Default Cassie Newman the only child to grow up on a soap

Back in the Spring of 1997, we were introduced to 7 year old Cassie on the Young and the Restless, we later found out she was Sharon Newman's daughter from a high school affair. Now 8 years later little Cassie is now 15 and all grown up.

Now, I cannot recall another time when a child has grown up on a soap opera without being aged, I know Cassie was not born on the Young and the Restless, but the soaps usually skip the years between 11-16 because teens are usually going through the ugly years with zits, attempting to grow facial hair, boobs starting to bulge out, etc.

Cassie is the only character in my recollection whom has gone through these years, obviously the main reason is by rapidly aging her would mean it would make the characters of Nick and Sharon look older which the writers definately are not trying to achieve. For instance, Noah Newman was born in 1997 and he is still about 8 years old, but on other soaps anyone born in 1997 would be about 15 or 16 now.

Wow that is so true. Great post!

No, it isn't true at all.

AMC's Tad Martin is evidence. He was introduced in 1973 as ten years old, and by 1981, when Michael E. Knight took over, he was 18, though Knight was 22 at the time.

It's safe to say that Tad is now 42 years old, or around that much.

Another character that grew up in real time was Greta Powers on The Doctors.

You make good points, but I think Miss Golden was talking about Cammryn Grimes is the only character to play Cassie. There has been no one else who has come in to make it a time span, like the Tad character. For example, I remember one summer watching AMC, the Tad character left or ran away but somehow the next few months go by and we see an 18 year old Tad. That didn't happen with Cassie's character.

That's true. Even then, though, I believe Erin Torpey was the only actress to play Jessica Buchanan on OLTL from 1991 to *I think* 2002, when Bree Williamson took over.

robyn richards has been on General Hospital for years until she was recently let go as the role was recast. she is what...15 now? she had been on most of her life since a young child.
also, on General Hospital, the girl that played robin scorpio appeared when she was about big enough to talk. she stayed on until she was in her late teens and still returns every once in awhile.
the point made by the original post is a valid observation. it may happen, but it doesn't happen often.

Don't forget Kimberly McCullough from GH, she started as Robin Scorpio when she was 5 in the mid 80's and played the role till she was about 20 I think.

I don't think so, makeup covers up freckles well.

There are rumors flying that Cassie is the death that occurs on Y & R this week, and I have to agree by all the flashbacks, etc. So if Cassie bites the dust, I guess Nick and Sharon will be de-aged again.

I guess it is true. I would put spoiler, but I guess it's not since it's already on magazine covers in all the stores. It's so weird though, because Cassie has been such a big part of the show over the years, and there's nothing in the soap magazines about Camryn Grimes leaving the show.

I was in the grocery store and picked up the current soap opera digest which has the SPOILER all over the cover.

Well, it can't get much clearer that, can it?!

Really though, if this is true(and permanent) it's pretty sad. Especially since she has grown up on the show.

I saw in the new Soap Opera Weekly that she succumbs to an infection

It really is sad. This came as a HUGE shock to me. Though, I do think Y&R needed something like this. It's been rather blah lately, and this will really shake things up. In that issue the head writer said he killed her off to break up Nick and Sharon. I heard Camryn Grimes was pretty shocked since she just signed on for another year. She said she doesn't even remember life before Y&R.
