I also liked to spot all of the mistakes that were made, as the show was filmed live as it aired! Lots of booms falling into view and stage hands coughing loudly in the background!
Hmm actually it wasn't taped live as it aired. The shows were taped usually two weeks in advance, but were rarely edited and unless a crew or cast member was seriously hurt (Broken bones etc) they would not stop unless the entire cast was laughing cause of a blooper. I think the show got it's first editing machine in 1967. In an interview Dan Curtis did, he said that he'd have to get another guy in the editing room and whenever they wanted to cut out a frame they'd have to push two buttons at the exact same time..if you didn't do it exactly at one time, it would edit out a frame. The budget for one episode was around $14000 I bleieve.

I don't watch soap operas but my mother watches One Life to Live, so I voted for that for her.

On the list I would have to say The Young & the Restless, but Generations was my favorite of all time, although it was a short lived Soap Opera.

It was not called City Limits, it was called The City, it had Morgan Fairchild in it. It was originally called Loving and they tried to retool it to improve ratings and avoid cancellation. Didn't work.

well, favorite soap of all-time is Guiding Light and why wasn't it mentioned on the poll? I have watched the show on and off since 1983 and I have seen most of the other soaps and none of them can beat GL. Not only does GL honor it's history but it also has family values. All soaps have their core families but I've only seen GL actually make it a point to stress family over the latest hot body. This isn't to say that the families aren't sexy because that would be a lie...but it's just that GL doesn't go overboard with appearance. My favorite characters on GL are Ed Bauer, Alan Spaulding, and Ross Marler. Roger Thorpe would also be on that list but he's no longer on the show anymore and the definitive player, Michael Zazlow, has since passed away.

Ideally a Days Of Our Lives/Sunset Beach amalgam. All the weirdness of both! Ben, Derek and Annie, possibly Greg, from SB, transplanted into DOOL. Forget the boring storylines, and just have general Stefano-style insanity!

You're half right. Loving had been canceled, and ABC wanted another soap. Instead of getting a new soap out-right, they took Loving and killed off half the characters, leaving only the younger and hippest characters. They were then transported from the fictional town of Cornith, Penn to the non-fictional town of So-Ho, New York. Tess (Catharine Hickland, now Lindsay, OLTL) became owner of a modeling agecny, Alley (Laura Wright, now Cassie, GL) started dating Private Investegator Tony, and tried to help solve crimes. The entire cast also moved into a hip looking apartment building (now the set of "The View"). The camera angles were changed from normal, tradional camera angles to funky and stylish ones (sideways, upsidedown, etc)...

Morgan Fairchild joined that cast as Sydne Chase, the owner of the building. Half-way through the shows run she left the series and Jane Elliot (Tracey, GH) joined the cast as Tracey. The story was that Tracey bought the building from old friend, Sydne.

The addition of Tracey to the cast facilitated to additon of Mob Boss Gino Soletio who she tricked into marriage, to inherit his fourtue. She faked the measels so she wouldn't have to consemate that marriage. He was shot and killed which left Tracey all his money. This enraged his daughter, i beleive her name was Gina?

Anyway The City just didn't work, the ratings never amounted to anything (i believe it was last place every single week it was on the air) and it never won a major Emmy or soap opera award. After a year and a half (give or take a few months) on the air, The City was canceled in 1997.

But it wasn't for nothing as The city did feature some ground-breaking storylines, including Daytime TV's first Transexual storyline. The story was that Model Azure who worked at Tess's agency had once been a man and had a sex-change operation. It was a ground breaking storyline and a daytime first. It pre-dated the coming out of AMC's Bianca by at least six years.

It's good show, but it needs action.
