Definitely Darrin #1, no question about it!! Dick York's characterization was definitely more appropriate in his nervousness...Dick Sargent acted too bored about his family situation, with a deadpan, utterly bored tone of voice he would say, "Okay Endora, what are you going to do to me now?" Definitely much grumpier than the first Darrin!

Anyone ever see the Screen Gems Network showing of
Bewitched? If you haven't they had a bit of trivia with each episode. One piece of trivia that they did was the fact that Dick Sargent was the ORIGINAL choice by the producers for Darren, but because of a committment he couldn't get out of they hired Dick York to take the role;later when Dick York left the series they went back and finally were able to get Dick Sargent to take the role. So even though Dick York was the first Darren it was Dick Sargent who was the ORIGINAL choice for the role! ![]() And that said my choice is Dick York,he had better comic timing. |

Hey, what's the Screen Gems network and where is it available? Some of my fave shows were produced by Screen Gems, including "The Donna Reed Show"...

Dick York...!
He was exactly what the producer was looking for... a guy who could really freak out whenever witchcraft hit the fan... a great character actor...! Dick Sargent always acted like he had on too- tight shoes or something... he just couldn't show emotion the way Dick York did... by the way: is it me or didn't their marriage seem a little unbelievable...? As much as Samantha's husband was always cursing her out... it's hard to believe he loved her... P.S. Why's everybody always yammerin' about how hot Barbara Eden was in "I Dream of Jeannie"? She had an okay face... but her body was kinda plump and lacked muscle tone... d'ja ever notice how Elizabeth Montgomery could show off her legs any time and any where...? Yeah... that's what I'm talkin' about...!

I thought they both did a pretty good job, but I was a little partial to Dick York, for no particular reason. I guess everyone develops their own level of comfort with a particular character.

To me once the Dick York left it seemed to coincide with the show just generally going down hill.
Dick York had the same quality as Dick Van Dyke and just looking at his face for a reaction was funny enough on its own. Even yesterday in the episode "A Change of Face" where Darin is looking in the mirror at the office at his nose is priceless. I really believe that Dick York could carry an episode by himself. The Dick Sargent episodes also do not have that magic that the first two seasons had which is not his fault either. The first two years in black and white were classics and while there where many good episodes after that , the story line was getting old. The first two years the episodes where almost believable but then started getting a bit wacky after that. Dick York "SAMANTHA" !! Dick Sargent "saaaaaaaaaaaaaam" |

Agreed. I also liked the first Gladys Kravitz better (played by Alice Pearce). I was actually introduced to the color eps before the b&w eps when I was younger, and yet I'm still convinced that the b&w eps are waaay better! I feel that this proves that my opinion is unbiased, since people usually have the tendency to prefer what they were introduced to first. |
