'FlashForward' Finds New Leaders

ABC Studios had found some new chiefs for "FlashForward."

Jessika Borsiczky, Lisa Zwerling and Tim Lea will serve as showrunners for the ABC drama, the network confirmed Wednesday. They replace David Goyer, who last week said he was stepping aside as showrunner (but staying on as executive producer).

Meanwhile, ABC had decided to hit rewind on its episode order for "FlashForward."

The network has quietly trimmed to 22 the number of episodes of the first-year ABC Studios drama it plans to produce this season. It had mostly recently planned on making 23 hours of the show.

Per ABC insiders, once the network decided to push back the show's return until March 18 -- getting out of the way of the "American Idol" monster -- ABC decided it didn't need all 23 episodes.

Not sure if they could do this in the early part of summer, since NBA season is still going on, but it would be great to pair it with Wipeout:

Shaq is back at ABC.

Alphabet net has given a second season order to "Shaq Vs.," its summer reality series starring basketball star Shaquille O'Neal.

Media Rights Capital and Dick Clark Prods. are behind the unscripted series, and will produce six episodes of the show.

"Shaq Vs." stars O'Neal as he faces off against top athletes in their respective fields. In season one, O'Neal faced off with the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger in football, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh in beach volleyball, the St. Louis Cardinals' Albert Pujols in baseball, Oscar de la Hoya in boxing and Michael Phelps in swimming.

Despite being given a handicap advantage, O'Neal wound up losing each week.

According to MRC's Joe Hipps, the producers plan to take O'Neal out of sports in some segments this year -- placing him in other competitions such as spelling bees or competitive eating. But the shows will still mostly focus on sports.

"This is our third show with ABC but our first pickup," said MRC's Modi Wiczyk. "Everyone's happy with the show, and that's been incredibly encouraging."

Hipps said the producers are already mapping out the production, in order to work around O'Neal's basketball schedule. The show also already has a list of top-tier athletes who expressed interest last year in appearing on the show.

Dick Clark Prods.' Orly Adelson, Will Staeger and Barry Adelman are exec producers, along with O'Neal, Scott Messick, Perry Rogers and Steve Nash. (Nash reportedly received the EP credit after protesting that O'Neal took the original idea for the show from him.)

MRC's other TV credits include HBO's "The Ricky Gervais Show" and "The Life and Times of Tim," as well as the upcoming "House of Cards," from David Fincher.

So ABC renews what really was an unsuccessful summer series and we still wait to see if they will renew Shark Tank which is a fair better show in quality and more entertaining. Unless they plan on airing this on weekends in place of the non-sports programming they have, this renewal makes no sense.

Shaq Vs. did decent. It was on its own really and aired at the end of summer. With a lead-in and airing right after the NBA Finals, it would do well. Imagine this airing after Wipeout on Wednesdays. It would do so much better than Japanese Game Show. I expect Shark Tank to return, so no need to worry about that.

The Middle did a series high last night in 18-49 with a 3.0 rating and its best since premiere in total viewers. Modern Family also tied a series high in 18-49 with a 4.2 rating (done twice before), so if it goes up in the finals, it is a series high. I believe as of now, it was at its third best in total viewers last night (so if it goes up a bit in finals it will be at second best ever in total viewers).

Modern Family is completely Idol-repellent. Actually, it's almost doing better against Idol than it was without it. The Middle is also doing fantastic, and is at this point crushing competing Gary Unmarried. But Cougar Town - what has happened to this show? The last few episodes have been terrible. Ratings are terrible. If it doesnt pick up, do you think ABC would reverse its decision on a second season?

Cougar Town is fine. I think it is hurt by Idol. It was doing 3.4 before Idol came. I think it needs to air at a later time next season. 2.8 would be great at 10pm.

ABC has done decetly this season. Some flops and some hits and with LOST ending i now think ABC need some new strong hit shows to keep their network fresh and exciting.

Its how TV works.

I like the Comedy Wednesday repeats schedule against the Olympics -- good move. I suggest they pull The Deep End for next week and air last night's Grey's again at 8pm (leading into the all-new episode at 9). The final two episodes of The Deep End can air Feb. 25 from 8-10 (leading into the scheduled Grey's repeat pushing it to 10pm).
