Chinatown was great! Dietrich and his clarinet, goodness that was funny. And when Harris walked in while Dietrich was in bed and Dietrich told him that he was naked and Harris just looked disgusted and walked out--I laughed so hard at that.
Scanlon was great, too. I couldn't quite bring myself to feel bad for him, but I was close. I think that widow played Vicky in the original The Parent Trap. |

It was a departure seeing Dietrich pigging out....not caring about the notes on the clarinet, etc. He just didn't care about anything. He's usually so reserved. It was funny when Barney knocked, and he said, "Barney who?"..."Oh, that Barney" Seeing Harris disheveled was funny too. His hair a mess, but he still had on a nice satin robe. It was funny when he said to Barney, "We could have done that!" after Barney told the Chinese man he could go home. Great decision on Barney's part to let the man go knowing what his fate would most likely be. Took guts and compassion. Scanlon's scene in Barney's office was great. The man was having a mental meltdown. I think Barney felt pity for him. It was his compassion and pity which led him to be kind to Scanlon at the end. Too funny when Scanlon came back with, "I despise you!" |

Another powerhouse performance by Dietrich. He's so good at keeping his cool.
During the Dick Van Dyke credits, they have a little show preview where they state a bit of trivia. Apparently this one was one of Hal Linden's favorite episodes to direct, specifically because of Harris' reactions to seeing Dietrich in love! Funny stuff. maclen |

I loved seeing the expressions on the guys' faces during the kiss and afterwards. Wojo seemed to blush. It was nice to finally hear Dietrich explain why he didn't become a doctor, lawyer, husband, etc. If he can't be the best at something, he didn't want to pursue it. I think TV Land, in their infinite wisdom, chopped a portion out because at the end, she said to Dietrich, "Can I give Eddie your best?", he responded, "He already got it." It was easy enough to figure it out, but I had a feeling that we missed out on some previous dialogue. I could be wrong, but it struck me that way. All in all, a standout episode. |
