I think it was 1978. If I'm wrong someone will correct me I'm sure. I remember seeing it origionally in themovie theatre & getting trhe soundtrack album & getting the 45 of YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT by Travolta & Olivia Newton-John...

yes, it was in 78. In 77 he made "Saturday night fever" & it became a big hit, but he still did WBK for a few episodes. Then, he left it and made GREASE. After that became a big hit, he made a film called "Moment to Moment" w/Lily Tomlin. When that bombed, he made another film with Olivia Newton-John, and that bombed, and it wasn't until the 90s that his film career took off again.

From the sounds of it-He should have stayed away all together and just focused on film-making instead of popping in the WBK show and then popping out again-and then in again.

Grease came out summer of 78. Saturday Night Fever was out about a year before that.

There were a lot of scenes with just Kaplan at home because he was a comedian. Kind of like Seinfeld.

"WBK" was also loosely based on what really happened to Gabe Kapan in high school. He really went to a high school like that, and after graduation became a comedian.

None of Kaplan's jokes on the show were funny.

I agree that Kaplan was not that funny on the show. I don't understand why he told so many corny, humorless jokes. Personally I never heard any of his standup, so I don't know how funny he really was. But he did gain stardom as a comedian.

I don't think he was the appeal of the show. It was John Travolta. He was hilarious as Barbarino.

Although she wasn't my favorite character, I'll admit, Judy could be pretty funny. Actually, her name was B-O-R-D-E-N

I loved Judy too. She still looks great even now.

I read somewhere that Helaine is an acting teacher with brother Michael in L.A. now. Their father Harvey founded the Harvey Lembeck Comedy Workshop and that's where they work.

here's the link.

Even though I love WBK, I think Gabe was a awful comedian.
