I'm gonna add my opinion here but I just wanna point out that I haven't actually seen the Oscar ceremony yet (due to the fact that I live in Britain and we have to wait aaaaaaaaaaaages before we get to see anything decent).
1. I didn't actually get to see many of the movies that were nominated (again due to the fact that I live in Britain and most of the movies haven't even been released here yet!) but I'm really, really glad that LOTR didn't win best picture cos it has to be one of the most overrated movies of all time!!!!
2. You people can congratulate Halle Berry and Denzel Washington all you want but, to me, it all seems like a bit of a fix. I mean, black people don't win these prestigeous awards for years and then, all-of-a-sudden, 2 black people win best actor and best actress in the same year!!!!!!!! I haven't seen 'Training Day' or 'Monsters Ball' but I think the Academy were just trying to be P.C. by letting 2 black actors win. Halle Berry is pretty hot though, so I shan't complain

3. Although I haven't yet seen 'In the Bedroom', I think Marisa Tomei should've won best supporting actress cos I have been a fan of hers for years.
4. David Lynch should've won Best Director cos that guy is a genius!

Ok, I am not understanding this at all.

First of all, they don't give an award to Best Producer. The producers accept the award for Best Picture.

How can they give an award to main character? A character is just that, a character. It's created by the screenwriter, and if the screenwriter has done a good job he wins an Oscar. If the actor has done a good job in portraying the character, he wins the Oscar. I am not understandying your point.

I watched it and I was happy that Ron Howard won for Best Director and also his movie for Best Picture.

I can see how it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is certainly not overrated. They took a book that everyone felt could not be made into a movie, or only a disatrous movie, and they did a good job with it. Whether you're into the fantasy genre or not, I think LOTR deserves props anyway. In a way I didn't want it to win Best Picture either, but I would have been pleased if LOTR or Moulin Rouge had won because they are very different from what the Academy usually picks...movies just like A Beautiful Mind.

Your forgetting it's the same year they honored Sidney Poitier for his acheivements as a black actor. I must admit that a similar thought crossed my mind...I do feel both Halle and Denzel are deserving, but in a small way it makes you think the Academy voted how they did just to be PC or something. But if the Academy being PC is what it takes to "kick down doors" then that's not necessarily a bad thing.

If they give the award to a particular movie Say..........

Gone with the wind - It wins say 10 awards. But, yet Vivien Leigh who played Scarlett didn't get an Oscar wouldn't that get you mad? (Remember this is just an example).........

I only saw like 10 minutes of it the rest of the time I was watchin DW tapes, writing my story, and... well, sleeping.

Ok, I think I understand what you're saying (BTW, Vivien Leigh DID win an Oscar for that, Clark Gable didn't) but you have to remember that no movie is perfect. What they do when they pick a Best Picture is the best one made that year. Even it is allowed to have problems with it - and you also have to remember that these awards are only given out once a year and they want to recognize as many films as possible. Only twice has a movie taken 3 acting awards: NETWORK and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, and neither of them won best picture. So I see your point, but they can't just give every award to one movie.

Sorry to resurrect this old subject, but I have a question for Liza, since she seems to be so knowledgable about the Oscars....

I've always wondered, when something is up for Best Adapted Screenplay, do the voting members of the Academy actually read the original book that was adapted? Because I'm thinking otherwise, how could they know for sure which adaptation was best?

Thanks for asking! What I know about screenplay is that it, like all of the other technical awards is only voted on by people in that field (only screenwriters can vote on screenplay, only editors vote on editing) so since they are all writers, I would assume that they read the books. I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure that they do.
