Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Bernie Mac, Tim Taylor(on certain occasions), Hayden( from Coach) Hal (Malcom in the Middle) Grampa Simpson, many shows have that, the idea is to be funny and if u take it that serously, don't watch the show. OH ALMOST 4GOT, George from Seinfeld was like that to his parents.

I'm gonna have to agree with Solomon's original post on this one. I felt the same way because ABC has never exactly had a family show with the father portrayed this way. Some of you did give a couple good examples that are exceptions, but as a whole I feel ABC has never quite had something like this where the dad is CONSTANTLY looked at like the family idiot.
And yes they do have "touching family moments" where the kids respect Paul, but "the dad is a goof that the kids blow off" stands out more than "the touching family moments" on this show. ABC has long been known for having their family shows feature those two themes oppositely than on 8 Simple Rules. And let me just finish this by saying, THAT'S A GOOD THING FOR THIS SHOW and ABC. |

Even last night's episode, he was treated like a moron by his wife and kids. No respect at all, especially by the oldest daughter. |

I know! I think actually I want to take back what I said with that being a good thing for ABC. I just wanted the last thing I said to be positive since sometimes people will get all pissy when you make a critique. I mean, it's good for the fact that ABC needed a different type sitcom because all the family shows before it were so cookie-cut. This one stands out compared to the ones before because of the blatant disrespect by the kids. If that's good or bad, it's up to you all. Personally, I didn't like the family shows on ABC before. I can sit through this, although lately I've usually watched American Idol.

The show reminds me of married with childdren and that's because i found out the writers for the show also wrote for married with children. Atleast in MWC, Al was viewed as the famly idiot but he still had his insults for Peg. Paul in 8 simple, just takes it all from the wife and kids and never has no come back. Actually I think the Pual character is passive like Jack Tripper. |

I think it's kinda funny that paul's treated like that! it makes the show really realistic and authentic because nowadays, families are often like that. bridget and kerry and rory still love their dad, they just fight with him sometimes (well not so much rory). most families are like this, they're not perfect. if they were, i'd be scared!!!

haha, yea i've called my dad a dork(or along those lines) before. i don't say it really rudely...it's just more of a joking type thing. like the kids on the show rn't being completely serious about it, and it's funny n e ways!
