hee hee, I think all the characters are truly funny when they interact with others. That's why Potsie wasn't so hilarious in the last few seasons. His best buds and partners in crime were in Greenland!!!

Another Roger scene that I found funny....

Joanie and Roger are in Roger's office, fighting over the phone. Roger is trying to make a phone call, but Joanie snatches the phone away from him and won't give it back.

Roger-- Joanie, give me the phone
Joanie-- No!
Roger-- Joanie, this is not me talking to you as your cousin. This is me talking to you as your boss! Now, give me the phone.
Joanie-- No!
*Fonzie walks in and finds them fighting like children over the phone*
Fonzie-- Cool it!
Roger-- Fonz, she won't give me the phone!
Fonzie-- (to Roger) Now, I know why you want the phone, but (to Joanie) why do you want it?

Oh, I SOO agree with your statement about Potsie not being as funny because Richie and Ralph were gone. I truly feel that Potsie wandering around in Happy Days without Richie and Ralph was like Linus wandering around without his blanket. There was just such an emptiness there.

What I notice about Roger is that he was set up to be what Plato described as the "straw man". Roger was the boring, dull person who was just supposed to be irritating. This was supposed to add comic relief to the show because characters like Fonzie could take his dim persona and knock it down for a laugh. Plato did this in his essays all the time, but rather than getting a laugh he tried to teach a lesson/make a point.

I totally agree with the Potsie/Linus analogy. Half of me wanted Potsie to go to Greenland with them so that he could he happy, but the other half didn't want to lose the last of the three nerds. And when Richie came back, it was obvious how much things had changed. Potsie and Richie didn't mesh together like how they used to. Richie seemed so much more serious and didn't seem to care about Potsie. I feel so bad for Potsie, he was so used in the last few seasons. I don't think Richie and Ralph should have left. Yes, the focus would not be on Joanie and Chachi, but there were so many more situations for the cast to go through together! So many more things Fonzie had to tell them and so many funny jokes that were unused. Sigh, I miss the good ol' days.

As for Roger, I think they made a mistake in thinking he could replace Richie. Not that I don't like him. I think that they should have gotten Roger on the show, he's funny with Fonzie. But they shouldn't have thought he could replace Richie. So many people fell in love with Richie. So many considered his friendship with the Fonz an inspiration. Roger could never have replaced that, no matter how good their interaction was, Fonzie's best friend will always be and always is Richie.

You know, I felt so bad for Potsie in this episode. When the show first aired, Richie and Potsie were best buds. In "Welcome Home" Potsie didn't even know Richie had returned until he bumped into him at Arnold's, but the rest of the gang was planning a party. There seemed to be such a gap between them. I wonder how Potsie really felt toward Fonzie for stealing his best friend. Though you're right, I feel the most powerful part of the show was that special and unique friendship between Fonzie and Richie.

Richie was a jerk when he came back home. Did anyone else notice the scene where Richie and Fonzie are playing pool and Fonzie says that he considers himself lucky because he had one truly good friend in his life....then he asks Richie is he feels the same way and it's like Richie totally gives him the cold shoulder. I know Richie was supposed to be upset because he felt like he was being prevented from going to Hollywood, but it seemed like Richie was just snubbing Fonzie. Richie really didn't seem to fit in with any of the gang any longer, except for Ralph. Ralph, on the other hand, returned home being his usually wonderful, charming self. I loved it when he kissed Joanie as soon as he commented on how she had grown up. *LOL*

Was Roger actually supposed to be a "replacement" for Richie or just an adition to the cast to add some more flavor to the show?

I think the probelm with Richie was that they "aged" his character too much, just to keep him in the story while he was away. Getting married, the baby. When they brought Richie & Ralph back they had make the Richie the result of what they had been writing in his physical absence. Notice, that since Ralph was rarely mentioned he went through less changes. He just basically accepted the fact he had to grow up now, but did it with a smile.
As far as Potsie, basically he's just not a solo act. That's why I think he was still good in the later eps where he was paired w/Roger & Chachi.
Yes, it's sad that Potsie was dropped on Richie's totem pole, so to speak, but not surprising. Not only was there the Fonzie-Richie relationship, Richie then spent four years in the Army w/Ralph. He even alluded to that in the welcome home episode. Maybe from a "real" world point of view Richie chose Fonzie as his best friend over Potsie b/c all Potsie seemed to do was get him in trouble and ask for favors.

I know if my friends joined the army (duck! the missiles are probably heading in the wrong direction) and I haven't see them in years and they came back, but didn't bother to drop in to say hi, I'd be a little bit more than peeved. But Potsie is above that. I think that while Fonzie and Richie did share a close bond, Potsie will always be Richie's more societally acceptable friend. We never know what Richie did when Fonzie was away or with his girlfriends. Maybe Richie did spend a lot of time with Potsie, but we just never saw it. And maybe Richie did say hi to Potsie when he came back. Y'know, no matter how much we try to analyze these episodes and try to figure out what was in these character's heads, we can never know for sure.

PS: I thought Richie was horrible in the Welcome Back eps. I mean, when he screamed at his mother and trashed his room. I know my Richie would never do that!

Exactly! Who knows what happens before, after or inbetween that 30 minutes! Not that I would want to..Because the there would be no guessing or wondering or what ifs, And that would take a huge chunk of fun out of it, Because we would know everything about every character.

Yup! We've got to assume their lives were longer than the 30 mins per episode!

I think Richie was a lot more interesting of a character, Roger seemed kinda boring. No offense to any Roger fans.

Thanks!

Richie's Girl

Roger is nothing like Richie and the ratings after the 1979-1980 is proof of that.
