The music industry would be a better thing if Mariah had just stayed making AC ballads/catchy uptempo pop numbers like she did in the early 90's. Mariah and J. Lo are both to blame for why top 40 radio is overrun by hip hop nowadays.

well, if Mariah had still done the hip hop mixes, but NOT released them as videos, and also left the rappers only to the maxisingles... it'd be different. Just like how countless artists do club remixes of songs, but if you dislike it, all you have to do is not go to a dance club or not buy the maxisingle. Mariah working with Puffy, Jay-Z and the sort opened the pandora's box for hip hop music strangleholding the singles chart. It's at the point where if you are not a hip hop fan, you cannot listen to any "non-oldies" radio station, and you certainly cannot watch any of the music channels unless you like country enough to watch CMT.

I know Mariah thinks that she did a great thing by bringing rappers into pop music, but all she's done in retrospect is actually make that the most overplayed to death genre of music since disco. I miss the days when people didn't need to hook up with rappers in order to score hit singles. I am disapointed that Usher has rappers in his new song, when his last cd was a huge hit, and none of the songs were dumbed down rap-infested singles.

LOL... you can't even compare Christina's Stripped to Mariah's best work, with two albums, Christina has already surpassed Mariah in talent... admit it or not. Even the snobby critics agree... LOL. Mariah could of never pulled off a song like "Beautiful" or even "Dirrty"!... Unlike MC, Christina has a more versatile voice.

Yes this is a Madonna thread, but we are not going to sit here as you post unfactual comments.

Oh, and I actually was thinking about SBTB Dork... but SBTB Geek has a ring to it. :\

wasn't Mariah's 170 million albums AND singles (I know someone counted the albums and singles together)? Madonna's at 165 albums alone, not counting singles. Either which way, it's not like one of them kicked the other. Mariah has more #1's than Madonna in the US and Japan, Madonna has more #1's than Mariah in the UK, France, Germany and Australia. It almost evens itself out.

But I read Celine Dion has outsold BOTH Mariah and Madonna. Plus, statistics really don't mean bull. Look at all the "Real artists" that haven't had as many #1's or sold as many albums as Jennifer Lopez.

170 million albums AND singles vs. 165 million albums alone (and Vogue sold 2 million copies in the US alone, it's pretty safe to assume she's sold over 5 million singles)?

I kinda have a hard time believing if Mariah really has outsold Madonna. Everyone I know has owned at least one Madonna album, many of them own at least 4 or 5. I only know a handful of people who have supported Mariah after the Butterfly album.

Mariah may have sold more albums in the past 15 years, but I don't think she has EVER been the icon that Madonna was at her height. Madonna was on a level of fame in 1989-1990 that only Michael Jackson, Elvis and The Beatles can possibly say they've seen. Every single thing Madonna did during that era was news.

Plus, it's doubtful Mariah will EVER reach Elvis or Beatles numbers if she keeps insisting on going on this rap trip that has alienated everyone who liked her in the early 1990's.

But if you wanna keep believing Mariah is God, good for you, but there are many more who will disagree because we think she's a hack who has ruined music by insisting on shoving rappers onto pop radio.

whatever, stay delusional

Madonna is the greatest pop icon of all time, Mariah ruined herself by shoving rap garbage down everyones throats. I already pointed out that Mariah sold 170 million albums + singles, and Madonna sold 165 million albums alone. Hello, you know as a fact Madonna's sold more than 5 million singles.

You are true sheep towards Mariah, even I admit Madonna has some albums and movies are not as good as others. I admit that Swept Away and The Next Best Thing were two of the worst movies I have ever watched.

Mariah was okay until she turned into ghetto trash in 1997 in the Honey remix video with Puff Daddy and Mase. Her and J. Lo are both equal on my "they suck, I'll never support them again for what they did to the music industry" list.

After Elvis, the Beatles, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Mick Jagger, Elton John, David Bowie, Michael Jackson (before he went wacko), Bob Dylan, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Howlin' Wolf, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and 10,000 others I could mention! Selling three million copies of each of your post-1984 albums on the strength of heavy MTV video rotation and radio programmers too lazy to look for another hack does NOT make you a pop icon!!

Oh wait, they just did find another hack - Britney! Now Madge can fianlly retire, knowing there's someone to carry the torch!

Keep telling yourself Mariah outsold Madonna.........Facts speak louder than words and the RIAA and IFIP all confirm Madonna outsold Ms.Carey.Must be hard being a MAriah fan anyway as J.Lo has taken her place in the music industry (hahaha).............Mariah may have more #1 singles than Madonna in the US but Madonna more than kicks Mariah's ares worldwide. Take the UK for example (which is the second biggest market for English speaking acts) MAriah only has 2 #1's here compared to Madonna's 10 (more than any other female act). Madonna also has way more top 10, top 5, top 3, and top 40 hits than Mariah in the US and worldwide. Mariah and her lambs are so delusional they'll believe any lie Mariah and her promotional team tell them. OK Let me do a sales break down (how fitting for Mariah hahah) for Mariah and Madonna.

Madonna:
Madonna (debut)- 11 Million worldwide
Like A Virgin- 21 million worlcwide
True Blue- 23 million worldwide
Who's That Girl- 5 million worldwide
You Can Dance- 5 million worldwide
Like A Prayer- 14 million worldwide
The Immaculate Collection- 26 million worldwide
Erotica- 9 million worldwide
Bedtime stories- 10 milion worldwide
Something To Remember- 10 million worldwide
Evita- 10 million worldwide
Ray Of Light - 15 million worldwide
Music- 13 million worldwide
American Life - 6 million worldwide

Madonna's total- 178 million ALBUMS sold worldwide

Mariah Carey:
Mariah Carey (debut)- 14 million worldwide
Emotions- 9 million worldwide
MTV Unplugged- 7 million worldwide
Music Box- 27 million worldwide
Daydream-23 million worldwide
Merry Christmas- 8 million worldwide
Butterfly- 11 million worldwide
Rainbow- 8 million worldwide
Glitter- 3 million worldwide
Charmedbracelet - 5 million worldwide

Mariah's totals with ALBUMS 115 million sold worldwide

*Note* When both artists include singles sales the overall record sales will obviously be higher.

Madonna's obviously released more singles than Mariah.............................
