OK......could you wait a minute please?” he asked, still a little confused.

“Well, OK, but no longer. This is really important,” CD replied. She shut the door behind her and watched again from the mirror.

Nate realized that the opportunity to get information from this guy was shot now, for the time being at least, so he just wrapped up and said that he’d talk to him again later. He had an
officer take him back to the holding cell, and then Nate joined up with CD outside of the interrogation room. “What’s wrong? Did someone else get killed or what?” he asked.

CD had a playful grin on her face. She entwined her fingers in his and played with his hands. “No, Nate, sweetie.....I’m ovulating, silly!”

It was all Nate could do to keep from snapping at her. “CD! That could’ve waited an hour! I almost had this guy in the BAG!”

“Yeah, it could’ve waited an hour, but we could do it TWICE in that amount of time, doubling our chances of getting pregnant!”

“I know, honey, it’s just.....this is getting a little out of hand. I mean, it’s one thing to fool around on our lunch hour or at home and so on, but.....don’t you think we’re getting a little crazy here?”

“Nate! We don’t have time for this! Let’s stop fighting and just GO!” she exclaimed, grabbed his hand and dragged him into a supply closet.

All of two minutes later, they were exiting the closet again, straightening their clothes as they went. “We’ve, um, picked up some speed at this,” Nate remarked.

“Yeah, well.....we can take more time at home, but here, it’s really only necessary for you to get off.”

“What? CD! OK, this IS getting crazy. We’re not even enjoying sex anymore.”

“So what’s your point? Don’t you want a baby?” CD asked, a little put off.

“I do, CD! Of course I do! You know that. I just think that maybe we need to go talk to a fertility specialist or something.”

“So what’s your point? Don’t you want a baby?” CD asked, a little put off.

“I do, CD! Of course I do! You know that. I just think that maybe we need to go talk to a fertility specialist or something.”

"A FERTILITY specialist?!?!" CD gasped.

"Um, yeah......" Nate whispered but started backing up a little.

CD crossed her arms and glared at him.

A week later, CD went into her doctor's office for her appointment. She explained to the doctor
that she and Nate had been trying to get pregnant for four months now, with no success. The doctor took some tests and told CD that she'd have the results in a few days.

After the exam, CD walked back out to the waiting room, where Nate was waiting for her. Nate stood up as she approached. He had a worried and concerned look on his face. "What did the doctor say?" Nate asked, with his hands on his hips.

"Don't know yet. She took some tests, and we're supposed to f-find out in a f-few days," CD stammered. She was obviously troubled by that fact that she wasn't conceiving. She blinked back a few tears."

"Awww, honey, sweetie, are you OK?" Nate asked and pulled her into his arms for an embrace. CD buried her face in his chest and clutched his shirt with her hands. She let his protective, caring arms surround her and hold her tight.

"No.....I'm not," she blubbered. Then she looked up at him. "What if I can't get pregnant?" she whispered with a scared look on her face.

Nate felt his heart well up at her reaction. He hated it when he couldn't solve all of the things in life that affected his sweetheart. "Then we just won't get pregnant," Nate replied soothingly. He brushed back the wisps of stray hairs from her face, and then tucked them behind her ears.

"But I want us to have a baby so much."

"I know, baby, I know," Nate replied and placed his hand on the back of her head to calm her. "But just know that, no matter what, I love you more than anything, and I won't love you any less if we can't have a baby. It was just the two of us when we started out, and we never imagined anything more than that. We never even knew that we would end up together in the first place. But now.....here we are, crazy in love, married, and we already have one great kid at home."

"Yeah, I know....."

"And even if we can't have our own baby by blood, we can always adopt a child that needs a good home. Nobody knows better than us that there are plenty of kids in need out there."

CD nodded. Her big, sad, trusting blue eyes gazed into Nate's eyes and connected with him. "I know....you're right." She pulled back and wiped at her eyes with her hands.

Nate pulled a kleenex out of the box on one of the waiting room end tables and dabbed at her tears. "Here."

CD looked at him and smiled. She took the kleenex and dried her tears. Then Nate kissed the rest of her tears away. Finally, they started walking towards the exit doors. Nate placed his hand on CD's back, and CD did the same to him. CD looked at him and smiled. "Hey, you know, the doc said that you should get tested, too."

Nate looked at her in shock. "Test for what?"

"To see if you've got enough swimmers to do the job," she chuckled.

Nate's eyes bugged out. "How would they find THAT out?!"

CD just looked at him with a huge grin and winked at him. "I'd tell you, but I don't know if you're old enough to handle it," she laughed.

"Oh my gosh! Do they really test that?!"

"Yep!" she giggled.

"Fine, but if I've got to do THAT, you're coming with me, missy!"

CD laughed. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Every time the phone rang for the next two days, CD jumped with a start. She was so anxious about getting the results of her tests. Finally, on the third day, the doctor called. “Mrs. Basso....I think it would be best if you came in to hear this news,” she started.

CD’s throat quickly formed a lump. “What do you mean?” she whispered.

“I just think that, considering your circumstances, it would be better if you came in to talk. Even bring your husband, if you wish.”

“Look, Dr. Weaver, I NEED to know now. Whatever it is, I can’t wait one more day to find out,” CD replied with annoyance.

“OK, if you wish......well, congratulations, Mrs. Basso— you’re pregnant!”

CD’s jaw dropped and was speechless. When she regained her ability to speak, she said, “OK, that is NOT funny!”

“I’m serious, Inspector! Your worries are over—you’re having a baby! Way to go!”

CD was silent for another moment, as she let the words sink in. “I’m pregnant?” she whispered.

“Uh- huh!” the doctor giggled. “See, now, THIS is why I wanted you to come in.”

“Uh....th-th-thank you.......” CD whispered.

“Now, I’m going to transfer you over to the receptionist so you can make your first pre-natal appointment, OK?”

CD nodded. “Yeah.....thanks.”

“Oh, my pleasure. I wish all the news that I give could be this good.”

CD then made a date for her next appointment. She put down her phone, in a daze. She had a huge smile on her face, but just stared off into space. After a minute, her gaze drifted over her desk, and her eyes caught the picture on her desk of her and Nate at the little celebration party that the division had thrown for them when they arrived back from their Las Vegas wedding, a year before. “Nate!” she exclaimed, and bolted from her desk. She ran around the 6th floor like a mad woman, desperately searching for her husband. Finally she pulled out her cell phone and dialed his number. “Nate!” she exclaimed again, only this time into the phone.

Nate grinned at the sound of her voice. “Hey, babe. Did you miss me already?”

“Um, what?” CD asked, confused. “Where are you?”

“Um, HELLO, CD! I’m picking up your sister from school, THAT’S where I am!” he laughed.


“Oh, yeah....yeah.....” CD replied absentmindedly. “I forgot.”

Nate laughed again. “That’s OK, hun, I know you’re thinking about a lot right now.....it’s just that I looked up and it was almost 3, and you were so busy working away, so I just went to get her myself.”

“Aw, thanks so much, honey. Yeah, I was a little distracted. But I have some good news that I want to tell you about later.”

Nate’s ears perked up at that. “Oh, really? Did you hear back from the doctor?”

“Yeah,” CD sighed contentedly. “Do you know if Kelsey has plans for tonight?”

“Um, let me ask her,” he replied and put his hand over the receiver. He asked Kelsey, who was seated in the car beside him. Then he put the phone back up to his face. “She said that she was going to her friend Morgan’s tonight, if that was OK.....why?”

“Um, nothing,” CD smiled. “It just gives us a chance to talk alone for a little while, that’s all. Tell Kelsey that I’ll see her later tonight, and that I love her, OK?”

“OK, babe.”

“Oh.....and I’m going to cook something special for us tonight, OK?”

Nate grinned. “You do know the way to a man’s heart, CD.”

“I love you, Nate.”

“I love you, too, CD.”

While CD went to pick up groceries for the romantic dinner that night, Jinny and Teddy sat at the Anchorside, having dinner before they went home for the night. Teddy was busy munching on his burger, while Jinny picked at her fries and stared off into space. Teddy noticed how quiet she was. “What’s wrong, hun?” he asked.

“Oh, I’m just worried about CD finding out that I’m pregnant,” Jinny replied. She, herself, found out a few weeks before that she was pregnant, but hadn’t wanted to tell CD, because she knew that is wouldn’t be easy news for her to hear, with her not being able to conceive.

“Yeah, I know what you mean.....” Teddy said. “But you’re going to have to tell her sooner or later. I mean, you can’t go around hiding behind big clothes and furniture and your notebook all the time—you know, like they do on TV.”

“Yeah, it’s kind of laughable, isn’t it?” Jinny chuckled.

“And then, what would you do when you do have the baby? Say you’re on a 6 month sabbatical, travelling around the world, and sending her a postcard from some exotic place once a week, only with a San Francisco postmark? Not going to work, my dear....” he chuckled.

Jinny laughed, too, at that. “Yeah, if she believed THAT, I’d have to talk to whoever graded her Inspector’s test.”

“Totally!” Teddy laughed.

“But anyway.....I know I’m going to have to tell her....I just want to wait until I absolutely have to, you know? Buy myself some time.....maybe I’ll even get lucky and she’ll get pregnant before I show.”

“Speaking of showing....” Teddy began and glanced at her belly. “Don’t you think that with us having a baby and all, it’s time we got married? You know, before people start talking?”

Jinny laughed. “Teddy, PLEASE—I was the town slut until just a couple of years ago. For me, THIS is like being a nun.”

Teddy smiled. “Yeah, I know, but.....OK, I might as well tell you—my parents have already told people that we’re married.”

“They WHAT?!” Jinny exclaimed, and choked a little on her diet, caffeine-free coke. Teddy quickly jumped up and patted her back, while wiping her face with his napkin. When she was finished, he sat back down. “Again, they told people WHAT?!”

“Look, Jin, I’m sorry, but that’s just how they are.....they’re excited about the grandchild and all, but having one born out of wedlock is not exactly something they had on their to-do list. So they told their friends that we got married, before we got pregnant.”

“Oh my god.....this I cannot believe....” Jinny groaned and stared at the ceiling. She rested her hands on her still slender stomach.

“So, anyway, Jin, I was thinking, what the hay? Want to get married? What do you say?”

“I thought that’s what you said,” she replied. Teddy shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Her reaction wasn’t quite what he’d had in mind. “Why do you want to get married? I thought we were doing just fine.”

“Jinny....why do I want to marry you? Because I love you, and we’re having a baby, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, that’s why! What other reason do you need?”

“I don’t know, it’s just.....not something I’d thought about.”

“Well, I have thought a lot about it, sweetie....” Teddy replied, and placed his hands on hers, across the table. He gazed into her eyes. “Look....you don’t have to give me an answer tonight. But will you at least think about it?”

Jinny nodded. “Yeah.....I’ll think about it.

Meanwhile, CD finished picking up the groceries and went home to start dinner. She walked inside, and was greeted at the door with a big, sensuous kiss by Nate. “Hey,” he said and grinned, as he gazed into her eyes.

“Hey to you, too,” she replied with a grin that matched his. “Did you miss me?”

“Mmm hmmm,” he answered with a nod, and then kissed her again, only this time on the neck.

CD laughed, dropped the plastic bags, and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Aren’t you hungry?” she giggled.

“Not for food,” Nate replied with a devilish grin, and swept her up in his arms. CD let out a series of giggles as they made their way up the stairs.

Some time later, CD and Nate laid naked, tangled in the sheets together, enjoying the afterglow of their lovemaking. They had their arms wrapped around each other, and CD’s head rested on Nate’s chest. She playfully traced her fingers up and down his chest. Nate stroked her soft, flaxen hair. “Nate.....” CD started, and took a deep breath.

“Mmmm,” Nate replied, his eyes half closed.

“I got a call from my doctor today.”


“Oh, yeah. Did you get those results back yet?”

“Oh, yeah,” CD replied with a big smile. Then she turned her head to look into his eyes. “Honey....we’re going to have a baby,” she whispered. A huge smile spread across her face, and her eyes sparkled.

Nate wasn’t sure if she meant that they COULD have a baby, or, dare he hope, that she was already pregnant. “We are? Like you mean that we COULD?”

“No, sweet pea,” CD chuckled. “I mean....we ARE having a baby, as in we’ll have a baby in less than 9 months!”

Nate’s eyes grew huge, and his face lit up. “We ARE??!!!! Oh my gosh, baby, I LOVE you!” he loudly exclaimed, grabbed her shoulders, and peppered her with kisses. CD just giggled in response. He pulled her into a big hug. “We’re having a BABY!!!” he shouted with glee. Then he asked in all sincerity, “Is it a boy or a girl?”

CD looked at him in obvious surprise. “Uh huh!” she replied and nodded with a smile.

“So, Jinny, have you given any more thought to my question?” Teddy asked Jinny over the phone. Jinny was walking into the division, her cell phone planted on her ear. She was munching on a pickle and jalapeño nachos as she went, and a cup of grape koolade was in her hand.

“What question?” she asked with a grin, knowing full well what he meant.

“You know what question....” Teddy groaned. “I asked you a month ago, already! Isn’t that enough time to think about it?”

“Hmmm, I don’t know, Teddy....maybe I need a little more convincing,” she giggled with emphasis on the word “convincing.”

“Like what kind of convincing?”

“Surprise me,” she replied. Then she saw CD planted at her desk, munching on a drumstick ice cream cone, spreading peanut butter on it as she went. “Sorry, Teddy, I’ve got to go. I think CD’s got some fritos in her desk.”

“Why would CD have fritos in her desk?” Teddy asked, confused.

“I don’t know.....she’s been eating a lot, though, lately. That girl and I have GOT to hang out more.”

Teddy laughed. “OK, well, enjoy the fritos, and I’ll see you later, OK, hun?”

“Um, yeah, sure,” Jinny replied and flipped the phone shut, as the whiff of chocolate drifted through the air. “Do I smell chocolate?” she loudly demanded to the office in general.

Raina’s head slowly appeared from behind the doorway of the coffee bar room. “Um, that’s probably me.....” she had a scared look on her face.

Jinny began to march over. CD’s ears perked up at the sound of the word “chocolate.” “Chocolate? Did somebody say chocolate?” she asked, and quickly joined Jinny.

Raina was holding a chocolate donut with chocolate frosting in her hand, and held it behind her back. “Look, I was in a rush this morning, and this is all I have til lunch! You’ve stolen my food everyday this week—can’t I just have this one donut?”

CD and Jinny looked at each other. “What do you say, Jin?” CD asked. Then they both looked back at Raina.

“Well, alright, Raina.....but just this once,” Jinny grumbled as she and CD began to walk back to their desks. “Hey, CD, you still have those fritos in your desk?” Jinny asked.

“What fritos?” CD asked, while quickly locking her bottom drawer shut. Jinny just stuck her tongue at CD and then turned to her own work. Then CD eyed Jinny suspiciously and said, “Jinny.....why are you having all these food cravings?”

Jinny eyed CD suspiciously as well. “No reason.....why are YOU having all these food cravings?”

“No reason......maybe I’ve just gotten tired of watching what I eat. A person can only eat so many grapefruit halves for breakfast before it starts to get to them.” At the thought of grapefruit, a wave of nausea hit CD. “Excuse me,” she blurted out and ran out the door and down the hallway to the bathroom.

‘Now where could CD have gone?’ Jinny thought. ‘Right after she said grapefruit, she turned green.....’ Then the thought of grapefruit hit Jinny, and she ran down the hallway as well.

A couple of minutes later found both women washing up at the sinks. “So, how far along are YOU?” Jinny asked with a knowing smirk.

“8 weeks....” CD replied without thinking. “How about YOU?”

Jinny laughed. “10 weeks. Wait til Cap hears this!”

CD laughed as well. “Poor Captain.....”

Then Jinny hugged CD. “I can’t believe you finally got pregnant! I’m so happy for you!”

CD hugged Jinny back. “Thanks! Yeah, Nate and Kelsey and I are all really excited. But how about YOU?! You’re PREGNANT?! Congratulations!”

Jinny beamed with pride. “Yep! Surprises you, doesn’t it?”

“Well, I....I....just didn’t think that you wanted to be a mom.”

Jinny chuckled. “Well, neither did I, until that little test strip came back blue! It’s amazing how a piece of plastic can change minds.”

“Is Teddy excited?”

“Oh, yeah. He even asked me to marry him, but I haven’t given him my answer yet.”

“You haven’t given him your answer yet?! What are you WAITING for, woman?!” CD laughed.

Finally, Teddy decided that he had to take drastic action, if he wanted Jinny to marry him sometime before their kid went to kindergarten. He enlisted the help of Nate and CD, who gladly agreed to assist him. They wanted to see Jinny and Teddy marry, almost as much as Teddy did. The four of them and Kelsey all went out to dinner that Saturday night, and had a great time together, as usual. Kelsey loved being included with the “grown-ups,” as she was getting to be one, herself. Jinny and CD ate everything in sight, much to the amusement of the guys.

After dinner was over, Teddy’s cell phone went off. He looked at it, and then with a face of regret, said to Jinny, “Hey, honey, I’m really sorry, but I’ve got to go. There’s some late-breaking news with one of my cases, and I have to go take care of it.”

Jinny’s face fell. “Awww, really? Even on a Saturday night? That’s really strange.”

“I know, baby, I’m sorry. I promise I’ll be back as soon as I can, OK?” Teddy replied. Jinny got sad eyes, stuck her lower lip out, and made a show of caressing her belly. Teddy’s brown eyes softened at that. “Oh, please, Jin, don’t do that to me. You know what it does to me.”

“I know,” Jinny replied with a playful smirk. Nate and CD had to do their best to keep from breaking out laughing.

Teddy sighed and stood up. “Hey, sorry about this, guys,” he said to CD and Nate. “Would you mind taking Jinny home for me?”

“Sure, no problem,” CD replied with a knowing smile. Teddy smiled and left.

A few minutes later, they decided to head on home. Nate and Kelsey sat up front, while the two pregnant women chatted in the back. Jinny noticed that Nate was driving, for a change. “Oh my gosh, CD, you’re actually letting Nate drive for once?” she feigned shock.

CD chuckled. “Yeah......well, I got lazy.”

Jinny chuckled as well. Then Nate said to Kelsey, “Hey, could you find that evening request show that CD likes?” Kelsey nodded and found the right station. They chattered and listened to the program.

A few songs and a commercial break later, the DJ took another call. “And let’s take another call. Ted from San Francisco, you’re on the air.”

Jinny stopped talking when she heard the DJ say Ted. ‘Could it be?’ she thought, but then dismissed it from her mind.

Then Teddy’s voice came on over the radio. “Hi, I’d like to request Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles,’ for my girlfriend, Jinny.”

“Awww, that’s great. She must be pretty special.”

“Yeah, she is. She’s amazing, and I love her to death. I just want her to know that I would walk a thousand miles for her, anytime. I’d walk a million miles for her. And that’s why I also want to ask her......Jinny, will you marry me?”

The music started playing then, and the call ended. Jinny sat in the backseat of Nate and CD’s car, speechless. She had an expression on her face of both surprise and happiness. Her mouth dropped, as if to say “aw,” but nothing came out. Nate, CD, and Kelsey watched her with satisfied glee that they had pulled off their scheme. Jinny quickly pulled her cell phone out of her purse and speed-dialed Teddy. A few tears rolled down her cheek, and the first word that came out of her mouth was, “Yes!”

Teddy grinned, on his side of the phone conversation. “Yes to what?” he asked, knowing full well what she meant.

“Yes, Theodore Blumenthal, I will marry you!” Jinny exclaimed, overcome with emotion.

“I love you so much, Jinny,” Teddy replied.

“I love you, too! Thank you so much! That song is beautiful!”

“I’m glad you liked it. And be sure to thank my partners in crime there, because I couldn’t have done this without them.”

“Oh, I will, I will. I just want to see you now, though. Where are you?”

“Home. And by my watch, you should be right about there by now.”

Jinny looked out the window, and sure enough, Nate just turned onto her street. She saw Teddy standing outside of their building, one hand on the phone, the other hand in his pocket. He was watching her and smiling. Nate pulled into the driveway, and Jinny mumbled her words of thanks as she jumped out of the car. Jinny and Teddy ran to meet each other, and fell into each other’s arms as they kissed. Then Teddy slid a diamond ring onto Jinny’s ring finger, and kissed her again. Nate and CD’s eyes travelled from the happy couple to each other. Their eyes shone with happiness for Jinny and Teddy, and love for each other. CD gave Nate a kiss, short, but sweet. He squeezed her hand, and then they drove off to their own cozy home for the night.

CD, Nate, and Kelsey went home. Later that night, CD and Kelsey were lying on CD and Nate’s bed together, watching The Facts of Life together, as they often did. Nate, of course, always quickly excused himself from the room whenever that show was on. Kelsey laid with her head resting on CD’s rounded belly. “Do you think I can hear the baby?” Kelsey asked.

CD chuckled. “I don’t know, sweetie. Probably not for a while yet. It’s still really small. I think it can hear us, though.”

“Can you feel it moving around inside of you?”

“Not yet. At least, I don’t think so. I’m sure it’s moving, but it’s so weak that I can’t really feel anything yet. I can’t wait until I feel the first kick. I’m so excited.”

Kelsey smiled. “I’m excited, too. I can’t believe I’m going to be an aunt. It’s so cool.”

“It sure is, honey.”

“The only weird thing is, that it doesn’t feel like I’m an aunt. I mean, I’m not old enough, I don’t think. All the aunts I know are at least in their twenties. Would you mind if I just called the baby my little brother of sister?”

CD grinned. “That would be SO great, Kels. I wouldn’t mind at all. I’m sure the baby won’t care, either.” They both laughed at that.

Kelsey laid her head back down on CD’s stomach for a few more minutes. Then she sat up again and took a deep breath. “CD?”

“Hmmm.”

“I.....I don’t want to be your sister anymore,” Kelsey said slowly.

CD was alarmed at that. “What do you mean, Kelsey?”

“I mean.....I really don’t think of you as my sister, anymore. And I don’t think of Nate as my brother-in-law, either. I think of you guys as my parents.”

“Awwwwwwww!” CD replied. Tears sprang to her eyes as she pulled Kelsey in for a big hug. The sweetness of it, combined with her pregnancy hormones, put her emotions into overdrive. “That is the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard! OK, maybe not sweeter than when Nate first told me that he loves me, but it’s right up there next to it!” CD and Kelsey both laughed at those words.

“Can I call you ‘mom?’”

“Oh, you sure can, sweetheart! I’d love that! I’m so honored to be your mom, because I think you’re really great!” CD said and winked at Kelsey playfully.


Then Kelsey quieted again, and said, “I was also thinking......I want to call Nate ‘Dad,’ but then I feel really guilty about my own dad. I mean, wouldn’t that be like telling him that he never existed?”

CD’s face softened at that. “Awww, sweetie......I think our dad would want whatever makes you happy, and if that means calling Nate ‘Dad,’ I think you should do it. I know that Nate would be thrilled about it!”

“He would?”

CD nodded. “He sure would. He loves you just as much as I do.” Kelsey smiled. Then CD called out, “Nate, honey, could you come in here for a minute?”

Soon Nate appeared in the doorway. “What flavor?” he sighed.

CD giggled. “No, honey, no flavor this time. Come and sit down here with us.” She patted the spot beside her on the mattress.

“Um, you know I don’t watch that girl who looks like Jinny and all her little friends.....” Nate replied, confused.

CD chuckled. “We’ll turn it off for a minute. Kelsey was just saying that there’s something she wants to tell you.” She smiled and waited for Kelsey.

Kelsey smiled as well. “Nate, do you mind if I call you ‘Dad?’”

A huge grin spread across Nate’s face. He looked at CD in surprise, and then back at Kelsey. “It would be an honor, honey,” he replied and hugged her.

More months slipped by. Jinny and Teddy were married in a quiet little ceremony with only their families and close friends present. CD and Jinny were rapidly blossoming in size, as well, with their due dates fast approaching. It was now three weeks before CD’s due date, and she and Nate were sleeping soundly in their bed. It was a cool night, and the windows were slightly open, allowing the night breeze to circulate around the room. CD laid on her side, as this was the only position she could find comfort to sleep in anymore. Nate’s arm stretched across her middle, as he was accustomed to. CD found herself dreaming that someone was kicking her in the stomach and awoke. That’s when she realized that she wasn’t just being kicked, but it was from the inside, and that sharp pains accompanied them as well. She struggled to sit up beneath the weight of her belly and shook Nate’s shoulder.

Nate groaned in reply, but didn’t wake up. CD persisted. “Nate,” she whispered and shook him again.

“Mmm, five more minutes,” Nate replied and pulled the pillow over his head.

That’s when CD slapped his arm. “NATE!” she exclaimed in a loud voice and pulled the pillow off of his face.

Nate opened his eyes and looked at her. “What?”

“What do you think?! HELLO, I’m in labor!” she curtly replied and struggled out of bed.

Nate was now fully alert at that bit of news. “Oh my gosh! Really? OK, don’t panic, I’ve got this ALL planned out.” He quickly jumped out of bed and stood beside the bed in nothing but his boxer shorts. “You just get into the car, and I’ll take care of everything else!”

CD was pulling on the only outfit that she still fit into—overalls and one of Nate’s t-shirts. As she pulled her hair up into a ponytail, she watched Nate then run down the hallway, and heard the garage door slam shut. CD rolled her eyes, picked up her duffel bag that she’d packed weeks before, and waddled down the hallway and stairs. She further waddled through the kitchen to the garage door, opened it, and stood there smiling as she looked at Nate starting the car. “Um, you forgot something,” she called out with an amused face.

Nate stared back at her. “What?”

“ME!” CD replied.

Nate slapped his forehead and jumped out of the car. “Oh my gosh, honey, I’m so sorry!” He ran over to CD and guided her back into the house. “I just got too carried away, I guess.”

CD was just so amused at this all. She gave a smirk. “That’s OK, honey. But just remember that it’s REALLY important to get the pregnant lady TO the hospital, if you want her to have a baby.” Nate nodded with an embarrassed face. “And,” she added, looking down at his body, “you MIGHT want to put some clothes on before we go out in public.”


Nate looked down at himself and his cheeks turned pink. “Um, stay here, I’ll be right back.” He dashed off up the stairs again, and then reappeared half a minute later, clad in jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt. “OK, let’s go,” he said.

“You forgot something else,” CD added. Nate looked at her in confusion. “Kelsey?” CD prompted. “She wouldn’t want to miss this for the world.”

“Right right right,” Nate replied. He made another trip up the stairs to get Kelsey, and then helped CD get into the car. This time, he remembered to carry her bag for her. By that time, Kelsey had dressed and climbed into the backseat, and off they went.

ROTF!!!!!! :lol: :lol: :lol: man, that poor guy!!!! LOL, hope it's not TOO close to delivery!! could u imagine him delivering the baby in the CAR?! who knows WHAT he'd do!!! ;)

Nate and Kelsey helped a waddling CD into the hospital’s main entrance. CD held her belly with both hands as another contraction came on. She was already trying out her breathing exercises like crazy—“Whoo whoo shkeee, whoo whoo shkee, whoo whoo shkee.”

“Honey, don’t you think you should save that for when the contractions get really bad?” Nate asked.

CD glared at him. “How about I knee you in the groin, and then when you double over, I ask you if you should save that for later?”

“OK....” Nate said, and guided her over to the desk. They checked in and CD was admitted and put into a wheelchair. They were then taken to labor and delivery, where CD was placed in an empty birthing room. It was a room for two, but the other bed was unoccupied. Nate and Kelsey scrubbed up and then sat beside the bed, Nate holding CD’s hand the whole time.

After an hour or so of labor, the nurse and technician began wheeling another expectant mother into CD’s room. CD and Nate both looked over to see who the poor thing was that was about to join in the fun, but the nurse pulled the dividing curtain closed before they could see. The curiosity left CD as another painful wave of contractions came on. “I want ice, damn it!” CD yelled out.

Nate looked over at the empty cup that used to hold the ice. “Um, there’s no more left, sweetie, could you hold on a minute?”

CD grabbed Nate’s shirt to pull him closer. “What do you think?” she replied through gritted teeth.

Nate gulped. “Kelsey, honey, could you get your mom some ice, please?” he whispered and handed her the cup.

“Sure,” she answered and left. A minute later, she came back and handed Nate the cup of ice. Nate offered CD the ice, and she promptly popped a cube into her mouth.

Kelsey was grinning, but with a surprised look on her face. “What?” CD asked. “I know I look like roadkill, you don’t need to remind me.”

Kelsey laughed. “No, not that. You know your new neighbor?” she asked, pointing to the curtain. CD nodded. “You’ll never guess who it is.”

“Jinny,” Nate joked, and CD actually cracked a giggle at that.

Kelsey nodded her head up and down. “Oh, very funny, Kelsey,” CD groaned.

“I’m serious! Ask for yourself!”

“Fine,” CD said. “Jinny? Is that you over there?” CD yelled out.

“Who the hell wants to know?” came a shout from the other side of the curtain. “Look, lady, I’ve got contractions and a gun. Any questions?”

CD and Nate’s eyes bugged out at each other in shock. “Oh my gosh, it IS her!” CD exclaimed.

Nate got up and slightly pulled back the curtain. “Well well well, look who we have here!” he said to Jinny and Teddy, who stared up at him in shock.

“What are YOU doing here?” Jinny asked.

“Eh, I just like hanging out in the maternity ward. It’s a laugh riot,” Nate chuckled. “Why do you think I’m here? CD’s in labor on the other side!”

“NO!” Teddy exclaimed in shock. “Are you serious?”

Nate simply pulled back the curtain, revealing CD. “Hey there!” she said and gave a little wave. Then, though, another contraction began to come on and she gave a scream. “Naaaaaaaate!!!! Get your ass over here so I can kick it!”

“What are the odds.....” Teddy muttered and shook his head.

And now, sadly, all good things must come to an end.....:( ...anyone remember how this started out? Way back after the second season finale, and I had CD and Nate run off to Vegas to get married? Oh, how far they've come....lol...wish this had really happened.

~6 hours later~

Jinny was now ready to deliver---something that CD was pissed off about, as, after all, SHE had gone into labor first. As Jinny wasa being wheeled out, CD called after her, "Oh, you ALWAYS have to be so competive, don't you?!" Jinny's only response, of course, was a labor scream. That only ticked CD off more.

Nate tried to be soothing. He caressed her cheek and said in a soft voice, "Sweetie, every delivery is different. It will be your time any minute now, OK?"

"Easy for you to say," she grumbled. "And by the way, I am never going to let you touch me again, just so you know."

Nate looked over at the attending nurse in shock. The nurse just chuckled. "Don't worry, Mr. Basso, they all say that," she laughed, and then said to CD, "Let's check your cervix again, OK?"

"Whatever," CD replied.

The nurse checked her, and then came back up. "I'm going to go get the doctor to make sure, but I think you're just about ready to go!" she said with a grin.

"Finally!" CD sighed with relief.

Less than an hour later, Nate was squeezed in next to CD on her hospital bed, as they took turns holding their new little baby boy. "Well, hey there, Austin......" CD cooed at her tiny, precious child as he snuggled in her arms. Nate had the biggest smile on his face, as his fingers traced the baby's miniature hands. "He looks just like you," CD said with an adoring smile at her husband.

Nate smiled at the love of his life---his beautiful wife and mother of his baby. "I don't think so, sweetie---he's beautiful, just like his mommy."

CD blushed. "I guess he looks like both of us, then."

"He sure does, sweetheart. This is so amazing. He's amazing. YOU'RE amazing. I love you so incredibly much."

"I love you so incredibly much, too, Nate. More than I can say. And I'm so happy." With that, they closed in for a lingering kiss.

Just as they were pulling apart again, there was a knock on the open door, and they looked up to see Teddy standing in the doorway, holding what looked like a bunched up pink blanket in his arms. "Hey hey hey!" he announced with a grin.

"Hey!" CD and Nate both replied.

"I have someone here that I thought you'd want to meet," Teddy continued, and walked over the the bedside and sat down. "Meet our little Autumn Elise Blumenthal."

CD and Nate gazed at the little black-haired baby girl in his arms. "She's gorgous, Teddy," CD replied. "Jinny must be so proud."

"Oh, she is. And so happy. She's sorry that she can't show you Autumn herself, but she's so exhausted, the poor thing."

"I can relate to that," CD chuckled with a weary smile.

"This is our baby. He's a son," Nate announced with a proud grin.

Teddy chuckled. "Awww, what a great little guy! That is so wonderful, you guys! And can you believe it? Our kids have the same birthday!"

CD and Nate both chuckled. "Yeah, it's pretty amazing! I keep telling you, there's something in that coffee at the Division," CD said.

Teddy laughed. "Yeah....well, I should let you get some rest. I don't want to be away from Jinny for too long. I'll see you crowd later, OK?"

CD and Nate nodded, and CD placed Austin in Nate's arms. Then she settled back into the pillows of her bed, and rested her hand on Nate's lap. "Well, August 16th, 2004, it is," CD murmured happily. "Do you remember what was going on this date two years ago?"

Possibilities flashed through Nate's mind. He knew it wasn't their anniversary, but he wasn't sure what it was. He guessed. "Um, that Nazi bomb case?"

CD chuckled to herself and then gazed at him. "Yeah....but more importantly, it was when I realized how much I loved you." Nate smiled and draped one arm over her shoulders. "You have changed my life so much, Nate, in such a relatively short period of time.....and I can't imagine how I ever lived before it."

Nate kissed her, and then pulled back and gazed at her with such love. He was happier than he had ever dreamed possible. "I don't think I really ever lived before you, either, CD."

CD smiled back at him. A feeling of complete security and peace came over her, as well as exhaustion. Her eyes closed, and she drifted off to sleep. Nate held her in his arms---the only way he wanted it to ever be, forever and for always.
