It's the 70's and early 80's all over again. Yikes.

You know, I'm surprised gas stayed as low as it did for decades. It barely went up when I was a kid... so I remember $1 and cheaper gas growing up. I remember when gas stations would have days where they'd sell gas for 50 or 75 cents, and they'd have cars lined up for miles. 75-cent gas, no more.

I know gas was still pretty freaking low when I graduated from HS and that was in '03. $1.20 at least. I remember gas prices hovering at $1.05 - $1.15 the summer before my junior year in 2001.

That's why I walk everywhere. It's around $3.90 here for midgrade, (CO) last time I tanked it was $3.50. I tank once a month, if I'm lucky. People should start walking more. Since last September (when I started walking/biking/blading) I've saved SO much money and have lost around 30lbs in the process. Totally a win/win situation.

Wish I could, but I live within walking distance of NOTHING. I used to, but now I can't even walk to the post office.

i've been buying online more than ever whenever i can. i did most of last years xmas shopping that way and have been buying birthday presents that way too. my car has become strictly for work although if gas goes over 4.50, which the odds of it happening are increasing, i will look into buying a monthly bus pass. only trouble there is i work 20-25 miles away and although buses run til 1am the last one where i live most likely stops runs to that location about 8pm. i'd have to come into work around 3 hours earlier. i know come fall i'll be using electric blankets and extra layers because i can;t afford both the cost of heating my house and running my vehicle if this continues.

I had a friend in college who was ten years older than me who got his driver's license in 1978 and remembers gas being 52 (if not 48) cents a gallon, only to see it go up to 73 cents within a year. This was in southwest Ohio, by the way. On a trip out to California in 1980 he saw gas for $1.05 and took a picture!

Unleaded for 96 cents in 1999... What a deal!

I have pictures around here of gas price signs from 2004, when gas prices were averaging $1.40/$1.50... I need to find these and post them.

i don't get it, back in 2004/2005 gas was $1.67 and now prices are coming close to the $4.50 range. isn't that kind of increase supposed to gradually happen through decades. this is ridiculous! what is the justification?

Yea, that sucks, I used to live in a small town 5 years ago and literally I had to drive to get to any sign of civilization. Haaaaated it. I'm a city boy, If I don't have chaos and noise surrounding me at all hours of the day, I go insane. But that's why i moved to a big city for school, knowing that gas was creeping up and up. I'm moving back to Chicago in 2 months (expeeeeensive gas) but living right in the middle of the city next to the subway line so I can sell my car.

Prices have been high for a loooong time, we're just starting to feel it now in this country. Gas in Canada has always been a bit more expensive than here and don't get me started on Europe. I have friends living in Germany and Holland, and after converting to dollars and gallons, avergae gas over there is about $8.50 a gallon. And has been for a looong time. But the reason that they don't feel the pinch as much as we do is because they have MUCH MUCH better public transportation infrastructure. Busses, trams, trolleys, subways, elevated trains, etc. Only a handful of cities in this country have half as much as that. This is why I'm moving back to Chicago, I don't like being forced to use a car just to live day to day life. Man was made to walk and walk is what I'm going to do damnit lol.
