I think BMW, Step By Step, Family Matters and Full House equally covered mature subject matters with the same kind of ease and sensitivity. Family Matters I recall having several episodes that were extremely boundary pushing for it's time, including an episode that covered racism and the use of the n word, an episode about gun violence (they stole Maxine's shoes!), dieting (Laura took diet pills) and racial profiling... I don't really recall BMW ever covering subject matters that seriously; they never did a "special drug episode"...

Although not airing on ABC or TGIF I'd say that NBC's "Blossom" however was the most "mature" teen comedy of it's era.
Ok, well, maybe it wasn't the most mature "ever." It wasn't clear, but I was comparing Boy Meets World to most of the '90s era sitcoms, mainly the Miller-Boyett shows.

Full House, Family Matters, and Step By Step had "issue" oriented episodes, sure. But over time, Boy Meets World became an issue oriented SERIES. The show was more realistic, more mature, and yes, not as corny as the others - IMHO. Full House, etc. would deal with their issue of the week story, learn a lesson, play sappy music, and it would basically be forgotten the following week.

Boy Meets World had serious issues and storylines that carried over for years. Teen sex was openly discussed on the show - I don't think DJ Tanner was open about sex with Danny. There was also a teenage marriage with powercouple Cory and Topanga. And yes, Boy Meets World did have an interracial relationship, featuring Shawn and Angela in seasons 5-7. I don't recall any other interracial couple on a TGIF show that lasted YEARS, and was the focus of many episodes.

Shawn Hunter is the TGIF character more prone to depression than any other, IMO. Just because he was one of the main stars, didn't mean he had to be perfect and listen to all those lessons of the week. He was quite rebelllious, and sometimes even a trouble maker. He lived in a trailer park, found out he was adopted, had that mother abandon him at the end of season two. His (not-so-great) father left him then too, causing Shawn to be tossed from home to home at a very young age. He also found out he had a half-sibling (Jack), he knew nothing about. And after all this, his father dies, causing Shawn to feel as if he cannot truly love anyone without them leaving. I don't think there's a single character on Full House, Family Matters, or Step By Step that has had that hard of a life. And really, that dealt with issues like to that extent.

Not every show is going to deal with the exact same things though. And the same things arn't going to happen in everyones life.DJ wasn't talking to Danny about having sex because she wasn't having it.Had the show kept going on.I'm sure it would of edventually happened.

Also in the same way your saying not everybody listens to all the lessons of the week. It's also possible that some do.And that they won't have to go through some of those things.

And i really have no idea what a interacial relationship has to do with anything.Of course that's not going to happen in every show.

Uncle Jesse started out as kind of a bad boy. That turned into a much better man.Like Shawn but older.Eddie Winslow was involved in questionable things from time to time.Same goes for Jt or even Stephanie Tanner.

Even Dinosaurs had a marijuana episode.

My simple point of this is.Boy meets world was no more mature or well written.Than any of my other favs. They all had things they did very well. And no matter what show you are talking about. They taught great life lessons. No show was more moral than Full house.

Racial issues on Family Matters was brought up, so I pointed out that Boy Meets World did as well. My point, or, well, my opinion, is Boy Meets World was less CHEESY than the rest.

I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I think BMW was just as cheesy as any other TGIF show. I mean any Eric story alone from seasons 3+ was the definition of Cheese.

I don't really like to use the word cheesy in genural.Unless i'm talking about mac n cheese. But i will Admit Family Matters at the end and sometimes but not usaly Boy meets world .Did some out of the realm of reality type of things. When did Full house ever do anything out of the realm of reality? Not that that's bad because there we're some great shows that we're based soley on not in reality Sabrina the teenage witch and Dinosaurs.

Jesse's dream that he was married to Kimmy; Michelle hitting her head and having a twin telling her what to do...
