Given that this is the first time that I have watched the show I have no idea that it would look different on the DVDs. I think Me sped them up.

^They don't seem sped up. The video is just jumpy and the colors Are way too bright. And for some reason, the sound is also different.

That's strange.

After watching it longer, the film kind of looks like bad 3D. I'm not sure exactly what it is about the sound but it just sounds "off".

Any 1980s videotaped series that rolls credits (virtually all do) has this problem with jitter. It's not a digitizing thing (since my DVD recorded MFs from TBS don't have this problem)...so it's either the HD process or the Filmlook process or both. It'd be really nice if some expert could explain why it happens ands why the don't or can't fix it.

Do the DVDs look the same as the episodes on METV, or are they clearer? I know some other 1980s DVDs don't have the best quality (Facts of Life, for one), but i guess that goes with the era, too.

I googled this 'jitter' problem, and it's highly technical. But it's a problem, for sure, and it affects many shows. One easily understood problem: converting to HD and converting that back to SD--but this is mostly a problem of incompetence. One solution for TV: MeTV (which isn't HD) should play Mama off the commercial DVDs, EXCEPT for the episodes where music was edited out, and possibly season 1, where the network versions may not be able to be played on TV.

Why can't they play the network versions?

The episodes on NBC ran several minutes longer than the made for syndication episodes that Lorimar produced after the show was cancelled by the network. That meant that the network episodes had to be edited so the run time was the same as the Lorimar shows. Warner (which absorbed Lorimar in the late 80's) owns the broadcast rights to MF but only for the edited network episodes as well as the Lorimar episodes. The Joe Hamilton estate owns the unedited NBC episodes (which is what appears on the Time LIfe DVDs), but legally can't broadcast their version because they are prohibited by Warner.

The DVDs look 100% better than the broadcasts on MeTV. Heck, the TBS bootleg DVDs look better than MeTV. The "film look" doesn't impress me at all.

Does anyone know the name and author of the book Naomi was reading about nuns when Vint was trying to become a Cobra? A screen cap would be even more awesome.

Four more weeks of back-to-back Mama, and at the 6 p.m. hour. Starting May 29, it will be just one episode nightly, at 9 p.m.

Better than nothin', right? It enjoye a year and a-half in that 6 p.m. Slot.
