Guys, don't get your hopes up too high. The announcement isn't quite what you are thinking. That's all I'll say.
And getting back to Universal, they own the rights to a couple of classic sitcoms - LEAVE IT TO BEAVER & THE MUNSTERS. But Universal is really pathetic about tv on dvd at present. For instance, they could have jumped into the boxed set game by releasing THE HULK in season sets this summer. Instead, they gave us a few overpriced episodes, and now come out with the "Ultimate Collection" which is only selected episodes in a boxed set. It's still far short of what they could and probably should do if they want to keep up with companies like Fox. B&W "Universal is up for sale, so don't look for them to leap into a strong tv on dvd deal right now" fan |

I'm looking forward to Adventures of Superman on DVD in season sets. That would be sweet. and Leave It To Beaver and The Munsters. coming to DVD would be cool. The Munsters, I think only lasted 2 to 3 seasons. Same goes for Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch. The release of those two shows seems like an impossibility right now. The Brady Bunch only lasted 5 seasons. |

Screenwriter,
What great picks for dvd releases! You have great taste. I'd be doing cartwheels if any of those shows you mentioned were released to dvd. The sad part is that none of these shows are even being considered (at least not seriously considered) for release right now. They all seem to be far off dreams at best. B&W "since Universal owns LITB & The Munsters, I'm not optimistic about our chances of seeing these on dvd in the near future" fan |

And for more "Universal Sucks" sentiment...
Universal owns the classic Horror movies. Universal has discontinued the DVDs of these movies (and the DVDs weren't that packed with extras to begin with). When Bride of Frankenstein can't be readily found on DVD, The company weho owns the movie should be flogged. Oh, and Sliders should also be on DVD. And Dragnet. However, there's the curse of Universal again. |

TV on DVD conference
8/29/2003 When there's a conference about TV on DVD, you know it's huge. Our friends over at Video Store Magazine are putting on the first TV on DVD conference this October. While it's only open to members of the industry and the press, this event is going to be exciting FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: JENNIFER HALPERIN 714.513.8434 jhalperin@advanstar.com HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS AND TV PRODUCERS GET TOGETHER FOR FIRST-EVER TV DVD CONFERENCE AUGUST 28, 2003 - The surging popularity of TV shows on DVD will be the focus of a one-day conference this fall in Hollywood. The first-ever TV DVD Conference, produced by Video Store Magazine in cooperation with the Digital Entertainment Group (formerly the DVD Entertainment Group), will be held Oct. 22 at the Wyndham Bel Age on Sunset Boulevard. Executive producer Thomas K. Arnold says he expects more than 300 DVD and television executives to attend the event, which will include three panel discussions and a product showcase luncheon with a special guest celebrity speaker, not yet announced. "Television has provided DVD with a whole new channel of programming," Arnold says. "We're seeing huge sales for everything from boxed sets of popular current series like 'The Sopranos,' 'Friends' and 'The Simpsons' to vintage favorites like 'The Outer Limits' and 'Married...With Children.' And then there's the whole other issue of children's TV programming migrating to disc, such as 'The Rugrats' and 'Spongebob Squarepants.'" "TV shows on DVD is truly a phenomenon," adds Video Store Magazine publisher Don Rosenberg. "Our market research shows TV programming on DVD last year accounted for 10 percent of total consumer spending on DVD, up from just 6 percent in 2001. And based on the heavy release schedules we're looking at, spending this year will cross the $1 billion market." Panel discussions will examine marketing strategies for current TV series, how to find, license and release vintage TV shows on DVD, and the booming market for short-form children's television. Also on the agenda is a special research presentation on the TV DVD market from Judith McCourt, Video Store Magazine's market research director. The event is open to the trade only. Advance registrations are $195 for Digital Entertainment Group members and $245 for nonmembers. Special press registrations are available to credentialed media by contacting Thomas K. Arnold at tkarnold@aol.com. For more information and to register, visit the Web site www.tvdvdconference.com. Charter studio sponsors include Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, HBO Home Video, Paramount Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Anchor Bay Entertainment. |

Only problem is, two rathger financially unstable companies who were responsible for a lot of great TV are missing from this press release...
AOL/Time-Warner and a Partridge in a Pear Tree, and Universal. However, pessimism aside, this is great news! Maybe this means we'll get Police Squad on DVD one of these days! |

If someone could get to this meeting (too far from me) I wish they'd ask Universal about the shows we've mentioned here, and I wish someone would mention to the representative of Paramount that THE FUGITIVE needs to be released! It would make them a bundle if marketed to people 30 and above (who have had a chance to see it in reruns). Unfortunately, since it hasn't been on the air for the last 10 years or so, I'm afraid the "younger generation" (those under 30) will have no knowledge of this incredible show and consequently not buy it.
B&W "every young person I've shown this series to has fallen in love with it, even though most of the episodes are in black and white" fan |

Oops, my bad. I guess Universal isn't gonna have a representative. Too bad. They need some good advice.
